GUIDE AARHUS UNIVERSITY 2012-2013

EDITORIAL Dear fellow students! Welcome to Aarhus University and your new life as a student. A life which gives you the special opportunity to dive into exactly that which interests you – and the opportunity of getting to know a bunch of student friends with the same academic interest. But life as a student is not just long hours in the study hall with the nose deeply buried in endless amounts of curriculum pages, lectures where you in your notes fight to keep up with the monotonous chanting of the lecturer and exam periods, where sunshine and fresh air is a theoretical concept… All the academic nerding about is simply one part of life as a student. You will soon experience how the university is buzzing with Friday bars, lecture unions, course councils, sports clubs and so much else. Also, Aarhus is a real student city, where we students represent a very large part of the population. This means lots of places with student discounts and special offers for students. Here in the handbook, you find interviews, information, quirky stories and guided trips. You can read about anything: little cafés, great concert spots and the green oases of the city, opportunities for a student job, student unions and of course night life and Friday bars. You can also read about the many things you can get involved with, while you are studying. Maybe the best piece 4

of advice, I can give you, is that you should make sure to get involved. It could be in the local party planning committee, the student sports club, the lecture union or in your local course council. You will experience that your network will expand rapidly to students of all year classes, and entirely new sides of the university will reveal themselves to you. In the back of the handbook, you can read about the Student Council (Studenterrådet). Apart from this handbook, we are also behind the Student Fair and Denmark’s Largest Friday Bar and Sports Day. Events organized by students for students, in order to make your start at university easier and more fun. But the Student Council is much more than that; we are the collective voice of the students in relation to the university, the municipality and the politicians at Danish Parliament. If a problem shows itself during your time studying, I will hereby encourage you to contact the Student Council. We are here for you and your fellow students, because we believe that together we are stronger! Good luck with your studies,

Per Dalbjerg President of the Student Council

AARHUS

WELCOME TO THE WORLDS SMALLEST METROPOLIS! Aarhus is often called the world’s smallest metropolis. The city has everything a metropolis should have, yet everything is within reach. A special feature of Aarhus is the sense of community that characterizes the city, both because there are so many students in one place, but also because the city is very multicultural.

You will experience a smiling city, where people are very friendly and love meeting new people. Aarhus is also called Denmark’s youngest city. Every tenth inhabitant (out of more than 300,000 people) is a student at one of Aarhus’ many educational institutions. This adds a special atmosphere, and city life is something to be experienced.

AARHUS’ DIVERSITY

Despite its size, Aarhus is known to be multicultural and versatile. This shows in the many different neighborhoods, you find around town, but especially also in the many different events held in and around Aarhus. The individual parts and neighbourhoods seem very different, but precisely because of the city’s size, you will get to experience a closeness and a unity that is truly unique. Special parts of the city particularly includes Strøget that you may already have become acquainted with. Strøget offers a great variety of shops and is a must for a true ”shopaholic.” The Latin Quarter, located behind the cathedral, also offers an excellent day of shopping. It is the oldest neighbourhood and one of the trendiest places in Aarhus, especially when it comes to fashion and design boutiques and quirky and cozy cafes. Vadestedet, situated along the river, is the focal point for several of the city’s nightclubs and cafés. They are placed side by side and function as Aarhus’ version of a beach promenade. Frederiksbjerg is the place to be on Wednesdays and Saturdays when it is market day on Ingerslev Boulevard. There, you can buy flowers, plants, fruit and vegetables and various kinds of handicrafts. The Øgade neighbourhood is good for a walk. It is hilly and has cobbled streets with nice old houses, and in contrast to the noisy city center, calm and coziness reigns here. 10

GREEN AARHUS

The University Park

Aarhus is a city with many parks and green spots, and if you like scenic jogging or walking, there are plenty of options. Among other things, we have the botanical garden, Marselisborg Memorial Park - and of course, the university park - just to name a few. The Botanical Garden is one of Aarhus’ largest, oldest parks and a really nice place - especially during summer, where you bring your own barbeque and have a picnic in the park. The park also has more than 6000 plants, so it is definitely worth a visit for people with a green thumb.

Marselisborg Memorial Park is located between Aarhus Bay and Marselisborg Castle. Here, you find abundant opportunities for relaxation, exercise and cultural history, for example in the form of Marselisborg Castle. Another park you probably already know is the university park, which is the natural location for annual events such as the regatta (Kapsejlads) and Denmark’s Largest Friday Bar and Sports Day.

VISIT THE WORLD’S SEVENTH BEST BEACH - RIGHT HERE IN AARHUS!

Den permanente - One of the many beaches near Aarhus

As a new student, you are probably already overwhelmed with all the reading, you have to do in the coming years. Therefore, it is important to make time for relaxation, which is a great opportunity to go to one of the beaches. If you are the kind of person, who likes to relax in the sun, then Bellevue, Den Permanente or Ballehage is your thing. Especially Den Permanente is very popular among young people, and it 12

takes just 10 minutes to bike here from the city centre. If, on the other hand, you are the more active type, you find good opportunities at Moesgaard Beach or Åkrogen. Here, you can for example try your windsurfing skills - and by the way, this beach is named the world’s seventh best.

// AARHUS Whatever you are into, there are plenty of opportunities here in Aarhus. In The Student Guide, we give you tips and suggestions for the many experiences that Aarhus has to offer, so you can also feel welcome in the City of Smiles.

AARHUS AND SPORTS There are lots of alternatives for you, if you are looking for different challenges, than the ones provided by the somewhat monotonous fitness centres. A common interest in the same sport often gives a strong sense of unity, and Aarhus has loads of fairly untraditional clubs. Aarhus Crossfit Aarhus Crossfit is located by the docks. The intensity of the workout is high, but so is the benefit. The focus is on the entire body and the workouts run for 15-20 minutes at the highest possible intensity. The club offers free trial workouts as well as a student discount. For further information see www.aarhuscrossfit.dk Aarhus Crossfit

LECTURES AND COURSES Sometimes it can be inspirational to learn about other topics, than the ones you hear about on a daily basis, or even just to get a different spin on them. Both the FOF and the Danish University Extension (Folkeuniversitetet) offers lectures and courses throughout the semester on every conceivable topic. Annemarie Birkedal Andersen studies communication at BSS and has used the Danish University Extension to obtain further knowledge about more psychological branches of her programme, as well as to test her interest in positive psychology. She says about the course: ”It has given me an insight into the world of psychology within the realm of positive emotions, but it has also given me a greater affirmation, that my interest lies within the internal aspect of communication”.

The Danish University Extension may also provide a place to nurture some of your personal interests that you do not hear about on a daily basis. Alternative ways to lecture, such as Pecha Kucha and Creative Mornings, have now also found their way to Aarhus. Briefly put, Pecha Kucha is a way for entrepreneurs and other passionate souls to tell about their projects through images, within a format of 20 slides of 20 seconds. In one night, you can therefore expand your knowledge about any conceivable topic. Creative Mornings hosted their first breakfast meeting in January 2012. Here you will get a free breakfast, while listening to one of the creative minds in Aarhus. If you “Like” Creative Mornings on Facebook you can stay updated and ready to sign up for the upcoming event.

CULTURE Aarhus has a wide variety of cultural offers, which makes it a wonderful place to live. This applies to everything from museums and art, to theatre, music and comedy.

MUSEUMS One of the most obvious museums to pay a visit is Aarhus art museum ARoS, with the very beautiful rainbow, Your rainbow Panorama, which has become one of the newest landmarks of the city. We would also like to recommend The Aarhus Art Building (Kunstbygningen), which holds contemporary art and is situated close to both ARoS and The Old Town (Den Gamle By), which oozes of Danish history. Furthermore there is the Women’s Museum, which is the only one of its kind in Denmark and Moesgaard Museum, housing the Grauballe Man. ARoS

MUSEUM PRICES The above-mentioned sights have the following student entrance fees: ARoS: DKK 80

The Women’s Museum: DKK 35

The Aarhus Art Building: DKK 25

Moesgaard Museum: DKK 50

Concert at Train

MUSIC If you are interested in music, the city has lots of live music venues Train often provides live music and is both a music venue and a club. For further information about forthcoming events see www.train.dk Otherwise you can go to some of the city’s other venues such as Voxhall, Atlas, Radar or Fatter Eskil. Genre wise, Voxhall and Atlas primarily focus on rock, heavy and jazz. Visit their joint website for more information: www.fondenvoxhall.dk.

28

Radar was formerly known as Musikcafeen and is now located at The Freight Yard’s premises. For further information see www.radarlive.dk. If you prefer the more intimate musical experiences, you should go to Fatter Eskil. Check out their programme at www.fattereskil.dk

Aktuelle koncerter i Aarhus kan findes på: www.gaffa.dk/live

COMEDY Four days a weak, four different cafées in Aarhus have an Open Mic Night, where you can go to se comedy performed by upcoming stand-up comedians free of charge. On Mondays, the event takes places at Café Jorden at 8pm, on Tuesdays at Café Smagløs at 8.45pm on Wednesdays at Slabberas at 8pm and on Thursdays in Thorups

kælder at 8pm. It is also a good idea to check out the Facebook page “Standup comedy Århus”, which will keep you regularly updated about comedy events in Aarhus.

Studenterhus Aarhus hosts the Danish Open in Stand up every year, which is the largest Danish stand up competition outside of Copenhagen.

OTHER SUGGESTIONS The cinema Øst for Paradis is no ordinary cinema. It is an older theatre that shows slightly more offbeat and different films than the ones usually showing in Biocity and Cinemaxx. The name Øst for Paradis (East of Eden) is inspired by the location in Paradisgade in the Latin Quarter, and also by the first-ever showing which was the film “Øst for Paradis”. Check out the cinema at www.paradisbio.dk or visit their Facebook page “Øst for Paradis” If you have not previously gone to see Sculpture by the Sea in Aarhus, you should look forward to 2013, where the exhibition once again comes to town. And do yourself the favour of going to see it. The exhibition, which is free of charge, runs from the 1st till the 30th of June and is located alongside the coastline, beginning at Tangkrogen. Aarhus is a candidate for the European Capital of Culture 2017, which will most likely entail even more cultural initiatives over the coming years, so hopefully there will be something to look forward to, if you are interested in culture.

Aarhus Theatre

GALLERIES

THEATRE

A good alternative or supplement to the many museums is all the galleries in Aarhus. Many of them are located in the Latin Quarter of the city. Vestergade in particular has a lot of small and cosy galleries with alternating exhibitions. Some of the ones worth mentioning are Lunchmoney Gallery, Galleri V58 and Gallery Image. The wonderful thing about the galleries is that unlike the museums, they are free of charge, so it is a very economic way to be cultural.

There are also lots of opportunities to go to the theatre in Aarhus. The Aarhus Theatre (Aarhus Teater) and The Music House (Musikhuset) are among the venues that have the most shows. However, there are also several smaller theatres e.g. Svalegangen, where you can go to the theatre for only DKK95 as a student.

SHOPPING A wise man once said, ”to shop is to live”, or something along those lines. Either way, a student guide to Aarhus would definitely not be complete without a section about shopping. In the following, we will therefore present a small selection of the many shopping opportunities Aarhus has to offer. Aarhus obviously has many other wonderful shops than the ones chosen here, and due to the city’s relatively small size, you will soon find your own favourites. Happy shopping!

CLOTHING STORES In the following, we have selected a few of the clothing stores in Aarhus, ranging from the cheapest second hand spots to the somewhat more expensive end of the scale.

SECOND HAND

HIGH STREET

At the lower end of the scale, you find the city’s vintage and second hand stores. Here you can find a retro bargain, and the clothes have been carefully selected, which also shows in the price. A good place to start is the store called “Dengang”, which is situated in the city’s Latin Quarter, at the address Graven 24. You might also want to go to Nørre Alle 17, where you will find “So Ein Ding”. If you have the patience for it, you can often find very nice things in the slightly cheaper second hand stores such as The Salvation Army (Frelsens Hær Genbrug) on Nørregade or the Blue Cross (Blå Kors Genbrug) behind Storcenter Nord.

The high street stores provide us with the opportunity to update our wardrobe in accordance with the new trends, without having to go on a diet consisting solely of oatmeal and pasta with ketchup. Aarhus has a wide selection, and all you have to do to satisfy your shopping desires is to take a stroll down the main street (Strøget). One store that we need to emphasise is H&M Clemensborg. In the women’s department you can find the brand H&M Trend, which has fashionable products at affordable prices, and in a slightly better quality than the rest of the H&M.

The second hand shop: So Ein Ding

THE HIGHER END As the headline implies, you can also find stores, where the price level is just a tad higher, but where you can still shop on a student budget. One store that we have to mention is Støy Munkholm, located on Store Torv 4, which has an excellent mix of brands for both men and women. The store is packed with the leading Scandinavian fashion brands, such as Stine Goya, Won Hundred and Acne, but also offers several foreign brands such as A.P.C. and Engineered Garments among many others. The store has a very friendly and service minded staff, so if your wallet allows it, it is definitely worth a visit.

Støy Munkholm

FOR YOUR HOME When your wardrobe has been restocked, it is time to decorate your home. Aarhus has something for everyone in terms of interior design. One store that is accessible on all budgets is Søstrene Grene, which is located on Strøget, as well as in the shopping centre Bruuns Galleri.

Another store worth mentioning is Decorate Shop. The store, which can be found on both Norsgade and Jægergårdgade, is packed with the trendiest items for your home. You are therefore unlikely to leave the store empty handed.

// STUDENT DISCOUNTS There is no reason for your student ID card to go to waste, when it can be used to get several discounts. Here is a list of selected stores in Aarhus, where you can get a student discount by showing your student ID: • Fashion on the third floor of Magasin, -10 % (Brands such as Topshop, Vila, Acne Jeans) • Oasis, second floor of Magasin, -10 % • Accessorize, Strøget, -15 % • Message, Strøget and Bruuns Galleri, -10 % •Stakbogladen, -10%

MARKETS AND FAIRS IN AARHUS

Market in Mølleparken

Nothing beats exploring the city’s markets and fairs with your fellow students, searching for hidden treasures and cheap bargains. Aarhus has a wide variety of markets and fairs, and you can find everything from old furniture, to second hand clothing and fresh vegetables. One of the newest initiatives, which is definitely worth a visit, is the flea market in Mølleparken. The host of the event is an organisation called Flagstang, and the dates of the market are announced continually, in order to ensure diversity among the stands. You can therefore find a variety of items at the market, and several times you may be lucky enough to find some of the city’s shop assistants selling off their own trendy wardrobes. Furthermore, you can buy a hotdog accompanied by a red soda, so do not miss out on a pleasant Sunday in Mølleparken. For further information check out the organisation’s Facebook page or sign up for the newsletter by sending an email to foreningenflagstang@gmail.com. 34

The market takes place on the first and third Sunday of every month from April till September. On the square, you will find approximately 150 hawkers selling everything from antique furniture for your flat to vintage finds for your wardrobe. The newspaper is written by the university’s communications department, and features news from management as well as articles and interesting debates. You will find the newspaper in stands located around the university and also in an electronic version at www.au.dk/univers. 38

USEFUL BOOKS FOR STUDYING

As a newcomer in the academic world you will, as a student, experience many expectations and challenges when writing a report. The requirements are higher, and the structure is probably different than what you have been used to before. Therefore, here are some tips for which books that will give you a good start in the new world.

The Little Brown Handbook, H. Ramsey Fowler and Jane E. Aaron. This book is especially good if your studies have special demands to following a specific reference system, e.g. APA or MLA. It is a good, basic reference book.

Writing at University: A guide for students, Phyllis Creme and Mary R. Lea. This is another good beginner’s book, which as the titles reveals is in English and good use to you if your programme is taught in English.

Even though the books mentioned here all have something to offer, it is still important that you check with your own programme, which textbooks they recommend. If you do not find something specific, you will certainly not go wrong by taking a closer look at these two suggestions.

STUDY BOOKS Each semester you must work your way through a copious curriculum and for this you need a lot of new study books. In Aarhus you can find plenty of opportunities to borrow books or buy cheap ones. The library at Aarhus University lets you take out a wide selection of books. The State and University Library with its distinctive book tower would be a great place to start. The library differs from other libraries in that the books are not freely accessible, but are stored in the book tower and below the ground. The shelves are closed and books should always be reserved through the website. The library also has a wide selection of journals and newspapers. On the web-

site you can become a registered user. As well as having the opportunity to take out books you will also gain access to several databases of electronic journals, e-books, encyclopaedias and dictionaries. In short, The State and University Library has all a student could wish for including friendly and qualified librarians. In addition to the State and University Library, Aarhus University has a number of institute libraries specialising in their own particular field. You can find more information on the institute libraries and where they are situated at:

Libraries in Aarhus In Aarhus you will find the Central Library (Hovedbiblioteket) at the address Møllegade 1, 8000 Aarhus C. You can also visit the 18 public libraries. You will find the library closest to your home on aakb. dk/biblioteker. Bibliotek.dk is a database of what you can find at the Danish public libraries. You can search for a book, choose which library the book is to be sent to and then you can go and collect it. Study books at the university Stakbogladen, situated below the Students’ House, is the academic bookshop of Aarhus University carrying a wide selection of both Danish and international literature within any subject area you can imagine. All prescribed books and compendiums are usually in stock so that you can always find the books that you need for your classes. They offer a 10 percent student discount, so do not forget to bring your student ID card. Stakbogladen also has a few small outlets e.g. at the department of mathematical sciences.

Used books You can quite often find cheap used study books in excellent condition. Keep an eye on the notice boards at your institute, here you will often find used books for sale. The second-hand bookshops around the city sell books you will not be able to find anywhere else and they are quite cheap. Thus, it might be worth it to browse through the dusty books. Many charity shops also sell incredible cheap books. If the thought of driving around the city on your bike looking for a book exhausts you, antikvariat.net is to be recommended. Second-hand bookshops from all over Scandinavia have collaborated on creating a large catalogue that has a great search engine. Here you will find both old first editions for the price of thousands of kroner as well as cheap paperbacks, so there is something for all. If you are looking for used international literature bookfinder.com would be a good place to start. The website has an incredible selection; however, it is not very easy to use.

READING TIPS Reading and studying on your own is a big part of life as a university student. The sometimes enormous amount of reading can be approached in many ways. Nobody has the same style of studying so do not be afraid to try out various methods. The Student Council provides you with a few tips on how to get through your reading in the best possible way.

READING ROOMS Not everyone is able to study at home. Perhaps your roommates are too noisy; perhaps you procrastinate by watching TV or doing the dishes. The reading rooms present you with the opportunity to get some work done in surroundings designed for that specific purpose. You should not underestimate the motivational factor of being surrounded by people who are also reading and studying. Every day hundreds of students study in the reading rooms around campus. You can use any of the reading rooms on campus, and not just the ones in your institute. If you need 24-hour access to the reading rooms of other institutes you will need to activate your student ID card at these institutes. Upon activation your student ID card will work as a key card and you will gain 24-hour access.

However, the reading room at the State and University Library (Statsbiblioteket) may only be used during the opening hours of the library. You are free to choose whichever reading room meets your needs.

Upon activation your student ID card will work as a key card and you will gain 24-hour access.

Study books online You can usually save a bit by buying your books online. Many online bookshops offer a student discount and sell their books cheaper than the academic bookshops. If you are looking for international literature you should try amazon.co.uk and play.com. These are large sites carrying an enormous selection of books in English. You should notice that you can buy from other sellers, sometimes even cheaper, by choosing the “used and new function. Here you can also find cheap used books, but remember to make sure that it is the correct edition. Using an older edition is rarely a problem, but the publishers do sometimes change the numbers of the exercises or the page numbers. 46

Studieliv Student life

All students ought to know Pensum.dk. The site compares the prices of a number of publishers while also letting you sell and buy used books online. This way, practically unused books are sold far below their initial price and buyers and sellers alike make a profit. Another great way of saving money is by making use of online freebies. Ventus.dk offers free compendiums for a number of subject areas, particularly in the areas of science and economics.

FIVE STEPS TOWARDS GOOD READING By: Cand.jur. Jens Birkmose

You will need to know more than your ABC’s in order to benefit from your reading. A good strategy for reading and learning requires you to focus, concentrate, have a good memory and energy, and for you to be able to learn without getting stressed in order for you to obtain the right body chemistry and longterm memory. Typically, the brain can only concentrate properly for 20 to 30 minutes after which it will need a quick break before carrying on. Flow or absorbing yourself in the task might prolong this period of concentration, but you should never push yourself too hard. Taking short breaks is key to improving concentration. Five steps for optimising your reading:

3. Start by making a note of the aim of the chapter you are to read. 4. Form a general view before reading. Using the index, the summary and a cursory reading of the chapter you will be able to decode the unifying principle and find the most important parts of the chapter. During this process you should make a note of 5 to 10 keywords to fasten your memory and reading upon. You will often find the best keywords in the index. 5. Now read. You should start by skimming and reading the chapter rapidly without analysing in debt or reading critically. The reading aims at you learning to reflect on the words that will aid your comprehension without actually saying all of the conjunctions to yourself.

1. Divide your reading into short but efficient periods and prioritise. 2. Relax both physically and mentally before beginning your reading, and look forward to it.

STUDY ABROAD For many people, university is the doorway to the land of opportunity. One of the many options is to go on exchange at a university abroad. Here, you can get another culture under your skin, get better at foreign languages and meet interesting people. And that is just three good reasons - there are many more! Af Laura Elgaard

UNDER FOREIGN SKIES About seizing the world and studying abroad In a world where everything is closer than you think, and where differences sometimes seem huge, studying abroad can open your eyes. Going on exchange for most people is a big decision, simply because of the extensive preparatory work that has to be done before you can settle in your new home. But although your experience will always be unique, there are others who have previously been on exchange and have been through the whole process. Most people would love to give advice and talk about their trip. One of them agreed to tell us about her experience. On one of the first spring days, I caught Rosa Christensen for a conversation about pulling up the tent pegs for one semester in order to plant them in Tampa, Florida, which for many people is relatively far from home. From smiling Aarhus to sunny Florida In the autumn of 2010 Rosa spent a semester at the University of South Florida, while she was working on her bachelor’s. She studied Marketing and Management Communication at Busi50

Studieliv Student life

ness and Social Sciences. A typical fear scenario for a number of people is being lonely during the exchange stay, but Rosa did not experience this: ”It was fantastically social. We were probably about 90 international students. There were many events and a great social life at university and therefore plenty of opportunities to be social. We ended up being around 30 international students, mainly Europeans, who hung out a lot. We still keep in touch and have reunions. One of the best parts about the entire stay is certainly the circle of friends I got out of it. It made the experience unforgettable.” Rosa was studying an English bachelor, so the very act of speaking English at school was easy for her. But to experience the teachers speak completely fluent English, to be surrounded by different cultures and meet so many fascinating people was something that really had an impact. She had chosen the courses herself, and found most of them very interesting. But there was one course, she

wishes she could have changed In this connection, she has a piece of advice for other exchange students: ”Maybe it is typically Danish to just give things a chance, but at my university you had to change courses within the first two weeks, if you wanted to at all. So I would recommend that you examine the range of courses at the university very well before you choose.” Depending on what you are studying, you are pretty free to choose subjects and in that way focus your education. It is not always easy to see from the course catalogue, what courses are exactly about. So do not hesitate to choose again, if the courses are not quite you – you are there, after all, only the one time! The not so sunny sides… …of course there are some of them as well. Rosa lived on campus, which in theory could have been really cool, but a slightly different reality met her. She lived in a tiny apartment with three other students, which she paid a lot of money for. The place in no way lived up to the expensive rent.

Her advice to all future exchange students is simple: ”Do thorough research ahead of your trip. Although I spent a lot of time preparing my stay, I could not read anywhere that it was actually better to live off of the campus area. Therefore, it is a great idea to try to find others who have previously been on exchange in the same place. ” A taste for it and many experiences richer When I asked about what exchange had done for Rosa personally, she thought for a little while. ”I have become much better at thinking internationally - to see more opportunities abroad. At the same time, I have been given an understanding that things can be done in many ways. Now I am looking for internships abroad during my master’s. So the exchange has given me more than good friends and a lifetime experience. It has given me the courage and desire to travel again.” Hopefully you are also inspired with the desire to try studying abroad. I am anyway. Student Studieliv life

DENMARK FROM THE OUTSIDE - A STUDENT ON EXCHANGE IN AARHUS

From the Middle Kingdom to the middle of Aarhus Junwei Yu, 22, is from Suzhou in China and studies Danish at Beijing Foreign Studies University. In autumn 2011, she came to Denmark to study political science and other courses at Aarhus University. China and Denmark are not only miles apart, there is also a big difference in culture. So the first thing I ask her is, whether she did not experience a major culture shock when she arrived. With a big smile she laughs ”no”. She has studied Denmark thoroughly beforehand. She was actually more curious as to whether the Danes could understand her, when she spoke Danish. Now that she has lived in Aarhus for over half a year, it seems natural to ask what she thinks about Denmark. ”It’s wonderful,” she laughs. ”It’s really nice. It is much quieter compared to Beijing or Shanghai. The air is clean and fresh, and nature is close by. And also there are not as many people.” Travelling to a country where a great many things are done differently can 52

Studieliv Student life

often seem overwhelming, but it is not necessarily negative. One of the differences between China and Denmark can be found in the way to study. ”Danish students are really good at discussions and giving presentations. They are good at expressing their opinions and being critical. In China, most education consists of lectures - you do not ask as many questions.” When the stay is ending Even exchange stays have an end, and everyone bring their own personal experiences home with them. In this context, it is natural to wonder what you have gained from the trip. It may be more than you think. But hopefully you head home with a good feeling in your stomach. For Yu, her exchange stay taught her a lot, both professionally and personally: ”In addition to meeting a lot of lovely classmates, my host dad and the other people I have come to know, I have also learned to be critical. I’ve learned a lot about myself, and I have become much more independent. I need fewer fixed limits in my life now.”

TIPS FOR STUDYING ABROAD Going on exchange is a great experience, but also a great upheaval. Be smart and go to the various information events on campus, talk to some international students here in Aarhus about how they experience living in a foreign country. Read about different countries or universities. Open your eyes up to what you really want. Dreams and ideas can be flighty - here are some good ideas for how you can plan your studies abroad: Three good pieces of advice: 1) Plan ahead - it takes longer than you expect to find accommodation and to apply for grants. 2) What do you want? Make up your mind about what you want out of your stay. 3) Be open, but also stubborn. Although it may seem impossible, it is worth the effort. Be aware of your study plan and of what it takes to get a credit transfer for your studies abroad to your Danish studies. First and foremost – jump into it! It is a fantastic way to experience another country, it is a big plus on your CV, and finally, you learn a lot - both professionally speaking, about other people and certainly about yourself. Ask your fellow students, ask your counselor and finally - ask yourself! Three good websites for inspiration: www.gribverden.dk www.udiverden.dk http://studerende.au.dk/rejsud/

THE FUTURE OF AARHUS Aarhus is currently experiencing a riveting development, which you as a student can also benefit from. A new modern library is going to be built by the docks, new modern student halls are emerging and The Freight Yard (Godsbanen) will be packed with cultural offers.

THE FREIGHT YARD, MEDIASPACE , TRAFFIC CHAOS AND THE LIGHT RAIL As a newcomer to Aarhus there is plenty to get acquainted with, when you want to stay updated about what is going on in the city. What is The Freight Yard for example? Are we going to have a light rail? And is the main library moving? The following will provide you with a brief overview of the many new opportunities that Aarhus will have to offer over the coming years. The Freight Yard, located behind the Music House and Scandinavian Centre, has already opened. It is a so-called cultural production centre, housing everything from a film workshop and an art centre to a public kitchen and a theatre. The entire freight yard area is to be renewed, so there is a lot to look forward to in that neighbourhood. For further information go to godsbanen. dk. Close to Aarhus Cathedral and Bispetorvet, the biggest project in Aarhus in modern times is emerging. The harbour is something quite extraordinary. This New Maritime Urban Area is divided into the “Inner Docks” and “the Northern Docks” and is currently undergoing a transformation from commercial harbour to urban space. By 2014 a new Mediaspace will be completed at the Inner Docks, which is

54

set to house both the main library and the citizen service centre. If you are interested, you can learn much more about the project at www.urbanmediaspace.dk. 2014 will also be the year that sees the completion of Navitas. This space will house The School of Engineering and The School of Technology Management, among others. At the Northern Docks, the Lighthouse and the Iceberg (Isbjerget) are being built. They are said to be two of the most spectacular apartment buildings in Aarhus. Students may also be lucky enough to get to live right by the sea. As early as September 2012, 159 student accommodations will be ready for move-in at the Grundfos Dormitory (Grundfos Kollegiet), which is also located at the Northern Docks. The dormitory is based on a green profile, which the residents will also have to conform to. All in all, there is a lot to look forward to! The Light Rail Transit (Letbanen) is a project with slightly longer outlooks than the ones concerning the harbour and the Freight Yard. The first part of the Light Rail is scheduled to be completed by 2015. The first stage is to build a rail connection from the docks, going up Randersvej to Skejby in Lisbjerg.

Sygehus, and finally ending in Lisbjerg. The Light Rail will run every five minutes during rush hour, and is more environmentally conscious than the city busses. Generally the many projects will signify that the traffic will be put to the test over the next couple of years. And the construction of the Marselis Tunnel (Marselistunnelen) will not make it any easier. Luckily the bike riders will have more advantages, which is another good reason to jump on your bike.

The mayor of Aarhus: Jacob Bundsgaard

AARHUS IN THE WORLD For several years, Aarhus has been branded as being “the City of Smiles” (Smilets By). Both the national media and the general public have used this reference since 1938. However, around the same time that the City Council decided to spell Aarhus with a double A, they also decided that it was time for a more international profile. The city is now branding itself with the slogan “Aarhus. Danish for Progress”. Mayor, Jacob Bundsgaard, told us about the idea behind the slogan: ”The new city brand is meant to strengthen Aarhus internationally by profiling the city within the growing global competition. The target audience is therefore international - students, workers, corporations and tourists – which is why it is in English”.

“In five years Aarhus will be an even more significant city concerning knowledge and education. It will be a city of drive and development, embracing both the classic and the modern. It will truly have gained international acceptance and have gotten an even more powerful position alongside Copenhagen as one of two Danish centres of growth – and then we are hopefully the European Capital of Culture. The European Capital of Culture 2017 is something that Aarhus is currently working vividly towards. With everything considered, the chances should definitely be very good.

There is no doubt that Aarhus will evolve into an even more significant metropolis over the forthcoming years. The city does definitely not lack projects and ambitions. When asked where he sees Aarhus in five years, the mayor answered:

VOXPOP DANISH FOR PROGRESS VS. SMILETS BY (CITY OF SMILES)

Karoline Gammelby Kristensen, studies Chinese, 6th semester “I think that Danish for Progress makes perfect sense since I already believe that Aarhus is very international. The University, in particular, does a lot for its international students. However, I still believe that “the City of Smiles” is a really good description of Aarhus.”

Søren Schmidt Kammer, studies economics, 2nd semester “I understand the reasoning behind an English slogan, since the world is undeniably getting smaller. I do, however, not feel that it depicts Aarhus specifically – you could have said the same about any other city. However, that weakness is also true for City of Smiles.”

Kristine Dyregaard Nielsen, studies political science, 4th semester “I like the idea that “Danish for Progress” is meant to strengthen Aarhus internationally, and that the city aims to renew itself. However, it is important that the people of Aarhus also understand the message, and I do not believe that everyone does. They could instead have used the English version “City of Smiles” which characterises the city beautifully. “

UNIVERSITY

AARHUS UNIVERSITY It may be difficult to wrap your head around what a university really is and how it differentiates from high school. The Student Council will therefore present you with an overview of the characteristics of the university and the many different educations available, so you can to learn more about your new place of study.

WHAT IS A UNIVERSITY? The institution that we know as university today is ancient. Its role as society’s centre of higher learning dates back to approximately the 13th century. In those days, it was primarily the people of the church who attended university, and the main focus was to interpret and compare the works of Aristotle with the writings of Christianity. The first universities were located in Bologna, Paris and later in Oxford, but have since spread across the world. Today, universities hold the task of educating and conducting research. Aarhus University does both, and have added an additional two, according to a new strategy: Knowledge sharing and talent development. After a series of comprehensive mergers with The School of Engineering in Aarhus, the Aarhus School of Business, The School of Engineering and Business in Herning and the Danish Pedagogical University, Aarhus University has now grown to comprise about 40,000 students. The educations available at the university cover a wide segment of society, ranging from theology to molecular biology to management and science of engineering. University Aarhus

59

THE POLITICAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE As a student it is important to know the structure of your university and to know who makes which decisions, so you know where to turn, if you face a specific problem or wish to gain influence. The board is the highest authority at Aarhus University. It consists of 11 members, six external and five internal members. The students hold two seats on the board. Karen Marie Kjeldsen and Benjamin Bilde Boelsmand from the Student Council were elected in 2011 by their peers to hold these positions. They have been elected for one year to represent the students’ interests and speak on their behalf. The objective of the Board is to manage the interests of the university regarding education and research as well as to determine the framework for the organisation, long-term activities and the development of the university. It is furthermore up to the Board to determine how its finances are distributed between the faculties, and it is the Board that approves the university budgets. Below the Board is the Rectorate, which is made up of the rector, Lauritz B. Holm-Nielsen, pro-rector, Søren E. Frandsen, and the university director, Jørgen Jørgensen. The rectorate is responsible for the daily management of the university, working within the framework established by the board. The rectorate and the deans of the four faculties combined constitute the senior management group. 60

Aarhus University

Each faculty has a dean as their highest leader. The dean is employed by the rector and holds the task of maintaining the quality of education, teaching and research. The dean furthermore holds the responsibility of approving the study programmes, which are the laws governing the various educations. At the institutes, the top leader is the head of department. The head of department is employed by the dean and holds the task of managing the institute on a daily basis. The head of department must, similar to the dean, ensure that there is cohesion between the teaching and research at the institute. Finally, each programme has a board of studies and a head of studies. The head of studies is a member of the board of studies, which is a board, assembled by an equal amount of students and university employees. The board of studies holds the function of organising and developing the educations. The board of studies is in charge of following up on evaluations, proposals for changes to the study programmes and approvals of curricula. They are the ones you need to contact if you e.g. need to apply for dispensation to undertake a final under other terms, or if you want to complain about a grade.

THE ACADEMIC STRUCTURE THE FOUR MAIN FACULTIES AT AARHUS UNIVERSITY ARTS

HEALTH

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

BUSINESS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

Aarhus University is made up of four faculties. Each faculty represents its own branch of science. Aarhus University consists of the following faculties: Arts, Science and Technology, Health, and Business and Social Sciences. Every faculty is made up of several departments, which are smaller areas handling specific studies. Within Arts, is e.g. the Department of Aesthetics and Communication, which offers programmes in children’s literature, information and media science, IT and didactics, linguistics, Nordic languages, semiotics, Western European languages and cultures as well as the aesthetic subjects.

Upon completion of their Bachelor most students continue on with a twoyear Master’s degree at university. At this point you can either choose a Master’s that is closely related to your Bachelor or you may choose to start a Master’s of a different subject matter in order to widen your perspective and knowledge. Only a very limited amount of students know which Master’s degree they want to study, when they begin university. So do not despair, if this applies to you as well. Through the course of your Bachelor’s Degree, you will be guided by your student counsellors, to choose the right supplementary or subsidiary subjects and ultimately to choose the right Master’s Degree.

When you begin university, you will start with a bachelor’s degree, which typically takes three years to complete. Many programmes require that after two years of study you undertake a supplementary subject lasting one year, or a subsidiary subject, which typically takes two years. Hereafter, you may call yourself a Bachelor. University Aarhus

GAIN INFLUENCE At university there are many ways in which you can gain influence or get involved with student life. The Student Council will here outline some of the many opportunities you have for making a difference.

WITHIN YOUR PROGRAMME Course committees If you want to gain influence on aspects ranging from the physical surroundings to the academic context of your programme, you have the opportunity to get involved in your course committee. The course committee is a gathering of students from your programme, working with the students’ interests in mind. This gives you the unique opportunity to express your experiences about what works well and what should be changed. In collaboration with your fellow students you can actually make a difference through the course committee. The course committee gives you a unique opportunity to work towards a better education and study environment, while getting to know other students from your programme. Board of Studies Proposals carried by the board of studies hold great significance for your education. Here the representatives handle teaching evaluations, fresher’s events, the general quality of the education and matters concerning dispensation, credits etc. The board of studies are thus responsible for every aspect concerning education. The boards are made up of an equal number of representatives from 62

Aarhus University

the faculty/researchers and student representatives, so as a student you can get a lot of direct influence. The student representatives on the boards are usually elected through their course committees, as they are already engaged in matters that concern the students. If you run for a position in your board of studies, you must attend about three to five meetings per semester. It is also possible to run for a position as a substitute member of the board, which allows you to participate in the board of studies’ meetings and gain insight into their workings, though without having a right to vote.

Friday bar committees and party planning committees Would you like to make sure that your fellow students have a cosy and festive place to gather every week? And would you like to meet a lot of different students from your programme? Then you should get involved in the Friday bar committee. Here you will get the chance to leave your mark on the Friday bar. You may for example get to decide which beer to sell, how to decorate the bar and which events to plan. As a member you get to decide how often you want to be behind the bar. Your effort is always greatly appreciated by

the students, who enjoy the refreshing beer, served in good company every Friday. Like the Friday bar committees, the party planning committees are an important aspect of the social life at university. It differs from programme to programme how many parties are planned, but the average is about two per semester. The parties are often themed and include costumes, competitions and other fun activities. As a member of the party planning committee, you can get involved in making the parties more fun by adding a personal touch to the posters, the theme and the activities. You can help by purchasing beverages, decorating the venue or bartending, and thereby participate in a social gathering for different classes from your programme.

Lecture associations A certain amount of the academic life at the university takes part outside of the mandatory reading and scheduled lectures. One example of this is the many lecture associations that provides opportunities to dive deeper into the subject of your choice or to shop around other fields. Most subjects have their own lecture association, which will typically be one of the offers introduced to you during fresher’s week. You can contribute to insuring the academic quality of the lectures, as well as making them more attractive for several students, by being part of the team that organises the lectures, invites guest speakers and arranges and carries out the practical details on the day of the lecture.

AT YOUR FACULTY The academic council The academic council is an advisory forum for the dean, who is the leader of each faculty. The academic council does not have the authority to make decisions, however, they handle and discuss important topics such as the distribution of funds, the structure of programmes, research and education. The academic council is made up of representatives from the faculty (researchers and PhD’s) as well as student representatives, who have been democratically elected. If you want to influence the dean’s decisions, which might have critical significance for the way your education and lectures are conducted, you can run for the academic council through your course committee. There are approximately three meetings during the semester. University Aarhus

63

AT YOUR UNIVERSITY The Student Council The Student Council is a political organisation run by students, which works for the common interest of the students, independent of any political party interest. The Student Council is a union of all students at Aarhus University and every single student is represented in the joint council. The joint council is made up of democratically elected representatives from all departments at Aarhus University. In the joint council, you can take part in ensuring student rights and improving the student conditions at Aarhus University as well as nationally. The Student Council is your way to be heard, on all levels handling education and research: • At every programme through course committees • At university level, where the students have two representatives on the Aarhus University board, as well as in a number of committees • At a local political level, where you attempt to influence the agenda in the city council, especially concerning housing and relevant student jobs • At a national level, where you collaborate with other universities and educational institutions in Denmark, in order to influence the politicians at Christiansborg to consider and take responsibility for the students. If you want to be a part of influencing the management at Aarhus University and improving the conditions and rights of all students, then you should consider joining The Student Council.

Political student organisations At the university, there are various political student organisations that you can join. Here, you can discuss politics based on a party political angle or listen to lectures about various societal topics. The organisations are Liberal students of Denmark (Danmarks Liberale Studerende), Conservative Students (Konservative Studenter) and Open Forum (Frit Forum), which is a student organisation with social democratic core values. Furthermore, the organisation A Green AU (Grønt AU) have also participated actively in the student political debate, and works towards a more sustainable AU. Do it yourself If you have an idea for a cool project at the university that you would like to carry out, you do not have to go through one of the above mentioned organisations. If you feel more like driving forward your own initiative, then all you have to do is apply for one of the many possibilities available for financial and technical aid. You can, for instance, apply for financial support through the Student Council Activity Fund (Studenterrådets Aktivitetspulje), which aims at supporting academic and political events and organisations.

Examples of initiatives taken by students in the past include the party committee HUMBUG, and the regatta (Kapsejlads), which is now a proud tradition. The sky is the limit!

THE STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council is the students’ way to be heard at university and is represented at all levels, in order to ensure that the students have as much influence as possible. From the course committees, the board of studies and The Academic Council to the Aarhus University board and the National Union of Students in Denmark, who works to ensure students’ conditions at a national level.

THE STUDENT COUNCIL AS A POLITICAL PLAYER All Danish students have several common interests – SU, accommodation, a well functioning study environment, and a good education free of charge. To ensure these interests they must be politically supported. The Student Council therefore works towards collaborating with and putting pressure on politicians and decision makers, in order to ensure the best possible conditions for the students at Aarhus University.

The Student Council is your student organisation at the university, where students from all programmes collaborate to ensure student rights and improve student conditions at Aarhus University as well as nationally.

// Three aspects of the Student Council 1. The Student Council is a political player. Both internally at the university and in general public debate, The Student Council is the students’ way to be heard.

2. The Student Council represents the students academically in every respect. We have students working in everything from the local board of studies to the Aarhus University Board.

3. The Student Council offers an array of services designed to make

your life as a student easier, cheaper and more fun. Among these are Denmark’s Largest Friday Bar and Sports Day, Study fair courses, legal aid, and this student guide.

YOUR PATH TO THE STUDENT COUNCIL

The course committees can be found at every programme, which is where most students get acquainted with the Student Council. The course committees all share the common philosophy that all students are welcome and allowed to speak their mind. This is where you can influence your programme.

Ensuring student rights The most important tasks held by the course committees are to ensure the student rights and to influence the development of each programme. At the same time, they are also involved in improving social aspects, by for instance affecting everything from prices in the cafeteria to student capacity at the programme. The course committees can make decisions on their own, but also serve as an advisory group for the students on the board of studies, the faculty councils and the academic councils. A part of the Student Council All the course committees are part of the Student Council, which gives them the opportunity to send representatives to the joint committee’s meetings. Here, you will get to meet student representatives from other subjects and discuss the general student opinion regarding various topics concerning student life – e.g. SU, accommodation, educational environment, teaching methods, types of examinations etc. 66

Aarhus University

Daily management On a daily basis, the Student Council is managed by its executive committee, which is made up of seven students from various programmes, who are elected every April by the joint committee. The executive committee manages the Student Council and their political work. The student politicians on the executive committee work towards the best possible conditions for the students at Aarhus University. They focus on study environment, education, research, SU, student jobs and accommodation.

THE STUDENT COUNCIL’S FOCUS AREAS The Student Council works actively year round to improve the students’ conditions and circumstances. The daily management closely follows both the internal and public debate, and reacts to the issues that influence the daily lives of the students. During the past semester the Student Council, among others themes, focussed on the following: More student accommodations The total number of students in Aarhus is continually growing, and for years there has been an enormous imbalance between this fact and the number of newly built student accommodations. Every year when the studies commence, we see students commuting longdistance for months, sleeping in cars, or on sofas, or on the floors of friends and family members. This year the Student Council is collaborating with the university, the tenant association LLO and others, to improve the housing situation for students. It is our goal to get the rector and the mayor, Jacob Bundsgaard, to incorporate student housing into their plans for the campus, the municipal hospital ground and the new buildings at the docks. The Rent Control Board also needs to be renewed. The Student Council aims to interfere in the next board election to ensure that they have the resources they need to perform their tasks. both students and employees have complained loudly about their lack of influence. The Student Council has therefore written letters, held public meetings between the management and the students and pressurised for more influence. This resulted in an intense media storm in the winter/spring of 2012, which prompted the board to demand that the management change their practice, in order to become much more visible among the common students and employees. We have yet to witness whether this will cause an increased influence. We are working for the study environment To a great extent, 2012 will be about the implementation of the academic development process. From September 2012, the majority of the programmes set to move to Business and Social Sciences and Arts, have new premises and thus an effort has to be made to ensure the study environments. Moving the study and research environments have a considerate impact on both the students’ everyday life and on the several organisations 1) Forbered spørgsmål – Det viserthat inwork for motivation the study environment teresse, og ikke mindstwithin kan the individual subject areas. det komme nervøsiteten i forkøbet. THE STUDENT COUNCIL OFFERS SERVICES The Student Council is more than just politics. It also offers a number of services aimed at making your life as a student easier, cheaper and more fun. The Student Council organises a study fair at the beginning of September, where you can get a lot of good offers on everything from newspapers to insurances. Furthermore the Student Council publishes a student calendar and this student guide.

Another offer is courses with topics such as perfectionism, study techniques, student economy, Photoshop and Indesign, as well as handling stress. All of which can strengthen you academically as a student. Finally, the Student Council also offers aid, if you are in need of legal assistance. You can read more about the Student Council’s various offers at www.sr.au.dk

DENMARK’S LARGEST FRIDAY BAR AND SPORTS DAY One event that you must remember to attend in 2012 is Denmark’s Largest Friday bar and Sports Day. Every year in September the Student Council and AUS invite every student at Aarhus University to a spectacular event in the University’s back yard. Several of the party committees and Friday bars at the university contribute to creating a perfect atmosphere, in order to get all areas of Aarhus University to participate in the event.

During the day the university park is packed with various sporting activities and competitions accompanied by DJ’s. In the evening the park provides the setting for great concerts, which has previously included artists such as TV-2, Nik&Jay, Outlandish, Spleen United and The Blue Van, so there is always a good atmosphere and great music.

POLITICAL STUDENT SOCIETIES At the university there are various political student societies, which you can register with if you wish to discuss politics from a particular party’s political perspective or hear lectures about different societal topics. The societies that exist are Danmarks Liberale Studerende (Liberal Students of Denmark), Konservative Studenter (Conservative Students) and Frit Forum, which is a student organisation with social democratic core values.

Do it yourself If you have an idea for a cool project at the university that you would like to see carried out then you are not forced to turn to one of the above mentioned societies. If you feel better about driving forward your own initiative then all you have to do is search for the financial, as well as technical support, for the initiative; of which there are plenty. For instance, you can apply for financial support though the Student Council’s Activity Fund (Studenterrådets Aktivitetspulje), which aims at supporting academic and political events and societies. Examples of initiatives taken by students in the past include the party society HUMBUG and the traditional ragatta (Kapsejlads) in the University Park. Only your imagination is the limit! Green AU Green AU is the “green” network for students at Aarhus University. They wish to make the university more sustainable by focusing on the climate and the environment. They are working on specific things like climate-friendly canteen food and we also arrange events (e.g. trips to sustainable places in the city). Get involved – even if it is just a little. There is always room for new ideas. The more people, the more we can get done. Be a part of shaping the green universities of the future! Find Grønt AU on Facebook.

GOOD ADVICE

HOUSING FIVE TIPS FOR HOUSING SEARCH 1. KNOW HOW YOU WOULD LIKE

TO LIVE Before you start searching for housing, it is important that you have made up your mind about how you prefer to live. Are you the type, who wants company, then a dorm room might be just you. On the other hand, this may not be exactly you, if you would rather live alone. Are you still in doubt, then find help here in the Student Guide: We have interviewed three students about the pros and cons of three types of housing.

public transportation, it might be an opportunity to look at places outside the city centre. Here, you can usually find larger apartments at a lower price.

4. MAKE A BUDGET

2. SEARCH SEVERAL PLACES

If you have not yet found a home, fear not. It is still possible to find a place if you search several places. That way you improve your chances of finding a place to live. Right up until your semester starts, an additional number are looking for places, so you may have to relax a little on the requirements or be prepared to fight for the best apartments.

Before you begin looking at the most expensive penthouse apartments by the harbour, you should consider how much you can afford to pay in rent. Make a budget as a way to figure out what rent you can afford. This is also related to the way of living you want, because campus housing is a lot cheaper than staying in your own apartment. Also, remember that you have the opportunity to apply for housing benefits through the Aarhus Municipality. Be aware that it is required that you rent an apartment or a dorm room with a kitchen. If you share the apartment with others, it is the official tenant, who may apply for the benefits - or you can apply together. Read more at www.aarhus.dk under ”Selvbetjening” (Self service).

3. CONSIDER WHERE IN THE CITY

5. MAKE SURE TO GET A LEASE

YOU WANT TO LIVE Besides finding out how you want to live, it is just as important, where you want to live. Aarhus has many different areas, each with its own charm. There are many good places, and therefore it might be a good idea to make up your mind where you prefer to live before you begin the search. For example, consider whether you want to live near downtown or your studies. And if you have your own car or do not mind

CONTRACT Always make sure to get a lease contract for your new place. Also remember to read through it carefully, to make sure that no errors have occurred, or that you will have pay too high a rent. If you are unsure about whether you are paying too much rent, consult a tenants union or www.borger.dk, where you can read more about Huslejenævnet (the rent assessment committee) in Aarhus. THREE STUDENTS IN THREE DIFFERENT HOUSING ALTERNATIVES – ON PROS AND CONS Campus dorm room Rikke Krog Pedersen, studying at the Teachers’ Seminar, lives in a campus dorm room: Pros: The price is definitely an advantage. It is cheaper to stay in campus housing than many other options. Often many young people live here, and it really is an advantage - especially if you are very social. It is also a good way to meet new people, if you do not know that many already, and you just moved to town. Cons:Disadvantages exist as well of course. The cheaper price is a reflection of the relatively small area that you have to live on. Staying in a dorm also means that you share kitchen and bathroom, and you do not have your own living room either.

Own apartment Nadia Just, studying psychology at AU, lives in her own apartment: Pros: The advantage of staying in your own apartment is that you yourself get to decide. There are not that many challenges, e.g. in the form of coordination of visits, which there are when you live with others. It can especially be nice to be guaranteed peace and tranquillity, when you have to study for exams or work on a major assignment. Cons: The main disadvantage of living alone is obviously the price. You are alone with all expenses, and it can quickly become pricey. Also, it can be a little lonely living alone, especially if you do not have a huge amount of social stuff going on. But it is never worse than you can call your friends and find something to do together.

Shared apartment

Josefine Knudsen, studying educational science at AU, lives in a shared apartment: Pros: The good thing about sharing an apartment is that there is always someone to come home and talk to. If you do not know that many people in the city, it is perhaps also a good idea to share an apartment with someone. This makes it a little easier to be new in town. Economically it is of course also an advantage that you have someone to share expenses with, especially if you do not even have SU. Cons: Of course there are also some disadvantages to sharing an apartment. For example, there may be challenges in regards to cleaning, visits and parties. It is important from the beginning to discuss those topics, so you know what you are getting yourself into. By sharing an apartment, you get the opportunity to become very close and experience both good and bad sides of each other.

STUDENT JOBS For many students, a student job is a much needed helping hand on a tight budget. But a student job can be much more than that - it could be the entry ticket to your dream job, when the happy student days come to an end. Either way, your student job will always serve as experience and evidence of your presence on the labour market. Many students are told from day one that a relevant student job is incredibly important. Although the significance certainly is not to be ignored, it is equally important to remember that relevant student jobs often go to older students, who have acquired some of the competences and the theory that a student job often requires. Fine, fine, but how do you find this amazing student job? Though it sounds slightly worn, try to consider some of the following questions, before you engage in the wild job hunt.

• How much money do you need?

Is your whole SU meant for rent and other less exciting expenses? Or do you have some money left when all is paid?

• How much time can you spend on

the job? You can, as far as we know, only be in one place at a time. The time spent on the job, must be subtracted from the time that could be spent on e.g. studies, friends, a girlfriend and spare time activities.

• Is it possible to find a study-related

job that may affect your future career? Now, if the choice is between a studyrelated job with lower pay and a regular job without any relevance, what would you choose?

• What jobs are available?

It is no good to dream of the fantastic, study-related jobs, if they do not actually exist. And you need money, so sometimes you have to take what you can get!

• What skills, experience and interests do you have? This will help you become aware of your options and help you create a fiercely convincing application.

When the job is finally in the bag, make sure to get an employment contract! You are entitled to it, and the contract is your guarantee of your agreements and conditions. Now for the more practical tips and advice on how to construct a great and forceful application. Good luck!

ADVICE FOR CONSTRUCTION OF APPLICATION AND CV

ADVICE FOR THE JOB INTERVIEW:

Research ... is incredibly important. Look into the company, where you are applying for work. You target the application best by actually knowing what kind of company it is. This way you can tell them, why they specifically need you.

Now you are finally at the interview. Your hands are perhaps shaking a little or feel a bit clammier than usual. Fear not - take a deep breath and remember the following three tips:

Personality Skip the mass-produced application that everyone would write. Let your personality and humour shine through by giving examples of the activities and things that reflect you as a person. Work through your application Make sure to correct the application grammatically. Complicated sentences and lack of punctuation makes reading difficult. The application is how you sell yourself - and you are the best candidate, right, so make the best application. Work through your CV The CV shows your prospective employer who you are and what you can do in a concise manner. So it has to say, what you can do, educationally and professionally. Attach a picture to your CV - many companies like to put a face on the applicants. Apply unsolicited Send applications even when a job opportunity has not yet been posted. When the application is not directed at a specific position, it is even more important to have background information about the company. This allows you to sell your skills in the best way and suggest how they might be essential for the company. 78

Gode Good råd advice

1) Be confident - Believe in your own abilities. 2) Prepare questions - It shows interest and motivation! 3) Be honest and smile - You can highlight your strengths, but do not hide your weaknesses... Most importantly - remember that it is not the end of the world, if you for instance stutter a bit during the interview. Take the job interview as an experience. No matter what, you are earning valuable experience!

// Good websites Sometimes jobs are not advertised at all, but instead spread through networks. Here, you cannot do much else than tell friends, family and acquaintances that you are looking for a student job. But there are many good websites, where you can view job listings: • http://www.jobnet.dk • http://www.Jobindex.dk • http://jobbank.au.dk – The Universiuniversity’s own job bank! •http://moment.dk/students

START YOUR OWN? Starting your own is a possibility that too few take advantage of, and therefore you should seriously consider it. You do not need vast initial capital, investors or anything but a good idea.

Af: Laura Elgaard

If you have a good business concept lying somewhere in the attic, then your time at the university may be the time to realize it. Generally, people are not very good at engaging themselves in new things, and for many people the university will seem like an overly chaotic time to become an entrepreneur. But actually it is a really good time, as most students do not have multiple obligations such as children. You have a regular income to cover your basic expenses, as well as good opportunities to find help and support from more experienced people, but also the opportunity to challenge your idea and see, if it can work in the real world. Here are some tips to live out your dream.

and abilities. Set goals - make a plan It helps a lot to get some structure on the project - set some goals and make a plan. When do you expect to have sold the first items - in one month, three months? You are your own boss, so it is entirely up to you how much work that can and should be invested in the project. It certainly requires much time, and therefore it is important that you are passionate about your product and project. Be stubborn It may be a while from starting your small business, until you turn a profit. So be stubborn and remember why you are passionate about your project!

Think creative! Whether you already have an idea or not, always start with your interests

WORK AND NO PAY You can become a volunteer for many reasons, and it is possible to be active in a wide variety of associations and organizations - there is definitely something that will match your interest. And this is regardless of whether you want to live out your inner event planner or scout leader.

Being a volunteer in an association / organisation will pay off in the end. Often, your volunteer work gives you the opportunity to build some experience in an area that you are passionate about. Experience, which can later help you get your dream job (where you then can get paid to do what interests you). As mentioned earlier, the student job can prove to be invaluable in the long run, but do not worry if you do not have the perfect student job. You can gain experience, network and work with your interest in exchange for being a volunteer. You can get involved in all sorts of associations, organisations and projects. And there will be something for you, no matter what your reasons for choosing the job may be. Our best advice, however, is that you do something that truly interests you! 80

Now what? You can become a homework tutor and help children and young people. Often across cultural and social differences. You can get organisational experience, or you can become active in the party planning committee at your education. You can become politically active or a girl scout. It really is all up to you.

On the website below, you can search among hundreds of volunteer jobs. You can also visit the association or organisation that you have a slight crush on and ask if they could use a helping hand. They often can! www.frivilligjob.dk

STUDENT ON A BUDGET CLOTHES Everyone needs clothes - student or not, but why pay full price if you can get it for less? That way you may have money for an extra beer in the bar or maybe just a little more space in the budget. If you sign up for the newsletter www.myoutlets.dk, you regularly get an email about the upcoming outlet sales - and Aarhus is often on the list. There may be a lot of money to save and the opportunity to make a good bargain. Check it out!

Also, several of the city’s clothing stores give a student discount, but it is often up to you to keep your eyes open for these discounts, because the stores do not always show them off. You may find the stores with a discount on the following website: www.studenter-rabatten.dk

FOOD Food is a big budget item for most students, which leaves a good opportunity to save money. 1. Shop wisely. Make a meal plan, do not shop on an empty stomach and only go once a week - so you limit the possibility of impulse buying. 2. Use your leftovers. If you store your leftovers, you may have a full meal at the end of the week. 3. Buy discount. The packaging may not always look that inviting, but the food is usually fine. This especially applies to milk, butter and other basic products.

4. Do not forget your lunch! The canteen can be an expensive solution, unless you swap around mealtimes and eat lunch for dinner. This can in fact be a good solution, if you only have yourself to cook for. 5. Eat together. It is usually cheaper to cook for more people and it is also more fun. Inspiration for cheap dishes can be found here: www.studentermad.dk www.su-mad.dk

RISOTTO (MADE CHEAPLY)

The budget may not have room for a trip to a restaurant, but that leaves you to work on your cooking skills. Here is a suggestion for a dish, you could make: You will need: 1 onion, 1 chicken bouillon cube, 1 leek, approx. 4 spring onions, 2 dl. Risotto rice (or porridge rice), 250 ml. cream, 1 bottle of white wine, 1 bag of grated parmesan cheese, 225 g chicken, a little oil, salt and pepper. Cut the chicken into cubes and fry in oil until golden brown. Take the chicken out and put the rice in the pan. Fry them until they are see-through with the finely chopped onions, leeks and spring onions. Next, add the bouillon cube, together with approx. 1 cup water, to the pan. Keep feeding the rice with cream and white wine. 82

Gode Good rĂĽd advice

The dish should boil/simmer the whole time. The dish is ready when the rice is done. This should take about 17 min. Remember to season the dish with salt and pepper. Finally, add a good handful of grated parmesan cheese. Serve immediately. You can also sprinkle grated parmesan over the dish and drink the rest of the cool white wine with it.

TRANSPORT For some students, one of the major budget items can be transport, especially for those students who are not originally from Aarhus. This problem fortunately has several solutions. First and foremost the DSB Wildcard - a discount card for young people under 26 and students, providing 50% off train trips on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and 25% off on the week’s biggest travel days, Friday and Sunday. The discount card costs 185DKK a year. Money that is quickly earned through the discount, if you are a frequent passenger. A more modern and less spontaneous form of hitchhiking is possible through ”Gomore.dk”. The principle is simple and straightforward. You go onto the website and see if someone is driving to the same place as you on the same day and time, and you find someone, you can sign up for the ride. The cost of the trip is determined by the driver, but generally the prices are low. If you are paying a visit to our wonderful capital Copenhagen, there is a really well-functioning offer for students. You can travel with the bus line, ”Linie888”. It is a bus service between Aarhus and Copenhagen running the whole week through. As a student, a

ticket between Monday and Thursday costs only 150DKK, and the same applies to so-called red departures between Friday and Sunday. If you are not into the odd schedules of the red departures, you can get there for just 225DKK from Friday to Sunday with the remaining bus departures. Here DSB does not match up - even if you have a Wildcard. However, you may be lucky enough to grab a hold of one of the DSB Orange tickets, if you are quick – check out dsb.dk/orange. Apart from the fact that the bus service is an inexpensive form of travel, it is also very pleasant, because the bus uses the ferry, either Aarhus-Kalundborg or Odden-Ebeltoft. This means that there is room to stretch your legs along the way and enjoy the food you brought or buy a meal onboard. Get more info at: www.dsb.dk/wildcard www.gomore.dk www.linie888.dk www.dsb.dk/orange

// SUGGESTION FOR A CHEAP WEEK IN AARHUS Monday: Café Jorden – Open mic at 8pm (Free). Tuesday: Le Coq - ’Fad & Mad’ (Food & Beer) for 50DKK. Wednesday: Barstart – 6 cl. Cocktails for 50DKK. Thursday: Herr Bartels – Buy a drink and get to for the price of one. Friday: Brunch at Globen Flakket 8.45-11am for 32DKK. Saturday: Trip to the movies (Biocity and Cinemaxx give a student discount of 15DKK on the movie ticket). Sunday: ”Sundays in Paradise” – Brunch and a movie in Øst for Paradis for 120DKK (First Sunday of the month). 84
