Casuals welcome Folkestone Invicta to King George’s Arena for this Ryman Division One South tie. Welcome to King George’s Arena for this Ryman Division One South encounter between Corinthian-Causals and Folkestone Invicta. We wish the players, officials and supporters of Invicta as well as the men in the middle. On behalf of the Casuals, I hope you all have an enjoyable afternoon. Folkestone are coming off the back of a fantastic FA Trophy win against former winners Kingstonian. Neil Cugley’s men turned over the Ryman Premier side 2-0 at home and will no doubthave bags of confidence going into today. That’s not to say we won’t be on a high too. The past three matches have seen the cogs start to turn and the pieces click into place (any more clichés, perhaps?). We started with a credible draw against Faversham Town of which the match report

We then travelled to Welling United’s ground to play Erith and Belverdere in the London Senior Cup and a Joel Thompson brace helped secure a second round away tie to Wingate and Finchley. Most recently, we took the short trip to Moatside to play Merstham for the second time there this season. Having narrowly lost out to them in the FA Cup, the tables were turned when Jamie Byatt, returning from injury scored from the spot in the 86th minute. I last reported that we were bottom of the table but one look on the back cover of this programme will confirm that we’ve lifted to 22nd in the league. Helping us to these results have been the likes of Max Hustwick who has joined us on loan from Kingsmeadow and Faizal Kiyingi who last

season was playing for Bedfont and Feltham FC. Fan favourite Joel Thompson finding form has pleased the Casuals faithful too. There’s been some great news and reports from our extensive youth teams, more of which will be in the next programme. It’s great to see Casuals thriving throughout all age groups. It’s worth noting at this point that CCFC Youth are holding a Half-Term Soccer School at Southborough School, week commencing 28th October. Meet the Teams... Folkestone Invicta

his afternoon we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Folkestone Invicta to King George’s Arena. Neil Cugley’s men will be fired up and ready for this Ryman Division One South encounter and I hope that today’s offering will be a real treat for all of us. If you look at Folkestone’s league form, you might think today’s game will be a scrappy affair between two teams laying in the bottom half of the table. If the Isthmian League had a Match of the Day programme, it probably wouldn’t be one of the featured games.

However, league tables don’t always tell the whole truth. The Seasiders have been somewhat of a tough team to overcome in cup competitions this season. The FA Cup started a little shaky, needing a replay and two extratime goals to overcome Combined Counties side Molesey back in September. After a gripping 3-3 draw at the Fullicks Stadium, Folkestone went behind against the Moles in the replay. I was at the replay and Molesey looked good for their 2-0 lead. However, fitness played a part and Folkestone edged back into

the match with two goals from Stuart King. Having led for most of the match, Molesey looked deflated going into the additional period and King added a third to complete a hat-trick to put the visitors through. A shaky start maybe but a solid win against Eastbourne United was followed up by a narrow 1-0 loss to Conference South outfit Ebbsfleet, who were only relegated from the top tier of Non-League last season. Then we come to the FA Trophy; Invicta thumped Waltham Forest back out of Kent with an emphatic 6-0 victory. Simon Austin and Frankie Chappell bagging a brace each. However, they were presented with a tough draw, albeit at home, to former two-

time winners Kingstonian who are competing at the top of the table in the Ryman Premier. What I didn’t expect to see come 5.00pm on Saturday is the scoreline of 2-0… to Folkestone. No disrespect to our visitors today but Alan Dowson’s men are scoring freely at the moment coming off the back of good performances and decent wins in the week over Thamesmead Town and Merstham. Cugley was buoyant about the result and the performance. “That’s probably as good as any game we’ve ever won – and we deserved it. “I’ve said for some time that we’re close to having a really good side here and now we’re beginning to get the results to show for that.”

Meet the Teams... Folkestone Invicta Two second half goals from teenager Johan Ter Horst sealed Invicta’s win and have turned the Fullicks into something of a fortress this season. They’re now six home games unbeaten with five of those being won. Ter Horst has been somewhat of a revelation and it’s not gone unnoticed. However, boss Cugley has played down rumours that the 18 year old forward has been linked to Championship side Burnley.

“I’ve said for some time that we’re close to having a really good side here and now we’re beginning to get the results to show for that.” Cugley admits there is no truth in the rumours. “Some of these guys really do get carried away. I may have to be a bit more careful who I’m talking to in future.” It’s clear that Ter Horst has a bright future in football, but Cugley’s vast experience plays down the hype. “He’s only just back from a nasty facial injury he suffered against Molesey in the cup, of course, and, at this moment, he’s nowhere like close to playing as well as we know he can. “This is his first full season in senior football and he’s got to keep doing it on a regular basis if he really wants to make a name for himself.” What Casuals must take from today’s game is that Folkestone have not travelled well this term. Invicta won their first away game at Redhill’s Kiln Brow last week, but other than that, are pointless on their journeys. This form has left Folkestone a little way from their 5th place finish last season. It’s possible that a higher place could’ve been achieved but results against Casuals frustrated our guests; nil-nil and one-all draws in the league. Based on last season, don’t count out a draw today, but with Casuals really starting to gel, coupled with a shaky away record, three points could be on the cards for Corinth… but on the flipside, a resurgent Invicta oozing with confidence may fancy those three points themselves. A Point Well Earned Ryman League Division One South Saturday 12th Oct 2013 Att: 118 By Malcolm Parker / Stuart Tree

Faversham came into this match on a bit of a wobble but were fairing much better than Casuals in the league after results had seen the Amateurs planted at the very foot of the table. Both teams looked to rectify their recent form. Overall, it was an exciting end-to-end game which somehow stayed even despite both sides creating many opportunities to take all three points. Casuals started the stronger and Juevan Spencer’s early dribble set up a lay-off to Jamie Byatt whose goalbound piledriver was blocked. Danny Dudley beat Faversham keeper Simon Overland to a high corner only to see his header hacked off the line. Now looking more dangerous than in recent matches, Corinth were pulling Town’s defence every which way they could. Byatt’s cross was perfect for Spencer whose shot was palmed away by Overland. On 18 minutes, the home side were ahead. Danny Bracken’s route one kick was nodded on by Byatt, now perfectly linking up with Spencer, nodded onto the frontman and expertly lobbed the stranded Overland. Now on the advance, a cracking team move found Dave Hodges on the wing and his cross seeked out Byatt who could only screw his shot just wide. Faversham were on the backfoot, but Casuals were reminded of their threat when they carved out a great chance to level the match. Jamie Maxted found space in the box and volleyed a cross against the bar. With the rebound falling kindly and the whole goal to make amends with, Maxted fired his second effort straight at a thankful Bracken. Casuals continued to test Overland in goal; first a wicked effort from Hodges and then turning over one from Byatt. Casuals were to then count the cost of not adding a second...

On 36 minutes, the visitors were level. Casuals’ defence momentarily nodded off and a long ball finding Luke Harvey gave him the opportunity to stick one in the far corner. As is often typical, the goal gave Town a real boost and the half ended with them very much on top bringing Bracken more into the game when called in to push over a Wayne Wilson effort. Early second half exchanges were evenly matched but when Faversham introduced a couple of substitutions, it appeared to turn the match into their favour. Brendon Cass’ near post header crashed against the woodwork; Wilson joining in the fun with a 25 yard free kick also finding more wood... this time the bar. Casuals still had attacking notions and Dudley saw another of his efforts cleared off the line from a corner. Faversham upped their game to match the home team’s ambitions and were now a constant threat. Michael Jenner’s long shot was saved by Bracken and from the resulting corner, Dave Botterill headed against the bar... at this rate, the goal frame would have to be replaced! Substitute Renford Tenyue proved to be a real livewire for the Town and his run past three Casual defenders could not be matched for excellence by his shot, as he sliced wide. Darren Marsden’s long effort was parried by the hard at work keeper and safely caught under pressure. Yet again, the Casuals woodwork came to the rescue as Tenyue’s curling shot defeated Bracken in the air only to crash against the frame and bounce clear. Right until the death, Bracken was called into action time and again, including a last gasp brilliant save from Kieran Oliver’s goal bound shot. A point a piece with many positives to come from the match... not least ending the day one position higher than where we started.

CASUALS DEFEAT THE DERES AWAY SHIRT IN LONDON CUP AVAILABLE SOON Casuals built on the draw from Saturday to get the win tonight that will hopefully kick start their season. Responding well to an early Erith goal, Casuals equalised quickly with a fantastic strike from Joel Thompson that became stuck in the top corner of the goal. With the score 1-1 Casuals keeper Danny Bracken pull off a fantastic save to keep things level and then just before the interval, the marauding Dave Hodges slotted the ball home to put Casuals 2-1 up at half time. In the second half, Joel Thompson quickly doubled his tally for the night with a smart finish and Casuals looked good for a 3-1 lead. Erith responded well though and when they received and scored a penalty with ten minutes to go, Casuals did just enough to hold out for a precious morale boosting win in the cup. We will now travel to Ryman Premier side Wingate & Finchley in the Second Round with the tie pencilled in for 27th November 2013 with a kickoff time of 7.45pm. Confirmation of this will appear here.

Folkestone Invicta Player Profiles Roddy Hayward

Joined the club during the summer of 2011 - and proved a reliable standby keeper to the since departed Jack Delo. Can also count Canterbury City and Ashford Town amongst his former clubs and has also played for Deal Town and Ashford United. Made his Folkestone debut in a Kent Senior Cup tie against Dartford in season 2012/13.

Tim Roberts

Joined the club in September 2013 from Walton & Hersham and made his debut against his former club a day later! Had joined Walton & Hersham from Chatham Town, having also played for Croydon, Erith Town, Sittingbourne and Dulwich Hamlet.

Tom Hadler

Teenage goalkeeper who spent last season with Canterbury City. Tom’s first appearance for Invicta was as a substitute in a Kent Senior Cup tie at home to Charlton Athletic and made his full senior debut in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup when he kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 victory over Eastbourne United at the Fullicks Stadium.

Chris Elliott

Very promising young left back who joined Folkestone from Canterbury during the summer of 2013. Has also played for North Kent side Woodstock Sports. Chris - inevitably perhaps known to his teammates and supporters alike as Billy - scored his first goal for the club with a stunning long-range strike at home to Peacehaven & Telscombe in September, 2013.

Frankie Chappell

Originally joined Invicta as a youngster from Gillingham in 2007, but rejoined the club from Welling United during October 2008 and has made now over 250 appearances for Folkestone. Frank has only missed one game in the past four seasons and, voted Supporters’ Player of the Year for 2010/11 he completed a clean sweep, also getting the players player and Folkestone Herald trophies for that season.

Liam Friend

Liam is now Invicta’s club captain having been handed the role at the start of the 2012/13 season. He is now the club’s longest-serving player with more than 300 first team appearance. This outstanding centre back completed over 100 consecutive appearances for Invicta before missing the final day of 2010/11.

Josh Vincent

Josh is the one remaining member of a trio of outstanding youth team players brought into the first team following a financial crisis midway through season 2008/09 that was followed by the departure of virtually half a squad of the higher paid semi-pros. Voted Invicta’s young player of the year in his first senior season.

Phil Stevenson

Phil originally came through the club’s youth ranks before being spotted by Millwall where he progressed to the Lions the reserve side. Primarily a striker during his youth team days, he now plays at wingback or in midfield and is also a product of the Nike Academy. He made his full Invicta debut against Corinthian Casuals in September 2012.

Nat Blanks

Nat was originally with the club as a youth team player before moving on to Gillingham. He has subsequently played for Marlow, Chalfont St Peter and Burnham before returning to Invicta in October 2012 when he made his first team debut in a 1-1 draw at Ramsgate.

Jake Beecroft

Jake joined Invicta from Whitstable Town during the summer of 2013. He originally came through the ranks at Rushden & Diamonds progressing from the youth ranks into the first team. After the Northants outfit folded he joined Tonbridge Angels, helping them win promotion to the Conference South. Impressed in pre-season for Invicta and scored on his league debut at Crawley Down Gatiwick on the opening day of season 2013/14.

Matt Newman

Matt signed for Folkestone towards the end of season 2012/13 from Chatham Town, where he had been Player of the Year. Other previous clubs include Erith & Belvedere, Ashford Town, Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge Angels. Scored a crucial FA Cup goal in a dramatic replay victory at Molesey - his first goal for the club.

Michael Everitt

Micheal is Invicta’s record appearance holder who rejoined the club in September 2013 after a season at Whitstable Town where he was player/coach under the ex-Gillingham and Dover player Nicky Southall. He made his first team debutin 1999/2000 and has served the club loyally to earn to a testimonial in 2008. He is the only player so far to pass 500 senior appearances for the club.

Mike Yianni

Mike rejoined Invicta for a third spell during September 2013 from Hythe Town and scored on his first game back – an eventful 4-2 win over Walton & Hersham in which the home side went 2-0 down after having a player sent off but fought back to win in fine style. He went on to play for Maidstone United, Hythe Town, Ramsgate and Margate where he suffered an injury hit spell.

Dane Luchford

Dane joined Folkestone from Whitstable Town just after Christmas 2012 and made an impressive debut away to one of his former clubs, Faversham. Dane has also played for Horsham and Phoenix Sports. Scored four goals in a game for the first time in his life as Folkestone beat Sittingbourne 5-0 at the Fusllicks Stadium in August.

Johan Ter Horst

Born at Ashford to a Dutch father and English mother, Johan made his first appearance as a substitute at Herne Bay in November 2012. Johan is yet another product of Folkestone’s highly successful youth set up. This season has been interrupted by a bad facial injury suffered in a collision with the Molesey goalkeeper in September when, despite being knocked out in the process, he bravely headed the FA Cup goal which helped Folkestone draw 3-3 against Molesey.

Roland Edge

Rejoined the club from Maidstone United during the summer of 2010. Had originally joined Invicta during the summer of 2007 when he was immediately made captain. Previous clubs include Gillingham, Hibernian and Hull City. Edgey has now made 150 appearances for Folkestone and was made joint assistant manager in January 2013

Simon Austin

Re-joined the club during the summer of 2013. Simon originally joined the club from Walton & Hersham and scored the winning goal in the 2009-10 Ryman League Division One South play-off final against Godalming Town. He then moved to Hythe Town before re-joining the club for a second spell before moving on to Herne Bay and then began his managerial career at Canterbury. His other previous clubs include Maidstone United, Chatham Town and Horsham.

Neil Cugley

Now in his 17th season with the club, Neil has also managed Ashford Town, Folkestone Town and Hythe Town. As a player, he had three spells with the old Folkestone Town club under legendary managers such as Alf Bentley and Robin Thacker. Neil’s name is now synonymous with Folkestone Invicta who he has now managed for over 800 games.

Dave Williams

Dave followed manager Neil Cugley to Folkestone Invicta as assistant manager, having been Neil’s right hand man at Ashford Town. In his playing days Willo represented Folkestone, Dover, Hythe Town and Whitstable Town. Earned widespread praise for his brave, but sadly vain attempts to save striker Paul Sykes when he collapsed on the pitch during a Kent Senior Cup semi-final in 2004.

Abi Winstanley

Abi, a member of a very well known local sporting family, took over as assistant to head physio Dave Williams towards the end of season 2013/14.

Folkestone Invicta FC History

Under manager Gary Staniforth, Invicta joined the Winstonlead Kent League and completed the Division Two league and cup double during the 1991-92 season, also winning the Kent Intermediate Shield that season.

The club continued to make good progress in 1998-99 as Southern League football returned to Folkestone. Invicta finished third in the Dr. Martens League Southern Division behind champions Havant & Waterlooville and runners up Margate, with the promotion race going to the final day of the season. Invicta also reached the final of the 1999 Kent Senior Cup where they lost 1-0 at home to then Conference club Welling United. The club also made its mark in the F.A. Umbro Trophy by beating Conference club Hayes to reach the Third Round before going out 8-4 in an incredible tie away to three-times winners Woking.

olkestone Invicta Football Club, which was formed in 1936 and played in the East Kent Amateur League (now the Kent County League), took over use of the Cheriton Road ground in early 1991 after the demise of the old Folkestone club who had enjoyed a long history in the Southern League.

Invicta achieved senior status and joined Division One of the Winstonlead Kent League, making steady progress in its first two seasons at this level under club stalwart Staniforth. The nearest the club came to another trophy during these two seasons was when they lost the 1994 Plaaya Kent Senior Trophy Final 3-1 against Alma Swanley at Gravesend & Northfleet’s Stonebridge Road. Former Folkestone, Dover Athletic, Hythe Town, Crawley Town and Sittingbourne player Tim Hulme then took over as playermanager for the 1994-95 season. Invicta at one point chased the Kent League treble that season, but ended up empty handed. The club were runners up for a second successive season in the Plaaya Kent Senior Trophy after losing a penalty shoot out in the final against Deal Town at Dover’s Crabble ground following a 2-2 draw after extra time. Invicta entered the F. A. Cup for the first time during the 199495 season, beating Hailsham Town and then Southern League Premier Division side Sittingbourne before going out 2-1 at home to a Worthing side which included former Tottenham striker Mark Falco. Hopes were high for the 1995-96 season as Invicta strengthened their squad, but things turned sour during the second half of the season as Hulme left the club, with his assistant Micky Dix taking over for the remainder of the season. Former Canterbury City boss Darren Hare was recruited for the 1996-97 season, but after a poor start he was soon replaced by one-time Folkestone Town manager Dennis Hunt, assisted by veteran player Bobby Wilson. It was during this season that a club record 2,332 saw the club play hosts to West Ham United in a benefit game following freak floods in the town. A strong West Ham side included Portuguese World Cup star Paolo Futre, Julian Dicks, Frank Lampard and Stan Lazaridis. It was the arrival of manager Neil Cugley from Ashford Town during the summer of 1997 which was to provide the catalyst for the return of Southern League football to the town.Cugley made an immediate impact as promotion was achieved by finishing runners up to Herne Bay in 1997-98 when the club also finished runners up in the Plaaya Kent Senior Trophy for the third time after losing 1-0 in the final to Greenwich Borough at Ashford Town’s Homelands ground.But under manager Cugley the club were to be permanent fixtures in

The 1999-2000 season saw the club achieve more progress with promotion to the Dr. Martens League Premier Division as runners up to Fisher Athletic (London) in the Eastern Division. Again there was final day heartbreak for Invicta as the championship went right to the wire with Fisher winning awayto Newport (Isle of Wight) to make Invicta’s final day win at Wisbech in vein. Invicta went down 1-0 at home to holders and eventual winners Kingstonian in the F.A. Umbro Trophy and again reached the Kent Senior Cup Final, but went down again, this time 3-0 to Gravesend & Northfleet, their fifth successive defeat in a cup final as a senior side. It was a good season all round for the club as the reserves won the Kent Intermediate Cup and the youth team won their section of the MUSH Kent Youth League and reached the 2nd Round of the Times Sponsored F. A. Youth Cup before bowing out 6-0 against a strong Millwall side at the New Den The 2000-01 season saw the club compete in the Dr Martens League Premier Division for the first time and Invicta achieved their objective of staying up. In the process they were the only side to win away to Nigel Clough’s Burton Albion at Eton Park. The 2001-02 season saw an improved Invicta side briefly top the Premier Division table for the first time in the club’s history during the opening weeks of the season. The club reached the 4th Qualifying Round of the F. A. Cup but were beaten 5-1 in a replay away to Welling United after drawing the initial tie 1-1 with a lucrative trip to Reading as the prize. The season ended on a dramatic note as Invicta 3-3 home draw with Tamworth on the final day of the season denied the Lambs the championship – that game was watched by a crowd of 1,277, the highest ever home attendance for an Invicta league match. That record was broken in August 2002 when the visit of neighbours Dover Athletic attracted a crowd of 1,446 to Cheriton Road. But the 2002-03 season was to prove a difficult season for Invicta as financial constraints took their toll. The club finished bottom of the table and was relegated back down to the Eastern Division. The 2003-04 season was more successful for Invicta as the club finished fifth in the Eastern Division to win promotion via the re-structuring of the non-league game. Folkestone Invicta FC History (cont.) out at home to Nationwide Conference club Stevenage Borough. The club switched from the Southern League to the Ryman (Isthmian) Premier League for the 2004-05 season and finished in a mid table position. Striker James Dryden broke both the club’s record senior appearance and goalscoring records during the season and a new home league record attendance of 2,278 saw Invicta win 1-0 at home to local rivals Dover Athletic over Christmas. A 2,390 crowd saw Invicta win the return 1-0 over the Easter weekend. But the club was to suffer real tragedy on Tuesday April 12th, 2005 when striker Paul Sykes collapsed on the pitch and died during a Kent Senior Cup semi final against one of his former clubs Margate. Invicta subsequently pulled out of the competition to allow Margate to play another of Paul’s former clubs Dover Athletic in the final at Folkestone when the Kent footballing community came together to remember one of its most popular characters. Some of the many flowers at the ground following the tragic passing of striker Paul Sykes in 2005. Folkestone Invicta went into the 2005-06 season in good spirits with a new sponsorship deal with local coach company Buzzlines which resulted in the ground being re-named the Buzzlines Stadium. The club subsequently enjoyed its best ever run in the F. A. Cup, going down 2-1 away to Chester City in the First Round after leading 1-0 at half time thanks to an early Adam Flanagan goal which was shown on Match of the Day. The reserves also finished as champions of the Kentish Observer Football League Division Two and the club also enjoyed great success at youth level. The 2006-07 season saw the club maintain its Ryman Premier League status on the final day of the season with a 1-1 draw away to Carshalton. But last season was to see the club relegated on the final day of the season with a 1-0 home defeat against Maidstone United in a winner-takes-all encounter. 2008-09 saw the club in the Ryman League Division One South but a financial crisis put paid to early season hopes of promotion and the club put its faith in a predominantly young, local, up-and-coming side. That faith came to fruition during a truly remarkable 2009-10 season that saw the club win promotion from the Ryman League Division One South and reach the final of the Kent Senior Cup (losing 3-1 to Sittingbourne). Operating with a small squad, Invicta were denied the championship after being docked ten points for entering into a CVA agreement but were promoted via the play-offs. Croydon Athletic clinched the championship with a 0-0 draw on a memorable night at Invicta after both towns had paid tribute to Rifleman Peter Aldridge of A Company 4 Rifles, who had died in an explosion in Afghanistan, aged just 19, becoming the 250th UK serviceman to die in the campaign. New Invicta chairman Lynn Woods’ efforts in staging the commemoration were rewarded with a 2,134 crowd. Invicta – who conceded just 23 goals in 42 league games – recovered from the disappointment of missing out on the title by winning the play-offs. A thrilling semi final saw the club come back from 2-0 down at half time against Leatherhead

to force a 2-2 draw after extra time and win 5-3 on penalties. Godalming Town were then beaten in the final as Invicta returned to the Ryman Premier League. 2010-11 saw the club relegated back to the Ryman League Division One South after finishing the season in 22nd position. Generally speaking, seasons 2011/12 and 2012/13 have been fairly similar, on the face of it. Each time, Invicta finished fifth in the table but lost in the semi-final play-offs away from home, firstly to Dulwich Hamlet (3-1) and more recently to our Kent rivals Maidstone United (1-0). Fifth place, of course, means that you face the runners up in the table, arguably, and often, the strongest side in the end of season shake-up. The summer of 2011 had seen the arrival of Stuart King, a previous Kent League Golden Boot winner and the prolific striker has been a key figure at Invicta ever since. Both he and strike partner James (Ratty) Everitt figured prominently in the leading scorers list for Ryman One South with King’s eventual 27 goals (in 27 games) in his first full season at that level earning him a share of the R1S Golden Boot alongside Bognor Regis’s much-vaunted hitman, Jason Prior. 2011/12 was an enjoyable season when Folkestone fully avenged an early season (home) FA Cup defeat at the hands of newcomers Whitehawk by completing a league double over Brighton club who were - eventually – the runaway champions. Added to that, Neil Cugley’s side shared the points on each occasion with the other promoted side, Bognor Regis Town, drawing 2-2 both home and away. Their Achilles heel proved to be Dulwich Hamlet who, having never beaten Folkestone before that season, did the double over them in the league and also won the play-off semi-final on a bright sunny evening at Champion Hill. But Stuart King started the 2012/13 season with a hat-trick away at Chipstead having ended the previous campaign with a treble on the same ground. Invicta’s fine start – and King’s goals - shot them to the top of the table very early on, and it was not till they visited Dulwich (again!!) that their unbeaten start to the season came to an end. Top scorer King already had 17 more goals for the club when finances forced his sale to Maidstone in late November 2012 (where he helped the ambitious Stones gain promotion, at Invicta’s expense, through the play-offs). Three more experienced players were to leave Cheriton Road before the end of 2012 to help reduce the wage bill, but thanks to youngsters like Richard Atkins, Nat Blanks, Phil Stevenson and Johan Ter Horst – all products of Invicta’s youth section – Folkestone enjoyed an excellent second half of the campaign and again reached the play-offs thanks to Ter Horst’s fine strike in 1-0 home win over Herne Bay. Though still struggling against Dulwich – this time the eventual champions – Invicta had again done well against the eventual runners-up, Maidstone, drawing 2-2 home and away before going out of the play-offs in front of a crowd of more than 2,000 at the Gallagher Stadium on the last day of April.Stuart King’s return to Invicta during the close season sparked a great deal of optimism for the 2013/14 campaign with a couple more name signings also brought in by boss Neil Cugley for the start of his 17th season in charge at the newly-renamed Fullicks Stadium.

WE’VE all been there. Your parents are away for the week, the house is free and your pals are applying the pressure to crack open the doors and put on a party to be proud of. Suddenly you’re the most popular kid in town.

Playing to double figure crowds at best in the Midland Football Combination, this was not your usual Step 5 match. The best part of a thousand people turned up, around nine times their average. It took deep planning from the club’s small committee.

The drinks are flowing and all of a sudden your attention is diverted from picking up wine-soaked shards of glass from behind the TV unit. Someone is acting up, whilst swigging down your dad’s Glenfiddich. And people are starting to get annoyed.

There was a sense of excitement, too. Attracting new sponsors, and new fans that could be lured back they like what they saw.

Then it hits you. ‘Hold on, I have absolutely no idea who that is’. Those that witnessed the horrendous acts of violence that ruined last weekend’s FA Cup tie between Atherstone Town and Barrow (pictured below) know all about uninvited and unwelcome guests. Flags burned, punches thrown, women and children screaming with visiting players physically attacked. It stained the day. But it mustn’t taint people’s view of a club.

Sadly, some knuckleheads came along for the ride too. The sensible money would be on this group never having been to the Adders’ Sheepy Road before. A similar tale whenever a smaller club makes the headlines for the wrong reason. It’s a problem we’ve seen so many times before. Idiots like attaching themselves to big days, taking the opportunity to cause chaos and run a mock in a competition where they know they can get people talking about them. In short, attention seeking at its finest. Atherstone chairman Robert Weale was close to tears in the aftermath, fearing the mark these mindless troublemakers will leave on his precious club and its reputation. Mud, as they say, sticks. We can do him and all that have been on the wrong end of such hooliganism a service by remembering that they are victims, too. Don’t judge a club by the pondlife that occasionally inhabit it.

Jason Turley

Danny started his career at Sutton United playing in their youth set up. He then moved onto Tooting progressing to the 1st team squad before being signed at the start of the 2010/2011 season. Danny is now established as 1st team goalkeeper after a serious injury kept him out the year before. A penalty saving specialist, Danny went on to win all of the End of Season awards after some fine performances.

Attacking full back who gets forward whenever possible. Scored a screamer in Casuals’ 2-1 win over AFC Wimbledon. Tom joined the club in 2010 from Leatherhead after progressing through their youth and reserve teams. Tom is hoping for an injury free season, which hampered last year’s campaign.

Joe Hicks

Now in his third season at the club after joining from Kingstonian. Joe is a solid centre back with great ball control skills. Previous clubs include Walton and Hersham. The 22 year old defender has had interest in the past from other clubs but remains faithful to the Casuals.

Danny Dudley

Signed for the Casuals last year and immediately thrust into the first team, Danny was instrumental in the outstanding defensive record attained in the latter half of the season. Can play both right back and centre back. Previous clubs include Chipstead and Whyteleafe.

Meddie Nsubuga

A former Ugandan under-23 international, Meddie is an experienced, tough tackling player who can play in defence or central midfield. Meddie has also played for Carshalton Athletic, Hampton & Richmond Borough, Staines Town and Slough.

Ross Defoe

Midfielder / Striker who broke into the first team last season after working his way through the reserves. Previously at Molesey and Epsom & Ewell. When on form he is the most skillful player at the club.

Dave came to pre-season trials in July 2010 and after some reserve matches progressed to 1st team duty. What he failed to mention to anyone was that he played for Glossop North End in the 2009 FA Vase final at Wembley and was also their leading scorer! Dave has now made over 100 appearances for the club. His versatility makes him comfortable anywhere down the left side. Loves politics!

Club captain: Jason is a tough tackling midfielder whose experience is invaluable to the younger members of the squad. Previous clubs include Kingstonian, Carshalton Athletic, Hampton & Richmond, Tooting and Dulwich Hamlet.

Ellis Wilson-Joseph

New signing this season, joining us from Ryman South champions Dulwich Hamlet. Ellis is strong and comfortable on the ball and is a great addition to the team. Other previous clubs include Tooting & Mitcham and Fisher FC.

Daniel Green

A 27 year old former Chelsea trainee, Danny started as a striker but has now turned creator in midfield. Danny is one of the longest serving members of the team playing over ¬¬150 games and is a former club player of the year. Previous clubs include Walton & Hersham. Prolific tweeter!

Joel Thompson

A hard working forward who had been with the club a number of years, breaking through from the reserve team. Prolific in his first season, Joel capped it off by scoring the second goal in the club´s Surrey Cup final victory three seasons ago. Has the strangest song sung about him by the fans.

Prince Ofori

Broke through to the first team squad towards the end of last season after performing well with the reserves. Prince is adept at playing either in defence or midfield.

Jamie Byatt

Known as “Busy” Jamie is a fans favourite down at King George’s Arena. Has bagged over 50 goals in his two spells at Casuals. A massive impact in his first Tolworth spell saw this pacey 31 year old signed by Croydon Athletic, Tooting & Mitcham and latterly Kingstonian and Merstham.

Jake Wilgoss

A 22 year old who’s joined us from Chipstead where he made his way through the youthteam, reserves and into the first XI. Has trialled for England schoolboys.

Mario Quiassaca

The 20 year-old Mario is a lively centre forward who is in his first season at the club. A promising graduate from Staines Town Academy, Mario has also played for Walton & Hersham.

Andre Taiwo

Another new recruit to the Casuals this season, Andre is an exciting 23 yearold Anglo-Nigerian striker with bags of promise. Formerly with Lewes, Hastings United, Leyton and Enfield 1893.

Juevan Spencer

Skillful winger now in his second season at the club. Has serious pedigree. Juevan was formerly on the books at AFC Wimbledon, Salisbury City and Whyteleafe. Best mates and former playing partner of Man Utd and England’s Wilifred Zaha.

Steve Barilli

A natural goalscorer, Steve joined us from Leatherhead. Was once part of AFC Wimbledon’s youth setup. Due to work commitments has not been a regular in the last few seasons.

Chris Watney

Veteran forward who has come back into the first team fold this season after a few years absence. Chris has notched up hundreds of appearances in his time at the club. He’s also the Co-founder of Red-Barrel Productions – who are currently producing a documentary about the Corinthians.

Ben Bowra

26 year old defender can play anywhere along the defensive line. Ben is a new addition to the club this season after joining us from fellow Ryman Division One South rivals Burgess Hill. Former clubs include Crawley Town, Worthing Peacehaven & Telscombe and New York Tech!

Management Team Kim Harris

Experienced manager who took over the first team reins two years ago after originally assisting Brian Adamson. His knowledge at this level has helped entice good players to the club. Kim has previously managed Kingstonian and Walton Casuals. In his playing days Kim played for the club.

Tony Davies

Assistant manager Tony has been at the club for 10 years, previously managing at the youth levels. He has helped out various 1st team managers during this time and also had success with the reserves in the 2011/2012 season before stepping up with Kim last season permanently.

Luke Garrard

First team coach in his third season at the club, Luke is a popular chap and a good link between the players and management. In his playing days he was a goalkeeper for Kingstonian, Tooting & Mitcham and Walton & Hersham amongst others.

Alan Winnett

Alan is a long serving member of the club having had involvement managing the reserves. His rewards for being goalkeeping coach saw both of his keepers win the end of season awards in 2013.

Carly Doyle

Physio who works hard getting the players back to full fitness, Carly graduated in Sports Rehab at St Mary’s in 2006 and was at Met Police before joining us here at Casuals. In her spare time Carly enjoys long distance running and has completed the London Marathon in just over 3 hours.

t’s probably one of the best jobs you could possibly have, if things are going well. In contrast to that, when things are not going to plan, it must be a chore to get some sleep at night and a real constant worry. Of course, I’m referring to the job of the football manager. As a fan, you couldn’t want for a better job than being involved in the day-to-day running of the football club you hold close to your heart and being paid for your services would be an added bonus. It’s when times are tough, both on and off the field that panic would set in – wondering if you’ll still have that job in a month or so. The job of football manager may have its appeal but when things get ugly, it’s probably one of the loneliest jobs in the world. Not only are the board putting the pressure on you, but the fans [who last season cheered your name] now want your head on a silver platter and a replacement for you ASAP. The head on a platter could well have been the case for the Bulgarian side Levski Sofia’s new boss Ivaylo Petev recently when the Levski fans took it upon themselves to give a public display of their contempt for their clubs’ choice of new boss. During the first press conference involving the new gaffa, the fans humiliated their new coach in front of the cameras by removing the team shirt from his back in defiance of his appointment. They then escorted him out of the press conference, probably with a few choice swear words along the way – and why? – because the Levski fans believed Petev to be a fan of their arch rivals CSKA Sofia! He should have known better really shouldn’t he? Petev, as you imagine, has since left the club. That’s probably the shortest reign for any football manager ever! However, Leroy Rosenior’s reign as Torquay United’s boss back in 2007 was quite shortlived. He held the post for a matter of minutes as the club was in the process of being taken over by a consortium. The chairman gave him the job initially but the new owners didn’t want Rosenior as gaffer so he was subsequently fired within minutes of taking over due to the take-over! It’s a tough job and broad shoulders should be one

of the criteria required if that’s the path you choose in life. The Harry Redknapp comments about Roy Hodgson’s suitability as England manager provided great fodder for the media to make a meal of. We’ve also recently seen the controversial Gus Poyet return to management at Sunderland following his ‘grey cloud’ Brighton sacking last term. Who ultimately decides the fate of the football manager? The Chairmen, the board, and sometimes the fans play a part? However, it does seem that the media are the key players in the demise of the top clubs’ bosses. You only have to read the papers to see the book makers’ odds appearing on the sports pages on “who goes next”. The current favourite within the Premier League to ‘bite-the-bullet’ is Ian Holloway at Crystal Palace. Perhaps by the time you read this, he, along with probably a host of other football managers are now unemployed. It’s the nature of the job I guess. The likes of Ian Holloway may feel under pressure and aggrieved by their current situation but they should take a look further down the pyramid and put themselves in the shoes of Dorchester Town boss Phil Simkin, who at the age of 60, recently considered registering himself as a player in their game against Dover because of the club’s cash problems and their need to put the entire team up for sale in order to reduce the wage bill by 50%. A meeting was held at Jackson’s offices in London’s Paternoster Row, thus was the club born. The name came from a suggestion by England international, H.A. Swepstowe, which was accepted unanimously. In the recently published history of the club, “Play Up Corinth,” author Rob Cavallini explains “the most likely explanation for this choice ... is the word’s long forgotten meaning - ‘man of fashion and pleasure,’ which captures the whole essence of the playing membership and their sporting ideology.” Merely four years later, there were nine Corinthians in the England team that drew 1-1 with Scotland. Between 1883 and 1890, 52 of the 88 caps awarded against Scotland went to Corinthian players. Corinthians fielded the full England side twice in 1894 and 1895, both matches against Wales, a 5-1 victory and 1-1 draw respectively.

The Casuals were formed in 1883; The

Casuals’ FA Cup performances sadly lacked the legendary drama of the Corinthians, and in 1890/91, having never got past the 1st round, they conceded 13 goals to Aston Villa. The next year Stoke won 3-0, and a year

later, Nottingham Forest triumphed 4-0. The Casuals, probably rather wisely, rarely entered the competition again. The club did, however, make a lasting impression on the FA Amateur Cup’s history by reaching the inaugural final in 1894, Old Carthusians winning 2-1 at Richmond. They won jointly the London Senior Cup, in 1886/87, after drawing with Old Westminsters, and were runners-up another five times. The London Charity Cup was also won a total of six times in this early period. The FA Amateur Cup was finally won in 1936, the club’s greatest achievement, when they beat Ilford 2-0 in a replay at Upton Park, following a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace. The team were also Isthmian League runners up that year. Three years later came the historic merger with the Corinthians.

Corinthian-Casuals Football Club had played only one game when World War II broke out, though it really wasn’t our fault. Come the recommencement of football in 1945, the club proudly retook its place in the Isthmian League, were it would remain for another 39 years. In 1954, the club beat Epsom 2-0 to win the Surrey Senior Cup. Two years later in 1956, they reached the FA Amateur Cup Final, drawing 1-1 with Bishop Auckland at a packed Wembley Stadium. The neolegendary north-eastern club won the replay at Middlesbrough 4-1. A year later, another good run in the FA Amateur Cup saw the club reach the semi-final. After this high point, the club slipped into a long decline, a rare moment of success seeing them reach the FA Cup 1st Round in 1965/66, where Watford won 5-1.
