A Paige From My Notebook...

Dear Readers,

This month, we proudly present our “WomenOwned Businesses” feature, which celebrates the leadership, innovation and influence of women making a significant impact in their fields. This feature serves as an inspiration to other aspiring female leaders and showcases their importance in our daily lives. From breaking barriers to shaping industries, this feature highlights just some of the significant local women that are making a difference in our economy

As the President of Strictly Business, I want to take a moment to highlight the incredible power of local printed magazines, especially when combined with the strength of a strong website. In a world where digital media often takes the spotlight, the enduring value of print remains stronger than ever—particularly when it’s deeply connected to the community it serves.

event information, and a place for readers to engage with important content that was created years ago, working long after the print edition has been read. In a typical month our websites will generate over 52,000 pageviews and over 1.3 million search engine impressions for our clients.

Our website also enables us to reach new audiences beyond our print circulation, ensuring that the stories, people and businesses we showcase are accessible to a broader audience. It also means more visibility for our advertisers, providing them with both the prestige of being featured in print and the reach of digital.

In an era where digital noise and social media platforms can often bury and drown out local voices, we are proud to say that local publications like Strictly Business is a powerful force in preserving and promoting the unique flavor and power of our community.

At Strictly Business, we are committed to delivering the highest-quality content in print, while also providing a robust and complete digital experience.

At Strictly Business, our print publication represents more than just pages of articles. It is a tangible connection to the local businesses, stories and achievements that make our community special. There’s something uniquely powerful about flipping through a magazine, discovering new businesses, reading about local people and feeling a direct connection to the community. Print engages in a way that’s personal and lasting, offering readers a break from the digital overload that often surrounds us.

But in today’s evolving media landscape, printed magazines aren’t isolated—they thrive when they’re paired with a well-crafted, comprehensive website. This combination gives readers the best of both worlds: the intimacy of print and the accessibility of digital. A magazine you can hold in your hands provides depth and reflection, while our dynamic website extends that experience, offering real-time updates,

Together, print and digital offer the perfect synergy—one that preserves the timeless appeal of a local magazine while harnessing the power of modern technology to amplify its impact. For readers, it’s a richer experience. For businesses, it’s a broader more impactful platform. And for the community, it’s the best way to stay connected and informed.

At Strictly Business, we are committed to delivering the highest-quality content in print, while also providing a robust and complete digital experience. Thank you for continuing to support us, our advertisers and our city as we celebrate the power of local in every format.

Top Cybersecurity Threats & Solutions in 2024

As October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, it’s crucial to address the growing threat of cybercrime. According to Cybersecurity Ventures, damages from cybercrime are expected to reach $9.5 trillion globally in 2024, with projections of $10.5 trillion annually by 2025.

While cybercrime is inevitable, vigilance and the right partner can significantly protect your business. Here are the top cybersecurity threats and solutions for 2024:

TOP CYBERSECURITY WEAK SPOTS FOR BUSINESSES

1. Generative AI: As this technology grows, so do its potential risks. Cybersecurity experts need to monitor for new vulnerabilities and AI-powered attacks.

2. Insider Threats: Whether intentional or not, employee error remains the top cause of successful cyberattacks.

3. IT Skills Gap: The demand for cybersecurity talent outpaces supply. Companies are increasing training and development efforts to bridge this gap.

4. Internet of Things (IoT) Devices: While IoT adoption improves efficiency and security, it also creates new entry points for cybercriminals.

5. Bring Your Own Device (BYOD): The rise of remote and hybrid work has made BYOD commonplace. Companies must deploy mobile device management (MDM) solutions to enforce security policies.

TOP CYBERSECURITY SOLUTIONS

1. Security Behavior and Culture Programs (SBCPs): These programs are crucial for minimizing cyber incidents associated with employee behavior.

2. Zero Trust: This framework treats all network access attempts, internal or external, as potential threats.

3. Continuous Threat Exposure Management (CTEM): CTEM offers a pragmatic, automated approach to monitoring and assessing cyberattack surfaces for accessibility, exposure, and exploitability.

4. Identity & Access Management (IAM): With the rise in credential-based breaches, robust IAM systems with secure multi-factor authentication are essential.

5. Disaster Recovery (DR) & Backup: To ensure business continuity during crises, companies are implementing robust DR and backup solutions.

Businesses don’t have to face cybercrime alone. Partnering with a managed services provider (MSP) like Cox Business can provide access to cutting-edge security solutions backed by a team of seasoned experts, with 24/7/365 customer support.

Omaha-based healthcare company Fusion is celebrating 15 years of being in business by reflecting on the milestones achieved along the way and thanking the people who made Fusion Medical Staffing, Fusion Workforce Solutions, and a lasting, vibrant culture all possible.

From a basement office with five employees to the new headquarters space, designed by and for employees, Fusion’s leaders have always had one thing in mind: “How can we improve the lives of everyone we touch?”

“That core purpose is what keeps us grounded and moving in the right direction,” said Founder Sam Wageman. “Of course, we had big aspirations when we started this journey in 2009, but we could not have made the impact we’ve made in these 15 years without the amazing team we have here, our loyal travelers providing excellent patient care, and the facility partners who trust us to supply them with the best healthcare talent we can find.”

Major milestones in the company’s history include broadening its impact through the development of the eight healthcare modalities it staffs, becoming Joint Commission Certified and maintaining the certification year after year, being repeatedly recognized as a best place to work in Omaha and among the industry, and evolving into a company supporting two business units aimed at improving the clinician experience and patient care.

One big aspiration Fusion is taking on is its mission to Refresh Healthcare. The company is doing this through innovative thinking on how to ultimately improve patient care any way it can, including more support programs for travelers and quicker connections to travelers for healthcare facilities.

Their meeting space and Fowling lanes can accommodate up to 350 guests. They have full A/V capabilities, two full bars, 30 huge HD TV’s, large screen projectors and thorough music selections.

It really is an investment for any group in Omaha who strives for more performance from their employees.”

Business Ethics Alliance Hosts Fall Mind CandyDialogue:"PastEthicalIssues,Present Ethical Perceptions"

Caretech Expands Senior Care Services Through CareScout Partnership

The Business Ethics Alliance invites business leaders and professionals to the Fall Mind Candy Dialogue, a signature event fostering engaging discussions on contemporary business ethics. The event will take place on Thursday, October 24, from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Scott Conference Center, located at 6450 Pine St

Event Topic: "Past Ethical Issues, Present Ethical Perceptions"

Topic Description: Sometimes, past unethical decisions and missteps shake the public's trust in an organization that those mistakes won’t be repeated. The bigger and more public the ethical misstep, the more likely a negative perception will play a role in developing and/or maintaining future business relationships with the organization. How can we trust that an organization is authentically ethical in its changes rather than putting up a front to get back to business as usual?

Join Dr. AnnMarie Marlier, Executive Director of the Business Ethics Alliance, and Erin Owen, President of Clarity Channels Communication, as they facilitate a lively discussion using ethical decision-making case studies.

About Mind Candy Dialogues

Mind Candy Dialogues take intriguing and contemporary business ethics headlines and invite a respectful exchange of opinions in an open, honest setting. Attendees listen to and engage with panelists and each other to reach a deeper understanding of the topic at hand. These events will broaden your perspective and equip you with positive, practical knowledge to make ethical decisions in business.

Who Should Attend

We anticipate 80-120 attendees at this event. Typical participants include business executives, senior leaders, human resources professionals and managers across all sectors of business. Ethics are for everyone—if you make decisions at your organization in any way, this event is for you.

Registration and Contact Information

While participants enjoyed the event, they were also dining out for a cause! During Hunger Action Month, a portion of Restaurant Week’s proceeds benefitted Food Bank for the Heartland.

ARON

Aron

GREATER OMAHA CHAMBER

Meet Aron Wehr, the Vice President of Marketing & Communications at the Greater Omaha Chamber.

Tell us a little about your business. - The Greater Omaha Chamber is the voice for business in our region. We have a vast business network with members of all industries and sizes – and this is our ultimate source of strength. By staying as close as possible to our members, we are able to best serve them and our community at large.

How did you get started in the business? - I started my career working on Capitol Hill, where I had the honor of working in both the House of Representatives and the United States Senate. Although you may work in Washington, D.C., it is your job to know the district (or state) you work for front and back. I found that one of the best liaisons for knowing the temperature of each community was their local Chamber of Commerce. The more I worked with them, the more I gained a huge respect for the work Chambers do and the crucial role they fill. When I moved back to Omaha, I jumped at the chance to work for my hometown Chamber.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - My mom is the youngest of 18 kids: If you are reading this, statistically, you are probably my cousin.

Who inspires you? - Winston Churchill – I love history! To me, one of the most important moments of history was right after the Fall of France in World War Two. To most of the world, the war was lost. Churchill had only been Prime Minister for two months and even members of his own cabinet were clamoring for surrender. The almost superhuman fortitude he showed throughout to pursue victory “however long and hard the road may be,” when there was seemingly no chance for success, is the reason we live in a free world today. Very inspiring!

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - Not necessarily a quote, but a great marketing lesson I learned. My wife Lauren and I love Shark Tank and we are always able to take lessons from the show into our professional life. One of Mark Cuban’s running themes is how you are very unlikely to change consumer behavior. Unless you have a totally revolutionary idea that is going to change the way people operate, your best bet is incorporate your idea into their existing lives/patterns and to be memorable.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - In Marketing and Communications, I think the biggest challenge is always knowing the pulse of your target audience. Your organization’s values and mission should never change. However, it is your job to apply your message to evolving circumstances in a new, exciting, and edible way that your target audience will take with them.

What is your favorite movie? - Goodfellas

What has been your most important achievement professionally? - My favorite project I ever worked on was in 2022, the Greater Omaha Chamber released our Urban Core Strategic Plan. I was able to work with a great writer at the Omaha World Herald, Henry Cordes, to dive deep in every facet of the plan and why it mattered for Omaha. We ended up making a huge splash with the announcement and our story made the front page of the Omaha World Herald three days in a row. I have all three pages framed side-by-side together in my office.

CHAD

Meet Chad McCarthy, a BIM Implementation

Tell us a little about your business. - Farris Engineering has been a leader in mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering since we started in Omaha in 1967. We’re an employee-owned company, which means everyone here is deeply invested in our success. Our team is skilled in a range of areas, including LEED certification, fire protection, geothermal and lighting design and energy conservation. We also specialize in technology systems and commissioning. We're headquartered in Omaha, but we have additional offices in Lincoln, Sidney, Colorado Springs, Sterling, Kansas City and Council Bluffs.

How did you get started in the business? - I started in the A/E sector nearly 20 years ago as a plumbing designer.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? - My most significant professional achievement has been earning my CPD and GPD certifications through ASPE, along with my recent promotion to Business Development at Farris Engineering. Being involved with clients and helping them bring their buildings to life has been a major milestone in my career.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - On my days off, I love spending time outdoors and making the most of my free time with family. We often go camping together, which is a great way to unwind and enjoy nature. I also enjoy riding my motorcycle, which gives me a sense of freedom and adventure. In addition, watching movies with my family is a favorite pastime of mine as it’s a great way for us to relax and bond. Occasionally, I like to play a round of golf and engage in target shooting.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - An interesting fact about me that many people might not know is that I am a first-generation American. My mother’s family immigrated to the US from Indonesia, and I’m proud of my heritage and the rich cultural background it brings.

If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - If I could choose any other profession and be successful at it, I think I would love to build custom motorcycles. The craftsmanship and creativity involved in designing and creating unique bikes really appeal to me.

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? - One of my all-time favorite books is The Lord of the Rings.

What is your favorite local Omaha restaurant? - One of my favorite local restaurants (as I have more than one) is Texas de Brazil! If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? - James Earl Jones.

Tell us a little about your family. - I’m originally from a suburb, just south of Denver. I moved to Omaha in 2009 to attend Creighton University, and never left. I love this city! I’m the oldest of three boys. My parents and younger brothers still live in Colorado, so we get back two to three times a year. I grew up in a very competitive home. This inspired me to play football, basketball and baseball in high school. My drive and work ethic comes from my mom. She pushed me every day to be great on and off the field/court.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - It’s tough to pinpoint one experience, but I’d say the most important decision I’ve made is to get married and begin my role as a husband. My wife and are building a wonderful life together.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Anytime I can Golf, sign me up! I also enjoy working out and taking trips to visit friends and family.

Who inspires you? - There’s probably a dozen people in my life who inspire me; however, my wife Francesca and my mother are at the top of the list. I’d regret not to mention Amy Knobbe and Taylor Stormberg, Pando’s co-founders. They inspire our team every day.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - My high school basketball coach started every practice with this quote, and it’s stuck with me all these years. “Your attitude and how hard you work, are your only guarantees.”

If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Genuine or Authentic.

What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life? - I’m one hell of a dancer! You’ll find me in the middle of the dance floor at every wedding.

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read?Green Lights by Matthew McConaughey. I’ve got a hard copy but McConaughey’s audio version is awesome!

What is your favorite local Omaha restaurant? - I’ve been on a huge Railcar and Timber Woodfire Bistro kick lately. But I have to throw The Drover at the top of my list.

If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? - jonathan.sinkiewicz@pandopeo.com

EVAN

Meet Evan Soneson, a Mortgage Officer NMLS ID #1851410 at Union Bank & Trust.

Tell us a little about your business. - While I am technically in the business of home ownership, I like to think of myself as in the business of people. A home purchase/financing experience can be one of high stress for the average individual. My first goal with a client is to create an environment of trust, and in order to do so, you need to build a relationship through understanding your clients specific wants and needs. A person’s home is typically their largest asset/purchase in their lifetime, which deserves a thoughtful approach to finding the right products and programs that are right for them. To me, the process isn’t simply a one-time transaction, but rather an on going partnership through life changes.

How did you get started in the business? - My career began at UBT in August of 2011 as a teller, while obtaining my undergraduate degree at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Business Administration. Since then, I have held several positions at UBT leading to my current role as Mortgage Loan Officer. During my tenure with UBT, I was passionate about furthering my education and completed my MBA from Nebraska Wesleyan.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - Those of us in the real estate industry have experienced many challenges over the last few years. Our challenges also relate directly to our clients’ challenges. High interest rates, dramatically increased housing prices and low inventory took a toll on the ability to obtain homeownership. It is my goal to overcome these challenges with every client by understanding what product is best for their situation and educating through the process.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? - I consider my most important achievement to be the same professionally and personally. The vast amount of relationships I have been able to cultivate across the city/state has been something that I am most proud of. For me, it is the most essential part of being a successful professional.

Tell us a little about your family. - My sister and I grew up on the family farm in south-central Nebraska. Our father never thought both of his children would end up in Omaha working in the financial sector, but he’s finally gotten used to it. I’m fortunate to live close to my sister and her family, which includes my niece I am fortunate enough to see often.

What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - Nonprofit organizations I have been/am currently involved with have primarily focused on students. I grew up in a fortunate situation but have learned that not everyone is afforded the same opportunities, which has given me the desire to give back to our community. UBT’s VIP committee focuses on struggling families and the teachers at our assigned schools through various outreach activities throughout the year. I am proud to work for an organization that not only participates in community service, but actively promotes it to their employees. A couple of additional local organizations I have been involved with include the Nebraska Interscholastic Cycling League (NICL), who is dedicated to reinventing youth sports by creating space for everyone to ride from 6th to 12th grade, as well as Bags of Fun who bring joy, laughter and relief to every child fighting a long-term or life-threatening condition. If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so?- I would love to hear from you! (402) 323-1031 | evan.soneson@ubt. com | ubt.com/youneedevan.

How did you get started in the business? - I started as a cook then worked up to be a server. After 10 years, I open my own businesses so I could be my own boss.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?Language; English isn't my first language, Spanish is. I moved to the United States when I was 20, so I didn't go to school here and grow up speaking English.

Another challenge I have faced is learning how to work with everyone because everyone is so different. As Co-Owner and boss it is important to learn how everyone works and learns to make things run smoothly.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? - Having my own restaurant. This is what I have been working towards for the last 10 years.

BLAIR

Blair Kempcke BROOKESTONE MEADOWS

Meet Blair Kempcke, the RN/MDS Coordinator at Brookestone Meadows.

Tell us a little about your business. - At Brookstone Meadows I complete the MDS assessment and resident care plans. Assess and evaluate the quality of care being given to long-term care residents. Direct the care plan meeting with the IDT, resident and their families. Follow the progression of any therapy given and ensure that goals are being met.

How did you get started in the business? - I was kind of got thrown into it; back in 2010 my old facility had a mass exiting of staff and they urgently needed an MDS Coordinator. I jumped in, knowing basically nothing about MDS, and taught myself through long hours of reading the RAI Manual and calling different resources. I fell absolutely in love with it and have been doing it ever since.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - I would say staffing challenges. Even though I mainly complete MDS, being in a management position, we are always faced with helping on the floor and getting pulled from our jobs due to resident care being the number one priority.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? - Becoming RAC certified and ICD 10 certified. Also, ensuring the residents are getting the best quality of care and the facilities are getting reimbursed for what they provide.

Tell us a little about your family. - I have three children; my daughter Kyler who is 12 years old, my son Kayvion who is 17 years old, and my oldest daughter Keyanna who is 24 years old, who also happens to have my adorable grandson, Kasiah, who is 3 years old. I have a very tight knit family and we do everything together, including my kids, my father, my sister and nephew. We love attending the kids sports events and getting outdoors whether that’s is hiking, kayaking, going to concerts and museums, etc.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - Losing my own mother at the very young age of 13 and then becoming a mother at a young age, I was a senior in High school; I was not heading in the right path and knowing I was going to become a mother made me completely change my goals and outlook on life. It helped push and motivate me to finish high school and go to college for a better life for her and I.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Enjoy the outdoorshiking, kayaking, walking in the parks. Also, shopping, going to concerts and museums.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I am a young grandmother at the age of 41 years old, though I prefer to go by “Gigi”.

Who inspires you? - My close group of girlfriends and my sister; they are all independent, successful women who are amazing mothers and care for all humans with open minds.

What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - Friendship Home, for domestic violence. I was a victim of domestic violence myself so I can relate to what they are going through.

What is your favorite local Omaha restaurant? - J. Gilbert’s.

If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? - Bkempcke@vhsmail.com

A Legacy of 90 Years and Counting

Founded in 1934

with just $49 in deposits, seven workers from the Omaha Telephone Company set out to form an extraordinary financial institution that would meet their financial needs. One that cares about its members. One that focuses on the credit union industry mantra, “People Helping People.”

Among those seven workers was Pearl Scheid, a single mother and the only woman in the founders group. She was the first to sign the credit union’s new charter and received Account Number 1.

We opened our doors for business as the Omaha Telephone Employees Federal Credit Union on November 9, 1934. We were the first credit union established in Nebraska and the 28th federally chartered credit union in the United States.

Fast forward

From the beginning, Omaha Telephone Employees Federal Credit Union, later known as Bell Federal Credit Union and today as Centris Federal Credit Union, understood the importance of mutual support and community, laying the foundation for their legacy of dedication and exceptional service. 1968 1980 1996 2019

90 years and that $49 has grown to over $1 billion in assets. The seven original members have become a community of over 135,000, supported by nearly 350 employees and offering services from 15 branches in Nebraska and Iowa.

Through all this remarkable growth, our original mission has never shifted. We’re proud to have been a trusted financial partner for the past 90 years — and we look forward to continuing to serve our community for years to come.

CenterPointe Celebrated National Recovery Month During September

Project Harmony is Being Recognized

Project Harmony is thrilled to announce that they are one of the recipients of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Challenge to Prevent Human Trafficking among Women and Girls! This award recognizes their dedicated efforts and innovative solutions to protect and empower vulnerable women and girls. Together, they are making a difference!

Project Harmony utilizes a child advocacy model where they minimize trauma by co-locating multi-disciplinary community partners such as police, fireman, government agencies and health services at one site, so each child is only required to discuss their experiences once in a supportive environment and receive the appropriate follow up to their needs immediately at the same location. Project Harmony served more than 8,000 children and families across Nebraska last year, 170 of which were missing youth and 109 were youth in trafficking situations.

Project Harmony’s nationally recognized, collaborative, child-focused approach works to ensure children are not further victimized by the systems intended to protect them. Learn more at projectharmony.com.

National Recovery Month, which started in 1989, is a national observance held every September to promote and support new evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, the nation’s strong and proud recovery community and the dedication of service providers and communities who make recovery, in all its forms, possible.

CenterPointe’s Campus for Hope, their residential treatment facility in Omaha, celebrated Recovery Month with their individuals in service with a speaker series, held on Friday afternoons in September, to celebrate each individual’s different journeys to recovery. The goal was to provide hope to CenterPointe’s individuals in service, emphasizing that recovery is possible and no journey looks the same.

CenterPointe staff also celebrated National Recovery Month by participating in themed dress-up days on Mondays throughout the month of September. Themes included:

Tie Dye Day

• Dress in Teal or Purple Day, for suicide prevention or mental health awareness month

• Sports Team Apparel Day

• Dress like Your Favorite Coping Skill/Something That Brings You Joy Day

• Wear Your Favorite Hat Day

CenterPointe has grown to include over forty programs including mental health and substance use treatment, primary care services, rehabilitation, medication management, 24-hour crisis response and housing. Angels Among Us Receives Donation from Nebraska Blue Foundation

Angels Among Us (AAU) was honored to receive a grant through the Nebraska Blue Foundation in August. The foundation, which was founded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) earlier this year, powers the company’s philanthropic initiatives.

The foundation announced its second round of grant funding in August. AAU was one of five nonprofit organizations to receive a $10,000 grant through the foundation in this funding round.

In addition to these gifts, BCBSNE employees had the opportunity to vote to direct an additional $5,000 grant to one of the five nonprofits that received funding through the foundation in August. AAU was selected by BCBSNE’s employees, receiving a $15,000 grant in total.

“We’re proud to support Angels Among Us and their work in uplifting children and families impacted by pediatric cancer,” says Jay Warren-Teamer, executive director of the Nebraska Blue Foundation and diversity, equity and inclusion.

AAU is grateful for this partnership as the organization’s need has continued to grow over recent years. The majority of financial assistance AAU provides is for rent and mortgage payments for pediatric cancer families. In this inflationary time, it is more important than ever for AAU to grow its capacity to meet the needs of families going through a devastating time. This simply could not be done without such partnerships.

AAU is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to provide financial and emotional support to any family whose child is battling pediatric cancer living in or being treated in the state of Nebraska. If you are interested in learning more about AAU’s mission, please contact Aly Goedeken at alyssa@myangelsamongus.org or by calling (402) 934-0999.

Enrichment’s “Vision Beyond Sight” Gala November 8

In the heart of compassion and dedication, Christian Record Services (CRS) stands tall as it celebrates an incredible milestone—125 years of unwavering commitment to serving individuals worldwide who are blind and visually impaired. Since its inception in 1899, CRS has been a beacon of hope, breaking down barriers and providing life-changing services to individuals facing vision challenges.

In September, CRS celebrated their 125th anniversary with a special dinner and ceremony on the campus of Union Adventist University, which is where the ministry was first housed when moving to Nebraska! The event was attended by board members, former staff and many community supporters. In addition, proclamations from Governor Jim Pillen and Mayor Leirion Gaylord Baird were read.

“The organization’s founder, Austin O. Wilson, dreamed of more Christian braille resources for people like himself to learn more about God’s love for them. Reaching this monumental milestone demonstrates how his vision was fulfilled with the expanding services and programs offered through the years. We look forward to continued growth and meaningful service,” stated President Diane Thurber.

As CRS commemorates 125 years of service, it stands as a shining example of love, resilience and the transformative power of dedicated service. Here's to the past, present and future of CRS as it continues to illuminate the path toward a more inclusive, accessible world for the blind and visually impaired community.

Outlook Nebraska associates produce 3.9 million rolls of toilet paper and paper towels each month that are shipped worldwide.

Outlook Nebraska, the sole toilet paper manufacturer in Nebraska, is the largest employer of the blind and visually impaired in the Cornhusker State and a seven-state region. It is an Omaha nonprofit with a global reach.

While Outlook Nebraska produces janitorial products, it makes a difference by creating and sustaining rewarding careers for Americans who are blind or visually impaired. Jennie Edmundson Foundation Announces “Pink-Out” Breast Cancer Awareness Events

Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital's Breast Leadership Team and the Jennie Edmundson Foundation team up again to provide the community with education and awareness in its fight against breast cancer.

For well over a decade, the JE Foundation has been raising awareness and funds to support women in their fight against breast cancer. Since the inception of the Pink-Out Campaign, sisters Caitlin and Erinn Bersford have been very instrumental in the JE Foundation October events. Breast cancer awareness is personal to them as their mother’s only sister lost her battle to breast cancer at a very early age. Caitlin leads the committee work, especially with her most favorite activity, “Pinkercise” at Council Bluffs Jazzercise. This year’s “Pinkercise” will be held on Saturday, October 19, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Mark your calendar for Pink-Out Council Bluffs on Friday, October 11 and Pink-Out Mills County on Thursday, October 23. These areas celebrate by inviting everyone to show their support by wearing PINK. On October 23, the Keith Klan Bingo event will begin at 6:30 p.m. along with a Bra Decorating Contest!

Funds raised from the sale of the ‘Support Squad” 2024 PinkOut T-shirts, and other events during the month, go to support the Breast Cancer Awareness Pink Out Campaign. Find out how you can purchase a Pink-Out T-shirt, help support “Breast Cancer Awareness” or participate in events by contacting the JE Foundation at (712) 396-6040 or visit the website at jehfoundation.org/events/pinkout-sw-iowa.

AmericanRedCrossElevatesFirePreventionWeek

During Fire Prevention Week (October 8-14), the American Red Cross reminds everyone that cooking is the leading cause of home fires and issues safety steps to follow to help avoid blazes.

“Cooking brings family and friends together, but this normal, everyday activity can also lead to disaster,” said Jill Orton, Region Executive of the Nebraska-Iowa Red Cross. “In fact, cooking is the leading cause of home fires in the U.S. To help keep your loved ones safe, it’s important to stay in the kitchen while you’re cooking.”

Follow these 10 steps to help stay safe while cooking:

1. Never leave cooking food unattended.

2. Don’t wear loose clothing or sleeves that dangle while cooking.

3. Check cooking food regularly.

4. Use a timer as a reminder that the stove or oven is on.

5. Keep kids and pets away from the cooking area.

6. Keep anything that can catch fire away from the stove, oven or any other appliance in the kitchen that generates heat.

7. Clean cooking surfaces on a regular basis to prevent grease buildup.

8. Purchase a fire extinguisher to keep in the kitchen.

9. Always check the kitchen before going to bed or leaving the home to make sure all stoves, ovens and small appliances are turned off.

10. Install a smoke alarm near your kitchen, and use the test button to check it each month.

Download the Red Cross First Aid app at redcross.org/apps for quick, expert advice on what to do in case of an emergency.

Since October 2014, the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, working with community partners, has saved at least 1,928 lives by educating families about fire safety, helping them create escape plans and installing free smoke alarms in high-risk areas across the country. At Yellow Brick Road, being a woman-owned business is a source of immense pride. This early childhood development center was built with a vision to nurture not only children but also the dreams of families. From our humble beginnings in a church, we’ve grown into a community that thrives on the same core values that we hold dear: collaboration, communication, innovation, nurturing, positivity, and fun!

Running a woman-owned business in today’s world comes with its unique challenges, but it also opens up opportunities for breaking barriers and setting new standards. We’ve surrounded ourselves with a passionate team of people, many of whom are also mothers, educators, and leaders in their own right. Together, we prioritize a collaborative and inclusive environment where everyone’s voice is heard, and innovation thrives.

Our company’s mission—to put good humans into the world, and leave it better than we found it—bleeds over into the lives of our staff, families, and friends as work to create a daily habit and lifestyle of leaving things better. We champion the balance of career and family, recognizing that nurturing children begins with supporting the adults who love and guide them.

Being a woman business owner means creating spaces where both children and women can flourish, and at Yellow Brick Road, that vision is realized every day.

Since its founding by Abby McLeay in 2017, Zen Coffee Company has been a beloved Omaha coffee shop. Abby has always loved coffee and the fastpaced atmosphere of working in the industry.

She started her undergrad journey in counseling but quickly fell in love with the idea of owning her own business, so she changed her path to an MBA. Luckily for her employees, her initial education has contributed to her relationships with teammates and customers, bringing compassion to her work.

After discovering an amazing roaster in Cannon Beach, Oregon, Abby knew she had to bring the “zen” back to Omaha. “We had a goal to create an inclusive and positive work environment while also merging the traditional specialty type shop with what Omaha has grown to love–all the flavorful concoctions and fancy beverages,” said Abby.

The motivation behind Zen is the people as Zen supports nonprofits continuously within their business model. It prioritizes giving back to the community by working with several local nonprofits monthly. By switching up who it work with, its reach goes far, and more people get exposure to different organizations.

Visit Zen Coffee Company to try its nationally-viral Coffee and Toast flights, over 40 drink options and its full pastry and toast menus. It has two walk-in locations in Omaha, one at 133rd and Center and one at 25th and Farnam, and a drive through is located next to Trader Joes. Zen Coffee Company just recently opened a huge walkin location in Lincoln on 13th and O! Be sure to check out the new location for good vibes and great coffee!
