Local Leadership Conference

Representatives from 27 local SEI groups (Chapters, Structural Technical Groups and Graduate Student Chapters) participated in the 2013 SEI Local Leadership Conference (LLC) September 11-12 in Dallas, co-located with the ASCE Texas Centennial Conference. Th e participants held a lively exchange on local chapter best practices, learned more about SEI/ASCE programs, and enjoyed networking with the Local Activities Executive Committee and members of the SEI Board of Governors. In addition to the general session meeting, the conference included a technical tour of the AT&T Dallas Cowboys Stadium, a joint dinner with the SEI Board of Governors, a technical presentation on the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, and leadership training by ASCE’s Jim O’Brien.

Join your local SEI Chapter or Structural Technical Groups (STG) to connect with colleagues, take advantage of local opportunities for lifelong learning, and advance structural engineering in your area. If there is not an SEI Chapter or STG in your area, talk with your ASCE Section/Branch leaders about the simple steps to form an SEI Chapter. Advance To SEI Fellow Grade

Th e SEI Fellow grade of membership recognizes accomplished SEI members as leaders and mentors in the structural engineering profession. Th e benefi ts of becoming an SEI Fellow include recognition via SEI communications and at the annual Structures Congress along with a distinctive SEI Fellow wall plaque and pin, and use of the F.SEI designation. SEI members who meet the SEI Fellow criteria are encouraged to submit application submit application packages online by December 1 to advance to the SEI Fellow grade of membership and be recognized at Structures Congress, April 3–5, 2014 in Boston. SEI Board of Governors Welcomes Newly Elected Board Members

Congratulations to Andrew W. Herrmann, P.E., SECB, F.SEI, F. ASCE, representing the SEI Technical Activities Division, and Cheng Lok Caleb Hing, Ph.D., P.E., F.SEI, F. ASCE, representing the SEI Local Activities Division, on their election to the SEI Board of Governors. Each will serve a four year term beginning October 1, 2013. Mr. Herrmann is Principal at Hardesty & Hanover in New York City. He has served on the SEI Technical Activities Division Executive Committee, as Chair of the Technical Administrative Committee on Bridges, and Co-Chair of the 2005 SEI Structures Congress in New York City. For ASCE, he served as President in 2012, President of the New York City Metropolitan Section, and Director of Region 1. He also served on the Advisory Council for the 2003 and 2005 Report Cards for America’s Infrastructure and chaired the Council for the 2009 Report Card. Dr. Hing is a Senior Structural Engineer and Project Engineer with Michael Baker Jr., Inc., in Arlington, Texas and serves as Adjunct Faculty for the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). He serves on the SEI Local Activities Division Executive Committee as liaison to SEI Graduate Student Chapters, chairs the SEI Public Relations Committee, and serves on other SEI committees including Membership, Digital Media, the Structures Congress National Technical Program Committee, and the Business and Professional Activities Division Executive Committee. He also serves as ASCE Texas Section Centennial Technical Program Committee Chair and is Past President of the SEI Fort Worth Chapter. Th ese SEI Board members will serve as FY2014 SEI Board Offi cers: • President: Don Dusenberry, P.E., F.SEI, F. ASCE • Vice President: Pat McCormick, P.E., F.SEI, M. ASCE • Treasurer: Ed DePaola, P.E., F.SEI, M. ASCE Th e SEI Board of Governors would also like to recognize Roberto Leon, Ph.D., P.E., F.SEI, F. ASCE for his service as Past President and representing the Technical Activities Division, and Taka Kimura, P.E., F.SEI, M. ASCE, for his service as Vice President and representing the Local Activities Division. Th eir terms conclude September 30, 2013. Structures Congress Scholarship Opportunity For Younger Members

Participate in the 2014 SEI Student Structural Design Competition

Innovative projects demonstrating excellence in structural engineering are invited for submission. Awards include an opportunity to present finalist designs at the Structures Congress 2014 in Boston, MA, April 3 – 5, 2014, cash prizes, and complimentary registration for Structures Congress (up to three student registrations and one full registration for the faculty advisor). Apply to Join the FRP Products in Overhead Utilities Line Structures Committee

Do you have composite product related knowledge and/or experience and are looking make a valuable contribution to educate those interested on how to better understand and apply FRP products in grid infrastructure applications? If so, then you are invited to apply for membership in the new FRP Task Committee on the Recommended Practice of FRP Products in Overhead Utility Line Structures which will carry on and complete the work of the previous FRP committee. The previous task committee brought the document to near 90% completion. As such, it is expected that your required time involvement will be minimal compared to starting a new document, with your participation generally focused on minor updating and subsequent review with at least one meeting.
