5 Proposals at a single ed sheeran gig! At a recent gig at London’s O2 Arena, during a single 2 hour set, there were a total of 5 marriage proposals in the crowd, making Ed Sheeran’s gig one of the most romantic places in the UK,at least for that night! The star even joked: “And don’t forget that when the day comes Ed is a great name for a baby boy or girl. Edward, Eddie, Edwina or even Edmund.” Time and time again, last weeks cover story, Ed, had to stop his set, to congratulate another couple. Speaking at the Xperia Access Q Awards on Wednesday (10.22.14), he told BANG Showbiz: “I think it’s great that my music inspired people to do that ... I was thinking though when the first guy proposed the other four guys must have been thinking, ‘Oh no, that was my idea!’ “ Ed is also pleased so many couples seem to have ‘Give Me Love’ or ‘Tenerife Sea’ as ‘their song’ as it would have been “weird” if the guys had proposed to his nonromantic tracks.

ell, well, well, its been a while since I wrote to you all - but that doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten about you all. So much for a nice quiet relaxing summer holiday with the kids - you will never guess where I ended up?

6 months ago, I would never ever have thought I would be sharing a house with Olympic Gold Medal winner Audley Harrison, never mind having him make me a cup of tea and bringing it to me in bed haha.

Jade Avia

COVER STORY

So how’re you today JADE? I’m really good, just come from the gym, so really high spirits, high energy!

Can you give our readers a bit of background about yourself? I’m Jade Avia, I present the Capital XTRA In The Morning with Kojo, and outside of that I do a bit of DJ’ing, I’m really into fashion and makeup, and I have my own bag range which is Jade Avia in collaboration with High Spirit and I’m also working with a great Bluetooth speaker called the Elevate Breve. You started IN radio in Birmingham with Unity and Newstyle, what drew you to radio in the first place? I went to Birmingham City University and I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do, kind of the same story as a lot of people who go to University, but once I started and got involved in different modules, I realised that I really really enjoyed radio! One of the things I loved about it was that you can’t be judged on what you look like, so when I was doing the presenter module I fell in love with it and decided that was what I wanted to do. I don’t like to be judged and I don’t like to judge, so I quite liked that people would have to get to know me through what I say to decide if they like me. It’s changed a lot now, because of the social media, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and all that you get a lot of pictures with that, but when I was at Uni a couple of years back, the internet really wasn’t even a big thing. It was more about the voice. What do you love most about working in radio? Working on such a large scale radio

show I get to meet so many different people and attend so many amazing events, it’s a job that involves me having a laugh with a friend on the radio, as far as jobs go I can’t think of anything better to do to be honest, I love it to bits! It’s my thing and always has been since I discovered it at university, it’s been what I’ve wanted to do and I’ve managed to achieve it!

Who has been your biggest inspiration? It’s weird, I sometimes ask myself why I’m so abnormally motivated, I gain inspiration from my family and I’m motivated by doing well for my family, and being successful to make my mum proud. I think I get inspiration from wanting to be original and different and wanting to inspire the younger generation, it’s a bit of a weird circle, but I’m inspired by people who want to be inspired I guess. There are so many things wrong with the world, that I want to kind of have a little bit of an input to try to help and fix it, and I’ve got younger sisters so it’s important to be successful and do right by them. You’re passionate about empowering young people, but what would you like to see in place to help young people get into media? My aim in the future is to set up some sort of academy, I’d love to be able to do that for young people to go to. I’d specifically like to set up something up for young females who are out of home to go to, I think those kinds of things are so important. When I had nowhere to live at like 16, I had a Key Worker, and without that Key Worker I just wouldn’t have applied to university and I owe her so so much.

I feel there should be so many more of those kinds of people around because it would make a difference to so many different people. I’m really into people being able to empower themselves, and definitely into female empowerment as well. Have you got any tips for anyone trying to get into radio? It’s all about building your personality before applying for any sort of radio job, so work on yourself, the platforms are all there, I’ve said it from years ago, but set up a YouTube channel, being on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc. Make sure that people are aware of you, and when you think you’ve listened to enough radio and understand the ins and outs a bit better, then put together a showreel, do it and send it out to as many radio stations as you possibly can. Out of all the people you have interviewed, who has been your favourite and who has stood out? Do you know, Denzel Washington is just such a lovely guy. I might be saying it because he was one of the most recent people who I’ve interviewed, but if I could have him as my granddad I would be so happy. I would be home with him all day and get him to speak to me about stuff! He is so lovely, he’s got this coolness and calmness about him that you just cannot buy. He’s just so cool, he’s such a cool guy and it’s so weird because

COVER STORY

that is really the only word that I can use to describe him, he is genuinely a really down to earth, just cool guy and really lovely to be around. Who has been the worst person you’ve had to interview and have you had to deal with any diva mentality. Luckily, throughout my career, I haven’t had any bad interviews as such. We’ve had one or two guests who have been a bit tired and groggy, but that’s understandable given their busy schedules. What’s next for you? Fashion side of things I’m really taking an interest in, I always have to tell you the truth, I’ve always taken that pride in how I look and I really do like different kinds of clothes as it’s a way of expressing yourself as well. So I want to explore that angle of things, obviously my bag range is doing really well at the moment, so I’ll continue with that. You’ve done some Television and Live Hosting, do you want to explore that a bit more? I do host gigs here and there, but it’s not something that I would put in front of radio. Radio is my main passion and will always come first. DJ gigs and Live Hosting, TV etc are all opportunities that I’d like to explore though in addition to my radio. How did your bag range come around? High Spirit hit me up wanting to give me one of their bags, and I was like oh my gosh, these bags are amazing! I said to my agent alright, how about I have every single one of the bags? They were like “OK Jade, we can’t give you every bag, but what we can do is how about we work together on a range?” They’re really cool bags, and the collection is called Jade Avia in Collaboration with High Spirit Bags. They are theft-proof, so the zip is on the inside of the bag, so it’s next to your back when you’re wearing the backpack. They’re really cool and there are loads of different fabrics, including like a black woven leather, blue snakeskin and rose gold. There are lots of quirky colours and stuff because I like to think I dress quite quirky, so it’s important that my bag range represents me as a person. So for anyone who is interested in bright bags or standing out from the crowd, this is definitely for you! How did your work with the Elevate Breve speaker come about? Obviously I live and breathe music and they got in touch and I thought the speaker was great! It’s a fraction of the price of the Jambox and just as good so I was really excited to launch their colour range. And finally have you got a message for your fans? My message for my supporters, anyone who has supported me is just thank you, hopefully I’m inspiring to people, and whatever it is you want to achieve then I hope you do it! Keep supporting me and I’ll do my best to support you where I can! Jade Avia is launching Elevate Breve’s brand new coloured speaker range. o many types - hiheeled, kitten heeled, stillettos, flats, pumps, ankle, calf and thigh length boots, espadrills, court shoes, wedge, sandals, flip flops, open toe, peep toe, I could go on for a long while... but I won’t!

Us ladies, we love our shoes, the variety, the styles and pattern we just love ‘em. Apart from stating the obvious, that they protect our feet from the ground, depending on the type of footwear they are they can inject a level of confidence in your swagger allowing you to walk like a BOSS and makes your calves look HOTTT! Is that pretence...Fake..A Front? When we wear heels not only we shoot up in height but we also appear slimmer, our legs look longer and automatically our walk changes...2 reasons why! 1. TO LOOK GOOD, we walk good to look good, sexy and appealing. Tummy goes in, shoulders go back to enhance the chest, back straight and legs go nicely in front of each other its almost like scene from transformers!

2, TO LOOK SENSIBLE, we walk right to stay upright! We don’t want gravity to win and pull us down to earth! No, no we carefully observe the surroundings taking a mental log of risen pavements, stones and sticks in the ground and animal waste! Sometimes when we wear flat shoes we become flat too! Dumpy and Slouchy the cousins of the seven dwarfs from Goldilocks and the three bears. WHY? Even if we simulate wearing heels and raise up to the tips of our toes we instantly fix-up and the posture is modelesque! Pretence is a rather strong word I think but, ladies and gents, lets keep it real, we like to look nice! Ashamedly enough some of us are willing to forfeit comfort over vanity!
