Strictly helps rid Blue boy Webbe of demons

B

oy-band star Simon Webbe has revealed how appearing on reality shows has helped him find self-peace after a severe battle with depression. The star of the band Blue talked of how his appearance and runner-up on BBC’s hot show, ‘Strictly Come Dancing,’ helped him turn his life

around and face the demons that have been dogging him for years. 36-year-old Webbe said he believes that taking part in the show helped him beat depression after he recently opened up about his mental health issues. The chart-topping singer who, with his band, enjoyed a string of hits throughout the last decade appeared on several ‘reality’ shows, including; ‘I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here,’ and the ‘Reunion,’ with band-members Birmingham-born Simon said: “My experience on ‘Strictly’ was the catalyst for me to release all the tensions and angst that was in me. I used to think ballroom was just for posh people, but my experience helped me to learn about a different set of values and discipline, which I didn’t know was so important to the genre. What people do in the pop industry is nothing compared to this kind of dancing. I have maximum respect for anyone doing it. And, I’m missing the show immensely.” He will be on the road, as part of the Strictly Come Dancing UK Tour later in the year.

S

inger Shakira has given birth to her second son with footballer boyfriend Gerard Pique. The pop star welcomed her second son into the world at a hospital in Barcelona, where she underwent a scheduled caesarean section, reports said. The news was confirmed in a statement from

the couple with another revealled the baby’s name. The “Waka waka” hitmaker and her beau reserved an entire floor of the Hospital Quiron Teknon in the Spanish city for the birth. The baby was delivered by the same doctor and at the same location as their first son, two-yearold Milan.

Bieber sorry for his behaviour

J

ustin Bieber has apologised for the way he has behaved over the last 18 months. The singer, 20, said sorry in a video he released online shortly after appearing on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. “How I’ve been acting in the last year, year and a half, is not who I am. I was pretending,” he said. “Often we pretend to be something we are not to cover up for what we are truly feeling inside.” The reason for releasing

the video isn’t clear but it seems Justin Bieber may have been unhappy with his interview with chat show host Ellen. During the minute-long apology recorded at home he explains that the live studio audience meant he felt uncomfortable. “I was afraid of what people are thinking of me right now,” he said. “It’s been a minute since I have made a public appearance. “I didn’t want to come off arrogant or conceited.”

Bob Marley J

amaica and the UK are set to rock to reggae rhythms this February as a series of events are planned across the Caribbean island and Great Britain to celebrate what would have been Bob Marley's 70th birthday. The late, iconic reggae star Bob Marley is set to be remembered in his homeland of Jamaica with a landmark concert to mark what would have been his 70th Birthday. The artist who is famous for worldwide hits such as 'No Woman No Cry' and 'One Love' will be honoured by the people of Jamaica and fans from across the world with a musical tribute to the man that dedicated his life to music. Activities to mark the 70th anniversary

of Bob Marley's birthday will take place on February 6 at the Bob Marley Museum on Hope Road and Tuff Gong Studio on Marcus Garvey Drive. The day's activities will include symposiums on Reggae Music and Reggae Jam sessions with Chronixx, Kabaka Pyramid and Nomaddz. Stars from the world of music will come together on 7 February 2015 at Kingston's Waterfront to continue the celebration in honour of the music legend's contribution to reggae. Three of Bob Marley's sons - Stephen, Damian and Kymani, will headline the free concert with other music legends including the likes of Tarrus Riley, Marcia Griffith and Lauryn Hill set to perform to the crowds.

Thousands of fans are expected to pay homage and head to Bob's homeland to mark the anniversary. The concert will feature as part of an annual month-long celebration dubbed Reggae Month It's Kingston for February that will see Jamaica celebrate its roots as the home of reggae with a busy calendar of activities kicking off on 1 February 2015. Meanwhile here in the UK, Marley's base for many years in the 1970's, the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) is launching a social media campaign asking the UK to share details of how they plan to celebrate the star's birthday on 6 February 2015. The JTB is seeking news and images from those lucky enough to be setting off to Mar-

ley's homeland to commemorate the date, those who will be donning rasta wigs in his honour, videos of future reggae stars singing one of Bob's hits or even those who will have his albums Legend and Exodus on repeat all day long. Reggae Month Its Kingston for February aims to use reggae music and its cultural significance to attract visitors to Jamaica's capital, Kingston. Events include everything from familyfriendly festivals and music performances, to food and cultural events, as well as international reggae conferences and lectures. The month of celebrations will close with an exclusive awards ceremony by The Jamaica Reggae Industry Association on 28 February

2015. Reggae veterans John Holt and Hopeton Lewis will be recognised posthumously for their contribution to reggae music. Those lucky enough to be in Jamaica for the landmark date and are looking to party in to the early hours, can head to Negril on the island's west coast for the Bob Marley Birthday Bash, a week-long celebration in honour of the Three Little Birds singer. The Birthday Bash is now in its 23rd year and between 1 February and 6 February 2015 will invite visitors to enjoy a reggae party, live bands and tribute acts, all whilst enjoying the traditional flavours of Jamaica. For more information, visit the Bob Marley Birthday Bash Facebook page.

When it comes to family-friendly entertainment, Nesta's Rock is a musical that focuses on the life of the young Marley and will run until 22 February 2015. Audiences at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts in Kingston will be entertained by the young star's story who's dreams are met with some ridicule from his friends and he soon finds himself on a magical journey, transported to the whimsical farming village of Nine Mile. For tickets, visit Jamaican Musical Theatre.

Our Pick of movies to see over the Christmas period

BIG HERO 6 I n the futuristic city of San Fransokyo, rebellious 14-year-old tech genius Hiro Hamada (Ryan Potter) spends his days participating in illegal, back alley robot fights. Worried that he is squandering his

potential, Hiro’s older brother Tadashi (Daniel Henney) takes him to the robotics laboratory at his university and introduces Hiro to his friends GoGo (Jamie Chung), Wasabi (Damon Wayans Jr.), Honey Lemon (Genesis Rodriguez) and Fred (T.J.

Miller). Hiro also meets Tadashi’s own creation, a personal healthcare robot named Baymax (Scott Adsit), whose sole purpose is to take care of people. This one night ignites Hiro’s passion and convinces him to change his life for the better, but when a devastating turn of events throws Hiro into the middle of a dangerous scheme, he is forced to transform Baymax and his other friends into a band of high-tech superheroes in an attempt to save the world. If you are reading this and you’re thinking to yourself “Big Hero 6? I haven’t even seen the first five!” then fear not, for this is not the sixth instalment in an ongoing franchise, it is a Disney movie that is loosely based on the Marvel comic of the same name. The world of animation and the world of superheroes collide in Disney’s latest picture and the result is a fantastic one. Taking the emotional story-telling we are accustom to from Disney and the frantic, kinetic energy that is synonymous with Marvel, we have been gifted with this hugely satisfying amalgamation that, despite its January release date, is sure to remain one of the best animated films of 2015. There’s a lot to be admired about Big Hero 6; from the colourful, relatable characters to the bright, vibrant and exquisite animation, this film is visually flawless and is a genuine pleasure to watch. Then, there’s the humour, which you are bombarded with much of the 102 minute runtime and while some jokes may fall just short of landing, the vast majority of it works and will leave you with a huge smile on your face. Much of the humour comes from the way characters interact with one another, especially Hiro and Baymax, who I truly believe will become the Olaf of 2015 – a painfully innocent and kind-hearted character who children and adults alike will love tremendously. It’s hard to believe how much you can connect with a character that is essentially an emotionless robot. Just wait until

REVIEW you watch the movie; you’ll see! However, with this being a Disney movie, you know that while you are guaranteed to laugh, your heartstrings are never far from being tugged at, and Big Hero 6 follows suit. It seems that one of Disney’s favourite themes is grief and as horrible as this may sound, you know that when you sit down to watch a Disney movie, there’s a strong chance that you are going to experience the emotional death of one or more of the characters. While that may sound morbid, Disney has mastered the art of focusing on the aftermath of death, where all of the characters help one another to come to terms with it and move on. It’s more about overcoming difficult situations and having hope in the direst of times and, when you think about it, that’s a pretty beautiful lesson for them to teach our children. Big Hero 6 is no different, and features some extremely emotional moments, but they are niftily counterbalanced with humour so things never get too serious. Now, in terms of the negative aspects of this film, there are only a few minor gripes I can point out, but most of which can be forgiven considering that the target audience for this film are children. These issues are with certain storytelling devices used throughout the film. For example, in order to provide us with a little back-story on the lead characters, some of the dialogue feels a little stiff due to the fact that it is full of exposition. “What would mom and dad say?” Asks Tadashi; only for Hiro to point out that “They’re gone! They died when I was three, remember?” It is dialogue like this that unintentionally drew laughter from the audience and put a slight blemish on what was meant to be an emotional scene between two brothers. Fortunately, as previously stated, these issues can be forgiven as they are few

wORDS by antony brown

and far between and it is a film aimed at children, so it is understandable that they would try and rush certain dialogue scenes in order to prevent their audience from getting bored. Big Hero 6 is almost pitch-perfect. With enough animated hi-jinks to keep children happy, enough exhilarating action to keep teenagers interested and enough heart

to keep adults involved, Big Hero 6 is truly a film with something for everyone. It takes everything we adore about Disney and everything we love about Marvel and throws it all together into one enormously entertaining experience. I for one cannot wait for Big Hero 6 2, or whatever the hell they’re going to call the sequel.
