CAMPUS RESOURCES Idaho State is committed to the success of its students and the contributions to their communities. At ISU, this commitment is carried out through various offices and resources on campus that exist to assist students in reaching their full potential. INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS OFFICE (IPO): International Programs Office is responsible for assisting incoming international students and scholars with the admissions and student visa processes, managing orientation and retention programs aimed at international student success, and organizing programs to ‘internationalize’ the campus (including managing the international Study Abroad programs). IPO is the campus office that assists all students, scholars and faculty (and their dependents) who hold an immigration status of F-1, J-1, or H-1B with any visa status question or concern. In addition, IPO manages the international recruitment plan for the university, and advises other university offices in hiring foreign scholars and faculty. IPO recognizes the value of our diverse campus community and works to make this diversity of benefit to all. See www.isu.edu/ipo/. LIBRARY FACILITIES ISU’s Eli M. Oboler Library provides access to great resources and services. The library collections currently consist of more than three million items of different types (books, periodicals, maps, journals, government documents, etc.), with nearly half a million books in the main collection. The library and its staff are invaluable to ISU students in research in many ways, including the interlibrary loan system through which ISU students have access to items available at other participating libraries. See www.isu.edu/library/ to learn more. COMPUTER LABS AND FACILITIES ISU has a multitude on convenient on-campus computer labs available for use by current students (including 24 hour facilities), administered through Information Technology Services. View www.isu.edu/its/labs/labinfo. shtml to see lab locations. Also, students can access the secure campus wide wireless network on their own laptops by purchasing a computer account each semester, at low cost.

STUDENT HEALTH CENTER The ISU Student Health Center employs a friendly, professional medical staff to provide students with high-quality, low-cost health care while they are attending ISU. The Student Health Center offers “same day” morning appointments as well as advance appointments for special procedures. A walk-in clinic is also available. The Student Health Center also provides pharmaceutical services to students. Other services available are routine X-rays, laboratory studies, nutrition and healthy lifestyle counseling, and women’s and men’s health clinics. At ISU all international students are required to have acceptable health (medical) insurance. The ISU health insurance plan is available, which together with the Student Health Center provides comprehensive medical care coverage. Visit www.isu.edu/stuhlth/. ACADEMIC ADVISING (AAC) Undergraduate international students are advised by faculty in their academic departments. Assigned faculty advisors help the student select the best course schedule, including degree requirements and elective classes. ISU degrees, like those at most American universities, have a wide variety of course choices available, and the advisor helps the advisee make the course choices that best suit their academic, professional and personal goals. Additionally, the Academic Advising Center serves as a general advising resource for all students. New undergraduate students should complete the online orientation to ISU academics and registration, at www.isu.edu/advising/ madvising.shtml. Advising for graduate students is also done through their academic departments, with a faculty advisor. CENTER FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING (CETL) The Center for Teaching and Learning offers free individual and small-group tutoring in math, writing, and content area courses ranging from anthropology to zoology. Also, classes, workshops, and individual tutoring for non-native speakers of English are available in areas including American culture, written and oral presentation support, pronunciation, grammar, and conversation/ discussion skills. CeTL also has eight week classes focused on learning strategies and money management. See www.isu.edu/ctl/. CAREER CENTER The ISU Career Center is a comprehensive office serving both the career development and employment needs of our students and alumni. The goal of the Career Center is to assist in developing partnerships between students, alumni and faculty designed to enhance the career development of ISU students. Visit www.isu.edu/career/ for more information. EARLY LEARNING CENTER The Early Learning Center offers an educational after-school program for children of ISU students from 6 weeks of age up through 5th grade. See www.isu.edu/earlylc/index.html. INTENSIVE ENGLISH PROGRAM (ELS) ISU has contracted with the ELS Language Centers to provide a full-service intensive English program. With classes beginning every four weeks, admission to ELS is always open. Students

7

wishing to study at ISU but needing language instruction can enter the ELS program at Pocatello or any of the other U.S.-based ELS Language Centers, and with completion of level 112 of the ELS curriculum can be admitted to an ISU degree program without a TOEFL result. A conditional letter of admission to ISU is available to students in most majors not meeting the TOEFL requirement but academically and financially admissible to the university. ELS also administers the official iBT TOEFL several times per year at the ELS Center in Pocatello, located in the ISU Continuing Education building near the main campus. Register at www.ets.org. ELS students have full access to all ISU facilities, including housing, recreation, dining and computer labs. See more information at www.els.edu/pocatello.

UNIVERSITY HOUSING AND DINING University Housing (www.isu.edu/housing) at ISU offers a variety of living options suitable for international students and scholars. Both traditional residence halls and on-campus apartments are typically available, but you must make arrangements before arriving on campus. University housing facilities are safe, secure, convenient, and affordable. Many choices are available, and prices range from $1,260 to $1,803 per semester (4 months) for residence halls, and from $242.50 per person per month for shared apartment units. All housing units are non-smoking, and the cost includes local telephone service, basic cable television service, and all utilities (electricity, water, etc.) Meal plans are available to make convenient use of the on-campus dining facilities, found in three different locations. A meal plan is required for residence hall students unless they are in their junior year or beyond. Students in apartments may also purchase residence hall meal plans or commuter meal plans. See www.isu.edu/housing/cost_info.shtml for more information. It is not required for ISU students to choose on-campus housing or dining. Living off-campus provides freedom to choose roommates and living style, but offers less convenience and fewer opportunities to participate in campus life and activities.

9

STUDENT LIFE POCATELLO ISU’s location in the mid-size city of Pocatello means that students have access to popular shops and dining establishments, many offering international items and foods. In addition, there are international restaurants (Chinese, Indian, Mediterranean, Thai, and Mexican) near campus. Supermarkets in Pocatello are numerous and most have an international selection of popular nonU.S. food items and ingredients. In spite of these conveniences, the cost of living in Pocatello is well below the national average, and compared with similar communities in such states as California and New York is extremely low. Find out more at www.pocatellocvb.com/. Pocatello has four seasons with cold winters, pleasant autumns and springs, and hot summers. Pocatello is relatively dry with little rainfall but significant snowfall. The city also has a public bus system that can takes students from campus to many locations throughout Pocatello, including popular shopping destinations. Visit www.pocatellotransit.com/. School-age children of ISU students attend nearby Washington Elementary public school. School bus stops are located on campus. REGIONAL ATTRACTIONS Pocatello and ISU are located in a beautiful mountain valley, and within easy driving distance to some famous U.S. locations and outdoor attractions: Sun Valley ski resort, the larger cities of Boise and Salt Lake City, Yellowstone National Park, Jackson Hole, Wyoming and the Grand Teton mountains, and numerous outdoor recreational spots. In fact, skiing and winter sports and other outdoor recreation areas are easily found within 20 minutes of Pocatello. See www.seidaho.org/, www.nps.gov/yell/index.htm, and www.jacksonholechamber.com/ for more information. ACCESS Pocatello is accessible via the large international airport at Salt Lake City, 2 ½ hours away by car (or shuttle service). Flights to/from Salt Lake City serve the entire U.S. and many overseas locations. There is also a smaller regional airport located right outside Pocatello. Airport information is available at www.slcairport.com/ and www.pocatello.us/airport/index.htm. Only one airline currently serves the Pocatello Regional Airport, so it is likely that your final U.S. stop will be the

10

Salt Lake City International Airport. The shuttle company Salt Lake Express offers convenient service from that airport to Pocatello. See www.saltlakeexpress.com/. Public transportation serves the campus in the form of Pocatello Transit Buses. RECREATION ISU has some great recreational opportunities, many of them available at no cost to students. The Student Recreation Center (recently expanded and improved) in Reed Gym has facilities for many indoor sports for students to use. The center has gymnasiums, tennis courts, a swimming pool and more. The Outdoor Adventure Center has outdoor gear (hiking, camping, etc.) available for rent at low cost to students and sponsors many outdoor events, including trips to nearby locations. See more information at www.isu.edu/camprec/facilities/index.shtml and www.isu.edu/outdoor/. STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS There are 160 student organizations on the ISU campus, including several international student groups. Student organizations help students get involved and become part of the campus community. Many on-campus events (some of them very popular international events) are organized and sponsored by student-led groups. See a directory of current student organizations at www.isu.edu/stdorg. ACTIVITIES, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT The beautiful L.E. and Thelma E. Stephens Performing Arts Center. ISU hosts many national and international artists who perform at the Stephens Center, and there are also many on-campus music, dance and theatre events put on by students in those departments. See www.isu.edu/ stephens/ and www.isu.edu/arts/. ISU has one of the very few on-campus movie theaters in the U.S., the Bengal Theater. The Bengal Theater shows recent American and also classic movies free to students nightly. It is located in the building that is the heart of many campus activities, the Pond Student Union Building (PSUB). The PSUB also houses a bowling alley, game center, post office, restaurants, the university radio station and the university bookstore. Visit www.isu.edu/union/ and www.isu.edu/union/calendar.shtml.

11

COSTS International students at ISU pay ‘non-resident’ tuition and fees (course costs), unless awarded aid (see below), as at almost all public universities in the United States. Idaho State’s tuition rates are significantly lower than most other universities, however. Living expenses in Pocatello are extremely low. On-campus housing is very reasonably priced (see page 9) and food, restaurant, and recreation/entertainment is readily available at low cost (including an on-campus movie theater and bowling and game center). Shopping in Pocatello offers many choices, including discount and warehouse style stores. The total amount requiring documentation each year for international students currently is calculated as: Annual Costs (Summer not included)

12

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE IS AVAILABLE FOR MANY INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IN SEVERAL FORMS: ASSISTANTSHIPS At ISU there are several hundred on-campus positions involving teaching or research, available to undergrad students in ISU’s degree programs. Awards of these assistantships are made by the individual graduate level departments. Assistantships also award full tuition costs and a cash stipend, paid through the course of employment. See www.isu.edu/graduate/financial. shtml#assistantships_fellowships for more information. NON-RESIDENT TUITION WAIVERS (NRTW) Non-resident tuition waivers are available at ISU. These awards reduce the total cost of tuition and fees by about 70%. NRTWs are awarded based on a GPA of 3.0 (or converted equivalent) or higher, and are available for both graduate and undergraduate level students. No application is necessary. Renewal of the award also requires a 3.0 GPA or higher. The majority of NRTWs are in the technical or scientific majors. If a student is awarded an NRTW, he/she is not eligible to also receive an International Room and Board Scholarship. See www.isu.edu/ipo/scholarship.shtml for scholarship information for international students. INTERNATIONAL ROOM AND BOARD SCHOLARSHIPS This scholarship program awards a number of full room and board scholarships to deserving incoming undergraduate students. Eligibility for these awards is based on a GPA of 2.75 or better. The award is a residence hall room in certain residence halls, double occupancy, and a meal plan for the academic year. The awards are renewable, based on continuing GPA. Incoming students cannot receive both the NRTW and a Room and Board Scholarship. ON-CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT All international students are eligible to work on-campus part-time jobs, available to registered full-time students. The on-campus employment program is administered through the Career Center Services. Note that on-campus employment will help with costs but cannot pay for your expenses in total, and competition for on-campus jobs is high. Contact (208) 282-2380.
