WITH THE HELP OF
Strøm is doing workshopS and masterclasses for CHILDREN One of Strøm’s main ideals has always been to expose electronic music to as many people as possible. This vision has so far resulted in the presentation of major events in the Copenhagen Metro and Enghaveparken, but this year we begin back to basics when Strøm for the first time ever will present workshops and masterclasses for children. Project coordinator of the Kids project, Simone Øster, explains:
The workshop and masterclass programme is unique for Strøm. What does this part of the programme mean for the festival? Unlike many other festivals, Strøm is not just about drinking and rave. Although we love a good party, Strøm is more about the interest in electronic music and electronic music production. Strøm is nerdy, but not just for nerds. We want everyone to attend - even those who do not know anything about either techno or music software such as Ableton Live. That’s why we have expanded the Strøm School programme to include Rookies and Kids - so everyone can participate.
This year is the first time that Strøm is conducting workshops and masterclasses for children. How is that going to be presented? We have invited 100 children from various after-school clubs in Copenhagen to join our workshops at Rythisk Center. There will be five children at each workshop, each session lasting an hour and a half. During that time, the children will record sounds and their own vocals, and they’re going to try out a lot of instruments. They don’t have to play an instrument to join the work-
shops - on the contrary. They just need to relax and release their inhibitions. Once they have played and sung, they sit together in small groups, each with their MacBook with Ableton Live. Instructors will help them create beats and edit sounds, so they eventually have an almost finished track. When the children have finished the workshop, we will send their track to a producer who remixes it and then posts it on YouTube so everyone has the opportunity to hear what the children have created. We also produce a movie so everyone can get to see how it all goes down!
Why is it important to teach children in electronic music? There isn’t really any electronic music education in schools or in the after school clubs, and we think that’s a shame. The number of hours devoted to music being taught in schools is decreasing, so we try to compensate by offering kids these workshops. With technology advancing everyday, many children have an iPad in hand from birth, so naturally they should also be taught how to produce music electronically.
What is the goal of Strøm School Kids? What do you hope to achieve with the events? We hope that more people become aware of electronic music and music production. It’s the next generation of musicians, dj’s and producers that are going to attend. We hope to inspire them to create at home, or even just arouse their interest in electronic music. It is also about expanding the boundaries a little of what we perceive as music. School children are faced with a system where people are divided into whether you can play an instrument or not. We feel that way of thinking is no longer relevant; in fact it’s obsolete.

SCHOOL ”The goal is to create something persistent” Strøm’s workshop and masterclass programme is a new chapter in the festival’s history, but in its short lifetime it has become one of the most significant parts of Strøm’s programme. This year there will be more focus on this part of the programme, now collectively known as the Strøm School.
programme is intended for those who have already tried making music and perhaps are even experienced musicians or djs. It’s a fantastic opportunity to receive tips and tricks from artists who will performing at Strøm, to get acquainted with new techniques, and become even better at old ones.
Workshops and masterclasses have not been emphasized in Strøm’s programme for over two years, but now it is this element of the programme that really differentiates Strøm from Copenhagen’s other music festivals. ”We do not just throw a big party in Enghaveparken. Strøm is about cultivating, exploring and expanding the Danish electronic music scene,” says Rasmus Kjærbo, project coordinator on the workshop and masterclass programme. “Strøm is more than just a party and this element of the programme is proof of that.”
The Homework programme follows up on last year’s success, pairing young, aspiring musicians and producers with established professionals. For the Homework sessions, five experienced musicians and producers open up their personal music studios to a handful of selected guests who will be offered a unique opportunity to further develop their music and receive advice and coaching from the producers and the other participants.
This year, two years after the workshops and masterclasses were added to the programme, they are united together now as Strøm School, which is divided into four parts, each customized for music lovers at different levels. ”This year we have made an effort to create a more cohesive programme by breaking it down by participant level,” says Rasmus. ”We have our base at the KPH - Københavns Projekthus, where we will hold a series of workshops, seminars and masterclasses - primarily aimed at those who are either beginners or those who have not yet begun producing music in earnest. Here, participants are able to receive education at their own level and meet likeminded producers, dj’s and other interested souls.” After three years experiencing workshops and masterclasses, it became clear that it works best for everyone if the participants are divided into levels based on skill and commitment. That means the event is now separated into the following categories, Rookies, Advanced, Homework and Kids. For beginners, there is the Rookies programme, where the young, the inexperienced, the slightly experienced and those who just want to see what it’s all about can join in at KPH and receive some great information about electronic music and explore the technical and creative process involved. The Advanced

As a novelty in this year’s programme, there will also be something for the youngest participants. For several years Strøm has accommodated the youngest audience with concerts and events such as Min Kat Den Danser Techno and Grønflammeskoven, but this year Strøm School for kids will take this to another level. The objective of the school is to introduce children to an environment where music is created on traditional instruments, but in unconventional ways. It will be playful, but it’s not all just fun and games. The workshops are held in collaboration with professional musicians and producers, and after the creative process is complete, the participating children will have the opportunity to re-experience the music they created during the week, when it is remixed by several Copenhagen producers and posted on YouTube. At Strøm School, children are introduced to a musical environment that they likely haven’t encountered in their everyday lives, and Rasmus hopes that the educational experience will plant seeds that will grow into tomorrow’s electronic musical talent. He has high expectations for the Strøm School Kids programme, but also for the rest of the workshop and masterclass programmes. ”Our focus with Strøm School extends beyond the specific techniques that are taught and the individual artists who teach. I think that because we have focused on electronic music exclusively in it’s various forms; it elevates the entire project to a higher level. The goal is not to make one-off events, but to create something consistent.”

ENGHAVEPARKEN
”People shall dance around with bare wieners and mojito” Enghaveparken is the most iconic part of Strøm, but that has not stopped festival head Frederik Birket-Smith from experimenting with both its form and content. Here 2000F, as he is also known as, explains Enghaveparken’s many new initiatives, the importance of not allowing oneself to lock onto one concept, wading pools, saunas and craziness. Enghaveparken has been a regular part of Strøm since the festival’s birth in 2007, and the concerts in the park are the festival’s highlight in the eyes of many people. Last year was the first year that it cost money to attend to the concerts in Enghaveparken, and along with the entrance fee it was also the first time it was prohibited to bring your own drinks into the park. ”We will continue to have an entrance fee to Enghaveparken, and just like last year it will cost only 20 kroner. The reason that we introduced an entrance fee last year, and continue it again this year is that we want to ramp up the production and be able to offer even more free events throughout the week,” says Frederik. This year, there will once again be changes in Enghaveparken – what was previously two days of concerts in the park will become one. Before this year, there were concerts in the park both Friday and Saturday, but like the entrance fee, the merger of the two days is an attempt to highlight the other events in the festival, and to intensify the musical experience in the park. ”Last year, it became clear that on Friday, there were many people who either came after work or dinner, and then it becomes something of a half experience. This year it will be a much more comprehensive experience that spans all day,” says Frederik about the events in Enghaveparken, which this year begins at 12:00 and ends at midnight. Although Enghaveparken has a special place in the hearts of many people
attending the festival, Frederik nevertheless decided it was time to shake things up, so he re-evaluated the entire Enghaveparken experience. ”The events in the park have in the last five to six years followed one concept, and we have not thought too much about whether it really was the right one. I think it’s a little unhealthy to lock on to a single form and then just be content with it. So, this year we have been inspired by the park’s surroundings and created an enormous amount of new things,” says Frederik. One of the many innovations is an entirely new stage in the park’s herbaceous garden, which has been previously closed to entry. During the day, there will be workshops and masterclasses on the new stage with artists who perform at the park on the other two stages, Grass Stage and Asphalt Stage, and small showcases in collaboration with Kulturanstalten Lyrskovgade. ”It will be a small and intimate stage, where you will learn about music and life,” said Frederik. Although the other two stages are placed where they are usually located, they have also been revamped. At the Grass Stage there will only be concerts in the afternoon and early evening, while concerts at the Asphalt Stage will only be held in the evening. ”In the past, we changed constantly between the two stages and it was really a terrible mess. I think there will be a much more cohesive vibe when you can sit all day and chill at the Grass Stage and then go over to the asphalt area when darkness falls and you want to dance,” says Frederik. However, it is not only the scheduling of the two stages that are different this year. On the Grass Stage, the people from Prags Boulevard 43 will cover the entire area with grass, vines and herbs, so it will look like it is a permanent part of the park. ”I’ve always been a little upset to see those big mobile stages, because they simply do not fit in. We really want them to blend into the park, so this year we made an extra special effort to make the stages

”this year we have been inspired by the park’s surroundings”
compliment the environment they are in,” says Frederik. This means that the Grass Stage is green and lush, and the Asphalt Stage more raw in order to reflect the area it is in. Last year, we inflated Roskilde Festival’s Apollo Stage on the park’s paved area where it filled most of the back end of the park, but this year the stage is being specially constructed so you can see Arne Jacobsen’s beautiful pavilion from 1928. It has never been possible to include the pavilion, but this year the Asphalt Stage will be built as a kind of scaffolding, so the audience will have the opportunity to see the pavilion and get a sense of the history existing in the park. ”Part of what I think can be really boring is when you are at a concert and you’re just looking up at the stage. I don’t think it’s especially fun when you have just one area to focus on. It can’t, of course, be avoided completely, but we have very much tried to activate the area behind and around the stage, and I have no doubt it will be very cool,” says Frederik. However, the most significant changes in the park’s appearance are not the stages, but the area in the middle of the park, which previously had been a small, bare seating area. This year, we will fill the large wading pool with water, and with the help of Prags Boulevard 43 we will roll out a handful of mobile saunas into the park. In addition, there will be showers, outdoor baths and a large Bedouin tent with a cocktail bar, all of which will encourage the audience to linger in the area longer. ”If you have to be in the park for twelve hours, there must be something to see and hear and there must also be something to do. Enghaveparken is cosy, but it’s a little worn out, so it needs a little something extra and that’s what we’re trying to do this year,” says Frederik. He personally looks forward to see the entire park being put to use. ”There has previously been a few limitations with some areas that
we couldn’t use, and some things we could not do, but now we’ve been there so long that the municipality know us,” says Frederik, who hopes that the audience is going to feel more at home in Enghaveparken during Strøm than they did before. ”To be honest, I never really felt at home in Enghaveparken. It’s something we have really worked at developing over the years, and it’s really come together nicely now, so I hope that the audience will also feel that the park has become much more personal and that they feel at home too,” concludes Frederik. concludes Frederik. ”People shall dance around with bare weiners and mojito. And we’ll see you in the sauna!”

RECOMMENDATIONS FROM STRØM's BOOKERS
Pernille Krog Mogensen As leader of the Strøm curator group, Pernille Krog Mogensen has made a strong impact on the Danish underground electronic music scene. She has been a part of the Strøm festival since 2008, and when she is not busy closing bookings for Strøm, she is working as an agent for Magnet Booking in Berlin, Germany. The Haxan Cloak
There is no doubt that this will a very special experience. It’s a booking I’ve personally been working on for months, and I’m convinced it will be well worth the effort involved. You will have to leave the comfort of a Danish summer evening by the grill, and exchange it for a winter-noise-strobe lightinfused eerie environment located deep in the underground dungeons of Søndermarken. Just the way I like it!
Blawan
I’ve seen Blawan perform on several occasions, and he always delivers. His sets are always as hard as nails and uncompromising - he is really an outstanding dj and producer. It is impressive to see how much he has grown in only a few years, and he is an artist I really enjoy watching as he continues evolving from strength to strength. His Label, Sheworks, is mega cool and his latest collaborations with Surgeon and Trade, as well as Karenn with Pariah, are also really amazing.
Sherwood & Pinch
The combination of Adrian Sherwood and dj Pinch is totally unique. Sherwood is one the founding fathers of dub, and Pinch is a new generation producer who has succeeded in elevating the genre to another level - not only in his production work but most definitely also in his dj sets. Pinch is a fusion master who makes the most unlikely elements come together in an amazing way. I’m really looking forward to hearing what these guys will come up with in their team effort, and hopefully Sherwood will have taken his tempo down just a bit. I’m also really excited about attending their master class session, I’ll be ready in the audience with my pen and paper when they start dishing out valuable tips and tricks.
Thomas Knak Thomas has enjoyed one of most impressive and longest running careers in the Danish electronic music scene. As a solo artist, he released the album Objects for an Ideal Home under the name Opiate in 1999. He then went on to produce music for artists such as Bomb The Bass, Alva Noto and Björk. Ametsub og Ital Tek
I can’t wait to sit in the grass of Enghaveparken and listen to two different concerts in the more melodic and indefinable end of the electronica spectrum. First, there is Japanese artist Ametsub, who cut and pasted his way through elements of ambient and jazz to create abstract compositions. And then there is British Ital Tek, who is immersed in the rhythmic split tempo production style which is getting a lot of attention and gaining devotees right now. He melts juke and footwork rhythmic with melodic material and low-end references, which might have been culled from 1970’s era Krautrock, but has been cut and edited to the point where the former long-haired sounds now actually compliment the short-haired UK producer - so to speak…
Sherwood & Pinch
When Sherwood & Pinch take the main stage in the park, it will be two generations of British bass artists meeting to deconstruct the heritage; borrowing heavily from Sherwood’s own reggae productions and his label On-U Sounds back catalogue. And with the modern dubstep techno twist and style of Pinch, these deconstructions will reach back into the past, and end up right back in the moment here in 2013.
Rockwell
When drum’n’bass legend Andy C closed the Enghavepark event with a storming dj set in 2011, he totally out rocked all the live acts and bands with his super contagious energy. My hopes are high that the much younger Rockwell will do the same this year, with an equal amount of energy behind the decks and a tight mix of his own futuristic d’n’b productions, along with new and exclusive tracks.
Linus Ellesøe Linus Ellesøe has been a part of the underground music
party and sound, which hopefully will elevate the Enghavepark temperature to boiling point.
Rockwell
Rockwell’s performance at Roskilde Festival 2012 was completely overlooked, and only seen by a few hundred people. What everybody missed out on was some of the most progressive drum’n’bass I’ve heard in many years. Luckily for us, this year he is back to give Denmark another performance at Strøm and I can’t wait to experience his dj bag of original and awesome bass treats again. He has also agreed to give a masterclass earlier in the day, which I’m equally excited about.
Dj Hvad
He always surprises you – that’s the only thing you can be sure about. DJ Hvad is a true pioneer of music, and remained on the cutting edge ever since I first discovered him, He’s never in the same place musically, he is constantly on the move to the next level, and he totally annihilates the conventional way of which we are used to understanding music. For Strøm he will be ready with a brand new live set - I’m absolutely certain you won’t be standing still.
Åsmund Boye Kverneland Åsmund Boye Kverneland became a dj by
coincidence, when his live gear broke down an hour before a show in 2005, and Danish techno legend Bjorn Svin had to quickly teach him how to spin his way out of trouble. Today he is better know as Copyflex, part of Copenhagen producer collective Yo Fok. As one of the most popular dj’s in the city, he is loved for his combination of genres such as cumbia, tribal, tropic and moombathon, mixed with his own edits and mashups.
Strøms SCHOOL - workshops AND masterclasses
I highly recommend that musicians, djs and anyone else into music culture check out the masterclasses and workshops on the Strøm schedule. You’ll have a unique opportunity to get to explore software and hardware, interact and jam at The Royal Danish Academy of Music, attend lectures and informal interviews with icons and experts, and much more. I’m very proud of the effort that the people involved with the masterclasses and workshops prepare for us every year, and I sincerely hope that as many of you as possible will check out this element of the Strøm festival program.
Buraka Som Sistema
I’m heading off to Brazil one week before Strøm kicks off, and it will be the ultimate experience to return to Denmark and head directly to Pumpehuset to the gig with Buraka. They were amongst the first artists that inspired me to seek out party music from all areas of the world. I mean, if a Portuguese producer could further develop a genre, which started as Angolan carnival music, then certainly I should be able to find exciting party gems in remote areas of the world and do the same. I expect nothing less than an explosion of real ass-shaking music and a very special evening for everyone.
Dj Hvad
I can’t wait to hear the world premiere of his new live set. DJ Hvad has always been a huge inspiration to me. He always pulls more than a few surprises with his live set and I can’t wait to be taken to the next level with him in Enghaveparken this year. He is a very important producer, person, character and composer and it’s a huge honour that he will perform at Strøm on the grass stage this year.
Kristian Kjøller Kristian Kjøller has been a part of Copenhagen
nightlife since 2005, hosting several regular club nights as well as dj’ing at all the hot spots in town. He has been a part of Strøm for two years now, and besides booking for the festival, he is also responsible for booking dj’s for the popular Jolene in the meat-packing district. He is also part of the curator group in the critically acclaimed Click Festival in Helsingør.
Isolée
I really look forward to hearing the German house-maestro Isolée on the asphalt-stage of Enghaveparken. Since 1997, he has excited house heads around the world with his original productions and sounds. I personally can’t wait to hear his classic hit Beau Mot Plage, and also his new raunchy release Allowance. This will undoubtedly be a super delicious concert.
culture of Copenhagen since he was only 13 years old. In his early teens he was spinning hip hop, and when the bass genres emerged, he became part of the dubstep sound system Wobble Squad, Bass Down Low as well as Aersoul. Besides his involvement with Strøm, which Linus has been active with for three years now, he is one of four producers in the producer collective Okay Funky. He is a busy dj and also works as a manager for Musicall Management.
Kasper MarotT
Major Notes feat. Dappa MC
When Saints Go Machine is one of Denmark’s most consistent live acts, so I look forward to hearing what they do when the instruments are swapped for dj gear. Half of WSGM already dj’s as Kenton Slash Demon, but this is the first time I have the opportunity to hear all four members of the group perform as dj’s. I don’t know what to expect, but I’m thinking they will throw a major party and rock all of us all out of our heads.
You’ve probably never heard about these guys before, but not to worry, nobody really has - yet. Major Notes is a relatively small UK act, who successfully combines the well-known British bass sound with elements of afro, house and carnival atmosphere. This mixed up style is somewhat undefined as a genre and is practically unheard of in Denmark. Prepare yourself for a
Kasper Marott is in my opinion one of the most talented new artists in Denmark right now. I’ve heard his live set from the I/O Party several times now, and it seriously has an energy and power I haven’t heard from anyone in a long time. I can’t wait to hear what he will play when he hits the Strøm stage.

The Haxan Cloak With its preserved stalactite deposits, contemporary glass art, 300 year old sandstone sculptures, 10-degrees cold and 17 seconds of reverb, the Cisterns under Søndermarken is undoubtedly the most unique location we have ever included at Strøm. Cisternerne are an old water reservoir, where, in collaboration with the new media art festival Click, we proudly present English producer The Haxan Cloakin in a performance for a maximum of 200 spectators. In the dimly lit space, The Haxan Cloak will perform an intense concert, where the 17-second reverb will project his peculiar witch like drone music back and forth between the stalactites, while the audience shimmy’s and shakes in the Cisternerne humid cold. The concert will be limited to a maximum of one hour, because by the time the performance is finished we’ll certainly need to get some light and air to avoid paranoia. So prepare yourself for this year’s most challenging, provocative and transcendent concert when we go underground on Wednesday August 14th. The concert is presented together with Click Festival and is supported by the Kultur- og Fritidsudvalget at The City of Frederiksberg.

Trans Metro Express Trans Metro Express is one of the established traditions at Strøm, and on Tuesday August 13th we celebrate the fifth anniversary and fill the Copenhagen Metro with electronic music, happy local citizens and probably a few surprised tourists. The four selected artists use the months leading up to the Metro event to compose 25 minutes of music that will add a personalized soundtrack to the excursion through Copenhagen. Like last year, the emphasis is less on rave culture, and more on the musical journey through the city, as the Metro slithers past Ørestad’s concrete and Vanløse’s villas. As a new aspect in our presentation, we have invited an artist from overseas along for the ride, so together with Danish Rewolmer, Jeppe W & Fraktael and Northern Structures, the Japanese Ametsub will join us at Trans Metro Express. Trans Metro Express is presented together with Metro Service and Red Bull Music Academy. Panorama Two years ago, Strøm opened with a special concert, where we illuminated a three-storied building’s facade with an inferno of sound and light. On Monday August 12th, the organizers of that event return to Strøm with a project called Panorama, where Mike Sheridan along with 25 classical musicians from the Det Danske Ungdomsensemble will create a once-in-a-lifetime 360 degree experience at the award winning, six story tall Tietgen Residence Hall. Together, they will perform a concert that merges electronic and classical music, and with the help of lightning designer Jakob Kvist, will transform the residence hall into a vibrant display of sound and light. The light will emanate from more than 250 lamps that are located behind the residence hall’s windows, and the sound will benefit from Martyn Ware, musician and founder of the 1980s band Human League. Ware established a company called Illustrious Company, whose 3D sound system allows the sound to follow the light and musicians. This performance will certainly captivate the audience – definitely not to be missed. Panorama is presented together with Nordea-fonden and Red Bull Music Academy.
