Changing the Landscape A LETTER FROM YOUR CAMPAIGN CHAIRS Dear Friends of Stuart Hall, Sitting in my classroom as a senior at Stuart Hall in 1967, I could not have imagined the world as we know it in the 21st century. Today, many of the sentiments we see young people expressing echo the momentum and emotionally-charged atmosphere of the 60s. There exists in the hearts and minds of our next generation a sense of rapid cultural movement that we also felt at their age. Our lives at Stuart Hall in that era, however, were cloistered. We received an outstanding, but traditional, liberal arts education within the walls of our historic campus, and we had strict rules about stepping out with a friend, walking downtown, and engaging with the world around us. The young leaders of today carry the world in the palm of their hands. They speak a native language of technology and devices that our generation learned as foreign citizens. The changes and challenges facing them are unimaginable, just as tablets and cloud technology were unimaginable to my 17-year-old self, studying in my dorm room in Cochran House. Our youngest students do not have the option to be sheltered. The world is coming to them in pixels and images at a rate that is changing the landscape of youth itself. As a member of the Board of Governors, it is my duty and pleasure to serve a school whose strategic vision and mission is to prepare students to face this rapidly advancing phase of our human history. Our downtown “Staunton is our Campus” initiative with an innovative Authentic Learning curriculum will usher Stuart Hall into a new era. I hope you will join David and me in making this vision a reality for the 300 students we currently serve, and the countless others who will benefit from this unique program, both as day and boarding students. Forward Ever, The Campaign for Stuart Hall School will help to secure our beloved school’s future and will carry us through a monumental period of change and development. Your partnership will make the difference to this important next step, and I look forward to working with you to realize the achievements of this incredible school. Sincerely,
CATHY PARKS LOEVNER ‘67 AND DAVID LOEVNER

Changing Education for a Changing World…
A
generation ago, the phones we carry in our pockets were the stuff of science fiction. The way people interacted in the workplace is unrecognizable in today’s office settings. Technology has changed us all, and education must change as well.
As a 2017 Gallup study notes, “The changes that are affecting organizations today are coming fast and furious. They are overlapping and colliding in ways they haven’t before. They are historic and monumental.” At Stuart Hall, we are committed to creating successful young people who are ready for higher education and a rapidly changing social and economic landscape. Therefore, we must create flexible, adaptable thinkers who are ready for any direction the world may take them.
A TRADITIONAL, LIBERAL ARTS CURRICULUM ALONE WILL NOT MEET THE NEEDS OF FUTURE STUDENTS.
The Way Forward: Our Program KEY PROFICIENCIES Our skills-based program creates a graduate who is:
HONORABLE and ethical
GLOBAL citizen
CRITICAL EFFECTIVE CREATIVE communicator innovator thinker
EFFECTIVE collaborator
Driven by these proficiencies, our Authentic Learning curriculum creates experiences that deepen learning outcomes.

Authentic Learning
A
uthentic Learning is an inquiry-based approach to education in which students solve realworld problems, emulating the work of professionals by creating a product or presentation of findings that reaches beyond the classroom. Students engage in discourse, collaborate in teams, and direct their own learning with a teacher as facilitator. They learn skills and pertinent content—traditionally taught through a textbook—as a means to an end, not as an end in itself. Our students are already engaging in an authentic learning curriculum, whether by managing our campus compost as part of service learning in 4th grade, or working with the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library to mine and analyze data as part of an Advanced Math class. Our vision requires innovative learning spaces that will maximize the potential of this unique program.

MARK H. EASTHAM, Head of School
Stuart Hall 107 West Beverley In the spring of 2017, with the unanimous support of the Board of Governors, Stuart Hall acquired 107 West Beverley street, a 26,000-square-foot building in the heart of downtown Staunton, just over a block from our historic campus. Designed by renowned Staunton architect T. J. Collins and built in 1894 to serve as a hotel, the building has served many functions in the community throughout its history. The building provides an open canvas to proceed with our vision and will ultimately serve as a downtown “hub” of activity and coursework for grades 9-12.
HAVING A DOWNTOWN LOCATION WILL: • Create more collaborative opportunities with organizations in Staunton • Increase our level of safety as we explore an authentic learning curriculum, with students closer to our partners in town • Provide additional academic, social, and dining spaces for our growing community
