celebrate STU MARK EASTHAM HEAD OF SCHOOL The 2013-14 academic year was full of many positive, exciting changes that position our School for continued success well into the future.

Dear Stuart Hall Family and Friends, We have much to celebrate at Stuart Hall School. The 2013-14 academic year was full of many positive, exciting changes that position our School for continued success well into the future. From the strategic hiring of new staff members to the historic decision to admit boys to our boarding program, Stuart Hall continues to grow and evolve to fulfill our educational mission. People are the backbone of our institution. To remain healthy, we must continue to attract qualified students to fill our classrooms,

2

gifted educators to teach and lead, and experienced professionals to administer the School. In the span of a single year, a new staffing model has enabled the School to increase enrollment, become more selective, increase diversity, and exceed fundraising goals. In addition, the hiring of an Academic Dean to oversee articulation of a PreK-12 curriculum helps us promote our School as serving a student from his or her first days in a classroom to graduation. Becoming a fully coeducational institution has strengthened our community. The January

2014 decision by the Board of Governors to accept boys as boarders has paved the way for greater gender equity in the School. The goal for 2014-15 was to enroll 17 boys into the program, and I am thrilled to report that we exceeded that goal, opening the school year with 18 male boarders. Our academic options have expanded to meet our students’ needs. For fall 2013, we launched a Math-Science Emphasis program in which students supplement the usual graduation requirements with advanced coursework in these areas. For successful learn-

ing in grades six to eight, a Middle School Study Skills curriculum was implemented. The Middle School also piloted the use of Edmodo, a social learning network where teachers and students can interact and collaborate online. Facilities are vital to the School, both for retention of current families and cultivation of new families. Thanks to a generous gift from former Stuart Hall parents Grace den Hartog and William H. King, the Davis-Pitt Commons was completed in the fall of 2013, transforming aged tennis courts and overgrown grounds into a

beautiful tiered quad and amphitheater for use by the entire School. This past summer’s inaugural all-school picnic was held there, bringing families from all three divisions together for fellowship, food and fun. Other improvements include the addition of new furniture in many dorm rooms, upgrades to our security system and—thanks to Stuart Hall School alumna Anne Norris Kast ’66—construction work began on an outdoor multipurpose court, installation of new Lower School playground equipment, and refurbishment of our Fitness Center.

In addition to these wonderful transformations, I am pleased to report we ended the fiscal year with a balanced budget for the fifth consecutive year. Not only is our School growing and improving; we are doing it all costeffectively. I am proud of this past year’s many accomplishments and confident about our future. Thank you for the large part you play in making Stuart Hall School the best educational institution in the Shenandoah Valley. Sincerely, Mark Eastham, Head of School

Trayona McKeithan GIVING IN GRATITUDE We are all shaped by our experiences. Whether good or bad, they help mold our personalities and our outlook on life.

Recent Stuart Hall graduate Trayona McKeithan ’14 has faced obstacles in her young life that many of us can only imagine. As a small child, Trayona, along with her siblings and mother, found herself without a home. For six months she lived with her family in a shelter in Washington D.C., while Trayona’s mother worked to get the family back on its feet. In her senior Chapel Talk, Trayona described the situation as a learning experience, “Even though we really didn’t have anything of our own, living under government’s care and public assistance motivated me to use my brain, put 110% in my school work, and not waste my talents.

8

It also taught me to never take anything for granted.” Trayona recognized early the importance of a good education, and she attended Chavez Prep, a charter school in D.C., for four years. “Chavez taught me discipline, respect, and to take education seriously.” Chavez’s vice-principal, Tara O’Flaherty, a graduate of an independent boarding school, encouraged Trayona to consider boarding school. In 2011, Trayona received an Amy C. Venable Scholarship to attend our School. The scholarship, established at Stuart Hall nearly 30 years ago by Ms. Lucy Venable ’44 in her mother’s name,

provides funding for African American students. “Coming to STU has given me the friendships and relationships with people that I know will last a lifetime, and I know that I will always have another place to call home,” said Trayona. At her new home, Trayona distinguished herself as a leader, serving as a prefect, news editor of the Inlook, captain of the White Team, and as both a Student Government Association and class officer. Now thriving as a freshman at Virginia Commonwealth University, Trayona has not one, but two career goals: to become a physical therapist, and to start her own organization to help homeless

youth attend boarding school. Just as Ms. O’Flaherty and Stuart Hall influenced her life, Trayona now desires to transform the lives of others. And she knows the importance of supporting her alma mater. Trayona, along with all 35 members of her senior class, donated to the Stuart Hall Annual Fund. As she explained, “I was given a special opportunity to attend Stuart Hall, and I want to do my part to give back. I believe that success is overcoming obstacles but not forgetting where you came from, and doing the best in your power to help others.” Thanks to the generosity of Trayona and her classmates, and the support of alumni like Ms. Venable, Stuart Hall will continue to provide an exceptional, college-prep education to future generations.

Giving as a Way of Life DAVID HUTCHINGS

Sophmore class sponsor, co-coach of Stuart Hall’s boys and girl’s cross country teams, and mentor to many students, David Hutchings, or Sẽnor as he’s commonly known understands the value of independent school education.

14

For beloved Stuart Hall Spanish teacher David Hutchings, philanthropy has been a part of his life for as long as he can remember. “My dad taught me the importance of giving both time and money. And I want to help my students understand how they can make a difference by volunteering and fundraising for causes they want to support.” For David, his cause in high school and college was Habitat for Humanity. He raised money, helped build houses, and participated in the Collegiate Challenge during school breaks. Volunteering his time and working with others for a common

good are fulfilling for David, and he is actively involved in planning community service activities for Stuart Hall students. “I love teaching at Stuart Hall because I have the chance to not only educate children, but also to mentor them. I have the opportunity to delve into character education, and help my students understand how rewarding philanthropy can be.” David is proud that he has given to the Annual Fund every month of the five years he has taught at Stuart Hall. He spent his childhood attending independent schools and understands that tuition alone does not cover the costs of running great schools

and educating students. “As an educator I understand the value of independent school education and want to support Stuart Hall as much as I am able.” David’s father also supports the School through the Annual Fund. According to David, “My father says that sending my brother and me to an independent school is the best decision he could have made and he wants to do his part to add to their financial stability.” We are very grateful to have David and his father as members of our community and extremely thankful to have great teachers like David in the classroom.

giving to transform GRACE DEN HARTOG & BILL KING

There is no better service we can render to the masses of people than to set about and preserve for them wide spaces of fine scenery for their delight. - JAMES BRYCE

Grace den Hartog and her husband Bill King believe strongly in the transformative power of philanthropy. Although their law careers and family life keep them extremely busy, they find time to volunteer and support non-profit organizations in their Richmond, Virginia community and beyond. Grace is a former member of the Stuart Hall Board of Trustees and currently serves as vice-president of the Board of Directors of the Science Museum of Virginia Foundation. Bill currently serves on the boards of St. Christopher’s School and Lewis Ginter Botanical

18

Garden, and is past chairman of the Dartmouth College Board of Trustees and the YMCA of Greater Richmond. The couple’s daughter, Mary Douglas “Mattie” den Hartog, is a 2005 graduate of Stuart Hall School. During her two years as a boarder, Mattie formed strong bonds with fellow students and teachers and earned honors in Visual and Performing Arts. Mattie’s positive experience at Stuart Hall prompted Grace’s decision to join the Board of Governors in 2008. As a former Stuart Hall parent and board

member, Grace understood that tuition alone does not cover the costs of running the School, let alone pay for capital improvements. Therefore, when she and Bill were asked by Head of School Mark Eastham to help fund a new facilities project on the Staunton campus, they not only agreed, they offered to be the lead donors. Stuart Hall’s board and administrative team had long desired to improve the area between Old Main and Robertson House that had fallen into disrepair. It was one of the only locations on campus

that wasn’t especially attractive or highly utilized, and Mr. Eastham and many others saw the potential for vast improvements. Thanks to the generosity of Grace and Bill, as well as unrestricted bequests, over a period of four months worn tennis courts and an unusable hillside were transformed into the Davis-Pitt Commons. Named in honor of Grace’s mother, Jane Pitt Robinson, and Bill’s mother, Suzanne Davis King, the Commons provides a multitiered quad-like gathering spot for students, faculty and classes, as well as a patio/stage that can be

used for outdoor seating, theatre productions, and other events. "We were absolutely delighted to participate in extending Stuart Hall’s education outreach beyond its four walls into a beautiful and inviting outdoor venue,” Grace shared. “We couldn’t think of a more perfect way to honor our mothers, both of whom loved their gardens and backyard gatherings of family and friends, and to help establish a common place of beauty and function that all in the Stuart Hall family could enjoy.” Today, the Commons has already established itself as a vital and

fundamental part of the Stuart Hall campus. Classes are often held there, students and faculty enjoy meals on the patio, and the theatre class rehearses there. This past May, Stuart Hall held its 171st commencement ceremony on the Commons, with Grace den Hartog appropriately serving as graduation speaker. And in August, the Commons provided the perfect location for the first all-school picnic, allowing the entire Stuart Hall community, Prek-12, to join together to welcome the start of the 2014-15 School year.
