TWO YEARS INTO HER

TENURE

AT STUART, Dr. Patty Fagin spoke to Town Topics Newspaper in Princeton about the 2013 celebration for Stuart’s 50th anniversary and shared proof of the transformational benefits of girls’ schools in the achievements of her new students. She also provided insight on how she planned to expand and evolve the school with changing times. Patty served for 12 years as the first layperson in Stuart's history to serve as head of school. We are tremendously grateful for Patty’s visionary work to advance Stuart’s mission to prepare our young women to lead and serve for the betterment of our world.

As Board Chair Cheryl Lagay remarked in her letter to the community announcing Patty’s retirement, “Patty has been an integral part of our community for well over a decade, and throughout her time at Stuart, she has served as a tireless leader and a faithful advocate for our faculty, alumnae, parents, students and our Sacred Heart values.” Here are some of Patty Fagin's many accolades:

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT–NATIONAL CENTER FOR GIRLS' LEADERSHIP:

Patty’s leadership has enabled Stuart to showcase its expertise in educating girls to a life of compassionate leadership through the launch of the National Center for Girls’ Leadership. With programming that spans all divisions, the Center works to enhance each girl’s path to leadership with coursework, the Upper School endorsement track, guest speakers, alumnae connections and more.

PROGRAM ENHANCEMENTS–STUDENT EXPERIENCE:

Patty’s first priority as a new head was to retain subject matter experts to conduct audits of every academic program at Stuart to ensure best practices in pedagogy. Under her leadership, the school tracked a marked increase in the percentage of recent graduates pursuing majors in STEM. Patty also recognized that participation in team sports is another path to leadership for young women. An important part of her vision was expanding the Athletics Program offerings and the level of competition for student-athletes. In recent years, Stuart’s athletic teams have dominated the New Jersey Prep B Conference.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION AND BELONGING:

The world has changed, and so have we. What it means to be a leader has evolved significantly in recent years, and we have grown in our understanding of the critical importance of developing leaders who are culturally competent, culturally aware and able to foster an environment of belonging. Patty’s work in diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging began in earnest in 2011 and has grown to include a full-time director, regular training for faculty and staff, student course work and programming, parent affinity groups and community engagement and education.

FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY–STEWARDSHIP:

Patty has been an adept steward of Stuart’s resources. She has developed a culture of philanthropy, as evidenced by the Stuart Fund's 30% increase in unrestricted support under her leadership. In addition, Patty inspired the Stuart community to support the Campaign for Stuart, which exceeded its goal and raised $6.9 million for the future of Stuart. At the same time, Patty has overseen the management of a sizable annual budget that is both complex and debt-free and an endowment that has doubled in size to exceed $15 million.

Patty has truly been stirred with enthusiasm and love for the Stuart community and Sacred Heart education. In reflection on her time at Stuart, she has remained humbled at the opportunity to lead Stuart and felt tremendous pride for her Stuart family.

“We have accomplished so much together, and it has been my privilege to serve as your head of school. I will miss our students, who took advantage of every opportunity to grow as true children of the Sacred Heart. To my dedicated faculty and staff, you delivered the mission daily with a commitment and expertise that are truly exceptional and put our girls at the center of all you do. I am grateful to the Board for your endless support and to the alumnae for your wisdom and devotion to Stuart. I am eternally grateful to the Stuart families for your fervent partnership on this Sacred Heart journey. WE WERE AND WILL ALWAYS BE UNSTOPPABLE TOGETHER!”

JULIA BREEN WALL, STUART’S EIGHTH HEAD OF SCHOOL
4 QUESTIONS
with

In the fall of 2021, the Stuart Board of Trustees announced with great excitement that Ms. Julia Breen Wall was unanimously approved to serve as Stuart's eighth Head of School. With nearly 20 years of experience as an independent school educator and administrator in schools for girls, Ms. Wall distinguished herself as a mission-aligned candidate to lead Stuart into its future.

Ms. Wall came to Stuart from Kent Place School, a preschool–Grade 12 independent school for girls in Summit, New Jersey, where she served as assistant head of school for enrollment and strategy. During her decade at Kent Place, she led the school to the strongest enrollment profile in its history through strategic market research and rebranding efforts that have "demystified" the all-girls experience, widened its outreach and strengthened its reputation.

Julia holds a B.A. in English from Loyola University and an M.S.Ed in school leadership from the University of Pennsylvania. She's a product of Catholic school education in Oakland, California, where she grew up and it was at Loyola that Julia deepened her understanding and appreciation of the value of faith and service. The intersection of her Catholic faith and her dedication to supporting each student's intellectual curiosity has been her anchor and her compass throughout her life and her career. She is confident that this will guide her in her role as Stuart's head of school.

GET TO KNOW MS. WALL

In the spring of 2022, Julia Wall was fortunate to spend time on campus visiting classes, meeting with faculty and staff, and immersing herself into the Stuart culture as our future head of school. During these visits, we invited junior Isabel Milley '24 to sit down with Ms. Wall to learn more about her journey to Stuart and her vision for the future.

QUESTION: WHY STUART?

Answer: The all-girls aspect is a distinguishing feature, but interwoven in that are the Sacred Heart goals and criteria, which give every student a reason to do the learning. It gives you a pathway of what you're working toward that's bigger than college. It's bigger than the A; it's about life and how you want to live that life. The interweaving of the all-girls piece, which I think serves to empower leaders, coupled with the characteristics of the goals and criteria, will make the leaders of the future that our world needs.

While I have spent my entire educational career working in all-girls schools, I attended coed schools for most of my time. When I interviewed for a job as an upper school English teacher at an all-girls high school, I wasn’t sure if it was going to be a mission fit for me or if that was the direction that I wanted to go.

But from the first interview, and then every subsequent day of teaching, I found the classroom engagement so remarkably different in an all-girls setting. With

the classroom in particular, I feel like the level of deep engagement, the meaningful relationships that girls tend to have with each other and the trust that they establish in the classroom are so conducive to learning.

During my time in the classroom, the girls were their full and real selves in a way that I think could be more challenging for students in a coed high school. So, from that first experience, I decided all-girls education was the mission work I wanted to be part of and get behind. And, as I was seeking an all-girls school to lead, I looked for a girls' school that was doing all this really well. There are a lot of girls’ schools throughout the country, but not all have the level of academic reputation and rigor that Stuart does. I think it is my job to lift up excellent all-girls schools. That's why I'm here.

QUESTION: WHAT I LOVE ABOUT STUART IS THAT WE ARE A WELCOMING COMMUNITY THAT CELEBRATES OUR DIVERSITY IN MANY WAYS. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THAT AREA?

STUART NEWS 2022 10

Answer: I am going to answer first from an operational perspective and then from a community perspective. How we build community has to have a thoughtful approach; it needs to address the systems and structures that support it. The recent work I've done in that area has been to look at how and where we recruit new students, support a holistic financial aid program, and what the equitable guidelines are in that process.

From the curricular perspective, if you're not always thinking about DEIB (diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging), it is to the detriment of the students in front of us. We've been teaching the same thing for decades, and it's up to us as educators to ask ourselves if what we taught 10 or 15 or 50 years ago remains relevant. Conversations are happening across the nation about what is relevant curriculum and who is represented in those texts we read. As teachers, we have a lot of choices about what we present in the classroom.

I have also done a lot of my own personal work in this area. I'm a white woman; I grew up not having to consider many things about my identity because I fit many of our country's normative standards. Prioritizing these DEIB conversations is a commitment, and I am still early in my own developmental journey. In my early adulthood, I thought because I grew up and lived in an integrated city with many different identities represented, I didn't really have to do the work to identify my own biases. I have come to understand that living and existing in the world makes it difficult not to have any biases. Identifying and owning that has humbled me and has made me more open to receiving and asking for feedback on where I need to grow. And ask for it with gratitude.

QUESTION: MY TEACHERS REALLY KNOW ME AND HELP ME SEE MY POTENTIAL BOTH AT STUART AND DOWN THE ROAD. HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO HAVE STRONG TEACHERS AND WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT STUART’S FACULTY AND STAFF?

Answer: The faculty of a school are its heart center. The research is clear: students who feel connected to their teachers are more likely to be engaged. Now, this requires a teacher to know each student, and to identify her own personal gifts and talents. One of the things that most excites me about leading Stuart’s faculty is that our small size allows time and space to know every girl and to support her journey. In getting to know our faculty, this aspect is one of their favorite qualities of working here.

In my mind, a true mark of faculty excellence is a deep and demonstrated commitment to professional development. We live in a rapidly changing world, and our investment in curricular and program innovation is fueled by significant investment in our faculty’s continued education. This ensures that the entire school community is continuously learning. I can’t think of a better way to model learning and leadership for our students than a teacher learning and adapting alongside their students, even (and especially!) when it feels risky, uncharted and difficult.

QUESTION: WHAT IS YOUR VISION AS OUR HEAD OF SCHOOL?

Answer: My first job has been to learn from the community what you value and love. I also want to learn where there are areas for growth.

As far as a vision for the future, the school's leadership recently launched The Stuart Strategic Plan: Faith in Her Future and has been diligently working through that plan. The pillars—Accelerate Academic Excellence, Model the Mission, Demonstrate our DEIB Commitment, and Activate Her Power to Thrive—are all anchored in the Sacred Heart mission. This plan provides a tangible road map for me as I begin my leadership at Stuart. I believe in this road map, and I am also excited to begin to put my stamp on it. I am most interested in exploring the synergetic possibilities of integrating these pillars and for students to recognize the power of a holistically healthy approach to learning. It is important for students to see themselves as whole beings who are on a journey of growth. We know students are not supposed to show up to a learning environment as perfect and completed beings. It is through growth and exploration—not simply performance and output—that schools demonstrate a true purpose. And at Stuart, that is how our mission shows through our work as educators; it’s how our students embrace growth as a marker of success. Imagine growing up in an environment where there was no shame in imperfection and in its place was room for true learning of one’s self. I want students to unapologetically and confidently seek their resources—academic, emotional, physical and spiritual—as they build their capacity to learn and lead. Creating this culture and environment will be a large area of focus for me in the near future.

FAITH IN HER FUTURE Update

Stuart's strategic plan—Faith in Her Future—was approved by the Board of Trustees in 2021 and outlines four pillars centered in the belief that our mission as a Sacred Heart school calls us to live the goals and criteria. These pillars are academic excellence; leadership and service; diversity, equity and inclusion; and health, wellness and connection. Stuart has prioritized these areas as opportunities for growth and continued excellence in the future, all rooted in our Sacred Heart mission as the cornerstone of our shared vision for the future.

We believe our Sacred Heart mission calls us to educate and empower girls to be a force for good in an increasingly complex and connected world. We will awaken a sense of faith, purpose, belonging and commitment to justice through deeper understanding, articulation and application of our Sacred Heart Mission, Goals and Criteria.

Now a full year into implementation, Faith in Her Future is well underway and the experience of our girls is already being enriched by its vision.

We will fully demonstrate our Sacred Heart commitment by defining and operationalizing a DEIB strategy and action plan

UNSTOPPABLE, FULL-CIRCLE Moments

FOR STUART ALUMNAE AND STUDENTS who spend their lives at Stuart, there are bound to be many full-circle moments. For Stuart Lifer Sydney Amato '23, her full-circle moment was more like a cyclical one—in the literal sense. Sydney is a circus aerialist who credits Stuart as the constant in her life. The leadership development she received from an early age gave her the confidence to pursue a sport that has—in turn—helped to bolster her confidence and leadership through her later years. Sydney’s UNSTOPPABLE story is the perfect metaphor for the impact of an all-girls education. While life will have its challenges, Stuart provides a safety net crucial to an aerialist in training, fostering grit, determination and a try-again spirit that is central to the all-girls educational experience.

STUART NEWS 2022 16

Sydney joined the circus in fifth grade and considers the community a second family. She is a leader within the circus community, as she is now a trainer and coach of aerial silks, trapeze, lyra, sling, rope, cube and hula hoops. She explained that participating in the circus is not just a solo thing; Aerial Troupe means the team must work together to produce a product. When training together, they focus primarily on leadership. Sydney is responsible for calling out moves in order to keep the team in sync while in the air.

“At a young age (13) I started leading warm-ups with confidence," she says. "Because you learn those leadership skills in school, because you learn those community building skills, you gain a level of confidence. If you show confidence in something, even if you maybe internally don't feel super confident, as long as you show up and you think, 'I’ll give it my best and it's going to be great', people feel and respond to that confidence in a positive way.”

Sydney recognizes the connection between her experience at Stuart and her growth as a leader in the circus and credits Stuart for giving her a mindset of risk-taking through trying new things. “[Stuart] is promoting young girls to do awesome things and learn those leadership skills that … other girls don't learn until they're out of high school and into college," she says. "We get those experiences now at a critical time versus later in life.” And there have surely been some stumbles and failures along the way—which is part of the journey. “At Stuart you learn to fail, you have the support to fail … but then you work with the support of your teachers and learn and grow from the experience," Sydney explains. "The same philosophy can apply to [life] and especially to the circus. The aerial drop did not go the way I wanted it to go. Let's try that again and we'll get better. Was my first drop amazing? Absolutely not. And it was terrifying.”

Head of Upper School Dr. Marisso Muoio shared, “Through Sydney’s involvement as a peer leader, president of the Outreach Committee, assistant director of the winter musical and a senior player on our athletics teams, she exemplifies exactly what it means to be a Sacred Heart student leader. She is committed to continuing to better our school community by sharing her God-given gifts and talents with those around her–faculty and students alike."

The takeaway lesson is that Stuart girls are ready to use their powerful minds and voices to make change happen. Students are full of confidence, energy and steadfast in their goals. They have learned to activate their natural talents and develop the skills necessary to achieve whatever they aim for.

I AM UNSTOPPABLE BECAUSE MY PASSION AND DEDICATION DRIVE ME TO ACHIEVE MY GOALS. -Sydney Amato '23

Life at Stuart

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION BELONGING and

Core to our mission is Stuart's work in diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging under the leadership of Monique Jones, MSW, M.Div., as our director of DEIB. Ms. Jones joined Stuart in the fall of 2020 and has continued to build on our commitment to supporting the belonging of our entire community by:

• Establishing a communitywide cultural festival called KOINONIA

• Instituting DEIB liaisons to support DEIB work at each division level.

• Facilitating and completing the fourth SEED cohort, a yearlong faculty/staff DEIB professional development training seminar.

• Completing the second year of teaching the seventh grade DEIB course, an introductory course on the various parts that make up our identity.

• Instituting a DEIB culture survey and relationship mapping in US and MS to measure DEIB impact and students' sense of belonging.

• Establishing monthly book reading visits with EC, engaging topics of being kind and inclusive to everyone.

• Reviewing curriculum: During the 20212022 academic year, Stuart engaged in a review of the English curriculum to ensure that literature read and discussed is reflective of the cultures and experiences of the Stuart community.

• Engaging with the community: The Stuart community continued to build on the Diversity Committee, Alumnae Board DEIB Committee, and Student Diversity Board ("SD Board") as partners in our shared commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.

• Support for the student-led “Buddy Bench” project was unveiled to the Lower School community. This concept was developed by the Student Diversity Board and cohort members of the Class of 2029 to support a sense of belonging for our youngest students.

• Creating the DEIB Digest, which will be made available each trimester in an effort to highlight the DEIB work that is happening across all divisions.

• Completing relationship mapping: The Upper School piloted a relationship mapping project to ensure that every student has a member of the adult community with whom they feel they have a connection and can go to if they ever need assistance or support. The report found that ~95% of our students have identified such a person.

Stuart is deeply grateful to an anonymous alumna from the mid-1980s who has generously supported future initiatives around diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging primarily related to intersectionality. Her generous support will allow us to further advance this work and enhance the experience of the Stuart community.

STUART NEWS 2022 28

The National Center for Girls' Leadership at Stuart delivers on its mission through an innovative preschool through Grade 12 leadership curriculum that is committed to teaching the five standards of leadership: values, intellect, agency, collaboration and vision.

It has been said that some people are born leaders. We believe that leadership can be cultivated and developed through an exploration of leadership theory, the development of leadership skills and qualities, and the application of this knowledge. Established in 2015, the National Center for Girls' Leadership at Stuart (NCGLS) works to support and empower the next generation of female leaders both in Stuart’s community and nationally. Through research, professional programming, development of innovative EC-12 curriculum and national events, the NCGLS serves as a resource to parents, students and educators throughout the world.

Above is a snapshot of K–12 leadership experiences in action at Stuart. To learn more about these initiatives and more, please visit National Center for Girls' Leadership–Stuart Country Day School of the Sacred Heart (stuartschool.org/ncgls).

The work of the center is made possible thanks to the generous support of alumnae, parents and community members, and the Harris B. Siegel Fund for Student Leadership, established by Patricia Costante P’12 and Stephanie Champi ’12.

THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR GIRLS’ LEADERSHIP AT STUART PRESENTS

Service AT STUART

Since the school’s founding, service has been at the core of our mission. During the 2021–2022 academic year, we continued with our commitment to our community through Goal 3 Days, communitywide initiatives, and student-led programs. This year’s service opportunities included:

Goal 3 Days: Each “pod” of students engaged in a Goal 3 Day service experience with developmentally appropriate service initiatives, including a day to raise awareness about food insecurity, environmental causes and bringing joy to Sacred Heart nuns now in retirement.

December’s Share the Warmth Challenge was a great success, with the Stuart community supporting not only Stuart girls but our friends at Loaves and Fishes. With over 100 donors supporting Stuart during the campaign, over 100 winter warmth items were donated to Loaves and Fishes in January 2022.

Loaves and Fishes 2022 continued our tradition of serving our neighbors with over 400 hot meals and 400 lunches.

Aid to Ukraine: After a presentation on the war in Ukraine, Stuart students were inspired to organize a collection of critically needed items to support aid to Ukraine in partnership with Director of College Counseling Cindy Michalak, Upper School Science Teacher Natalia Voicu and Stuart Parent Association volunteers Maura Nester and Mary Waskovich.

Summer ASP: “This was my first time going on ASP and I hope it isn’t my last," said Sydney Amato ’23. "My team’s project was building a front and back porch and we were able to complete the majority of our work. ASP was honestly one of the most physically and emotionally challenging projects I have ever done, but it was all worth it when we got to see our homeowner walk on her new front porch for the first time. The people in Clay County, WV, were some of the nicest people I have ever met and I will forever be grateful for their willingness to welcome us into their homes.”

"On one of my years in high school (in the early 1990s) we also traveled to Clay County! Stuart’s ASP summer trips provided me profound lessons in compassion and action. I feel blessed to have shared my first summer experience with my dad, too. Cheers to you all for picking up a hammer and doing."

Frances Lyons Appointed Director of Athletics

Ms. Lyons brings a proven experience in allgirls athletics programming, a passion for equal opportunities for girls in sports and a vision for Stuart Athletics that will undoubtedly impact the success and continued growth of both our Middle and Upper School offerings. Ms. Lyons will work closely with Stuart academic leadership and admissions to enhance the student experience and introduce new families to Stuart.

Ms. Lyons served as associate director of athletics at The Brearley School, an all-girls K–12 school in New York City, where she managed all operational aspects of athletics, collaborated with the diversity, communications and admission offices, and built internal and external partnerships for the growth of the school and the athletics program. She was also a class advisor and coached the JV girls’ basketball and both the middle school volleyball and track and field teams.

Prior to The Brearley School, Ms. Lyons had a nearly 10-year career in youth sports with a dedication to creating more access for young girls and fostering a welcoming environment with the resources to succeed. From 2012–2018, while at the nonprofit Asphalt Green in New York City, she helped develop sports leagues for public schools in underserved communities and created programs designed for girls

in sports like basketball, flag football, volleyball and soccer. From 2011–2017, she was the assistant varsity and head middle school girls’ basketball coach at the Chapin School, an all-girls independent school in New York City.

“I am delighted and grateful to join the Stuart family as director of athletics,” said Ms. Lyons. “Sports have played a pivotal part in my life, and I have witnessed how a strong athletics program for girls can bring a community together to support them, create a sense of belonging and foster strong coachathlete relationships. I come to Stuart excited to fully embrace the school mission and goals and be a part of an environment that focuses on the development of young girls. I am committed to leading the athletics program with great pride (Tartan Pride!). I wholeheartedly look forward to getting to know the students, my colleagues, and families deeply and forming great partnerships.”

Ms. Lyons received a B.S. in physical education and adaptive education from Brooklyn College in NY, where she was a member of the Division III women’s basketball team and a member of the FIBA Women’s Basketball Association. She went on to earn an M.S. in sports management with a concentration in athletic administration from Southern New Hampshire University in New Hampshire, where she was a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS).

THE BUILDING OF Community

During the 2021 – 2022 academic year, the support of the Stuart community has ensured that our students continue to thrive in an academically rigorous program, designed with the whole child in mind.

Your generous support allowed us to navigate our response to the COVID-19 pandemic with a steadfast commitment to our mission and our students, offering five days of in-person, virtual and hybrid learning to each and every student in our care. This support continues to provide our girls with opportunities to grow in all areas of their lives, from achieving academic success to pursuing their passions.

Stuart’s fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30.
