Stromsholm is delighted to bring you this guide on the different adhesives on the market and especially on how to use the most popular adhesives found in the farriery industry. This booklet would have not been possible without the help and advice from the manufacturers featured in this ‘let’s get gluing’ guide and especially to Jeff Newman for sharing his technical data with Stromsholm. Many farriers worldwide have never needed to use adhesives, some farriers have tried to use adhesives but without much success, often due to lack of training. But more and more farriers continue to use adhesives and modern materials in their everyday work.
For these farriers, having these products in their toolbox often gives them more options with dealing with problem feet, often they are both easier / quicker options and also more profitable options for their business.
Stromsholm hopes this guide will give farriers a better understanding of the different adhesive families in general and more specific information about the adhesive used in farriery.
We shall also give comprehensive advice on the correct use of these adhesives, to ensure farriers get the best results from day one when using these products. So, Let’s Get GlueingTM.

Let's get gluing The two adhesive families most common in farriery are urethanes for example Vettec and acrylics, for example Pro-Glue.

But before we focus on these products, lets look at the other types of glue on the market and how they work.
Chemically Curing
Chemically curing adhesives are reactive materials that require chemical reaction to convert them from liquid (or thermoplastic) to solid. Once cured, these adhesives generally provide high strength, flexible to rigid bond lines that resist temperature, humidity, and many chemicals. They may be classified into two groups:

They require either high temperature or substances or media (light, humidity) from the surroundings to initiate the curing mechanism. The containers in which this type of adhesive are transported and sorted must be carefully chosen to prevent any undesired reactions.

Phenolic resins cure at 100 – 140c. During the sure, water is liberated from the adhesive. The liberated water is present in gaseous form. To avoid foaming they are cured under pressure. Pure phenolic resins are very brittle and sensitive to peel stress. Additives increase elasticity. Good temperature stability. Resistance to water weathering (boat adhesives) and brake and clutch linings in vehicles.

Cure during the time they are exposed to radiation. One of the substrates must be permeable to the specific wavelengths of light that initiate the cure of the adhesive. The curing process for these adhesive does not merely depend on the wavelength of the light, optimum cure also depends on the dose of radiation used and thickness of the bond line. time until the adhesive can no longer be applied to the substrate or bond strength is decreased due to diminished wetting of the substrate. Formulations are available with a variety of cure speeds providing various working times (worklife) after mixing and rates of strength buildup after bonding. Final strength is reached in minutes to weeks after bonding depending on the formulation. Adhesive must be cleaned from mixing and application equipment before cured Applied by trowel, bead or ribbon, spray, or roller. Use heat to accelerate the cure time. Two component adhesives are typically tough and rigid with good temperature and chemical resistance.

Two component epoxy resin based systems are the most widely used structural adhesives. They can be formulated into fast curing systems with 2 to 5 minute work life that give rigid bond lines which are somewhat brittle. Longer work life systems usually contain additives to provide flexible or tough bond lines. Two component epoxy adhesives are used to bond metal, plastic, fibre reinforced plastic (FRP), glass, and some rubbers.

Let's get gluing Surface Treatment
Youngs Law Contact Anlge Liquid
IMPROVING THE BONDING PROPERTIES OF SUBSTRATES From the foregoing discussion of fundamental bonding mechanisms, it is clear that certain requirements have to be met by the structure of the substrate if a high-quality, strong bond is to be achieved: 1. The substrate surface must have good wetting properties, namely the chosen adhesive should not form beads on the substrate surface but must rather distribute itself (spread) across the surface. 2. The substrate surface must have good bonding properties, namely there must be intermolecular and chemical interactions with the adhesive molecules.
10
3. The surface layer of the substrate must be securely attached to the substrate. Imagine for example highly rusted steel supports that have to be bonded together. If the surface rust layer is not removed, then rust is merely bonded to rust. On subjecting the substrates to loads, the rust breaks away together with the adhesive. In contrast to rust, the oxide layer on aluminium is very strongly attached to the base material and is a good base surface for adhesion.
Solid adhesive film – if the bond is in a moist environment. In order to create a bond having good long-term stability, solely grinding the steel surface is inadequate – and in addition suitable measures must be taken to prevent rusting under the adhesive film when using this steel component in a moist environment. Take home message Surfaces must be clean/ dry / secure. Do not use acetone!
4. After the bonding process, the surface must not change in an uncontrolled way. Ground steel, for example, rusts – even under the

This phenomenon, and the concept of contact angle measurement as a means to describe it, is best defined by Young’s Equation. Dyne, unit of force in the centimetre-gram-second system of physical units, equal to the force that would give a free mass of one gram an acceleration of one centimetre per second per second. One dyne equals 0.00001 newton.
•
•
Surface energy and surface tension are key measurements for the wet-out of adhesives, inks, and coatings. Adhesion is the molecular force of attraction between unlike materials. The strength of attraction is determined by the surface energy of the material. The higher the surface energy, the greater the molecular attraction. The lower the surface energy, the weaker the attractive forces. Modified acrylic and synthetic adhesives with better flow (or "wet-out") characteristics have been developed to adhere to low surface energy substrate
•
•
Greater molecular attraction results in increased contact between an adhesive and substrate. In other words, on a high surface energy material, the adhesive can flow (or "wet-out") to assure a stronger bond. Consider an automobile that has not been waxed for a long time. When water contacts the surface, it spreads in large puddles. The unwaxed car surface exhibits high surface energy - the molecular attraction allows the water to flow. In comparison, water beads up into small spheres on freshly waxed car. It is an example of low surface energy - the liquid (or adhesive) does not flow out. Surface energy is measured by dynes per centimeter. The dyne level is the actual reading of the critical surface tension.

Let's get gluing Adhesive failures
Adhesive testing • Tensile Strength The tensile strength is on the basis of thread connection strength and includes yield strength, rupture strength, and slippage strength. • Shear Pure shear stresses are those which are imposed parallel to the bond and in its plane • Peel tests Peel tests are used to assess bond quality since the predominant stress, as the name suggests, is peel or tension. Thus, they are extremely useful in assessing the effects of process (e.g. surface treatment) or service (environmental exposure) on the strength of the adhesive adherend interface. Peel testing requires at least one flexible adherend. The term ‘flexible’ refers to the ability of the adherend to bend through 90° without breaking or cracking.
12
• Cleavage tests Cleavage stresses (essentially concentrated tensile stresses applied perpendicular to the bond-line) are generally undesirable as adhesive joints have poor resistance to cleavage. Cleavage stresses occur as a result of forces being applied to one end of a rigid bonded assembly to force (or pry) the adherends apart (Petrie, 2007) Tensile Tensile-shear Cleavage (thick sections) Peel (thin sections)

•
Adhesion failure is when glue remains on one of the substrates but not on the other. Causes can be poor cleaning or residue from manufacture i.e. a silicone release agent from injection moulding Cohesion failure is when the adhesive breaks. This can be remedied by increasing the strength of the glue. Substrate failure is when the adhesive is stronger than the substrates Remedied by increasing the strength of the substrate

Equi-Pak – Standard Application 1
This revolutionary soft instant pad material is dispensed onto the frog and sole and gels in 30 seconds. Equi-Pak sticks directly to the sole and will stay in place throughout the normal shoeing cycle. This material protects, supports, and provides comfort to sore footed horses.
30
Equi-Pak is best applied to a freshly prepared sole and frog. Remove only the sole that is due to exfoliate soon. DO NOT over-pare the sole. With all applications make sure the sulcus of the frog is clean and void of any debris. Be certain no anaerobic bacteria is present.

Immediately dispense onto hoof after drying. DO NOT give sole time to rehydrate. Fill Equi-Pak just to shoe level. Used for cushion and protection. Seat out shoe so material can “lock” underneath the shoe.
Ground Level Application Excellent for thin soled horses, horses with low heel angles and those with thin walls. The extra support takes stress off the wall and allows the wall to grow down faster and thicker.

3
If filling with Equi-Pak for full support, use the Adhesive Foam Boards. Place foam board on shoe and let horse bear weight on it for a few seconds to seal it around the shoe.
Insert tip towards toe and back fill to the bulbs. This will seal out any moisture or debris. NOTE: For egg bar shoes, punch a hole in the foam board near apex of frog and fill.
Equi-Pak filled for full support using the Adhesive Foam Boards.
NOTE: If filled to ground level and working on grass use studs or caulks.

Start at one heel and run a bead around the entire ground surface of the hoof. If you have a low spot, you can come back and add before you set the foot down or later on.
4
5
After applying, hold the hoof up for 2 1/2 minutes. Start timing after the material has reached the second heel (not at the start of application). After 2 1/2 minutes try to move the material at the heels & if the bulbs move instead, the material has cured & the foot can be put down.
After application and final set, rasp to shape and balance. NOTE: If the horse will be ridden, it is advisable to add a layer onto the outer wall. This layer bonds the ground layer to the outer wall providing stability.

Super Fast – Foal Extensions 1
Trim the hoof. Any bacteria around the white line is also removed. You do not want to trap any bacteria and it is a weak spot to adhere to.
2
3
Apply ground layer of Super Fast first. For foals 0-30 days old, do not go heel to heel with the material. Hold foot up for about 2 minutes. Apply second layer if needed.
Be careful not to come too far onto sole with the Super Fast. Use a gloved finger to remove any excess or rasp or hoof knife if material is set.
DRY, DRY, DRY - NOTE: That sole is pared out, and all loose structure is being removed. DO NOT over-pare the sole.

To apply the lateral extension, stand foal on plastic, foam board or paper. Apply Super Fast outward and up onto the wall to achieve desired support. Apply layers as needed. DO NOT apply too thick at once as heat on foals may be too much.

Solar view of ground layer and 3 lateral layers applied. Finished Product: Foal was turned out 24/7 in mountain pasture with mare. Stayed on 7 weeks. NOTE: Monitor and adjust as needed.
Foot prep the same as for lateral extension. 1. Apply ground layer first. 2. Add Super Fast to toe to desired length. Rasp toe extension back until heel comes off the ground. If the heel touches the ground you might have too much leverage at the toe.

Adhere – Hoof Repair
This hoof adhesive is used for hoof wall repairs, building heel angles, and gluing on steel, aluminum, and polyurethane shoes. Adhere provides ample working time but is weight bearing in just four to five minutes.

2
Prepare Hoof - Use a knife, nippers, rasp, or Dremel® tool to remove all weak or flaky hoof wall. If hoof has been treated with oily treatments or ointments, use a clean towel dampened with Denatured Alcohol. Use it sparingly as any solvent can leave a film if over applied. NEVER USE ACETONE.
Dry the Hoof - dry the prepared area with a heat gun for 40-60 seconds. Even in dry climates, moisture is released when any hoof structure is removed. NOTE: Repairs can be done with or without a shoe in place. If repairing after the shoe is tacked on, avoid bonding to both hoof and shoe by placing a piece of duct tape on the foot side of the shoe.

First Layer - Immediately after drying, place mix tip against prepared area and dispense a 1/8” to 1/4” layer using small circular motions. Adhere will set hard to the touch in 45-60 seconds. Final cure is approximately 6-8 minutes.
4
5
Second Layer - Use a clean wire brush to remove gloss on first layer and dry repair area again. Apply second layer to overfill beyond prepped area. NOTE: DO NOT “play” with the material, mold, or “feather” it. A minimum thickness of 1/8” is required for best strength, & faster set.
Rasp to Dress - Once heat has dissipated from Adhere, it can be rasped and shaped. For show ring, material can be rasped thin, though best results and longevity are obtained when material is left at least 1/8” thick.

Applying the Cast
Once your glue is applied start wrapping your cast around the hoof. In order to have wider quarters for nailing and not create a longer toe, I normally double back on my casting at the quarter. Do a full wrap every 2-3 turns to hold the cast in place.
10
Remove Heel Section It is important to remove this heel section as it will constrict normal hoof movement. If you have to leave it in, please ensure it is less than 3 layers thick and does not stay full for more than 10 days. If your horse is confined than the full shoeing period is fine.

HOOFCARE& SOUNDNESS
The Answers You Need - Derek Poupard – STROMSHOLM –
HOOFCARE& SOUNDNESS
Why should I cast my horse?
Is it suitable for stabilising a hoof wall crack?
What size should I use, 2" 3" or 4"?
Do I need to prepare the hoof for gluing the cast?
After 35 years of shoeing and gluing horses I have found this to be the most efficient way of protecting and aiding a compromised foot. A shoe can be nailed to a cast very easily as in effect you are creating a thicker wall that absorbs and distributes force. This thicker wall can be nailed to without the risk of close nails.
I have found this to be the moss effective crack repair to date. The video on this site will give you an insight into stabling the crack. The other alternatives of screws, wires and braces can be risky if there is no wall thickness to work with. As long as an interface is placed over the crack itself then there is very little risk involved.
I generally use a 2" cast for wall rebuild on a racehorse with a size 4 - 7 race plate.
I do not recommend stripping the dorsal wall or roughening it to apply a cast as this removes all the natural hoof varnish and will weaken and soften the wall. A light sanding is all it needs, especially at the anchor points at the heels. This way when the cast is ready to be replaced or removed it will come off easier with little damage to the wall. The shape of the cast when applied will hold it in place as well as the small amount of glue needed.
If it's a larger foot or I also want to cover the sole, I would opt for the 3". The 4" is used for very large feet or to apply a clog.
When do you use a full pad cast versus a wall only cast? If I am presented with a bruised foot or suspected corn then I will use a full pad with a medicated osmotic gel. This will protect the foot from further injury and basically float the sole of the hoof within the cast giving it time to heal while still exercising or racing. I use a wall only cast on the hoof wall that in the past I would have applied a glue on shoe. By casting, I am creating a new thick wall that accepts nails with little risk and gives me a good few cycles of shoeing to nail to.

Easy Slipper Shoe – How to guide When applying Easy’s Slipper®, it is important to take into account the environmental factors (e.g. humidity, temperature, etc) for proper glue application and bonding. Please follow the glue manufacturer suggested conditions for optimal application temperatures and conditions. Easy’s Slipper® should ONLY be applied after cleaning and trimming the hooves.
Application instructions 1) M ake sure the hoof wall is clean. Rough up the hoof wall by rasping and sanding. Use 60 grit or rougher sand paper. You may prefer to use your electric buffy. 2) It is CRITICAL to check the moisture in the hoof where the cuff will cover with a moisture meter. If the moisture reading is greater than zero, go around the hoof wall with a mini torch and recheck the moisture reading. Typically, the hoof will reach a moisture reading of zero after two or three passes with the torch. Between passes, use a wire brush to scuff up the hoof wall. 3) At this point, put on latex gloves as the procedure above removed any oils that might have been on the hoof wall. Clean the inside of the slipper with denatured alcohol. (Use acetone if using Equilox glue). Do not use the mini torch on the inside cuff of the slipper. 4) D ry fit the slipper. Visually it is easy to check the appropriate length. To check the width,
54
T: 01908 233909
www.stromsholm.co.uk
move the slipper from left to right. There should be little if any movement. Let your horse walk up and down the shed row prior to preparing for gluing. Lift the hoof. 5) P repare the glue. Most glue has an optimal temperature for use around 72 degrees. Either warm the glue with hot water or cool it with cold water. 6) P URGE THE GLUE prior to putting on a mixing tip. When material comes out of both sides equally (sometimes 3-4 pumps of the gun), you can place the mixing tip on the tube.THIS STEP IS CRITICAL FOR A PROPER BOND.
1
– STROMSHOLM –

– STROMSHOLM –
2
3
4
7) Have an assistant pick up the opposite hoof so that the horse is bearing its weight on the hoof you are gluing. Keep a hoof knife in your hand, while gluing, to pull the slipper away from the hoof wall in case of inadequate glue coverage. Go around the slipper and insert the glue in the pre-drilled holes and begin the gluing process. The dispersion of glue can be seen through the slipper. It is essential to get as close to 100% glue coverage on the cuff as possible. Move quickly as most glues setup within 30 seconds. Change tips often. Use at least two tips per slipper. (After you have mastered gluing you’ll us less!) Have extra tips available in case the glue starts to setup within the mixing nozzle. You will know because it will become harder to dispense the glue. If any part of the glue starts to come out the back of either side of the tube, stop and replace the glue with another tube as the mixing ratio will be changed and the glue bond will be compromised. After the glue has setup, you can place the hoof that was being held back on the ground. Usually within a minute.
HOOFCARE& SOUNDNESS
8) R eplace the mixing nozzle and repeat the process on the other hoof. 9) Use a hoof knife and rasp to dress the slipper by removing any excess material. 10) W e recommend filling in under the back bar to prevent debris from collecting under the heal bulbs. HOOF LIFE may be used under the bar for open bottom and heart bar slippers. Regardless of which style of slipper you are using we recommend putting Artimud in the frog grooves to prevent any thrush.
