Our Mission To prepare students of all faiths for success in universities worldwide and for engaged lives of intellectual curiosity, creativity, and contribution. Our Vision At Stuart Hall School our vision is to produce students who are invaluable to the future and will navigate with confidence a world we cannot even imagine. To educate in the 21st century is to instill in students the truth of Socrates’ famous paradigm, “wonder is the beginning of wisdom.” To that end, our vision is to collaborate with the city of Staunton and with the community at large to deliver outstanding project-based and authentic learning through curriculum that is inextricably tied to the people, places, and programs within this vibrant, nationally recognized area.
The Stuart Hall D “Education in the 21st century is about creating innovative, flexible thinkers. Stuart Hall is modeling innovation and flexibility for its students in this strategic vision. Student outcomes from project-based learning are well documented and have high rates of success, and incorporating the city of Staunton and its surrounding areas into an authentic learning curriculum will establish Stuart Hall as a thought-leader in independent schools.” –Pat Bassett, National Network of Schools in Partnership and former President of the National Association of Independent Schools

Be In
Whether students are writing daily blogs in 3rd grade, working with classmates to design a perfect community in 6th grade English, or practicing swordsmanship in Upper School Military History, creativity is celebrated in every classroom at Stuart Hall.
Our faculty encourage students to ask questions and explore new directions and approaches to problem solving: How do I learn more about what I already know? How can I use what I know in a new way? What original ideas do I have? By providing a supportive environment that fosters curiosity and metacognition, every student graduates with the transferrable skills needed to challenge standing ideas and create new ones.
e Innovative. “The reason I love Stuart hall is that, in addition to developing a strong work ethic and personal responsibility, I am given the room to use all of my creativity.” –James ‘19
“At Stuart Hall, learning is fun and you actually want to go to school. I can’t imagine going anywhere else.”
Stuart Hall School fosters academic excellence while challenging young adults to hone their critical-thinking skills and personal initiative in preparation for college and life beyond.

Staunton Is Our Campus With a diverse array of institutions, businesses, and non-profits in our community, Stuart Hall is well positioned to partner with organizations for engaged learning outside of a traditional classroom. Whether students collaborate to solve the needs of community members with Blue Ridge Area Food Bank or engage in discourse about community farms and sustainability with Project Grows, Stuart Hall students spend time inside and outside of the classroom, connecting multiple academic disciplines to specific projects or challenges. Many schools in the country are seeking a project-based or inquiry-based educational model. Stuart Hall is distinguished from its peers in our efforts to tie curriculum to the community in which our students live, grow, play, and learn. Â
Imagine learning how to balance an equation in chemistry class as you actively work on the water quality of the stream running through town. Rather than working on hypothetical problems, Stuart Hall students analyze the needs of our neighbors and peers so the solutions they work toward affect change in their immediate surroundings.
Project-based learning Project-based learning (also called inquiry-based or authentic learning) is a movement that aims to prepare students for realworld situations, teaching important content (chemistry, algebra, writing, literary analysis, etc.) through solving problems to develop key skills (collaboration, communication, innovation and others). Through project-based learning, students acquire lifelong skills that empower them to take initiative and responsibility, build confidence, think independently, work in teams, communicate ideas, and manage themselves more effectively. Research has shown authentic learning through real-world experiences develops deeper, understanding leading students towards success in college, career, and civic life. Our location in the city of Staunton provides unique access to real-world experiences through established community relationships.

Our students arrive at university ready to form rich, meaningful friendships, and ready to contribute to their immediate communities through civic engagement and reflective service. Taking responsibility for and contributing to the global and local communities is a hallmark of the Stuart Hall education. Celebrating Têt, providing dinner for a homeless shelter, and organizing a fundraiser to help build a school in the Philippines are a few of the many projects our students have successfully undertaken.
“In addition to local day students, I went to school with people from Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America, as well as much closer to home. The different cultures represented are integral to the Stuart Hall community and add much to our education by expanding our experience of the larger world.”

Be G The development of a global perspective is an essential part of the Stuart Hall experience. With a rich, multicultural student body representing more than 16 countries from around the world, students learn to engage with others on a global scale and often find their worldview expanded as they better understand cultural issues.
e Global.
Engage. Contribute. Serve.
Communicate. Â Collaborate. Initiate.
Be A
In a focused and intentionally small school, everyone has the opportunity to learn his or her strengths and to experience new responsibilities every day.
Whether through leading an assembly in 5th grade, organizing a community service project in 8th grade, or serving on the Student Government Association in 11th grade, Stuart Hall students learn the value of leadership and the fundamentals of collaborative working environments.
Our faculty and academic program are instrumental in helping students mature into ethical, responsible, and effective collaborators and communicators. Leadership skills are developed as students begin to answer key questions: How do the choices I make affect my life and the lives of others? How do I know when to lead and when to follow in order to reach a common goal? How do I effectively articulate my thoughts and ideas? How do I ethically and honorably access, evaluate, apply and manage the information available through technology?
e A Leader. “The environment at Stuart Hall allows my children the freedom to develop a unique wit, a deep sense of compassion and responsibility, and an unmatched work ethic.”
–Cary, mother of Hannah ‘16, Oliver ‘19, and Sophie ‘22
College Counseling Our college counseling program, directed by an experienced college counselor and a team of faculty advisors, focuses on helping each student find the college or university tailored to his/her interests, personality, and academic goals. To do so, we use the Naviance college and career readiness program. The curriculum begins in the 6th grade and provides students with lessons that cover a broadrange of topics to help them transition from middle school to high school and planning for life after graduation.
Test Preparation Stuart Hall provides students with access to an eight-week SAT & ACT prep class. The class, offered by leading SAT prep company Georgetown Learning Center, combines expert materials with in-person instruction to deliver information in a way that kids understand. The program helps students boost their scores and confidence.
