ESL - Learning English at Stuart Hall School The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program provides all non-native speakers of English with the language skills necessary to succeed both at Stuart Hall and at colleges in the United States. Based on testing results, the students are placed in one of the three ESL classes that best meets their individual needs. All students who succeed in our ESL program will graduate ready to attend college in an English speaking country. ESL I ESL I is designed for first year international students who need additional practice in grammar, reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The review of grammar is an integral part of this class and involves both theory and practice; the goal is for students to achieve grammatical accuracy in writing and speaking. ESL Proficiency ESL Proficiency helps students explore more sophisticated forms of preparatory school writing and reading. Using a process approach to composition, students gain experience in different types of writing ranging from the informal journal to the more formal essay or research paper. At the end of the year, students who meet the Programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s criteria may be considered ready to take regular English classes. ESL Transition ESL Transition serves as a bridge between mainstream classes and ESL 1 or ESL Proficiency. In the Transition class, students continue to use the process approach in the writing of formal essays. Here, significant attention is paid to study skills, note taking in English, and TOEFL and SAT preparation.

financial aid Stuart Hall seeks to provide assistance to the families of qualified students who do not have the financial resources to attend. Financial aid is based on an assessment of family need and is reviewed every year. Parents must file a Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS) with the School and Student Service for Financial Aid (sss.nais.org/parents/). The Stuart Hall Financial Aid Committee then uses this analysis to determine financial awards. Please note that students must submit their admissions application and be accepted to Stuart Hall before financial aid will be offered.

The Stuart Hall academic program provides a solid foundation in the Liberal Arts and a strong social network to prepare students for a successful college experience. FINDING THE MATCH The mission of Stuart Hall School includes a focus on the whole child, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mind, Body, Heart, and Spirit.â&#x20AC;? The philosophy of the College Counseling office is no different. Because college acceptance and attendance is a given for our students, our emphasis is centered on finding the right college for the individual student. Our College Counseling program, directed by an experienced college counselor and a team of faculty advisors, focuses on personal attention throughout the college process to help each student find the college or university tailored to their interests, personality, and academic goals. To do so, we begin the College Counseling process in the 8th grade, and help both students and parents navigate what can often seem an overwhelming process throughout the Upper School years. Together, we build a customized application strategy for each student that takes into account their personality, passions, interests, and academic performance.

COLLEGE PLANNING TIMELINE At Stuart Hall, we believe in starting the college process as early as possible. Information is critical for students to make good decisions about college. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why college preparation at Stuart Hall begins in the 8th grade with our College Week workshop. We hold class meetings for freshmen on such topics as time management, the importance of AP and honors classes and choosing courses carefully, and we compile an activity and honors resume for each student that they can update as needed. In addition, students in the ninth grade start taking the PSAT on campus, which they will continue taking through eleventh grade. During tenth grade and eleventh COLLEGE ACCEPTANCES

SAT PREPARATION COURSE grade, students engage in oneon-one sessions with the College Counselor to discuss issues like building a resume, researching colleges, and interviewing. Test preparation is paramount, especially as students take either the SAT or ACT. We offer assistance in finding the right test-prep program for each student. Students begin their last year at Stuart Hall with the annual Senior Retreat, which includes essay brainstorming and mock admissions interviews. For the rest of their senior year students will meet frequently with the college counselor as they complete their applications, write essays, and juggle deadlines. As you would expect, the college counselor lends a guiding hand every step of the way.

Stuart Hall students have access to an SAT Review Course. In this course, students receive diagnostic testing to determine areas of strength and weakness. An equal amount of instructional time is focused on the Reading, Writing and Math sections of the SAT. Ample time is provided for the review of content material, test-taking strategies, anti-stress techniques and timed practice drill. All students receive a suggested home study/review plan at the conclusion of the course. Emphasis throughout the course is on how to take the SAT or PSAT successfully.

Math & Science Emphasis Programs

The goal of the Math and Science Emphasis program is to develop in students an appreciation for and a depth of knowledge within specific areas pertaining to mathematics and the sciences. For those students with the interest and aptitude to qualify them to concentrate in mathematics or science, Stuart Hall offers a comprehensive college preparatory diploma with a designated emphasis in Mathematics, or Pre-Medical or Pre-Engineering. These unique programs prepare students for future STEM careers and give them access to advanced subject matter while instilling critical thinking skills and creativity inherent to any good college preparatory curriculum.

The Math Emphasis Program at Stuart Hall School is designed to give students a broad and solid foundation in mathematical principles early-on, take accelerated courses as they progress throughout their tenure, and encourage independent research and reasoning as they prepare for college-level math. In addition to mathematics courses, which include AP Statistics, AP Calculus BC and Advanced Mathematics, Math Emphasis students must take related science courses in which they will apply mathematical concepts: AP Physics I-II, AP Chemistry, and others. The culmination of the Math Emphasis Program is a yearlong research project concentrating in the student’s particular area of interest.

The Pre-Medical Emphasis Program is designed to expose students to the world of medicine through rigorous academics and hands-on opportunities for discovery and learning. With a full core-competency curriculum in Biology, Human Anatomy, and both AP and Organic Chemistry, students will be well prepared for future collegiate experiences in both the classroom and the lab. Moreover, partnerships with local universities, hospitals, and research facilities enrich the student’s experience as he or she explores the medical field. Pre-Medical tracks also culminate in a year-long research project at the end of the two-year program.

Pre-Engineering Emphasis students take a variety of courses that will prepare them for challenging courses throughout their academic lives. Required courses include core-competency sciences and math courses, as well as AP Physics I-II, Robotics, and either AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science, or AP Computer Science. Correlating AP math classes include AP Calculus BC or AP Statistics. Through a combination of specialized instruction, hands-on laboratory work throughout the program, and enriching experiential learning opportunities, Pre-Engineering students will be well prepared to succeed in their year-long capstone research project and to pursue collegiate and graduate careers in several key engineering fields.

TRANSPORTATION Students who live in the surrounding area can take advantage of bus routes from Harrisonburg, Lexington, and Waynesboro. Our routes run to the Lower School and Middle/ Upper School campuses and a shuttle in between the two makes it easy for siblings of different ages to ride to school together.

Our bus stops are in safe, public locations that are easily accessible to parents for dropoff and pick-up, and our bus fleet includes mini coaches that are comfortable for the rides to and from school. Our drivers are caring individuals who see students safely to their destinations and whose record of service is impeccable.

Transportation is provided at a fee, which varies depending on the route and frequency of travel. Centrally located routes are determined by the geographical placement of our families from year-toyear. Please inquire about stops close to your home.
