Dear Sacred Heart Family and Friends, Each year I reflect on what our community has accomplished, but more importantly on how we accomplished it. As a Sacred Heart school, we recognize that the accomplishments of

our students and faculty are grounded in a calling to prepare the next generation for lives of

leadership and service. Stuart girls and young boys have a sense of a higher purpose and know that by leading with heart, they can make a difference in the world.

For 56 years, Stuart has been blessed with the Sacred Heart traditions and the Goals and

Criteria to guide our curriculum and the experiences of our students. We are charged with living a life of purpose, of integrity and of conviction. In 2019, our community built on this

foundation and embraced what it means to lead with heart across all three academic divisions and through the arts, athletics and service. With the guidance of Stuart faculty, our girls and young boys not only learned how to identify a problem and to ask “What can I do to make

a difference?” but our students took action to address issues around the world and close to

home. From Goal 3 Days to project based learning, each Stuart student can see how his or her

contribution can make a difference - all with the teachings of our Founding Mothers as a guide. As you enjoy this edition of Stuart News, I invite you to reflect on the importance of a Sacred Heart education and what it means to lead with purpose and heart in your own journey as a member of the Sacred Heart community.

DR. LISA MILLER HAS SPENT DECADES RESEARCHING THE SCIENCE AND THE POWER OF SPIRITUALITY, and has written and spoken extensively on the topic. In her book The Spiritual Child, she not only outlines the evidence for an innate, genetic spirituality, but how parents are and can be even more influential in the development of this foundational, protective capacity in their children.

THE SCIENCE AND PROTECTIVE POWER OF SPIRITUALITY

Lived Out at Stuart

BY BETH MARKS '84 AND ALICIA FRUSCIONE '98 | WITH EXCERPTS FROM THE SPIRITUAL CHILD BY DR. LISA MILLER

Spirituality is a science? Well, not exactly. But over the past two decades, spirituality certainly has been proven by science. Evidence-based research and imaging have shown the effects of spiritual engagement on brain structure, mind and body. Thus science provides us with “strong evidence that biologically, neurologically, and psychologically, spirituality is part of our nature and is foundational to thriving," Miller writes. If something is proven to be fundamental to flourishing or succeeding, one would expect that it would receive the commensurate amount of attention. Further, considering that spirituality, while innate, “can be sustained and cultivated … or dulled by neglect,” wouldn’t you want to make sure you are on the right side of that story for the sake of your children? Spirituality is the most powerful form of resilience, protectiveness, and thriving known to medicine and the social sciences. “Shutting down spiritual development [even unintentionally] creates a developmental gap,” but it is one that society seems unconcerned about. Perhaps simply unaware of the importance of spiritual development or the role we (parents, family, friends, educators) play in affecting the outcome. We must make spirituality available to children, primarily through relationships in which an adult is showing up, being there, engaging in conversation, taking their lead, and exploring their questions. Children need to find a spiritual connection. While this is often a parent at first, the truth is that many adults have the ability to impact children spiritually. Each adult in a child's life “has a personal choice to decide to be a spiritual presence and model of love, and as they choose to do so, the child’s routine social world becomes … a place to learn spiritually in daily life.” Stuart is a place where children are offered a place to do this exact kind of spiritual learning in their daily lives, in

S TU A RT N E WS M AGA Z I N E

addition to excelling in the academic fields of study and the hard work of being kids. In fact, they happen simultaneously. They are layered throughout a child’s curricular and co-curricular experience. The place is safe for spiritual development, even when the content of the conversation may be mathematics or literature or playground dynamics. Stuart provides children a context in which they can engage in thoughtful dialogue around shared commonalities. When we talk about educational curricula intended to turn out a well-rounded child, no one debates the need for children to develop their core faculties in reading, writing, and arithmetic. Natural spirituality just isn’t considered one of them. At Stuart we challenge the societal view of spiritual development as “other” or “unnecessary” and support this essential, foundational growth in our students. It is a part of who we are and what we do. For over 50 years we have been educating young women with the Sacred Heart Goals as our guide in ways that align almost seamlessly with Dr. Miller’s research-based discoveries and recommendations. According to Dr. Miller, natural spiritual expression in children includes: •Natural love of spiritual ritual and prayer •Capacity for spiritual perception … intuitive guidance, love and unitive empathy, a sense of oneness with others •Right action and the desire to be helpful, giving, contributing, sharing At Stuart, we intentionally develop a curriculum model specific to faith and spirituality that fosters a connection to a higher power from the youngest of ages. In the Lower School we begin with social-emotional learning and a

ASP Summer Service Trip | 2019 theology curriculum tailored to celebrate and recognize holidays and celebrations from various religious groups. By Middle School, students engage in thoughtful dialogue as theology coursework engages them in discussion around scripture, reflections on spiritual practices/activities from many religions, and space to pray or meditate. “Students often bring in prayers from within their own spiritual traditions or discuss methods of centering themselves,” shared Cathy Murphy, a member of the Middle School faculty. Even at these young ages, spirituality and personal faith are celebrated and encouraged. As Anna Dulencin P ’27 and Mahmoud El Banna P ’27 shared regarding the experience of their daughter Fatima, “It's important to us that our daughter is educated in an environment that not only values faith as an integral part of her development, but also respects an individual approach to spirituality.” In Upper School, students engage in thoughtful discussion around ethics and spirituality. Practices and symbols across religions are explored and discussed, and students reflect on how similar views and longings are centered in similar questions. “I feel that this has greatly expanded my worldview and understanding of people who are different from myself.” shared Izy Engel '17. “I am so grateful to have been educated in a spiritual atmosphere. At most schools, religion is simply not discussed, but at Stuart I had the opportunity to learn about and gain an appreciation for a

S T UA R T N EWS M AGA Z I N E

broad array of religions and beliefs. Teachers and classmates loved hearing about my different experiences — I even had my Bat Mitzvah [a traditional Jewish coming of age ceremony] at Stuart.” Students grow in an appreciation of those who find the spiritual important and they learn that being spiritual is not the opposite of being educated or rational. You can be spiritual and still be a critical thinker. They can gain an expanded horizon of understanding or at least that basic appreciation. Faculty and staff at Stuart encourage the capacity for spiritual perception and the unitive empathy well beyond young childhood (where it is typically praised and encouraged). The general belief is that it cannot be retained while developing in other areas (e.g. cognitively), but this is counter to the scientific evidence that “spiritual development occurs in tandem with the other lines of development.” The integration of the head and the heart is the hallmark of Sacred Heart education. One cannot function without the other. According to Dr. Miller, “You want your child to draw from both. The goal is to keep both … expanding and deepening together - for the child to integrate both of these ways of knowing into how they understand and interpret the world.” Recognizing that spirituality and faith develop through contemplation and reflection, the Stuart community participates in the daily ritual of “Espacio,” a time of silence and stillness to contemplate, pray or center yourself during

the busy life we all lead. “Science shows that mindfulness can be the gateway to spiritual discovery” and we find it important to offer our community a few minutes daily to participate in this countercultural practice. As Marty Arsenault, chair of Stuart’s Theology Department, shared, “Since everyone is aware of the need for self-care and balance, students see these discussions and activities as invitations to explore ways to center and calm themselves and as a way to affirm that they are a part of something bigger than themselves and beyond themselves.” Reinforcing spirituality and reflection, from the youngest grades through high school, our students are looking outside themselves, contributing and sharing with others through the five Goals of Sacred Heart. By “helping those in need” (Goal 3), and “making wise choices” (Goal 5), students develop a deep sense of social justice and community (Goal 4). While the young students raise awareness and collect supplies for needs in our community, the oldest students are studying global justice issues and creating innovative ways to fund and solve them. This is all a part of spiritual development - and it is a Stuart education. We care so much about spiritual development and how we positively contribute to that of the students because of the protective power of spirituality. From mental health to substance use and abuse, “personal spirituality is the most potent form of protection against suffering in adolescence.” Specifically, once an adolescent girl has reached puberty, “a personal relationship with a higher power was even 50 percent more helpful in protecting against depression.”

The Goals & Criteria of the sacred heart GOAL I

A personal and active faith in God.

GOAL II

A deep respect for intellectual values.

GOAL III

A social awareness that impels to action.

GOAL IV

The building of community as a Christian value.

GOAL V

Personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom.

As children grow into adolescents, biological changes are happening, including “a biological surge [that] unlocks the capacity for spiritual development … and increased capacity for awareness and a desire to understand their inner spiritual life.” Through these changes and the difficult, biologically initiated work of individuation, a lot of “wear and tear” is put on the spiritual 'family,' the safe place to develop spiritually, the “field of love,” as Dr. Miller has termed it. At Stuart we are keenly aware of our spiritual impact and thus responsibility. As a community we are a spiritual “family” for the students. “The strongest way to encourage spirituality in your child is through positive, loving family connection, and the bigger the “family”…the larger and more loving those connections are.” Since 1963, Stuart has been a leader in offering an educational setting where children can express and develop their spirituality through encouragement, guidance, positive modeling and love. Stuart is a school community where girls are encouraged to challenge themselves academically and are given the safe space to explore who they are and their transcendent connections, in tandem. Stuart provides girls with the opportunity, tools and skills to counter the pressures of society and mental illness. Stuart is a partner your partner - in raising girls to be women of courage and confidence, poised to make global change.

Q&A WITH LOWER SCHOOL STEM SPECIALIST

ELENA NICKERSON ELENA NICKERSON DISCUSSES HOW PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT INSPIRED A MORE PURPOSE-DRIVEN CURRICULUM

Our girls' learning hinges on the quality of our faculty. They are our greatest asset and our students’ greatest resource. When surveyed about their Stuart experience, it is the relationship with their teachers that our students rate most highly. Faculty are experts in their fields, innovators, mentors and colearners. Superb teachers know the subjects they teach and know how to teach them well, so we invest heavily in our teachers. Since 2011, we have committed over $2 million to faculty professional development. Each year we invest an average of $3,000 per faculty member on professional development, and that is three times what we were spending in 2010. To illustrate one way that our faculty translate their learning into meaningful classroom experiences for our students, we spoke with Lower School STEM Specialist Elena Nickerson, who celebrated 30 years at Stuart at the end of the 2018-2019 school year, about how her professional development last fall coupled with the school theme of “Lead With Heart” created more purpose around her fourth grade culminating project. Q: Your culminating project in the fourth grade was inspired by both the school’s theme and professional development course you attended in fall 2018. Tell us more about this conference and its takeaways. Last fall, The World Leadership School held a three-day conference called K12 Purpose Summit. The guiding question was, “How can K-12 schools help students explore, discover and articulate a sense of purpose?” I attended with my colleagues Jan Baldwin, Amanda McCarther and Patrice Dias. Purpose was defined as a stable intention that is meaningful to self and beneficial to the world. Many times,

S T UA R T N EWS M AGA Z I N E

professional development is focused on the “how to” technique for educators. As one person at the conference remarked: “Technique is what teachers do until the real teacher shows up.” During the summit we engaged in many mindful experiences and interactive discussions focusing on understanding our own personal purpose and passions. We were challenged to explore the ways we engage our students so that they understand “why” we are in the classroom. Building relationships and bringing our authentic selves are essential. It is also important for educators to recognize the purpose/passion of the students in our classrooms. Can we see the light behind their eyes, and how do we nurture and encourage that passion? Q: How did your experience influence the Lead with Heart project, and what did the girls learn from it? After the summit, I began to reflect on the various projects and activities that are part of the STEM program. For many years, students in grades 2-4 participated in a STEM fair. The voluntary participation in the fair was a valuable learning experience that provided the students with an opportunity to explore a topic of interest while gaining scientific knowledge and practicing presentation skills. Certainly, the chosen topics were meaningful and important to the individual student’s interest. However, the second component

PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES AND TIME FOR STUDENTS

to tap into their desire to learn about their world is necessary so that they can pursue their interests and passions."

q&A WITH LOWER SCHOOL STEM SPECIALIST ELENA NICKERSON of the definition of purpose (beneficial to a greater community) was lacking.

Q: As teachers, we are always learning and innovating. In your 30 years teaching at Stuart, how has your teaching style evolved?

Since the theme for the 2018-2019 school year was “Lead With Heart,” I began to think about opportunities for my students to reflect on their passions and how to engage in a learning experience that connected passion with purpose. Providing opportunities and time for students to tap into their desire to learn about their world is necessary so that they can pursue their interests and passions. Lead With Heart is a project-based learning process where students explore topics and interests connected to their passions. In addition to researching about the topic or concept, they apply problem-solving to seek a way to share what they learned with an audience. After the students formed groups based on their passions, they discussed situations or issues related to their topic that concerned them or presented a challenge.

For the first 35 years of my teaching career, I worked with students in grades 5-8. Five years ago, I made the transition to be the STEM specialist for the Lower School. I will never forget my first day with a first grade class: I had planned an entire lesson, and I felt so prepared. It turns out the students had other plans. Within the first 10 minutes, I realized that being in a room with 6-year-olds was vastly different than 11-year-olds. I am so grateful for the support of my colleagues, particularly those that work with students in the younger grades. I admit it was a big learning curve for me that first year and I attended many workshops about early childhood education. I learned to be very flexible and listen carefully to my students. They were full of so many questions and wonderings, and it was OK if I did not stick to the lesson plan. If a student were to ask me, “When are we going to learn about the ocean?” I would not tell them that the topic is not part of the curriculum. I would facilitate their interest and provide resources and opportunities for them to explore what they want to know.

As part of the fourth grade leadership goals, the Lead With Heart project provided an opportunity for the students to apply the leadership skills in the area of STEM. The projects completed included environmental, wellness, technology and social-emotional learning concepts. It was an amazing experience to witness the passion in the students as they engaged in activities with the school community to help make a difference, raise awareness and impact change. Students were asked to write reflections about the experience of completing this project. All of them commented that they felt their actions made a meaningful difference. They also commented that they learned the importance of organization, collaboration and communication.

Q: What are some future goals either for you or your students? I am a lifelong learner and I appreciate the opportunity for faculty development that Stuart provides. I feel very supported by the administration and my colleagues as we continue to encourage and implement curriculum that is driven by problemsolving, discovery and exploratory learning.

If a student were to ask me, “When are we going to learn about the ocean?” I will not tell them that the topic is not part of the curriculum.

I would facilitate their interest and provide resources and opportunities for them to explore what they want to know.

The Soroken

FACULTY EXCELLENCE FUND

When Ari and Janine Soroken joined the Stuart community with their daughter Lillian '24 in 2017, they immediately recognized the extraordinary impact that Stuart was having on their Lillian. What made the difference? Stuart’s committed faculty, who foster a culture of rigorous curriculum and personalized instruction for every girl at Stuart. From the arts to athletics, and from academics to service, the Sorokens have seen Lillian grow exponentially under the guidance of Stuart faculty. Ari recognized that “Stuart has a very strong culture. This culture is one of its greatest attributes and is a direct reflection of the faculty’s commitment to the girls’ education and personal development.” When the Sorokens were discussing a significant investment in Stuart, it was important to them that their gift recognize the faculty who nurture and develop the young women at Stuart. It was their wish for every girl to have the same experience that their daughter has had in her two years as a student because, as Janine Soroken shared, “She is thriving, and it is all because of Stuart.”

S TU A RT N E WS M AGA Z I N E

On June 19, 2019, the Sorokens announced a $500,000 gift to establish the Soroken Faculty Excellence Fund, designed to intentionally support the recruitment and retention of top faculty. During the announcement in front of the Stuart faculty and staff, Ari remarked that “Stuart is the blueprint for a great academic institution. Stuart faculty are the bricks and mortar of this institution. Outstanding faculty attract outstanding students, and the best educators want to be in the classroom with engaged students who challenge them.” Over the next five years, the Soroken Faculty Excellence Fund will empower Stuart to intentionally adjust course loads of our faculty and invest in curriculum development, faculty mentoring and professional development beginning with the 2019-2020 academic year. “This was an easy decision for us,” shared Ari at the announcement. “I can stand before you and say that this world needs Lillian, and all the young women of Stuart. These women are the changemakers of tomorrow. They will enrich their communities and be highly competitive in their chosen professions.”

ALUMNAE NEWS: DOCUMENTARY FILM

KNOCK DOWN THE HOUSE by rachel lears '95 DEBUTED AT SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL BY ALICIA FRUSCIONE '98, P '29, '32 Activism and social change were never foreign to Rachel Lears ‘95, having grown up with parents who were part of the anti-war movement, her father a conscientious objector in the Navy. However, she was not personally involved until activism found her, literally occupying her community in NYC during the 2011 Occupy Wall Street protests. Through that, Rachel became involved with the immigrant workers’ rights community, out of which came her first professional film, The Hand that Feeds. Her next project was a short film on voting rights in North Carolina, after which Rachel was looking for new subject matter, perhaps something less political and more family-centered, as she had given birth to her son in early 2016. After the 2016 election, however, she felt she had no choice but to go back to politics.

Looking for a story about people from different walks of life coming together in solidarity to create big change, Rachel became acquainted with two groups: Brand New Congress and Justice Democrats. Both of these groups were recruiting ordinary working people, coming across social divides to create big change. As they brought candidates onto their slates, and as women running for Congress became a big topic, Rachel focused her new film, Knock Down the House, on four women whose experiences inspired her and whose life-challenges were relatable. The unifying factor among the candidates was the refusal to take any corporate funding for their campaigns. They were entirely grassroots funded, and this was the first time this had happened on such a large scale across the country at the Congressional level.

APRIL 4, 2020 #LEADLIKEAGIRL KEYNOTE SPEAKER As Rachel and her family (more on that to come) traveled around the country making this film, there were so many inspiring and memorable moments. One of the most incredible for Rachel, however, was Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s victory night. While many believed it was a winnable race, you just never know in politics, and certainly no one expected the race to be called so early. Rachel was with Alexandria in the car traveling to the watch party after the polls had closed, and Alexandria had not been watching any of the coverage. Having a camera in the car with her and one waiting at the location, they were able to capture the incredible moment of Alexandria learning that she had won the election. Back to Rachel and her family... how did she balance making this two-year “labor of love” with being a mom? Rachel admits it was not easy, as so many working mothers know. In fact, Rachel has redefined “balance” not as a steady state but as a constant process of making adjustments and trying to figure it out. Rachel is so grateful to her supportive husband and filmmaking partner (writer, producer and editor on this film), Robin Blotnick, for helping make this possible. They produced the film as a family, traveling together with their son, who was 1 during the first production trip and 2 this year. Rachel says that without a partner who was invested artistically and financially, this would not have been possible. They divided childcare responsibilities and picked up each other’s slack during the busy times for each of them so they could spend as much time with their son as possible. Rachel shared that she would not have wanted to be away from her son for weeks at a time, and the burden on the partner at home would have been substantial. Their son learned a lot about traveling and Rachel is so grateful they were able to make it work the way that they did.

While in the Upper School at Stuart, Rachel Lears ‘95 aspired to do work at the intersection of scholarship, activism and creativity. She majored in music at Yale, then earned a Master of Arts in ethnomusicology, a graduate certificate in culture and media, and a PhD in anthropology at NYU. Her graduate work focused on music, media and politics in Latin America as well as documentary film production. Since finishing her doctorate in 2012 she has worked full time as a documentary filmmaker and freelance director, producer and cinematographer, focusing on social justice issues. Rachel’s feature film The Hand That Feeds (2014) and short film The New Fight for Voting Rights (2016) have become tools for grassroots movements to build solidarity for social change. Throughout her eclectic career, Rachel has built upon educational foundations in research, writing, photography, music and Spanish, as well as the values of intellectual curiosity, collaboration, community, resourcefulness and respect for diversity and dialogue, all of which she learned and practiced at Stuart.

In closing, Rachel hopes that those who watch the film will take away a message about power and how to build power by yourself and out of the world through collective action. She also hopes that in a world of such great negativity, we can reimagine change and value a positive vision of change that isn’t just based on opposition to something you know is bad, but based on putting forward a bold vision of justice and equity in America. She hopes that you, too, will be inspired by the human journey to overcome the losses and hardships these women have experienced in their lives to put themselves out there and fight these big battles. After the Sundance premiere of Knock Down the House, the film will be released on a wider scale later this year. Please visit the film’s website (still in progress) at www.knockdownthehouse.com.

#LEADLIKEAFOURTHGRADER Stuart fourth grade girls are prepared to lead and change the world. The Lower School experiences of finding their voice, presenting in all different types of settings, problem-solving real world issues, and serving their communities culminate in the #LeadLikeAFourthGrader curriculum and programming.

On day two of the workshop model, we take an in-depth look at the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, defining each one and connecting them to real-life scenarios through trust-building activities, role playing, meditation, journaling and reflection.

The fourth grade girls engage in a three-day workshop model that instills leadership skills and offers hands-on learning and application. On day one, the girls engage in a comprehensive workshop that challenges each student to define leadership and further explore the leadership qualities within her. The girls spend time learning essential public speaking skills and putting them into action. The day ends with a keynote speaker who exemplifies a successful woman leader and role model.

The culminating experience of the workshop model is a "shadowing" exercise where the girls are paired with a person in a leadership role here at Stuart. They are asked to observe and take notes throughout their visit. The girls are then challenged to reflect on what they observed, make connections to the leadership skills they have learned, reflect on what kind of strengths they possess as leaders and imagine what kind of leaders they will become.

STUART CLASS OF 2019

The Class of 2019, more than anything, is passionate. Passionate about education, passionate about extracurriculars. But most of all, we are passionate about the things and people for whom we care. There is no piece of work that we do with a half heart. Each of our spirits is filled with the energy to experiment, to create and to lead. We study hard and we play hard.

You could say that our time at Stuart - all the lessons that we’ve learned, all the experiences we’ve had - has given us all the ingredients in the recipe for success. But I’ve had some cooking experience, and I can say that the best dishes are the ones made when you diverge from the recipe, make some mistakes and add a little of your own flair. And that is the main thing I think our class will take away from our amazing education here. We are already bold and unafraid to take risks, but what we have learned and will continue to learn is the ability to acknowledge our mistakes. We grow from them, and then get right back to creating our next recipe.

SENIORAwards REBEKAH TEN HAGEN

Goal I Margherita Condell Award | A personal and active faith in God Goal 1 is "a personal and active faith in God," and this award honors RSCJ Margarita Condell, who was affectionately known as "Madame." Margarita Condell came to Stuart in 1964 as a beloved French teacher. She left Stuart in 1985 at the age of 84 to take her vows to become a Religious of the Sacred Heart. Rebekah exemplifies the respect, compassion and spiritual faith that are at the center of the first Sacred Heart Goal. She is a Madeleine Sophie Barat scholar and has attended trips through the Sacred Heart network to learn more about our founding mothers. She would run morning meetings with sincerity and humor, and her dedicated work in Student Government was inclusive, meaningful and earnest. She brought with her a profound kindness and generosity as a true representative of the Sacred Heart goals everywhere she went.

ANN JOHN

Goal II Janet Erskine Stuart Scholar Award | A deep respect for intellectual values Goal 2 is "a deep respect for intellectual values." As this year’s Janet Erskine Stuart Scholar, Ann was renowned for her curiosity, intellectual passion and sharp wit. She tackled an exceptionally diverse range of subjects in her time at Stuart, including elective courses which she was not required to take. Her genuine zeal for learning and her commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion inspired her teachers and peers, who found her passion to be contagious. We are confident that Ann will continue to pursue deep learning and to ask great questions during her studies at college and beyond.

AMY ROSICA

Goal III RSCJ Service Award | A social awareness that impels to action Goal 3 is "a social awareness that impels to action." The Goal 3 RSCJ Service Award is presented to a student who never fails to serve others before herself. Not content to serve alone, Amy used her contagious spirit and kind heart to guide others to selflessness and generosity. She demonstrated her passion for helping others, both within the Stuart community and beyond, as an active member of Outreach Club, Charity: Water and PRISM. She also used her expertise in technical theatre to contribute to the school community with her tireless work on many school musicals, plays and other Stuart events. As if that wasn’t enough, Amy somehow managed to fit in being her class judiciary representative and being the lead editor of the 20182019 Upper School yearbook.

Your life is a sacred journey. It is about change, growth, discovery, movement and transformation.

It is continuously expanding your vision of what is possible, stretching your soul teaching you to see clearly and deeply, helping you to listen to your intuition. -Janet Erskine Stuart

PRISCILLA FRANCOIS

Goal IV Alumnae Award | The building of community as a Christian value The Goal 4 Award, which represents "the building of community as a Christian value," was given to Priscilla Francois. Priscilla was viewed by many as the embodiment of leadership, responsibility and above all, community. From her roles in the Black Herstory Program to her record-breaking seasons on the track and field team, she found joy and passion in everything she did, and her positive energy always filled a room. Over the past four years, she was a member of the Black Student Union, participated in the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. assemblies for the whole school, served as a blessing minister for mass and served as copresident of the Black Student Union during her senior year. As an accomplished peer leader, Priscilla used her extraordinary talents to strengthen relationships, build memories and exemplify the fourth Sacred Heart Goal.

SIXIAN SONG

Goal V Faculty Award | Personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom The Goal 5 Faculty Award represents a "personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom" and is presented to a student whose time at Stuart has been a story of growth. This year we honored two graduates with the award. The first recipient was Sixian Song. When Sixian started in ninth grade, she was not only new to Stuart but new to the country. Navigating an unfamiliar culture and language was not easy. However, Sixian never gave up and sought out all of her resources to discover more about herself and her environment. In her junior year, she applied and was accepted to attend the Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC) in the fall of her senior year. SDLC was a transformative experience, and before leaving the conference, she decided to return to her birth name, Sixian. Her growth and development in an atmosphere of wise freedom is amplified by her courageous decision to claim her identity and share it with others.

BRIDGET ZHONG

Goal V Faculty Award | Personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom The second recipient of the Goal 5 Faculty Award is Bridget Zhong. The award represents a "personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom" and is presented to a student whose time at Stuart has been a story of growth. Early on in her time at Stuart, Bridget found it difficult to be in a new school and a new country, learning a new culture. She has since become a peer leader, a retreat leader, and a leader in her clubs and activities. Her positive attitude, growth mindset, and her determination to do and be her very best propelled her forward and into the confident, leader, teacher and role model that she is today.

t i a r t r o P OF A GRADUATE BREASIA WILLIAMS What year did you start at Stuart? I came to Stuart in 2006 for kindergarten. What did you do while at Stuart? I played field hockey and ran track in sixth and seventh grade and field hockey and lacrosse in eight grade. I was also a part of the debate team for one year. In high school, I continued to play field hockey and lacrosse, and I also played volleyball for one year. During my sophomore year, I participated in the exchange program and went to Lima, Peru, for two weeks. I was also a member of four clubs, Yearbook, BSU, Charity: Water and Current Events. My favorite classes at Stuart were Intro to Programming with Ms. Testa, AP Biology with Ms. Britt, Modern US History with Dr. Bergman, AP Environmental Science with Mr. Bink, Biology with Mr. Bink, Economics with Mr. Malloy and PE with Ms. Bruvik. What are you going to study in college? I plan on majoring in biomedical engineering and possibly minoring in legal studies or political science. How do you feel that your Stuart experience/education has prepared you for college and/or life? Stuart has prepared me for college and life by encouraging me to venture outside of my comfort zone. When I first came to Stuart, I was very shy; through different requirements and opportunities, I was encouraged to step into unfamiliar territories and do things that would normally be uncomfortable. I have always been the quiet kid who was reluctant to raise their hand or participate in class, but as my time at Stuart progressed, I became more comfortable with myself and those around me and began speaking up more and taking on leadership positions. Stuart has also helped me be prepared for whatever college and life throw at me through its rigorous curriculum and great teachers who teach us to be passionate about issues that are important to us.

ADRIENNE WANG What year did you start at Stuart? I came to Stuart in the middle of high school - junior year. Transferring schools has been the biggest and best decision I have ever made. What did you do while at Stuart? As a transfer student, I engaged myself in this warm stimulating environment. Within two years I was able to find and create experiences that spoke to my wide variety of interests. In an atmosphere that encouraged me to take risks with school activities and classes, I found myself taking challenging classes at the highest levels and joining and leading clubs that aligned with my passions. By taking the maximum number of Advanced Placement courses, I took full advantage of Stuart’s academic offerings. I was able to pursue my interest in neurobiology by conducting an independent research project through Stuart’s STEM Endorsement program. I have also competed in Stuart’s #LEADLIKEAGIRL leadership conference and won for both the Business Fair and STEM Talk. Because of how much I have grown from Stuart’s education, I jumped into every available opportunity to represent the school at various university conferences, speak to prospective upper school students and parents, film promotional videos for #LEADLIKEAGIRL and the upper school, and speak on behalf of the student body at Stuart’s alumni networking events. Additionally, I was highly involved in extracurricular activities, establishing the Business Club, performing percussion for the spring musical and leading the swim team as captain for the Eastern’s Championship Meet. What are you going to study in college? I am interested in studying computational finance, which is a field that studies and solves problems in today’s financial markets using concepts of mathematics and computer science. I’ve always found myself drawn to the sciences and business, and I was able to begin exploring these interests through my high school experiences in and out of the classroom. I also hope to continue my love for playing percussion and join the university symphony orchestra and even the pit orchestra for musical theater. How do you feel that your Stuart experience/education has prepared you for college and/or life? Throughout my time at Stuart, I have grown immensely as a student and a person. I have developed academically to become a more rounded student, finding strength in all disciplines and being curious to learn new subjects. I realized my personal growth in building social skills, such as developing relationships with my peers and teachers, or improving my communication. My environment at Stuart taught me a lot about what it means to have great friends and to be a great friend. Most notably, Stuart has helped me cultivate compassion for those around me. I know that I will always embrace any opportunity to give back to the community, serve others and lead.

Portrait OF A GRADUATE REBEKAH TEN HAGEN

What year did you start at Stuart? I started at Stuart in 2004 for my first year of preschool. Interestingly, I believe this was the same year Cor Unum was built! What did you do while at Stuart? I was involved in theater starting in third grade (which was when drama classes used to start for the lower school) all the way through my senior year. I was involved in Student Government continuously from sixth grade through 12th grade. In my freshman year of high school, I joined Model UN, of which I later became a club head. I also was a founding member of the Stuart Middle School golf team in eighth grade and played on the Upper School golf team for three years. In terms of academics, as I progressed through Stuart, I started specializing in math and social science classes. My favorite class was Microeconomics, and AP US History and AP Statistics were close seconds. Due to the size of Stuart, I was able to hold many leadership positions, which taught me not only how to lead, but how to balance different responsibilities. What are you going to study in college? I will be majoring in industrial and labor relations at Cornell University in the fall, where I will continue studying policy and economics. I received the leadership endorsement and will also be studying leadership at Cornell! How do you feel that your Stuart experience/education has prepared you for college and/or life? My leadership senior thesis project was to create a platform to connect Sacred Heart seniors from across the country who will be attending the same college in the fall. I have also had the opportunity to serve on the board for the National Center for Girls’ Leadership at Stuart this past year. Through Ms. Portlock’s connections and through conversations opened up by the leadership endorsement, I was able to intern in Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker’s Washington, D.C. office the summer before my junior year.

Young Alumna AWARD 2019 Clodagh Coghlan Established by the Alumnae Board this year, the Young Alumna Award recognizes one alumna from among the fifth, 10th or 15th reunion classes for her portrayal of Stuart’s Portrait of a Graduate Statement. This year’s honoree, Clodagh Coghlan '09, has proudly displayed for the last 10 years her Stuart foundation and carried it with her to college and to New York City, where she currently lives and works. Clodagh is a private equity senior associate at StepStone, a firm that perpetuates the belief that investments that improve society fundamentally yield better results. After graduating from Stuart, Clodagh pursued degrees in French and international business from Georgetown University, while also playing field hockey and volunteering in her Georgetown community. Clodagh’s time at Stuart was instrumental in her selection of a challenging career path in a traditionally male-dominated field. Clodagh credits Stuart with teaching her not only to form opinions, but also to have the confidence and tools to effectively express them. Clodagh also has a strong desire to work for the empowerment of women, something she has done during and after college; she has devoted significant time to educating women on finance, providing them with the tools necessary to found a business, launch a career or establish an independent life, empowering women to be in control of their own futures.

I AM CALLED A "STUART LIFER"

JUSTINE SCHIRO '92 ADAPTED FROM JUSTINE'S SPEECH | GIVEN IN MAY 2018

Good evening everyone and thank you all for joining us this evening. Ellen, thank you for hosting us tonight in your lovely home. I know many of you in this room this evening, but as a note of introduction for those of you I don’t know, I’m Justine Schiro, Class of 1992 and I currently serve on the Stuart Alumnae Board. I live in NYC with my husband and two girls, Elisabeth and Annabel, who attend Convent of the Sacred Heart here in New York City. They are in first grade and Pre-K, respectively. I still return to Princeton, where my mom lives, and this year my girls will be joining the Stuart camps. I am called a "Stuart Lifer," since I began my Sacred Heart journey in Pre-K. When I mention to folks I was at the same school for 15 years, they are often surprised. But they don't know Stuart or Sacred Heart. My parents chose Stuart for me when I was 3, but in eighth grade, I chose to stay. I explored other options for high

school, and found many other wonderful schools in the area where I would have received a great education, but I quickly recognized they weren't Stuart. Stuart has a soul. It has true goals and principles that inform how teachers should educate students, how students should interact with each other and how citizens should participate in the world. I was educated in an atmosphere of wise freedom - I wasn't taught to memorize facts and dates, but from a young age, I was encouraged to really think, to question, to challenge the status quo. I was taught grit - that key component you need to get back up and try again and try harder. It was a safe place where I was encouraged to try and fail, and get up and try again. At Stuart, failure was not shameful - not trying was. For that reason, when I graduated from Stuart and went on to Columbia College, I had the confidence to raise my hand in class. While at ABC, I was willing to walk up to

Peter Jennings in a room full of men as a 20-something associate producer and debate with him about how he wanted to write a page in the show and why my idea should be heard. And he listened. Most important, the support didn't just come from our teachers, it was from our classmates. We came to school strangers and left a real sisterhood. In high school, we all were given slips of cardboard and anonymously had to write something we appreciated and admired in each person in our class. This battered keychain of cardboard slips of thoughtful reflections is one of my favorite things. It traveled with me to college and in all my offices at ABC News. And when I start to doubt myself, it is a reminder of these special "sisters" and the best parts of me they recognized all those years ago. My experience at Stuart is why my girls are now attending Sacred Heart.

ATHLETICS Hall of Fame MARY LANTIN CASPARIS ’90 Mary Lantin Casparis earned 11 varsity letters at Stuart in field hockey, ice hockey and lacrosse, captaining each of those teams in her senior year. Mary was an integral part of the Stuart teams that clinched multiple Prep B championships in lacrosse and field hockey. She was also the recipient of all-area and all-state honors in both field hockey and lacrosse in her junior and senior years. Mary was honored at Stuart for her athleticism, sportsmanship and teamwork as the recipient of the James J. Hughes, Jr. Outstanding Athlete Award in 1989 and the Senior Sportsmanship Award in 1990. Mary was also awarded the NJSIAA Scholar-Athlete Award in 1990. Mary continued her athletic career as a two-sport athlete in field hockey and lacrosse at Princeton University, competing all four years for the Ivy League Field Hockey Championship and two years for lacrosse.

Athletics have impacted every aspect of my life. As an individual, it brought me great joy and fun to be part of a team doing something I loved. The playing fields and rinks were a classroom for

applying determination, will, skill and discipline and most importantly, a place to learn how to work with others.

Leading in sports has directly translated to my career, as I have built teams over the last two decades and continue to enjoy driving toward a common goal and helping individuals do their best as part of a team effort.

HONORING EXCELLENCE IN ATHLETICS AND LEADERSHIP The Athletics Hall of Fame honors those in our Stuart community who have made a significant achievement in their sport and who exemplify the principles of sportsmanship and those in the goals and criteria of Sacred Heart Schools.

KRISTY MOORE ’97 Kristy Moore was a three-sport athlete at Stuart in field hockey, ice hockey and lacrosse. Throughout her career, she was a member of the 1993, 1994 and 1995 Prep-B State Championship field hockey teams and the 1995 Mercer County Field Hockey Championship team, and served as captain during her senior field hockey season. Kristy was selected as the recipient of the James J. Hughes, Jr. Outstanding Athlete Award in 1996, recognizing her athleticism & sportsmanship. Kristy received all-area and all-state honors for field hockey in her junior and senior years, and tied for the second highest scorer in the county in 1995. Kristy also took over Stuart’s field hockey career scoring record at the time. Kristy continued her field hockey career at Gettysburg College, receiving All-American and Conference Player of the Year honors in her senior year.

The value of women coaching and leading girls in an environment that

celebrated healthy competition and a pursuit of excellence as 'athletes', not as 'female athletes', created in me a strong belief

about the potential transformative role of sport in the lives of girls and in our communities. I loved that there was always someone here at Stuart that I could aspire to be more like, to push me further.

A year ago, Meaghan Byrne ‘06 was planning to move to D.C. to pursue a master's at Georgetown in security studies. This year, Meaghan is buying her house in Georgetown. She has one year left of the program, but she’s decided to stay for a while! If you ever want to come visit, you can stay with her, too, in the Airbnb she created this year in the basement of the brownstone here on Q Street. (@HighgardenHouse on Instagram). [No Photo]
