The top sports stories of 2024
John: What are your Top 3 sports stories of 2024?
Allen: The Kansas City Chiefs in back-to-back Super Bowl Championships with Patrick Mahomes and then UConn as NCAA champions, then the Dodgers and New York Yankees in the World Series. That’s a great rivalry. They have met 12 times. I went with New York because they had two chances to go to the World Series: the Yankees and the Mets. I am looking forward to seeing if Kansas City can do it again. I am not sure if UConn can. I believe the Dodgers may come back and if so, I think New York can too.
William: I agree with Allen. If the Cubs can take all these years and go into the locker room a final time and say, “Maybe next year,” why can’t the rest of us dream too. The Yankees won one game against the Dodgers, which gives them a little happier news than the Cubs. Remember the first round of playoffs in 2008 with the Dodgers? The Cubs didn’t win one. It would have been more fun to see the Yankees get it than the Dodgers. At that, the Yankees have won more World Series than any other team and been in more World Series than any other team.
John: Why Yankees over Dodgers? This was the highest-rated World Series.
William: I am not a California guy. I’m more of a Heartland guy. My stepfather was a Yankees fan, and my mom liked the Mets because back in the late 1960s, she had a crush on Tom Seaver.
John: Does this Series bring people back to baseball? I think it does.
Russell: The Dodgers won the World Series in dramatic fashion. They were down by five runs...I turned the channel for just a minute, and they came back to win Game 5 by 7-6. Just shows, no lead is safe in baseball. Congratulations, Dodgers. You played the way you were supposed to play: take care of business. I wanted to see game 7, but there wasn’t one. Congratulations White Sox. You got the record for worst-ever season. Kansas City won the Su-
per Bowl. They didn’t have a dominating year, but I say they were that good because they beat teams they were supposed to beat.
John: Kansas City was most impressive because they won back-to-back. Because football is a contact sport, there’s potential for injuries every time.
UConn wasn’t as dramatic because UConn was the most dominant team in men’s college basketball. The DodgersYankees was the highest-rated World Series because of the fan base, according to sleeper. com. As far as bringing people back to baseball, Texas and Arizona won’t do it. Nor will Minnesota and Miami or Baltimore and Colorado. You gotta have teams like New York Yankees, Dodgers, Cubs, Red Sox, and to a lesser extent, St. Louis Cardinals. You have people all over the world being Dodger fans, Cubs fans, Yankee fans. People who don’t follow probably
don’t know who the Arizona Diamondbacks are.
Russell: I am disappointed this year because there were no Chicago teams in playoffs.
William: I wish Chicago had been in at least one championship. The only thing we got included in was losing.
John: Repeating in football is the hardest thing to do. If the Kansas City Chiefs do a threepeat, that would be an alltimer. I think UConn is on the verge of a dynasty, like Duke or UCLA used to be. Congratulations to the Boston Celtics for winning their 18th NBA title. I wouldn’t be surprised if they win No. 19 this year, although Cleveland may have something to say about it.

Reducing stress at the workplace
Workplace stress is common and can happen to anyone. Good mental health helps employees stay happy and productive. But poor mental health can lead to lower productivity, more sick days, and higher staff turnover.
Anxiety, depression, and burnout can make it hard for employees to focus, make decisions, and work well with others. There are ways to help reduce stress and create a healthier work environment. Here are some simple tips:
1. Balance Between Work and Personal Life
It's important to have a healthy balance between work and personal life. This can be done through:
• Flexible Hours: Let employees plan their work hours to better fit their personal schedules if possible.
• Remote Work: Offer the option to work from home when possible.
• Vacation Time: Encourage employees to take their vacation days to recharge and reset.
2. Supportive Work Environment
A supportive work environment can considerably reduce stress. This can be done through:
• Open Communication: Give employees space to talk openly about their stress and mental health without fear of judgment. Train managers and supervisors to recognize and respond to signs of mental distress.
• Short Breaks: Encourage employees to take short breaks throughout the day to rest and recharge.
• Lunch Breaks: Make sure employees take their full lunch break away from their desks.
• Exercise Programs: Offer on-site fitness classes or gym memberships. Physical activity is a great way to reduce stress.
3. Growth Opportunities
Growth opportunities allow employees to feel valued and confident. This can reduce stress and increase job satisfaction. This can be done through:
• Recognition Programs: Create or work with programs to recognize and reward employees for their hard work and achievements.
• Positive Feedback: Regularly provide positive feedback and appreciation for employees' efforts.
• Skill Development: Provide training sessions to help employees learn new skills.
• Career Advancement: Offer paths for career advancement within the organization.
4. Realistic Workloads
Make sure that workloads are doable to prevent work stress. How to achieve this:
• Set Realistic Goals: Help employees set reachable goals and deadlines.
• Assign Tasks: Divide tasks evenly among your team.
Lowering stress in the workplace is important to maintain healthy and productive teams and a positive work environment. By taking the above steps, employers can help reduce stress and improve the overall well-being of their employees, which can lead to a stronger company as a whole.
