GRIMEY NEWS

Sorry girls… Clooney Claimed

T

he ceremony lasted about 10 minutes before newlyweds, Hollywood star George Clooney and British-based lawyer Amal Alamuddin emerged handin-hand for the first time as an official bride and groom at a star-studded wedding in Venice. And in keeping with the ‘private’ affair, attendees included Bill Murray, Matt Damon, Bono, Ellen Barkin, Anna Wintour, John Krasinski, and Emily Blunt, to name a few. Friends and family were given phones with a special code to use all weekend and were asked to leave the phones in their hotel rooms during the ceremony and reception. What a perfectly formed couple they make….RESULT George.

No Sound Without Silence

T

he Script announced the news their fans have been eagerly awaiting. In February 2015, the Irish three-piece will kick-off a UK arena tour, stopping at Birmingham’s LG Arena on the 26th. The tour announcement came hot on the heels of the release their fourth album ‘No Sound With-out Silence’ which immediately shot to #1 on the UK iTunes chart, and Top 10 in a further 42 countries. The album follows the ultra-catchy Top 3 smash hit ‘Superheroes,’ which is currently the most played track at UK radio, and is playlisted at Radio 1, Radio 2, Bauer and Capital FM. The video picked up over 5 million views. The Script will also be joined by very special guest Labrinth.

Jordin Sparks and Jason Derulo have finished, and Sparks didn’t exactly stop rumours of Derulo’s infidelities, saying “I actually don’t wanna comment on that.” when asked! Apparently though Jason was “a great guy,” but the pressure to get married was too much for the couple. Sad to see a relationship break down, but maybe it’s for the best for these two!

Two Birmingham Shows For Michael Bublé In December

C

rooner Michael Bublé will play two new arena shows in Birmingham to kick off his sold out UK tour on December 2 and 3 which will also see the official re-launch of the Barclaycard Arena, Birmingham. 150,000+ tickets were sold during a 10-date residency in London last summer, which was followed by a further 120,000 ticket sales for his recent shows in Manchester, Glasgow and Birmingham – all of which sold-out on the day they went on-sale. ‘To Be Loved’ is Michael Bublé’s sixth studio album following his ‘Christmas’ album

which sold seven million copies internationally and was the second biggest selling album of 2011. Now closing in on 700,000 sales in the UK alone where the album was his first to go straight to #1. The album also earned Michael his fourth Grammy Award when it won Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album Tickets for the Birmingham shows are on sale from Friday October 3, priced at £56.70, £67.90 & £84.70 (includes admin fee & £0.70 renovation levy) + £2.55 fulfilment fee.

Support grows for Tull Military Cross

F

by Steve Williams

or many years now, a campaign to honour World War 1 soldier, Walter Tull, with the Military Cross for brav-

ery. A former professional footballer, some of the biggest names, in and out of the game, have been lending their considerable support, fighting a rear guard action to make sure that the first Black officer in the British Army should be honoured. Ex-pros like Sol Campbell and Garth Crooks have led the way demand that Tull be recognised as a war hero and to grant him the posthumously recommended Military Cross that should have already been awarded. Walter, who was born in Folkstone, in Kent, in 1888, became the first Black professional football in English football when he played for Tottenham Hotspurs, between 1908 and 1910, before moving on to Northampton Town, where he played up till the outbreak of World War 1.

He abandoned his football career to join the 17th (1st Football) Battalion of Middlesex Regiment. During his military training he was promoted three times, serving in France, before being sent home, in 1915, for post traumatic stress disorder. He returned to Le Ciseaux in 1916 to fight in the Battle of the Somme, where he was commended and recommended, by his senior officers, to become an officer himself. He became a lieutenant in 1917 and was the first Black officer to lead a group of white soldiers into battle. Commended for his coolness under fire when sent to the Italian Front, Walter was recommended for a Military Cross but never received it.

Walter's former club, Tottenham Hotspur has supported the campaign calling on the Prime Minister to posthumously recognise their former player who became Britain’s first Black Army officer. A Spurs spokesman said: “The club has raised awareness of this campaign in the past in order to give our supporters the chance to

get involved. We have also assisted in supporting a number of events concerning Walter Tull and his portrait hangs proudly at White Hart Lane among a host of other players from the club’s past.” World War One hero Tull is to be featured on a special set of coins by the Royal Mint.

BIG SCREEN

The Wizard of Oz - IMAX Re-release Review

A

fter an enormous tornado hits her quiet hometown, Dorothy Gale is swept off to a magical land where she must embark on a perilous journey to meet The Wizard of Oz - the only man in this bizarre world who can help her return home. As baffling as it sounds, this year marks the 75th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz and in celebration, this cinematic masterpiece has been re-mastered and re-released in glorious IMAX 3D. You may have seen this movie countless times before, but you have never seen it quite like this. The re-mastered version is quite literally astounding. It may be seventy-five years of age, but it doesn’t look a day over fifty. The picture quality is crystal clear, the colours are more vibrant than ever and the sound is crisp. With a film as old as this one, there are a few inevitable issues that raise their ugly heads, but it is nothing too severe.

perfectly. I’d even go as far as saying that it’s one of the only films I have ever seen that is actually better in 3D. It improves the experience and adds a wonderful depth to the scenery, serving to enhance the already spectacular sets that are on display throughout. Whether it’s seeing the yellow brick road literally stretch out far into the distance or witnessing the enormous poppy field overwhelm the screen in all of its bright beauty, the 3D truly brings the Land of Oz to life. It’s also difficult to believe just how well the comedy holds up, seventy-five years later. Sure, some of it is extremely cheesy by today’s standards, like the ridiculous over-acting, but its all part of this film’s undeniable charm. However, there is one character in-particular that remains one of the funniest ever committed to film and that character is the Cowardly Lion. As the final character intro-

wORDS by antony brown

The main issue arises during scenes in which large groups of people are singing in unison, as their voices merge into a single bulbous mass of inaudible noise, making it rather difficult to decipher what they are singing about. However, as this only happens twice throughout the entire movie, it’s not a huge issue. The 3D post-conversion adds a whole new dimension to the film. Due to the fact it was not shot in 3D, it bears none of the gimmicks and clichés that often comes with films that are shot in 3D. You all know what I’m talking about – the whole “This film is in 3D so we need to have everything shoot towards the camera for no apparent reason. That will look totally awesome in 3D!” mentality. Sometimes, it can work; just look at Gravity for example. But most of the time, it comes across as a forced, gimmicky way of exploiting the medium. Thankfully, the 3D compliments The Wizard of Oz

duced, the phrase “saving the best ‘til last” has never felt so appropriate. As soon as he turns up, you will be left in fits of hysterics for the remainder of the film. Bert Lahr’s performance is an inspired piece of work and he steals absolutely every scene he is in. The rest of the cast are fantastic, too, but from the moment he shows up and starts sobbing after Dorothy smacks his nose to the moment the credits begin to roll, The Wizard of Oz belongs to the Cowardly Lion. The Wizard of Oz will forever be remembered as a classic. It is one of those films that will be passed down from generation to generation and I’m sure that another seventy-five years from now, somebody, somewhere will be writing about the 150th anniversary of this cinematic masterpiece. Regardless of how many times you have seen this movie, I implore you to track down your nearest IMAX theatre that is showing it, round up your friends, buy some tickets and get yourselves off to see the wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Us ladies, we love our shoes, the variety, the styles and pattern we just love ‘em. Apart from stating the obvious, that they protect our feet from the ground, depending on the type of footwear they are they can inject a level of confidence in your swagger allowing you to walk like a BOSS and makes your calves look HOTTT! Is that pretence...Fake..A Front? When we wear heels not only we shoot up in height but we also appear slimmer, our legs look longer and automatically our walk changes...2 reasons why! 1. Dumpy and Slouchy the cousins of the seven dwarfs from Goldilocks and the three bears. WHY? Even if we simulate wearing heels and raise up to the tips of our toes we instantly fix-up and the posture is modelesque!
