Liberty E-Slim

Combo nails are a modification of the City or Slim nail. The heads are slightly larger but yet the shank is still similar to the City or Slim. They are often used for resetting when nail holes have enlarged or with shoes that have a wide crease.

E-Slim are European style nails. These fit well in shoes like the Kerckhaert DF and SSP series that were made first for the European market. Used most often in the Hunter and Jumper discipline. Some farriers prefer to punch their hand made shoes for E-heads because of the symmetrical nature of the nail. There is also a feeling that an E-head nail has more strength because the shank comes out of the centre of the head, with slightly more mass.

The Steel Kings Extra Sound design gives a front shoe with a wide section for cover and support. The bevelled heel design gives the farrier the option to fit the shoe safely while giving width and support.

The Kerckhaert shape is as always quick and easy to fit. The radius clip – with rounded edges – reduces the amount of hoof wall that needs to be removed while fitting. The nail holes are not only punched in the optimum position, but also have the correct pitch and coarseness.

Kings Extra Sound Plus

The Kerckhaert Steel Kings Extra Sound Plus front shoe is great in combination. The same section offers improved grip. The heels are more upright & have a wider bearing surface giving the hoof more support.

This shoe gives you the great shape of the Steel Kings ES which fits perfectly to the foot with minimum shaping, but also offers a thicker section. This thicker section gives improved

wear and strength, making it ideal for use with polo horses which require a concave shoe for grip, but also a lighter shoe for better performance.

A wider, more upright heel on the front shoe allows you to fit the shoe with better cover and support. Strong radius clips reduces the risk of spreading a shoe and are easy to fit into the hoof wall with minimum amount of wall being removed.

Comfort Sport

Comfort Sport Horseshoe has a slightly thicker and wider heel than the original Steel Comfort. It features a rolled toe and branches, built in sole relief and a V-crease that provides a more secure nail fit to hold shoes better.

The Shoe is already marked to drill for traction devices in the heel area with fully boxed and safed heels. It provides good breakover, a bevelled inside web that promotes cleanout and clips between the second and third nail holes. It is punched for E-head, Hybrid and 5 Combo nails; offers a five-nail pattern for extra nailing options and is available in sizes 0-2; front pattern.

Research study

into the effects of horseshoe nails made with Copper Shield TechnologyTM

An independent study is looking at the health of equine hoof material following the use of Liberty Cu nails with Copper Shield Technology. The study is being carried out in Edinburgh UK, by Dr Sue Kempson

BSc PhD at The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies with Stephen Mitchell

BSc MSc at the School of Biological Sciences. The full results of the study are expected later this year.

EDINBURGH STUDY

The research is focusing on the presence of bacteria in hoof trimming samples taken from the front feet of 8 horses shod by different farriers across the UK in a 7 month study. One of the front feet was shod using Liberty Cu nails and the other with standard steel nails for comparison.

The study was initiated by Carl Bettison AWCF Hons and independently lead by Dr Sue Kempson BSc PhD at The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, Edinburgh, UK, with Stephen Mitchell BSc MSc at the School of Biological Sciences.

The samples are being subjected to both transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. Interim and final results are expected later this year.

The Egg Bar Front Shoe Side Clipped is an oval shaped shoe and is usually used on horses with pre-navicular and navicular disease. The frog is not supported, as the bar extends behind it, which can be a problem when used with very flat feet, as the frog will “drop through” because it is unsupported.

They are very useful for horses that ‘Brush’ as its works by widening the horse’s gait during locomotion. It can also be used as a support shoe and in the treatment of bone spavin. Horses with bone spavin attempt to unload the dorsal (front) aspect of the small tarsal joints by redistributing their weight.

The three degree wedge bar, Graduated Frog Support Front Shoe Side Clipped Horseshoe by Jim Blurton has been designed to assist in the realignment of the HPA. This shoe has a set down bar which makes it easy to fit on a foot with a prominent frog.

Shoeing

with Öllöv – a few points to know:

Shoeing with Öllöv is done the same way as any steel shoe, but due to the wide design and the rubber around edges, it may take some sets to get used to, and gets easier and quicker with every shoe. At first glance, the nail holes in an Öllöv horseshoe appear to be very big.

This is because the holes in the Öllöv shoe are stamped and the cross-section of the hole is straight. The nail must lock firmly against the steel insert. The shoes have a 6mm steel core + 9mm rubber outer.

• A good choice of nails is E-Slim type, REG – type RN – type for thin hoof walls.

• VERY IMPORTANT! Deepen the nails well through the rubber so the nailhead comes down into the steel. For example, use a clinch cutter or simply a bolt.

• The rubber on the sides can be grinded off to get steel feeling when shaping.

• Make sure nails stay deepened when clinching. (Öllöv clincher available for smooth clinching but not necessary)

• Most farriers remove rubber off the inside of the rear side clips for a much tighter fit.

• You can carefully weld-on inserts if needed for a speciality shoe.

• If desired (often not needed) you can still add pads inside.

• To shape the shoe, use a forging hammer of around 800g – 1kg.

Farrier info:

These rubber shoes have a steel core and can be shaped and processed almost like a regular steel shoe. Due to the rubber on the side, they respond a little differently than a steel shoe but only takes some getting used to.

To flatten the shoe:

Because of the rubber, the shoes must be worked on both the hoof side and the ground side. After shaping the shoe, the rubber on the sides may have cracks and look damaged. This however does not mean the shoe will break or the rubber will come off. It only has an aesthetic impact. The rubber is very durable and can even be removed on the sides.

Nail types:

The nail holes are intentionally made longer and the way they lock the nail is different from regular steel shoes. It also allows you to use different angles when placing your nails to avoid damaged hoof areas. Many types of nails will work well.

If you are unsure what nail type to use, we recommend Liberty E-head nails.

To countersink the nails: Please make sure to countersink the nail into the steel. This can be done using a clinch gauge, the pritchel of a clinch cutter or a simply a bolt of the right size.

To clinch:

When you clinch the nails using your clencher, you will not be able to support the nail head like you are used to. Please be careful to reach the countersunk nail and support it while clenching. A modified clencher with a pin makes this easier but can be done with a regular clencher finding the right angle.

Snow pads are typically not needed in these shoes as the snow does not usually stick to the rubber.

Please note that some horses may stumble a little on the first few days but very quickly get used to the new feel.

Easy's Slipper performance

Easy’s Slipper has developed the new Performance shoe as a natural evolution based upon research and comments from Veterinarians, Farriers, and horse owners.

The key features are:

Changes to the thickness of material in key places to reduce leverage and provide more flexibility for ease of installation and to provide additional support for horses with less than well connected growth at the toe.

The back bar was also increased in size to provide additional support to the heel. All surface edges that come in connect with the sole have been bevelled to reduce the possibility of a pressure point.

Spacers or vertical ribs were added to the inside of the cuff to provide space for equal dispersion of glue. The spacers or ribs also will keep any crack in the glue from spreading beyond the next spacer.

Markings were made on the rear of the cuff so that the cuff could be cut if the shoe was too tight in the heels.

Equine Biosecurity Awareness

When equine flu hit the UK, Stromsholm together with the Horse Trust acted quickly, to give practical advice and help to farriers across the country to deal with the infectious disease.

Together, we produce a short demo video, with Dan Harman AWCF. Dan demonstrated best practice to avoid spreading disease while shoeing horses.

Later that year at Farriers Focus, together we gave out 800 biosecurity packs. The pack contained van sticker, gloves and biosecurity warning signs which can be fixed to wooden gate posts on the entrance to stables, yards, forges and veterinary clinics.

Equine Influenza (‘FLU’)

What is it and what are the clinical signs?

Equine flu is an infectious disease which affects the upper respiratory tract of horses. There have been many outbreaks in the UK in 2019 & horseracing was halted in response to flu in February. The highest number of flu cases have been reported in June/July and they are still happening.

Clinical signs usually appear within 1–5 days of exposure to the flu virus and they can last for 3–6 weeks. Signs can include a high temperature, cough, nasal discharge, enlarged glands (under the lower jaw), conjunctivitis, lethargy, loss of appetite and filling of the lower limbs.

How is it spread?

Like human flu, equine flu is very contagious. It spreads rapidly with the virus being released into the atmosphere as droplets by infected animals coughing. The virus can spread over longer distances than some other diseases, so any infected animal needs to be isolated by 100m to distance to reduce the risk of airborne spread.

The flu virus can also live on surfaces, objects, tools and peoples’ clothing. Cleaning or disinfecting your equipment, washing or disinfecting your hands and changing clothing between yards can help to manage the risk of spread.

What do I do if I think there may be flu on one of my yards?

Notify the yard manager straight away if you have any concerns (any of the clinical signs above and suggest that they call their vet. A special Equine Influenza Surveillance Programme at the Animal Health Trust (AHT) provides a laboratory testing service allowing all vets to send in swabs taken from horses with suspected flu and confirm not only if flu is present, but also which strain is responsible. It is crucial that yards follow the advice of vets to minimise the risks associated with this virus.

Vaccination

Vaccination is crucial for flu. The disease is often introduced on to a premises by a non vaccinated horse. Horses should be vaccinated (complete primary course) and

receive a booster at least annually. At the moment, twice yearly is recommended to offer the best protection. If over 70% of the country’s horses were vaccinated, flu would not be able to get a foothold because of a process called “herd immunity” and this is why it is very important that ALL horses are vaccinated, whether or not they go anywhere. Current vaccines are effective, despite what you may hear to the contrary.

At the moment only 40% of the UK’s horses are vaccinated, are your clients included in this number? Make sure that neither they nor you, are contributing to the spread of this disease.

Strangles (streptococcus equi)

What’s strangles and what are the signs?

Strangles is a bacterial infection affecting a horse’s respiratory system. Early signs are usually fever, dullness and loss of appetite; followed by nasal discharge, swollen glands and abscesses around the head. Fever generally develops before a horse becomes infectious.

It can take up to 21 days for a horse to show symptoms. Some horses only develop mild signs of disease, but are still infectious. Although strangles is not often fatal, it can cause serious suffering to the horse and heartache for owners and businesses affected by an outbreak.

Some horses become strangles carriers if they are not checked by a vet shortly after infection, and treated if necessary. Carriers appear healthy but can shed bacteria at any time. Strangles can be stopped in its tracks if we use routine testing and hygiene procedures. The good news is this is becoming more common across the industry.

How does strangles spread?

Strangles is not airborne, but can spread fast. Horses may become ill after contact with an infected horse, or indirect contact with contaminated surfaces, equipment, tack, water tanks, or human hands, clothes & shoes.

Strangles can survive in the environment, but its longevity depends on factors such as temperature and moisture. Bacteria have been found in water tanks 30 days after being contaminated, whereas it can be killed in as little as two days by direct sunlight.

What do I do if I think strangles may be on one of my yards?

Notify your client straight away if you have concerns about infectious disease and advise them to contact their vet.

Remember healthy-looking horses on the yard may also be infectious, so take precautions to protect yourself and your other clients. If you are on site, thoroughly disinfect any equipment you have used there with a product that is known to kill strangles (eg: Safe-4, Virkon, Steri-7). Change outer clothing, disinfect boots and

thoroughly wash and disinfect hands. If possible, disinfect vehicle tyres.

You may prefer to postpone routine visits to a yard with strangles, or schedule a visit at the end of the day to allow for thorough disinfection before setting out again the next day.

AGMA DIS-IN-FECT

DEFRA approved and validated to effective against Foot and Mouth, Swine Vesicular Disease, Avian Influenza, bacteria, mycobacteria, spores and fungi. DIS-IN-FECT is DEFRA approved for general orders at a dilution rate of 1 DIS-IN-FECT tablet to 1.7 litres of water or 3 tablets in 5 litres.

Preventing strangles

There are no guarantees, but good biosecurity can drastically reduce the risk to horses and yards.

• Encourage yards to screen new horses for strangles. Ideally a horse should spend three weeks in quarantine on arrival & be tested to ensure they are not a strangles carrier.

• Use and promote good hygiene practices such as handwashing between handling different horses, then disinfecting equipment and disinfecting or changing clothes and boots between yards.

• Everyone should be alert to signs of disease and act as soon as it is suspected. If it looks like strangles, assume it is until you know otherwise! Regular temperature
