STORIES Sigma members are nurse leaders, connected and determined to transform global healthcare. But the path you took to get here, and the path you’ll continue on—that’s different for everyone. Nursing Centered wants to share your story with the world. Follow your nursing dreams By Farah Laurent, MSN, CPXP, NEA-BC, NPD-BC, TCRN, CPEN, CEN The message I want to spread to all nurses out there is to dream bigger, pursue your goals, and don’t let anyone diminish your flame. Let’s put a stop to settling for jobs that you do not want— you will not feel fulfilled, driven, or happy. Do not worry if you are told by one recruiter that you need a year of experience before applying for a certain job. Continue to search and work toward your goals; it just takes one recruiter or hiring manager to say yes and give you the chance that you deserve.

NE W MEMBER’S GUIDE
Preparing for the Next Generation NCLEX By Renee Carter, BSN, RN Becoming a novice nurse is a big deal, and you are on your way to a new career. Don’t let the NGN stress you out. The evidence-based nursing concepts you have learned in your nursing program don’t change as much as you think. What do I mean by that? Standards of care are established for all healthcare professionals to create safe expected outcomes for patients. For example, you have learned that hand washing will always be the number one prevention method for the spread of infection. The NGN wants to know if you can recognize the same nursing concepts and apply them to various scenarios.
You know what you are capable of By Amalia Misir, DNP, MSN-Ed, RN I started my career as a patient care technician and transitioned to a registered nurse role on a surgical oncology unit, where I worked for over three years. I quickly moved to a critical care unit to expand my knowledge and skills and to become more marketable. Even with these accomplishments, I wanted to further develop myself in healthcare. I still recall a supervisor saying, “The grass is not always greener on the other side.” But what does that really mean? You must take risks to develop yourself. I have worked in three well-known organizations, and I have learned something different from each one. I was not scared to take risks. To me, the grass represented how well I could adapt to different environments.
SHARE YOUR STORY! Do you have a great idea for a Nursing Centered story or an extraordinary achievement to share? Is your chapter doing something impactful in the community? Share your story with us by completing the form on the Nursing Centered website. We love highlighting our empowering nurse leaders and inspiring chapters!

TELL ME MORE! It’s always the first, right? The one that you remember most. And there is so much to learn from these initial experiences. A Nurse First is a podcast about these firsts—stories from nurses who have been there, done that, and have lived to tell the tale, so to speak. It explores the world of nursing from all sorts of unexpected angles, sweeping you along in stories and giving you pause to think, “What would I do if it were me?” From the good to bad and everything in between, there is something to learn from every first. We hope you’ll learn something, too!
FINDING STRENGTH AND MOVING FORWARD Over the past few years, nurses and midwives around the world have shown strength in the face of adversity to help educate future nurses and provide the best patient care. To help navigate the path forward, Sigma developed resources (microlearning videos, handouts, and podcast episodes) for nurses to support themselves and provide ways to work with others to advocate for change within healthcare systems.
