It’s Black History Month, as you’ve no doubt realised by now, and celebrating this is very important to everyone here at Street Cred. If you don’t know where you’ve come from, you’re destined to make the same mistakes, so this month read up, listen, and LEARN from it! We’ve given our main man Ed Sheeran the front this week, he’s rocking the charts with everything from the first single, the smash hit Sing with Pharrell. Working from the bottom and finally reaching the top, he has really shown everyone the true way to get to the top of the charts, there are other routes besides going on reality TV shows to get yourself out there. Still nothing this month however has topped the one major thing that has happened in my life the birth of my little girl.
Both mother and baby are doing great, and we’re so grateful for all the support and thoughts we’re getting. Thank you. Check out the rest of the mag! What are you waiting for?! MDG

GRIMEY NEWS Nicole revealed as first confirmed act at Free Radio Live 2014
F
ormer Pussycat Dolls singer and X Factor judge Nicole Scherzinger has been unveiled as the first confirmed act at this year’s Free Radio Live, which is taking place at the LG Arena on November 29. It will be one of the 36-year-old’s last gigs performing her solo material before she embarks on a three-month stint as Grizabella in a revival of Cats in London’s West End in December. This is the fifth year of the annual pop concert and previous acts have included Olly Murs, The Saturdays, McFly, JLS and Little Mix. Nicole is expected to perform this summer’s top ten hit Your Love and her latest single On The Rocks from her new album Big Fat Lie as well as previous hits including former Number 1. Don’t Hold Your Breath. A tribute will also be paid to Staffordshire teenager Stephen Sutton at the event, and a substantial donation from ticket sales will be made to Teenage Cancer Trust.
Legend Nile and Rudimental to re-release Chic classic
G
rammy Award winning music legend Nile Rodgers and chart-topping Rudimental have made their charity remix of disco hit Le Freak, nearly 40 years after it first went to number one on the US and UK charts. The track was co-produced by young people from across the UK and shown for the first time at a special one-off sold out Nile Rodgers and CHIC concert on October 9 - a show put on by Go-
ThinkBig work experience. Last month, GoThinkBig - a work experience initiative launched by O2 and Bauer Media - offered young people across the country a chance to join Nile and Rudimental’s ‘super group’. Successful entrants were picked by a panel of judges, offering applicants a unique opportunity to kick-start their career by landing a once in a lifetime work placement. A huge range of positions were made available from production
to sound technicians through to studio managers, camera crew, stylists and box office. Launched in 2012 by O2 and Bauer Media, GoThinkBig.co.uk is a website dedicated to helping young people gain valuable skills through work experience and careers advice. More than 250,000 young people use the site to browse work placements and by the end of 2015, the programme will have offered 30,000 experience and skills op-

The campaign follows in the footsteps of GoThinkBig’s partnership with Rizzle Kicks last year, where 75 young people in the UK were recruited to work on the set of the music video for their hit track Lost Generation. It was a huge success, with three of the young people gaining full time jobs from their roles.

Better Together at Birmingham International Tattoo
T
he Scottish soldier is inextricably linked with the imagery of pipes and drums and the team coordinating the 26th annual Birmingham International Tattoo had coincidentally chosen a Scottish theme to this year’s event and invited the Royal Regiment of Scotland to lead over 1,000 performers in a threehour spectacle of pomp and pageantry. Speaking after the Scottish vote, Tattoo Producer Norman Rogerson said; “We are all very pleased that the Scots chose to remain as part of the UK as the Royal Regiment of Scotland Band are fantastic ambassadors for Great Britain as well as Scotland and will perform alongside bands from Poland, Belarus and Austria
at this year’s Birmingham Tattoo.” Norman knows what he is talking about as he was previously Bandmaster of another famous Scottish band, as he led the Band of the Black Watch for many years. Norman added: “This year’s fantastic line-up is one of the very best in our 26 year history and will be a fitting tribute to all those who fought in both World Wars and those who have served in the armed forces over the last 100 years – those from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales plus our allies.” This year’s special event also brings together marching bands from Poland, Belarus, Austria and nearer to home our own British forces. Representing Poland for the first time at the Tattoo will be the

Ceremonial Band of the Polish Army, joining them will be the Central Band of the Belarus Armed Forces with dancers and vocal soloists from The Bolshoi and, from Austria, the Lacken Band. Nearer to home the Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland and the Royal Naval Volunteer Band will demonstrate their musical and marching skills. They will be joined by the Centenary Massed Pipes and Drums of over 100 pipersand the National Youth Marching Band which combines seven of the UK’s finest youth musical groups. Complementing the music of the massed bands will be the thrills of the exciting displays including the RMRNC Inter-Service Field Gun Competition, featuring the Royal Navy, Army and RAF, which will
prove how both sheer strength and agility are needed to control the heavy guns as they race each other. With over 100 Massed Standard Bearers plus for the first time the Royal British Legion Riders Motorcycle Display there is something for all the family at the three hour event. The Tattoo would not be complete without the ever-popular Spectacular Grand Finale featuring all the performers who will be joined by the Royal Air Force Cosford Queen’s Colour and Escort, to perform the traditional Land of Hope and Glory and closing ceremony. Everyone will join forces for this year’s Birmingham International Tattoo on Saturday November 29 and Sunday 30 at The NIA.

E
d Sheeran has blasted into the forefront of mainstream music in the last few years. With the success of his first album, ‘+’, launching him to superstardom, and the new album ‘x’, in which he has collaborated with some heavyweights of music including Pharrell, Rudimental, Rick Rubin and a number of others, Ed is in the perfect position to take the world by storm. From gigging around the country, playing nearly a gig every day for a year, sofa surfing in London, to being discovered at the Foxxhole by Jamie Foxx, this is no X Factor story. Hard work and graft have cemented Ed’s place deservedly at the top of the charts. Never an artist to stand still, Ed recorded x at various locations around the globe (all the while drawing on experiences and influences encountered on his over three years of unrelenting touring). x has the musical ingredients to make it one of the most important global releases of this year. The new set showcases the exponential growth (both vocally and musically) of an incredible artist, who at 23 exhibits the poise of a seasoned veteran. The songs for x came together whilst touring + and, in the same way as the latter was a snapshot of his life and relationship to-date, x charts his loves and life since. Only ‘One’, the perfect album opener and first song written for the record (in 2011 whilst on tour in Australia) looks back to that time and is the link between the two records. With ‘One’ under his belt, almost before he noticed he was writing, Ed had ten new songs and counting. The breath-taking album-closer ‘Afire Love’ was written about his grandfather who passed away last Christmas. “Always the hero of the family - such a cool guy - he’d been suffering with Alzheimer’s for some time and I actually started writing that song two weeks before he passed away,” Ed says. “I was thinking ‘What if?’ and then he did…” Then there is the timeless ballad ‘Photograph’ written in May 2012 in a hotel room in Kansas whilst on tour with Snow Patrol. McDaid had a piano loop playing
on his laptop while Ed was making a Lego Xwing Fighter to give to a charity auction. He just started singing as he put the pieces together and the song grew from there. ‘Don’t’ started life as a riff on his phone and grew into another of x’s massive moments. The deluxe version of the album also includes the original song, ‘I See Fire’, which Ed wrote, produced and recorded for the second Hobbit movie. This was after Academy award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson personally commissioned him. With no promotion besides 3 tweets from his
personal twitter account, it reached #2 on the UK iTunes chart. However it’s the Pharrell-produced lead single ‘Sing’, that’s pushed the envelope for Ed. #Sing was the number one trend on twitter globally ahead of launch with the track immediately tearing up airwaves nationwide including a 7-week add to Radio 1 and an unprecedented addition straight to the Super Hit list at Capital FM and Kiss Network. “I’m really proud of my new album and can’t wait for people to hear it.” Ed says. “It’s definitely my best work.”
no stopping jendayi and wahdadah dance
G
rowing up in a notoriously tough area of Birmingham, Jendayi Selassie found an escape through her passion for dance and music.
Now, with support from the Government’s New Enterprise Allowance (NEA) scheme, the Birmingham entrepreneur is setting up her own dance company in the hope that it will inspire more young people from disadvantaged areas of Birmingham and encourage them to express themselves through music and movement. Jendayi’s new company, ‘Wahdadah Dance,’ has been set up as social enterprise to teach African and Caribbean traditional inspired movement fused with contemporary genres in schools, afterschool clubs and youth centres around the city, with a focus on motivating underprivileged teenagers. Financial support and expert mentoring to launch the company came from the NEA, which offers helps to jobseekers who have previously been on benefits to turn their business ideas into successful enterprises. The scheme is delivered on behalf of the Department for Work and Pensions in Birmingham and Solihull by public service provider A4e. Former youth worker
Jendayi, 29, said: “Without the NEA, the business would probably still be a dream. I’ve been running a dance troop and trying to turn it into business for a number of years, but it didn’t happen until the NEA made me complete it. The support I had was amazing – just getting the chance to put the basics down on paper set me in the right direction.” Recalling her childhood in Birmingham’s Winson Green and the inspiration behind Wahdadah Dance, Jendayi said: “I want people from my neck of the woods to realise that anything you want to achieve is possible. After all, I’m living proof of that. Through the dance company, our aim is to equip, inspire, motivate and empower young people to express themselves and overcome some of the issues they’re facing in a positive way.” Her dance troop currently meets in Aston, Birmingham, and the next step in her business plan is to triple the size of group and use the dance qualifications she gained at university and her experience in youth work to bring her classes to inner-city areas of Birmingham. She is keen to attract new students and would like to hear from organisations interested in hosting the classes. “The idea is that we’ll go out to them, to schools, after-school clubs and youth centres,” she said. “When we get enough capital behind us, we will set up a dance studio so that we can also help our students gain a qualification.” Jendayi praises the support she receives from her NEA adviser Tony Walters to help her achieve her dream. “His advice was exactly the advice I needed – and now there’s no stopping me.

Us ladies, we love our shoes, the variety, the styles and pattern we just love ‘em. Apart from stating the obvious, that they protect our feet from the ground, depending on the type of footwear they are they can inject a level of confidence in your swagger allowing you to walk like a BOSS and makes your calves look HOTTT! Is that pretence...Fake..A Front? When we wear heels not only we shoot up in height but we also appear slimmer, our legs look longer and automatically our walk changes...2 reasons why! 1. TO LOOK GOOD, we walk good to look good, sexy and appealing. Tummy goes in, shoulders go back to enhance the chest, back straight and legs go nicely in front of each other its almost like scene from transformers!

2, TO LOOK SENSIBLE, we walk right to stay upright! We don’t want gravity to win and pull us down to earth! No, no we carefully observe the surroundings taking a mental log of risen pavements, stones and sticks in the ground and animal waste! Sometimes when we wear flat shoes we become flat too! Dumpy and Slouchy the cousins of the seven dwarfs from Goldilocks and the three bears. WHY? Even if we simulate wearing heels and raise up to the tips of our toes we instantly fix-up and the posture is modelesque! Pretence is a rather strong word I think but, ladies and gents, lets keep it real, we like to look nice! Ashamedly enough some of us are willing to forfeit comfort over vanity!
