The city is beginning to open back up, but most Chicago events and gatherings are cancelled until further notice. We are replacing our usual calendar with recommendations from StreetWise vendors, readers and staff to keep you entertained at home! Vendor Donald Morris discusses COVID-19 and the NBA.

Cover Story: Black-Owned Businesses There used to be a time when people would have a hard time finding Black-owned businesses to patronize. Bigger companies have oppressed small business and placed burdens on low-income communities. Supporting Blackowned business can help close the racial wealth gap and give back to the communities that need it the most during the COVID-19 pandemic.

An Award-winning Local Play!

Looking Glass Theatre's "Eastland" As part of its Chicago Stories initiative, Lookingglass Theatre Company will stream its award-winning 2012 production of “Eastland: A New Musical,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, August 20. Moored on the Chicago River between Clark and LaSalle Streets on July 24, 1915, the Eastland began boarding as thousands of Western Electric employees and their families climbed the ramp, excited for their annual company outing. Overflowing with passengers, the boat leaned further and further to port – and soon tipped entirely on its side. Within minutes, cries filled the air, families were torn apart and unexpected heroes emerged to rescue dozens of Chicagoans. With 844 deaths, it is Chicago’s biggest loss-of-life tragedy. Playwright Andrew White says “Everyone knows about The Titanic, but comparatively few know of the Eastland disaster, even though it took place right in downtown Chicago. One reason may be that the Eastland passengers were working-class, first-generation immigrants who, like today, kept the country going but were too easily overlooked, discarded, and forgotten.” Lookingglass Artistic Director Heidi Stillman says, “So much of the story of the Eastland disaster feels deeply resonant with the current moment: how ordinary people are swept up in an historic event not of their making; how some respond with callousness and others with kindness and courage; and throughout it all, the need to preserve and tell our stories.”RSVP at https:// lookingglasstheatre.org/event/eastland-watch-party/ This virtual event will be streamed on YouTube and Facebook. Check back on the night of the event for the link! Proceeds will directly support the Looking Forward Campaign, a fundraising effort to sustain Lookingglass Theatre Company and its artists through the pandemic. -Compiled by Dave Hamilton

Vendor Donald Morris chats with Executive Assistant Patrick Edwards about the world of sports.

The many ways coronavirus is hurting the NBA Donald: The coronavirus is not the NBA’s friend. The situation is affecting the teams in negative ways, ways that affect the overall product. Patrick: What're you saying? I mean, I get that COVID-19 isn’t on anyone’s friendly side, but in regard to the negative ways affecting the overall product, in what way? Donald: Well, not only do a fair amount of teams have a few players confirmed with the virus, but the reports (underground) say there are quite a few more infected players than have been reported. Patrick: What are some of those teams affected?

Patrick: (Laughing) I still don’t know if you can pronounce it correctly, because I

Donald: Right! Denver has it really bad with its one confirmed case: Nikola Jokic. Dude is a beast. Patrick: He is. What else you got? Give me some more negative that the NBA will eventually shed? Donald: I like your confidence. Well, there are a couple of things I’ve noticed as this season gets moving. One, teams that are supposed to win are winning, and those that are not supposed to win are struggling to flip their script. I mean, even though better teams generally will win, the parity that is the NBA—generally, one or three teams that are truly championship material will cement it at the end. However, it seems as if during this COVID-19 period, there isn’t a ton of “any team could win this” vibes. Patrick: Interesting. Donald: Also, there seems to be less running up and down the court. My guess is that it’s due to the coronavirus. Because of the unconfirmed reports, the virus could be spreading, and it’s also possible that some may test “well.” Other reasons could fall on the isolation down in the Orlando bubble, isolating players

from previously outside-thearena activities as well as from family and friends. This could eventually lead to a mental collapse of some sort…but I’m going to do my best to, simply, think best. Patrick: Think that’s all that’s needed for this to get better? For us to “think best”? Donald: Shoot, I wish that were all. No, I believe we need a task force, one that’ll get folks up to speed with what’s really going on. The NBA needs to better educate its players (and others caught in the vicinity) in regard to how the coronavirus is caught, spread and, hopefully eradicated from our lives. Patrick: I get you a little bit. You're saying the NBA’s all right, but there needs to be

a tightening of adherence to the policies that are in place? Donald: Yeah, and it doesn’t help that we have a president who is incapable of providing useful guidance—shoot, for the NBA and/or us as an entire community. The man is simply not an effective communicator. Patrick: Even if he did have the answer, do you believe we’d eventually get things right? Donald: Nope. Sad, but true. And you know what? The tripped-out thing is that I’m still looking forward to this season. If you have any comments or questions, please e-mail us at pedwards@streetwise.org

www.streetwise.org

SPORTSWISE

Donald: Well, Brooklyn is easily at the top of their game—at least in regard to the confirmed coronavirus cases. We know of Kevin Durant, Michael Beasley, DeAndre Jordan, Justin Anderson, Spencer Dinwiddie, Taurean Prince; now, mind you, the first three listed could lead a team as starters. Houston has its fair share of confirmed cases: Russell Westbrook, who’s back in action, but who appears slightly sluggish, Thabo Sefolosha, and Luc Mbah a Moute—didn’t think I could pronounce that, did you?

don’t know how the heck to pronounce it! But, go on, sir.

ANDYSUNFLOWER CAFÉ Plenty of people like to start off their day with a fresh cup of coffee. What better place to go for a daily dose of caffeine than AndySunflower Café? Andy Robinson, the owner of AndySunflower Café, started from humble beginnings in her kitchen. She was known to make tea and specialty coffee for friends and family when they visited her home. Not long after that, people began asking her to make coffee for their next work shifts and lattes for other events. Her business couldn’t have started without some help from her biggest supporters. “I was encouraged by my family to actually start a business, which I never intended to do,” Robinson said. “It was family that encouraged me to do so.” Robinson’s business continued to blossom from there. The Black Lives Matter movement has impacted plenty of businesses like Robinson’s cafe. She said that the movement exposed her business to people who weren’t aware of it before. People tagged her on social media platforms, and it paved the way for new customers. They swarmed to her and were interested in what her cafe had to offer. Although the movement had a great impact on AndySunflower Café’s exposure, Robinson was still known to reel in customers with her great customer service and trademark coffee and tea, many of which can’t be found at bigger chains. Her success brought her to new heights. “I moved up to serving coffee to the NBA staffers that worked outside during the All-Star game,” Robinson said. “So that was a huge accomplishment for my small business.” People can expect to find plenty of fan-favorite specialty drinks, also known as Andy’s Trademark drinks, at the cafe. Customers who are looking for a “savory sweet caramel” latte can try The Bourbon. For those who prefer something sweeter with a hint of cinnamon, the Maple Magic latte is sure to please. The seasonal Peach Mint tea is also another drink to look out for, but due to high demand, it is only available to purchase inside the cafe. Gallons of it can also be preordered. A bicycle delivery service for customers craving coffee within a one-mile radius was intended to launch prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. In hopes of accommodating customers in the midst of the pandemic, Robinson began offering online ordering, which proved to be another large success. Customers can also look forward to the cafe selling apparel and whole coffee beans in the coming months. It is Robinson’s dedication to her craft and passion to bring people together through her innovative creations that put a spotlight on her business. “My bar is small,” Robinson said. “But we do really big things behind there so I’m proud of that.”

BASEHIT BBQ & CATERING Anyone craving juicy flavorful ribs, chicken and sandwiches can go to BaseHit BBQ & Catering! The restaurant is currently owned by father and son duo, Tony and Anthony Garland. The Garland family held barbeque reunions in their backyard when Anthony Garland was a young boy. Barbecuing was just a fun hobby, but then talks of starting a restaurant spurred the family. They eventually decided to create a catering business first. After Anthony Garland had finished college, he found out his father had gotten laid off. They were able to start catering with the help of a cousin who rented his kitchen out to them. Four to five years later, they saved up enough money to open up a restaurant for their eager customers. Garland made sure that customers were satisfied with the food and the service. “Everybody’s involved and we really work to make this thing happen,” Garland said. BaseHit continues to offer catering alongside the restaurant and is known to use their signature “BASE” sauce when preparing their meats. Garland says that they use a wet rub instead of a dry rub to season and smoke everything. The wet rub naturally makes the meat juicier and more delicious. Their seasoning has become so popular with customers that people began asking about buying the sauce to bring home. Garland has noted that they are also currently working on bottling their special sauce to sell in the near future. The pandemic took a toll on BaseHit in April when they had to close down due to the uncertainty of the virus. However, after they were able to open again in May, customers came to their door and business was back to normal. The only difference is, now all employees get their temperature checked, masks and gloves are always used, and employees make sure to wash their hands. In June, the Black Lives Matter movement erupted all over the world. It’s helped put so many other businesses on the map and made people aware of them, including BaseHit. “We are a Black-owned business,” Garland said. “I think that the Black Lives Matter movement and everything going on in society right now has really built some encouragement for

people to start supporting more Black-owned businesses.” BaseHit’s success kept climbing when they won the Chicago RibFest two years ago. They were also the winners of the WingOut and were recently featured on WGN’s Chicago’s Best. Garland said that he hopes to make the customers feel like they’re at a “barbecue at a baseball game.” Plenty of baseball memorabilia line the red walls of the restaurant. The owners make sure their customers enjoy their time in their restaurant and know they’re being served high quality food. Their dedication to their work and their customers is what keeps them moving forward. “We just put love behind everything we do,” Garland said. “So whether it’s, you know, cooking the food, cleaning the kitchen, preparing the food and getting it ready to go out. We try to instill love in everything that we do and passion in every step.”
