The year 2005 saw a number of major humanitarian disasters. For us in the Strømme Foundation, the tsunami in Asia also left its own unique mark on our work. As a number of our partner organisations were affected, for the first time in several years we initiated an emergency aid operation with the destruction on Sri Lanka as our focus. Our staff, both home and abroad, and our donors and support players, known and unknown, made magnificent efforts to help people who had lost their homes, their family members and their jobs. Through this work, we gave emergency aid, food, medicines and tents to 33,000 people. Since the tsunami, we have continued the important rehabilitation work and helped 7,500 families to rebuild their lives.
2005 var et år preget av flere store humanitære katastrofer. Også for oss i Strømmestiftelsen satte tsunamien i Asia sitt helt spesielle preg på arbeidet. Siden flere av våre partnerorganisasjoner ble rammet, satte vi for første gang på flere år i gang en nødhjelpsopperasjon der ødeleggelsene på Sri Lanka ble vårt fokus. Våre medarbeidere, ute og hjemme, samt våre givere og støttespillere, kjente og ukjente, gjorde en enestående innsats i å hjelpe mennesker som hadde mistet sine hjem, sine familiemedlemmer, og sitt arbeid. Gjennom arbeidet formidlet vi nødhjelp, mat, klær, medisiner og telt til 33 000 personer. Etter tsunamien har vi fortsatt det viktige rehabiliteringsarbeidet og hjulpet 7 500 familier med å komme i gang igjen.
Every single day we in the Strømme Foundation help people by creating hope and giving opportunities. Our motto is to help people get started. Through our two focus areas, microfinance and education; we will create opportunities for people to escape poverty. In Asia, we are for example reaching out to 122,000 families with small loans through microfinance. This means that 600,000 people will receive help through our microfinance work in this region alone. In East Africa, strong growth is taking place within micro finance and in South America and West Africa the scope of micro finance is increasing, but education continues to represent the largest share of our work in these regions.
Hver eneste dag hjelper vi i Strømmestiftelsen mennesker gjennom å skape håp, og gi muligheter. Vårt motto er å hjelpe mennesker i gang. Gjennom våre to fokusområder; mikrofinans og utdanning skal vi skape muligheter til et liv utenfor fattigdom. I Asia når vi for eksempel ut til 122 000 familier med små lån gjennom mikrofinans. Det skulle tilsi at 600 000 mennesker får hjelp gjennom vårt mikrofinansarbeid bare i denne regionen. I Øst-Afrika skjer det en stor vekst i mikrofinans og i Sør Amerika og Vest Afrika øker omfanget av mikrofinans, men fortsatt utgjør utdanning den største andelen av vår virksomhet i disse regionene.
The Strømme Foundation will create change. Our aim is to eradicate poverty and thereby contribute to the UN’s millennium target of halving the number of people in the world who live on less than a dollar a day. Micro finance therefore represents an important part of our work. Education is the Strømme Foundation’s other focus area. During 2005, work was under way to develop our education strategy. It is a strategy which underlines the necessity of improving women’s understanding of their right to take control over their own resources and the right of girls to an education. “A dignified life” is the main tenet in the strategy and will help to steer our work relating to education in the years to come. In West Africa, over 2000 young people were given the chance to return to school. These young people are now receiving further schooling at a higher level after we helped to motivate them to return to school through our programmes. In 2005 work began to raise the profile of the synergy between microfinance and education.

Vårt oppdrag er å utrydde fattigdom og på den måten være med å bidra til at FNs tusenårsmål om å halvere tallet på mennesker i verden som lever for mindre enn en dollar om dagen. Derfor utgjør mikrofinans en vesentlig del av virksomheten vår. Utdanning er Strømmestiftelsens andre fokusområde. I 2005 ble det arbeidet med å videreutvikle vår utdanningsstrategi. Det er en strategi som understreker nødvendigheten av å styrke kvinners forståelse av deres rett til å ta kontroll over egne ressurser, og jenters rett til utdanning. Et verdig liv – er hovedtesen i strategien, og skal være med å styre vårt arbeid med utdanning i årene fremover. I Vest-Afrika fikk for eksempel over 2000 ungdommer sjanse til å begynne på skolen igjen etter at de av ulike grunner hadde sluttet. Nå har disse ungdommene fortsatt skolegangen på høyere klassetrinn etter at vi gjennom vår programmer har bidratt til å motivere dem tilbake til skolebenken. I 2005 ble det satt i gang et arbeid med å synliggjøre synergien mellom mikrofinans og utdanning.
In 2005, the Strømme Foundation further developed its involvement in Integral, an international alliance consisting of Christian development and emergency aid organisations.

We define poverty as lack of basic needs, social exclusion, powerlessness, and vulnerability. Together with partners sharing this mission, we will, with the poor, facilitate their own efforts to cross the poverty line. People living in poverty lack opportunities and self-esteem. We will facilitate change, not only by providing material needs, but also by creating opportunities for people to utilise their talents in a value-based development process. Our approach is a participatory process of change for peoples` empowerment.

Human Dignity We believe that God created mankind in His image. Therefore, all human beings, irrespective of ethnicity, religion, colour, class, sex or ability have the same human value and right to live a life in dignity. We want human dignity to be the core of our interventions.

Transparency Dealing with other people’s money requires openness and honesty. In our communication with partners and stakeholders we strive for full clarity, accountability and open agendas in a common fight against mismanagement and corruption.

Sustainability Our programmes and projects are planned to be sustainable economically, technologically, ecologically, socially and institutionally. We will in all our interventions consider the social context, the market economy, and the availability of local resources.

Core Areas of Activity Micro Finance The focus is on enabling women to embrace business opportunities and social investments. The emphasis is on micro finance outreach. A special concern is to support micro entrepreneurs with special talents.

Education The focus will be on facilitating poor children at risk by strengthening the fostering environment within the local community. Interventions will be within primary education, adult literacy, vocational skills/life skills and awareness building. To strengthen the core areas the Stromme Foundation will also support initiatives within culture, sports, evangelisation, peace and reconciliation work.

Geographical areas Our work is concentrated within four regions: South Asia, East Africa, West Africa and South America. The regions have a nucleus in Bangladesh, Uganda, Mali and Peru respectively.

strategies and experience. Our focus is on long- term development. Our fund-raising sources include private and public sources in the North and in the South. We challenge individual donors, and corporations to provide capital for development work. Through earmarking the donors are able to trace the use of their funds. We will be a professional broker in attracting capital for human resource development.

The name Strømme Foundation is tied to the late Rev. Olav Kr. Strømme, a vicar at the Cathedral in Kristiansand. The Strømme Foundation was established after his death in 1976 as an independent, Christian development organisation, founded on evangelical and ecumenical traditions.
Navnet Strømmestiftelsen er knyttet til innsamlingarbeidet til Res. Kap Olav Kristian Strømme ved Domkirken i Kristiansand. Stiftelsen ble etablert etter hans død som en uavhengig, kristen bistandsorganisasjon grunnlagt på evangeliske og økumeniske tradisjoner.

Mauritiania The flag’s green background and its star and crescent are traditional Muslim symbols.The flag emphasizes its African location, its majority Islamic faith and the name of the nation : Islamic Republic of Mauritania. The colors green and gold are two of the Pan-African colors. The green also represents a bright future and the yellow stands for the Sahara desert.

During 2005 the South American Region of Strømme Foundation continued his fight against poverty of the two southern countries of Peru and Bolivia. This was done together with 12 local partners. We ended up the year with 17 current development projects, out of which 15 were educational and two were micro finance interventions.
I 2005 har Strømmestiftelsen i Sør Amerika fortsatt kampen mot fattigdom gjennom arbeidet vårt i Peru og Bolivia. I regionen har vi et samarbeid med 12 lokale partnere, og ved slutten av året hadde vi til sammen 17 utviklingsprosjekt. 15 av disse var utdanningsprosjekter og to mikrofinanstiltak.
The budget allocated to the region was slightly higher than 1.4 million dollars with which we were able to benefit more than 75,000 people.
Budsjettet for regionen var på litt over 1,4 millioner dollar, og arbeidet vårt omfatter mer enn 75 000 mennesker.
2005 was an exciting year in West Africa. In micro finance Strømme Foundation began a partnership to facilitate the creation of women’s saving and credit groups with two other international NGOs. Within one year, ten thousand women were saving and taking out small loans from the groups. In order to support the women’s groups initiative, the office recruited Mariame Coulibaly, who came to us with 12 years’ experience in managing credit to women’s groups.
2005 var et spennende år i Vest-Afrika. Innen mikrofinans inngikk Strømmestiftelsens partnerskap med to andre internasjonale frivillige organisasjoner for å hjelpe til med etableringen av spare- og kredittgrupper for kvinner. I løpet av ett år var det 10 000 kvinner som sparte penger og tok ut små lån fra disse gruppene. Mariame Coulibaly har i 12 års erfaring i å arbeide med mikrofinans til kvinnegrupper, er ansatt for å lede arbeide med kvinnegruppeprosjektet.
We have a clear commitment towards achieving the millennium development goals (MDGs). Almost 50 per cent of our total resources are dedicated to the educational work among poor children. This is followed by the work done for the benefit of poor communities and in particular of women mostly from the rural Andean areas. Our regional strategy has been renewed and reaffirms the following three core areas which are: Basic education for children at risk; literacy and community education for the poorest and the excluded within our countries; and networking and advocacy for accountable governance, justice and basic rights.

Equally, in formal microfinance West Africa gave out a series of larger institutional loans to partners in Mali and Burkina Faso. In all, the region broke its record for individual loan size four times during the year. Repayment rates are at 100%.
Tilsvarende gav Vest-Afrika flere større institusjonelle mikrofinanslån til partnere i Mali og Burkina Faso. Regionen slo sin egen rekord for individuelle lånebeløp i alt fire ganger i løpet av året. Tilbakebetalingsraten er på 100 prosent.
Strategien for regionen er fornyet og understreker de tre fokusområdene vi arbeider etter som er: Grunnutdanning for risikoutsatte barn, alfabetisering og samfunnsutvikling for de fattigste og ekskluderte, og nettverksbygging med opplæring og fokus på god ledelse, rettferdighet og rettigheter.
In education we saw the first widespread use of an accelerated learning method designed to bring older children back into school and to fourth grade after only eight months of study. In the 2004/5 over five hundred children were able to enrol in higher grades, and in the 2005/6, over 3,000 children are using the method, with 2,000 expected to rejoin school in higher grades. Other organisations are now planning to use these tools to meet the needs of millions of children across West Africa.
Innen utdanning fikk vi i 2005 de første erfaringene med en ny læringsmetode. Denne er laget spesielt for å få eldre barn tilbake på skolen og opp i fjerde klasse etter bare åtte måneders skolegang. I 2004/05 ble mer enn 500 barn skrevet inn på høyere klassetrinn, og i skoleåret 2005/06 er det mer enn 3 000 barn som bruker denne metoden. Det forventes at 2 000 av dem kommer tilbake på høyere klassetrinn. Andre organisasjoner planlegger nå å bruke den samme metoden i sitt arbeid med utdanning.
During 2005 Strømme Foundation South America, nominated one of its Bolivian partners, the Alalay Street Children project for the international annual Marci award scheme organized by the Viva International Network. In September, we rejoiced together with them when informed that they had been granted the award for excellence in the direct care programme category.
I 2005 nominerte Strømmestiftelsen i Sør-Amerika en av sine bolivianske partnere Alalay og deres gatebarn prosjekt, til den årlige internasjonale Marci prisen. Prisen deles ut av Viva International Network. I september kunne vi glede oss sammen med Alalay da det ble klart at de hadde blitt tildelt prisen innenfor kategorien for omsorgsprogram.
Strømme Foundation also began funding the creation of village schools in some of the poorest and least-educated parts of Mali, and of the world. These schools are giving children their first chance to study.
Strømmestiftelsen har også begynt å grunnlegge landsbyskoler i noen av de fattigste og dårligst utdannede områdene av Mali – og i verden forøvrig. For barna blir møtet med disse skolene deres første mulighet til utdanning.
Our Capacity Building orientation was reflected in the organization of two partner meetings where themes related to education and best practices in accountancy were offered. Likewise, representatives of all our partners were invited to participate in the international Resource Mobilization Workshop in Lima – Perú.
Vårt fokus på kapasitetsbygging ble sterkt understreket og ble gjenspeilet i to av våre partnermøter i regionen, der temaer knyttet til utdanning og god regnskapsførsel ble presentert. Tilsvarende ble representanter fra alle våre partnere invitert til Lima for å delta på det internasjonale seminaret om ressursmobilisering.
The regional office began supporting local municipalities through our partners, not just funding the building of new schools, the recruiting of new teachers or the training of existing staff, but also encouraging local people to hold the authorities accountable for how the money was spent and to have a stronger voice in its management.
Regionkontoret arbeider med å støtte lokale kommuner gjennom partnerne våre gjennom å bidra med midler til å bygge nye skoler, rekruttere nye lærere og utdanne eksisterende personell. I tillegg oppmuntres lokalbefolkningen til å holde myndighetene ansvarlig for hvordan pengene brukes og til å engasjere seg sterkere i forvaltningen av disse.
For the second consecutive year the region could welcome the arrival of ten Norwegian youths, who under the Act Now program of “youth exchange” who came to work alongside national teams in the field.
For andre år på rad kunne regionen ønske velkommen ti norske ungdommer som gjennom ungdomsutvekslingen i Act Now programmet, kom for å arbeide ute i felt sammen med ansatte i våre partnerorganisasjoner.
For the first time we began work in Ivory Coast, in areas outside government control and where the school system has been under sever pressure. Thousands of teachers and school committee members were trained and a successful publicity campaign brought thousands of children back to school.
For første gang har vi begynte å arbeide i Elfenbenskysten. Dette er områder utenfor regjeringens kontroll, hvor skolesystemet har vært under alvorlig press. Tusenvis av lærere og skolekomitémedlemmer har fått opplæring, og en vellykket satsing har brakt tusenvis av barn tilbake til skolen.
The year ended with a Capacity Building workshop addressed to the regional staff where we could concentrate on analyzing the quality of our work and evaluating all our processes. We concluded that we have a motivated team with a strong focus on the challenges ahead of micro finance. We praise our Lord for his company and constant inspiration in all our work!
Arbeidsåret ble avsluttet med et seminar der det ble satt fokus på kapasitetsutvikling for regionpersonalet. Der fikk vi alle bruke tid på å konsentrere oss om å analysere kvaliteten på arbeidet vårt og å evaluere prosessene våre. Og vi kunne konkludere med at vi har et motivert team som med sterkt fokus på utfordringene som ligger fremfor oss. Vi priser Herren for Hans nærvær og vedvarende inspirasjon i alt vårt arbeid!
Towards the end of the year we began a recruitment process for a new regional director. After receiving hundreds of applications, we chose Zakariya Abdou, from Niger. Zakariya joins the office with two higher degrees in development, 15 years of experience in development and in church leadership, and above all a passionate commitment to serving the poor. We are very glad to welcome Zakariya and his family to Mali and to Strømme Foundation.
Mot slutten av året startet vi en prosess for å få ny regionaldirektør. Etter å ha mottatt hundrevis av søknader, valgte vi Zakariya Abdou fra Niger. In Eastern Africa, Strømme Foundation aims at poverty reduction through the following: We want to increase opportunities and achieve quality in Community Based Education for self-realisation and active participation in social, cultural and economic development. We will also provide access to funding and technical assistance to Partners focusing on micro finance which targets the poor in rural and urban areas. The Partners provide access to financial services to the poor, to improve their quality of life.
I Øst-Afrika arbeider Strømmestiftelsen med å redusere fattigdom gjennom flere ulike tiltak. Vi vil arbeide for å øke mulighetene til den enkelte gjennom økt kvalitet i utdanningen. Utdanningen vil fokusere på og legge vekt på selvrealisering, og aktiv deltakelse i sosial, kulturell og økonomisk utvikling. Vi vil også sørge for tilgang på midler og teknisk assistanse til samarbeidspartnere med hovedvekt på mikrofinans. Målgruppen er de fattige i distriktene og i byer. Samarbeidsorganisasjonene våre vil legge til rette for finansiell hjelp til fattige slik at de får mulighet til å heve sin og familiens livskvalitet. Strømmestiftelsen i Øst-Afrika arbeider i Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Sudan og Rwanda. Vi støttet også et lite pilotprosjekt på Madagaskar. For å starte opp og utvikle Strømmestiftelsens arbeid nord i Sudan, ble det i 2005 åpnet et avdelingskontor i Khatoum.
One out of five of the world’s inhabitants - 1.2 billion peoplelive in extreme poverty. Their poverty is not only a result of low income or lack of assets. It is a condition of vulnerability, exclusion and powerlessness. It is the erosion of their capability to be free from fear and hunger and to have their voices heard.
Hvert femte innbygger i verden – 1,2 milliarder mennesker – lever i ekstrem fattigdom. Fattigdommen de lever i er ikke bare et resultat av lav inntekt eller mangel på ressurser. Our challenge as a development organization is to facilitate the process of making poor people transform their lives and livelihoods and support governments and civil societies in creating and maintaining the conditions that allow them to do so.
Vår utfordring som en utviklingsorganisasjon er å legge til rette for prosessen som gjør at fattige mennesker kan forandre livene og livsvilkårene sine. Vi må samtidig hjelpe regjeringer og sivile samfunn med å skape og opprettholde forhold som gjør dette mulig.
The Strømme Foundation holistic approach has shown a significant impact on the lives of the poor. Small loans, education opportunities, mobilization and organization have been able to give new impetus to the development process. Poverty reduction is not something governments, development institutions and NGOs can do for the poor. The most striking aspect of Strømme Foundation Asia development policy is to facilitate the people’s empowerment and organize them to fight poverty. As a result of this policy, communities have been able to take over leadership and govern their own development endeavours.
Strømmestiftelsens helhetlige fremgangsmåte har vist seg å ha betydelig innvirkning på livene til de fattige. Små lån, muligheter til utdanning, mobilisering og organisering har gitt ny drivkraft til utviklingsprosessen. Regjeringer, utviklingsorganisasjoner eller frivillige organisasjoner kan i seg selv ikke redusere fattigdommen for de fattige. Det mest fremtredende og viktige med Strømmestiftelsens utviklingsstrategi i Asia, er støtten vi kan gi som gir menneskene styrke og hjelper dem til å slåss mot fattigdommen. Som et resultat av dette ser vi at samfunn er blitt i stand til å overta ledelsen, og å styre sine egne utviklingsmuligheter og aktiviteter.
The year 2005 has been very challenging in Asia as substantial time, energy and resources were spent on relief and rehabilitation in the Post Tsunami Restoration effort. We have been able to reach 33,000 persons through relief and restoration activities and 7,500 families have so far been given opportunities to re-start their livelihoods.
2005 har vært en stor utfordring i Asia. Mye tid, energi og ressurser ble brukt på hjelp og rehabilitering og gjenoppbyggingsarbeidet etter tsunamien. Vi har greid å nå 33 000 mennesker gjennom bistands- og gjenoppbyggingsaktiviteter. Så langt har 7 500 familier fått muligheten til å bygge opp livene sine igjen.
Overall in Asia, Strømme Foundation intervention programmes have been able to reach more than 122,000 families indirectly affecting 600,000 persons through micro finance programmes in the region. Under the education programme more than 10,000 poor children have been given access to primary education and around 73,500 women and adolescents have been reached with the relevant education programmes in order to strengthen their competence in fighting poverty.
Strømmestiftelsens program i Asia har gjennom vår satsing på mikrofinans i regionen totalt greid å nå mer enn 122 000 familier. Indirekte har dette en innvirkning på 600 000 mennesker. Gjennom vår satsing på utdanning har mer enn 10 000 fattige barn fått mulighet til skolegang. Rundt 73 500 kvinner og ungdommer har fått hjelp til utdanning og slik styrket sine evner og muligheter til å ta opp kampen mot fattigdom.

Stromme Foundation in East Africa covers six countries that include; Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Sudan and Rwanda. We also funded a small pilot project in Madagascar. In 2005, for purposes of initiating and developing Strømme Foundation’s interventions in the northern part of Sudan, a sub-office was opened in Khartoum.

Strømme Microfinance East Africa Limited (SMF EA Ltd) completed another year on a better footing. Loan disbursements increased by 53%, to 20 loans equivalent to US$ 2,449,726. We ha a net increase in the micro finance portfolio by 45.3%. Increased Income earned by the Company by 20.9%. Over 25,000 micro finance clients were reached, and micro enterprise interventions were initiated in South Sudan.
Strømme Microfinance East Africa Limited (SMF EA Ltd.) økte sine utbetalinger med 53 prosent, til 20 lån som tilsvarer til sammen 2 449 726 US Dollar. Netto vekst i mikrofinansporteføljen var på 45,3 prosent og vi hadde en netto økning i inntjeningen i Strømme Microfinance East Africa Limited, med 20,9 prosent. I 2005 nådde vi ut til over 25 000 mikrofinanskunder og det ble startet opp mikrofinansvirksomhet i Sør-Sudan.
In the Education intervention a total of 1086 orphans received direct child sponsorship, in terms of education, health care and basic school materials. 301 teachers were trained in short courses and 64 classrooms were renovated, while 25 classrooms were newly constructed. Furniture provision was facilitated, with 1167 desks, 2 office tables and 32 office chairs provided. Primary school enrolment rates among our Partners on average increased by 5%. Eye-care for poor children in Madagascar was supported. 83,855 children and 1,265 teachers were screened. Facilitation (glasses/treatment) was given to 3391 children and to 1847 teachers.

Still there are some challenges. We experienced loss of funds through numerous exchange rate transactions, and we have a few weak micro finance partners. Inadequate funding has also remained a big challenge, with a result of failing to meet partner demands. In Sudan the quality and number of required teachers particularly is still a big challenge.
Men utfordringene finnes også. Vi har noen få svake mikrofinanspartnere, og vi mangler midler til å møte en stor og økende etterspørsel etter mer mikrofinanskapital fra flere av våre partnere. I Sudan er det en utfordring å skaffe nok lærere og sikre kvaliteten på de lærerne vi har.

The Strømme Foundation’s mission in Norway is to bring attention to and create interest in our worldwide work. This knowledge will in the next turn generate income and eradicate poverty. The income is obtained in several ways:
Strømmestiftelsens oppdrag i Norge er å skape oppmerksomhet og interesse for vårt verdensomspennende arbeid. Denne kunnskapen vil i neste omgang generere inntekter og utrydde fattigdom.
Most of our income comes from traditional fundraising through Direct Mail, giro forms in our magazine, and first and foremost by the regular donations of which the sponsorship project Friend at Heart is the biggest.
Inntektene skapes på flere måter og de fleste kommer fra tradisjonell innsamling som Direct mail, giroinnstikk i bladet vårt og først og fremst gjennom fast givertjeneste der fadderproduktet Hjertevenn er desidert størst.
Our second target area is networking - groups of people who commit themselves in their local communities and choose The Strømme Foundation as their channel of aid. Choirs, schools, kindergartens, Christmas concerts, artist collaborations, children’s festivals, our confirmand project SKRIK, collaborations with the Children’s festival in Haugesund and many kindergartens, schools and folk high schools are good examples of this. Now we have introduced the educational programme “Papayafuglen” in all kindergartens in the country.
Det andre området som vi prioriterer er nettverksarbeid: Grupper av mennesker som i sitt nærmiljø engasjerer seg og velger å bruke Strømmestiftelsen som sin kanal for å hjelpe. Kor, skoler, barnehager, julekonserter, artistsamarbeid, barnefestivaler, vårt konfirmantprosjekt SKRIK, samarbeidet med Barnefestivalen i Haugesund og mange barnehager, skoler og folkehøgskoler er gode eksempler på dette. Vi har nå lansert det pedagogiske opplegget ”Papayafuglen” i alle landets barnehager.
Our third priority area is a sustainable collaboration with trade and industry - Strømme Business Partner. We have developed a product which is also interesting commercially and image-wise to the companies: The Strømme Foundation becomes a part of the company value chain. Examples of such companies are ABCenter, Agder Energi, Kjeldsberg Kaffebrenneri, Expert ASA, Nordea and Taran Management.
Vår tredje satsingsområde er et bærekraftig samarbeid med næringslivet – Strømme Business Partner. Vi har utviklet et produkt som også er kommersielt og profilmessig interessant for bedriftene: Strømmestiftelsen blir en del av bedriftens verdikjede. Testamentary donations are also an important source of income. One sentence in the testament might change the lives of many people permanently! Through micro finance we promise to put the money in circulation - again and again!

Despite an increasing competition in the market, the income in Europe Region has increased and the fundraising costs have fallen. With this we are very pleased.

Regarding information and awareness work we believe that art and culture expressions can create the credibility and integrity which are the basis when The Strømme Foundation wants to forward a solidarity message in an overcrowded media reality. The artists and story tellers of our time mediate experiences and knowledge from our collaboration partners in an innovative and special way – as can be done only by art.
Når det gjelder informasjons- og holdningsskapende arbeid tror vi at kunst- og kulturuttrykk kan skape den troverdighet og integritet Strømmestiftelsen ønsker å bygge på for å vinne fram med et solidaritetsbudskap i en overfylt medievirkelighet. The Strømme Foundation has refused income from lotteries and slot machines. We want our supporters to have a close and committed relation to what we really do: Eradicate poverty.
Strømmestiftelsen har sagt nei til lotteri- og automatinntekter. Vi ønsker at våre støttespillere skal ha et nært og engasjert forhold til det vi egentlig holder på med: Utrydder fattigdom.

TYPE OF ACTIVITY The Strømme Foundation supports long term, value based development work and builds on Christian values. We work in close cooperation with local partner organizations in Asia, East- and West-Africa and South America to enable people to cross the poverty line through social and economic development. The Strømme Foundation creates the right conditions for this work through increased understanding, involvement and financial support.
VIRKSOMHETENS ART Strømmestiftelsen støtter langsiktig, verdibasert utviklingsarbeid og bygger på et kristent grunnlag. Vi arbeider i et forpliktende samarbeid med lokale partnerorganisasjoner i regionene Asia, Øst- og Vest-Afrika og Sør-Amerika for å bringe mennesker over fattigdomsgrensen gjennom sosial og økonomisk utvikling. Strømmestiftelsen skaper forutsetninger for dette arbeidet gjennom økt forståelse, engasjement og finansiell støtte.
The Strømme Foundation has two core activities: Microfinance with special emphasis on women in business development, and Education with special emphasis on children at risk and literacy for women. The Strømme Foundation is focusing on the synergy between these two core activities.

Strømme Foundation is acknowledged as a public foundation in Norway, and the head office is located in Kristiansand. We have delegated authority to our regional offices in Lima (Peru), Bamako (Mali), Kampala (Uganda) and Colombo (Sri Lanka) to undertake Strømme Foundations development work in their respective regions.

Myanmar The 14 stars are for 14 states, the cog wheel and rice are for industry and agriculture. Red signifies courage and decisiveness, white signifies purity and virtue and dark blue signifies peace and integrity. A pinion and ears of paddy encircled with fourteen white stars of equal size have been superimposed on the dark blue field of the canton. The center of the pinion coincides with the center of the blue canton. The pinion has fourteen cogs of equal size and within it are two ears of paddy consisting of 34 grains. At the top of each cog of the pinion is a star with five vertices.
Rwanda Green symbolizes hopes of prosperity. Yellow stands for economic development and work. Blue represents peace and happiness. The sun represents light and enlightenment.

Mali The green meaning the hope, the richness of Mali’s soil and everything it can produce for the welfare of the Malians. The golden color shows the gold and other potential mining resources heritage. The red color is an exhortation to fight until the last drop of the blood for the preservation of the integrity of Malian soil, artistic and cultural heritage.
GOING CONCERN ASSUMPTION The Board and Secretary General feel it is correct to present the annual report under the going concern assumption. The organization is in a good economic and financial position with its footing in the Norwegian fundraising market and its good relations with NORAD and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
FORTSATT DRIFT Styret og daglig leder mener det er riktig å legge forutsetningen om fortsatt drift til grunn ved avleggelsen av årsregnskapet. Organisasjonen er i en sunn økonomisk og finansiell stilling med godt feste i det norske innsamlingsmarkedet og i solid posisjon både overfor NORAD og Utenriksdepartementet.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND STAFF Absence due to illness at the head office was approximately 5.77 % (1.97 % in 2004) of the total working time. The organization has a company doctor agreement.

There were no serious accidents at work resulting in material damages or personal injuries during the year.
Det har ikke forekommet alvorlige arbeidsuhell eller ulykker som har resultert i store materielle skader eller personskader i løpet av året.
In 2005 there were 4 women and 3 men in the Board. Among the employees at the head office at the end of the year there were 11 women and 18 men, and 14 women and 38 men worked in the regions. Strømme Foundation strives for a balance of gender at all levels and is conscious about this when employing new staff.
I 2005 var det 4 kvinner og 3 menn i styret. Blant de ansatte tilknyttet hovedkontoret var det ved årets utgang 11 kvinner og 18 menn, og i regionene arbeidet det 14 kvinner og 38 menn. Strømmestiftelsen tilstreber kjønnsbalanse i alle ledd og er bevisst dette ved nyansettelser.
The working environment in the Strømme Foundation is considered to be good. The cooperation with the employee’s unions has been constructive and has contributed positively to the development work.
Arbeidsmiljøet i Strømmestiftelsen betraktes som godt. Samarbeidet med de ansattes organisasjoner har vært konstruktivt og bidratt positivt til utviklingsarbeidet.
The organizations contamination of the external environment will mostly be of an indirect nature. The Board considers this to have minimal contamination effect on the external environment. The organization has no order from the public authorities that has not been complied with.

KEY FIGURES OF THE ACCOUNTS (all amounts in millions of Kroner) The total operating income and net financial income increased from 118.8 mill. in 2004 to 143 mill. in 2005. Private donations and other operating income increased from 59 mill. in 2004 to 64.6 mill. in 2005. We raised 15.1 mill in 2005 in direct connection to the tsunami in Sri Lanka, this includes both private gifts and contributions from other organizations.

Peru Three equal, vertical bands of red, white, and red with the coat of arms centered in the white band. The coat of arms features a shield bearing a vicuna, which represent the animal wealth, cinchona tree (the source of quinine) representing the vegetal wealth, and a yellow cornucopia spilling out gold coins that represents the mineral wealth, all framed by a green wreath. The white of the Peruvian flag represents peace and justice and the red stands for those who lost their lives in the struggle for independence.
Public Sector income increased from 48,8 mill. in 2004 to 52.3 mill. in 2005. Financial support to projects in 2005 totaled 128.5 mill. Strømme Foundations activity level has increased considerably in 2005, most significantly in the rehabilitation work after the tsunami in Sri Lanka and after the floods in Bangladesh, and due to our expanding microfinance activities. The result for the year after change in earmarked capital was a deficit of -6.5 mill. in 2005 against -1.75 mill in 2004. Total equity decreased by 6.5 mill. and total 10.5 mill. at the year end. In addition the acquired microfinance funds increased from 55.6 mill. in 2004 to 82.5 mill. in 2005. Total loan portfolio in microfinance increased from 46.7 mill. in 2004 to 69.2 mill. in 2005. Total liquid funds were reduced from 16.8 mill. in 2004 to 10.6 mill. in 2005 due to the deficit in the year.

CASH FLOW AND LIQUIDITY DEVELOPMENT The cashflow from operational activities differs from the result for the year by 1 mill. There is satisfactory liquidity in the new year.

FINANCIAL RISK Strømme Foundation`s financial risk is first and foremost tied up in currency variations. Our currency strategy is normally not to undertake any currency hedging, as we find this to be most profitable in the long run. Strømme Foundation has economic ability and liquidity to stand the variation in result of this practice.

The organization has no external borrowing, so there will be no serious consequence for the organization if the interest rates should increase considerably. FUTURE PERSPECTIVE The future perspectives are considered to be good both for private and public funding, although Strømme Foundation is constantly looking for new sources of funds. In 2005 we joined the Integral Alliance, a global alliance of similar organizations. Strømme Foundation continues to work with other international organizations. These partnerships improve

NORAD has agreed that Strømme Foundation has disposition rights over repaid loan funds from the microfinance programs. The Strømme Foundation is in dialogue with NORAD about a new agreement for this. The microfinance accounts will not be consolidated with Strømme Foundations ordinary accounts until this agreement has been finalized.

Activity Account / Aktivitetsregnskap Strømme Foundation is a member of The Norwegian Control Committee for Fundraising, and has prepared the Activity account according to guidelines of the NCCF. Strømme Foundations activities have changed considerably over the last few years, and in connection with budgeted work for 2005 we undertook a full review in relation to the Fundraising Committees guidelines. As a result of this, some activities have been reclassified from fundraising or program administration to purpose activities. The costs for 2004 and 2005 can therefore not be directly compared.

The micro finance activities are organised in a separate microfinance department which provides loans via Strømme Foundations Regional Offices to micro finance partners in Asia, West Africa and South America. In East Africa we have established a wholesale lending institution called “Strømme Microfinance East Africa Ltd” through which all microfinance activity in East Africa is channelled. The target for 2005 was to establish the two additional wholesale lending institutions in, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. This procedure was completed for Sri Lanka in January 2006 and is on its way in Bangladesh.
Mikrofinansvirksomheten er organisert i en egen mikrofinansavdeling som forestår utlån via regionkontorene til mikrofinanspartnere i Asia, Vest-Afrika og Sør-Amerika. I Øst-Afrika er det etablert et eget utlånsselskap kalt ’Strømme Microfinance East Africa Ltd’ som står for all mikrofinansaktiviteten i regionen. Målet for 2005 var å etablere to tilsvarende selskap i Sri Lanka og Bangladesh. Denne prosessen ble fullført for Sri Lanka i januar 2006, men pågår fremdeles for Bangladesh.

The loan terms depend on the legal and economic conditions in each country, corresponding to the conditions of the commercial financing market. Most of the loans to microfinance institutions (MFIs) have two year terms with one year interest-only. Interests and instalments are paid quarterly. Rate of interest varies between 8 % and 15 %. All loans are in local currency. This is a development policy. Strømme Foundation takes the exchange rate risk, protecting the borrower.

Valutakursendringene har variert sterkt fra år til år og fra land til land. Normalt påregnes mikrofinansvirksomheten å måtte lide årlige valutatap på 10 % for utlånsporteføljen og bankinnskudd. Mikrofinansregnskapet blir ført i USD, og det er for flere land registrert valutatap mot de ulike utlånsvalutaene. Ved omgjøring av regnskapet til norske kroner som oppstilt ovenfor, blir det imidlertid netto valutagevinst på grunn av styrket krone mot USD med totalt NOK 6,6 mill som tilsvarer ca. 8 % av forvaltningskapitalen pr 31/12-05. Dette inngår i ’Netto omregningsdifferanse’ i tabellen over endring i forvaltningskapitalen.
Regarding loans to MFIs these are subject to a critical valuation of credit. Loans to partners included in the framework agreement have more been of a pedagogical and social character. Factual write-downs in 2005 of MNOK 0,87 amounts to 1.9 % of the loan portfolio at the beginning of the year. Loan loss provisions to cover possible loss, amounts to MNOK 1,6 being 2 % of the end of year loan portfolio of MNOK 69,2.
Når det gjelder lån til MFI’er, er disse gjenstand for en kritisk kredittvurdering. Lån til rammeavtalepartnere har hatt en mer pedagogisk og sosial karakter. Strømme Foundation had MNOK 0,86 in short term debt to the micro finance department at the end of year. This is included in other short term debt in the balance sheet.

Vilkår for utlån er helt avhengig av land og juridiske og økonomiske forhold - tilnærmet betingelsene i det kommersielle finansmarked. De fleste av lånene til mikrofinansinstitusjoner (MFI’er) har to års løpetid med ett års avdragsfritak. For øvrig betales renter og avdrag alltid kvartalsvis. Rentesatsen varierer mellom landene fra 8 til 15 %. Alle utlån skjer i lokal valuta. Dette er et bistandspolitisk valg, og forhindrer at låntaker blir utsatt for valutarisiko. Derimot har Strømmestiftelsen påtatt seg hele valutarisikoen.
Bolivia The Bolivian flag is divided in three equal horizontal bands of red, yellow, and green with the coat of arms centered on the yellow band. Red represents the blood of the heroes, who died to defend the Bolivian territory and its independency. Yellow represents the mineral treasures that the country has. Green represents the vegetal wealth that is spread in the whole Bolivian territory.

Changes in exchange rates have varied strongly from year to year and from country to country. Normally the micro finance activity counts on a yearly 10 % loss due to exchange rates for the loan portfolio and bank deposits. As our loans are denominated in US dollars there were exchange rate losses in a number of areas. However in 2005 the Norwegian kroner performed well against the US dollar and consequently we are showing overall 8% exchange rate gain on our asset base equivalent to 6.6m NOK. This is shown in the table above in Net difference total assets due to exchange rates.

Strømme Foundation is a signatory to the “Code of Conduct” for the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and NGO’s in Disaster Relief. Strømmestiftelsen har undertegnet Røde Kors/Røde halvmåne sitt etiske regelverk “Code of Conduct”, for humanitær bistand.
