Learning from the pros

Whether it’s on the slopes or in deep snow off-piste – it’s definitely easier with the right skiing technique. Whether it’s with private lessons or on a ski course – the highly trained ski instructors from the Stubai ski schools will show you how it’s done.

Six ski schools in the Stubai Valley are available to provide helpful support to winter sports enthusiasts on the slope. Their offer is comprehensive and ranges from alpine skiing via snowboarding, crosscountry skiing, telemark skiing, ski routing and freestyle skiing to current trend sports. In addition to learning and perfecting technique in the different levels of ability, the joy of winter sports and exercise in natural alpine surroundings is the primary focus.

SKI COURSE AND PRIVATE LESSONS

Fun and games and learning to ski at the same time – what sounds easy needs superbly trained ski instructors and a lot of experience. Children should learn to ski from professionals. What’s good for the little ones can’t be completely wrong for the grown-ups either. Because adults don’t just learn the right skiing technique during a ski course, they also explore the ski area in sociable company. And, the instructors also point out alpine dangers that one might otherwise have paid little attention to. This is equally important for beginners and professionals. In private lessons, the ski instructors respond individually to their guests and pay attention to the correct skiing technique or style. Anyone who has not been on skis for a long time can refresh their knowledge and adapt it to modern skiing techniques in a relatively short time. This gives you a sense of security and self-confidence on the slopes again. Many people want to spend their holidays with the whole family. This means that family lessons are also becoming increasingly popular. This way, parents and children can learn to ski or snowboard together. The ski instructors cater to the family members’ different abilities.

SKI GUIDING

Ski guiding is not about learning, but about the skiing experience. Whether it’s on the Stubai Glacier, Schlick 2000, Elfer or Serlesbahnen – each of the Stubai ski areas has its own special features to explore. Of course, this is done best with someone who really knows the area like the back of their hand. The experienced ski instructors from the Stubai are very familiar with the four ski areas and know where to find the most beautiful or also the most challenging slopes and deep powder snow off-piste.

NEWS FROM THE SKI SCHOOLS

We asked the Stubai ski schools what their priorities are for winter 2021/22.

‘Skischule Fulpmes Stubai Tirol’ has a new ski school director in Christian Ilmer as of this winter. The experienced ski instructor, ski guide, snowboard and cross-country instructor is a founding member of the ski school, which has been active since 1998. One focus is on childcare. Children as young as one year old are looked after at BIG Ron’s Kindernestl. From the age of three, they learn to ski in the kids’ courses in its own children’s area. Skischule Fulpmes Stubai Tirol’s weekly highlight is the spectacular ‘Night of Colours’ ski show. Every Wednesday evening, the ski instructors show off their skills in the snow with lots of acrobatics and humour at the Froneben middle station (Schlick 2000). ‘Skischule Neustift Stubaier Gletscher’ also has a new director in Martin Ofer. Martin has been part of the ‘red family’ for 20 years and has led the children’s area for twelve years. Enjoying and relaxing in the snow is one of the big trends in winter, Martin is convinced: “Our guided winter hikes and snowshoe tours are becoming increasingly popular. Guests want to experience nature in the Stubai Valley up close and intensively.” When it comes to skiing, individual lessons with a private ski instructor are very popular. Kids from the age of four and teens, on the other hand, like to ski in groups with their peers and make their first attempts at skiing in the spacious Kinderland.

At ‘Skischule Neustift Olympia’, course participants get everything from one source with the ‘All in one’ package – in addition to the ski course, hire equipment (skis, boots & poles or snowboard & boots + helmet) is also included for seven days. “Many people want flexible course times from us”, ski school director Albin Knoflach knows from many conversations. That’s why the course times are entirely geared to the guests. For example, advanced skiers can start skiing lessons on any day. “For those who want to take a break for a day in between, there are ski course rates, similar to ski passes, for say 3 in 5 days, 4 in 6 days or 5 in 7 days”, Albin reports.

The ‘Neustifter Skilehrer’ is not a ski school in the conventional sense, but an association of exclusively local, independent state-certified ski instructors and ski guides. The offer is limited to private lessons for adults and families. Flexibility is its great strength. Courses can be pre-booked easily by phone or email. With the Neustifter Skilehrer there are no set course times and in which Stubai ski area the lessons take place can be arranged at short notice, depending on the current conditions. “As ultimately, the mountain sets the programme, especially for off-piste activities”, explains Robert Span from the Neustifter Skilehrer.

The ‘Alpin Schischule Neustift’ focuses on private lessons for adults and families in addition to small groups in children’s lessons. “Guests feel more secure with a competent ski instructor at their side. In family lessons, the ski instructor makes sure that everyone feels comfortable, at approximately the same level of ability”, explains ski school director Robert ‘Gustl’ Schlaucher. Another focus is on training ski racers. “At the racing school, skiers who are technically proficient and have sporting ambitions can complete an intensive training programme that is tailored to them”, says Gustl. Race training is offered in both group and individual lessons.

‘Schischule Fulpmes’ focuses on private lessons for adults and children from the age of seven. “Children in particular usually make great progress in a very short time with a private ski or snowboard instructor”, ski school director Kurt Hupfauf knows from experience. Whether beginner or advanced, many guests at Schischule Fulpmes are on the slopes in the Stubai Valley with their ski instructor for the whole week. “With one day of private lessons or more, guests receive hire skis from us free of charge on request”, explains Kurt.
