artists to make hand-screened designer T-shirts and other merchandise to sell. This year, 32 artists donated designs. It’s all part of a campaign called GiveAShi*t. 100% of the profits go to StreetWise. To date, GiveAShi*t has donated over $140,000 to StreetWise. “People in Chicago are always looking for different ways to give back to those in need and GiveAShi*t offers a chance to buy meaningful holiday gifts for friends and family while supporting the hardworking vendors of StreetWise,” said Scott Marvel, president of Daily Planet Productions and mastermind behind the GiveAShi*t Campaign. StreetWise helps homeless and at-risk individuals seeking to build a better life with employment opportunities. It provides a dignified means of addressing the crisis of poverty and homelessness, and provides individuals with immediate access to a respectable and legitimate earned income through their own hard work. Well-known on the streets of Chicago, StreetWise vendors make their own way to the StreetWise office where they pay $.90 for the magazine they then sell for $2, making a $1.10 profit on each sale. The shirts can be purchased online at www.giveashirt.net. Select designs are also available as tote bags, notebooks, coffee mugs, posters and hand towels.

THANK YOU by BETSY LAM
Alyssa Arnesen is a graphic designer practicing at Span in Chicago. She hopes the caveats of partisan politics that stand in the way of repairing and revitalizing our environment can be resolved before it’s too late.
My drawings explore loss & discovery, and trauma & joy. I'm interested in how the migration from pain to solace connects us to the self & to others. I have a healthy obsession with mayonnaise, I work as a web developer, love to rock climb, and live in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood with my 7-year-old son and our curmudgeon pup. www.instagram.com/lotusgirl.ig

ON THE MEND by HEATHER BARNES & SHAWN WILLIAMS
THE LONG ARC by JEANNINE RINGLAND ZWIRN
A visual illustration of mending a world torn in two by political division, racial injustice, economic disparities, and a thriving pandemic. Heather is a Creative Director in Chicago who works on brand development on various beer, wine and spirits accounts. Shawn is an illustrator and graphic designer in Wisconsin. The long-distance couple is currently quarantining together and they love collaborating on art and design in their spare time.
Theodore Parker tells us that he cannot see the entire arc, “My eye reaches but little ways” and we are only on a small path of this arc. We must remember that behind the words of Parker is the need to work continually toward justice and peace. The arc will not bend toward justice without the the long-term effort of everyday people like you and I. After a long career in corporate sales, Jeannine now works for Daily Planet and uses her retail sales skills at Giveashirt.
REBUILD by JOHN POBOJEWSKI
IT COMES FROM THE BEGINNING by JON LANGFORD
We have all the pieces — we just need the will to put them back together. John Pobojewski is a partner and design director at Span, focusing on intermedia and the blending of brand, interactive, sound, motion, and environments. .
It comes from a song I’m currently working on called "Big Red Angel," which incorporates a bunch of myths and legends common to many cultures about an angel who turns up to restore justice and avenge the downtrodden in times of great trouble and distress (like now). Jon Langford is an artist and musician from Wales who has lived in Chicago since 1992. He plays with several bands and spends a lot of time sitting alone in his painting studio dreaming of home...

FROM THE HANDS OF BABES by JULIO DESIR
SPACE BETWEEN US by KARA HAMILTON
A simple visual story that alludes to the hope we place upon the next generation to repair the issues we've created today. At a very early age, Julio was drawn to art. Corny, but true. He declined an appointment at West Point to study graphic design at Michigan State instead. Today, he is a creative director in Chicago leading the creation of brand, design, digital and social content for various blue-chip accounts.
I wanted to do something that sums up how far apart we’ve felt from each other and our loved ones, and to give some perspective so we can start seeing more of our connectedness and not our separation moving forward. Kara Hamilton is an Art Director and artist living in Chicago. Her work spans design, illustration, photography, and video, and she has created innovative content for global brands.

SAVE THE WORLD, STAY IN BED by MIKI STRAUS
CHEAT YEAR by NATE AZARK
Miki Straus graduated from Maryland Institute College of Art in 2018, and is a mixed media cartoon-and-gamemaker living in Chicago. In addition to personal and perofessional work, Miki teaches middle schoolers how to make games and animations. Miki doesn't have a lot of time to stay in bed, but is certainly staying at home right now.
We are dealing with situations we couldn't have possibly planned for, and I've seen my community struggle. Hopefully we can get back on track soon and, in the meantime, have a cheat day every now and then. Nate thrives at the intersection of branding, packaging and illustration. He's inspired by travels around the world and all things Chicago. He strives to find ways to give back to the community and to help those in need, which is why he loves working with GiveAShi*t every year.
EYES ON THE PRIZE by NICK ADAM
PLANET OF THE APES by RICK CONRAD
To repair the world we must intentionally lock our gaze to the world. Nick Adam is a Chicago graphic designer practicing at Span. He views graphic design as an integral form of public works that connects us all.
I thought of Rheinhold’s “Monkey with Skull” statue. Instead of the monkey philosophizing about the evolution of man, he ponders the evolution of our world. If we can’t seem to repair what we’ve broken, perhaps our ape friends can. So simple, even a monkey can do it? Rick Conrad likes to make stuff. He dabbles in illustration, painting, songwriting, poetry, photography... Conrad is proud to be a part of GiveAShi*t since its inception.

GREEN IS GROOVY by SAMANTHA CONRAD
NEEDLE WORK by SARAH BECAN
I chose to throw it back to an era where environmentalism really started coming into fruition, the 1960's + 1970's. It's time to reprioritize the planet, and step back into being "Green" as our duty in being a good-hearted, aware, kind, (and groovy) human being! Sammy Conrad is a freelance graphic designer and yoga instructor. Sam was honored to create a shirt design this year after watching her dad, Rick Conrad, create rad designs for GiveAShi*t since it began.
A strong seam is made up of many tiny stitches, each of them equally important. Repairing the world might be an overwhelming task, but it's made up of the small steps we take towards building a better world. Sarah Becan has been drawing comics since she was very small. Her autobiographical webcomic "I Think You're Sauceome" sparked a love of food and culinary illustration. Her first graphic novel, "The Complete Ouija Interviews," won a Xeric award.
BEAR HUG by ROB CODY
TRUST FAUCI by RON LINNEMANN
With the theme being "Repair the world," I wanted to show a bit of what we all could use right now, a great big ole bear hug. Rob Cody is a Creative Director at 160over90 by day and an artist/ illustrator by night. He aims to bring a little humor and humanity to all his work. .
We all need to do our part, follow the experts, and trust the science to get through the pandemic. For six years and counting, Ron has had the honor of being part of the GiveAShi*t team as both a contributing artist and screen printer. He's also been in the Chicago advertising scene for over 20 years, producing creative TV and print ads and building successful brands and great friendships along the way.

REPAIR THE WORLD by SARAH SANTI
My goal was to illustrate the nurturing capabilities of humanity in such a way that it bends with the Earth. Born around Chicago and currently residing in Logan Square, Sara is both a freelance Animator and Illustrator. She brings her life to work both digitally and with traditional media such as watercolor.
Simple, calming, hopeful. Even if it meant staying up late to draw and redraw after days full of challenges. Making art for me is repair. I am so honored to be a tiny fragment of the repair this effort imparts on the world. Sarah Santi is a Chicago-based (ok, suburbs of Chicago-based) designer and painter. TRES STRIPES by SCOTT MARVEL
This year has been a challenge for every person on this planet. It’s been a particularly challenging year for the vendors of StreetWise. Already on the cusp of homelessness, they saw their jobs disappear when the city shut down. StreetWise stayed open through everything, offering meals and comfort to all of its 120 vendors. They launched an emergency fundraising campaign to support the livelihood of everyone to keep them off the streets and at risk of death.
Scott Marvel is the president of Daily Planet Productions by day. Early in the morning and late at night he enjoys screen printing in his unfinished basement, while listening to RTE One from Ireland or WFMU from New Jersey. He started the site teetsy.com (www.instagram.com/teetsy) in 2005. In 2015, he started GiveAShi*t, hoping to put some good back in . the world through art. .

MONKEY MAYHEM by SCOTT RASMUSSEN
We helped StreetWise create video content for the “20 Most Inspiring Chicagoans” event. Our eyes were opened to not only the troubles of our world, and Chicago, but also to people in this city who see a problem, and they do what they can to ease the burden of their fellow Chicagoans. There are a thousand points of light that you never hear of on the evening news, doing the good, hard, and necessary work to make the world a better place. Let’s do our work.
“This is a true event that really happened. You can look it up. History!!!!” Scott is a creative director and designer at The Specialists, a boutique ad agency start-up. Repairing the world, that's gotta start somewhere, right? Understanding (and helping) others might begin if people would just "reach across" to one another.

about STREETWISE StreetWise provides Chicagoans in need with “a hand up, not a handout.” StreetWise creates employment opportunities for individuals who are homeless or experiencing poverty. Anyone who wants to work has the opportunity to move themselves out of crisis. How it all began... It’s hard to believe that 28 years ago on Aug. 24, 1992, the first edition of StreetWise hit the streets of Chicago. Our founder, Judd Lofchie, found a practical solution to the crisis of homelessness in Chicago. The idea was simple: give homeless men and women a chance to gain economic self-sufficiency, personal dignity, and to help themselves by selling a newspaper to earn an income rather than begging. More than 350 homeless men and women purchased and sold more than 60,000 issues of StreetWise within the first 5 weeks! Selling StreetWise is a job. Our vendors are self-employed entrepreneurs. Our success is due to the commitment, dedication, and persistence of our StreetWise magazine vendors. They go out each day to greet you – their loyal customers. It is because of your support that our vendors can pay rent, utilities, purchase food and clothing, and even save some money.
BETTER SOON, THX by TRAVIS LAMPE The world has taken a beating. Let’s fix this place up! Don’t forget to sign the cast. Travis is an artist based in Chicago who paints sad, angry and/or drunk things, usually, but in a fun way. He never paints elbows or knees, instead favoring an elbow and kneeless style inspired by old-timey cartoons and Dr. Seuss.
