What do you usually do to make sure that a source is reliable?

KNOWLEDGE RESISTANCE

There are people who truly believe that the earth is flat, that the moon landing was faked, and that lizard people control the world. The overwhelming amount of scientific proof does nothing to convince them otherwise. The term used to describe this is knowledge resistance. We resist facts and evidence and instead we choose to believe what we want to believe. Knowledge resistance can be explained by taking a closer look at how our brains are wired to take in information.

Let’s say that you come across an article about someone who believes the earth to be flat, and your interest is piqued. You proceed to type “flat earth” in your search bar to find more information and click on a few links where so called “flat earthers” explain their theory. The content recommendations you get will rank information about the earth being flat higher, because this is the information you sought out. When the same information is repeated over and over, we tend to believe it – even if it’s completely false. This phenomenon is called the illusory truth effect. False information gives the illusion of being accurate, just by being repeated enough times.

Confirmation Bias and the Backfire Effect

Now imagine that your investigation into flat earth theory has made you question the shape of our planet: It’s not round, it’s a disc! Most likely you’ll seek out and trust information that confirms this belief, while dismissing any contradicting views. This psychological phenomenon is called confirmation bias. We like to be right, so when someone agrees with us, we believe them.

Have you ever had a disagreement with a parent or sibling when you knew that they might be right, but you stood your ground and refused to admit it? The backfire effect is a common psychological phenomenon to describe what happens when people are forced to defend their ideas or beliefs. Instead of changing their point of view it backfires, and their conviction is strengthened.

Does it matter what we believe?

The amount of information we are subjected to requires us to be critical of the sources we use, and to be aware of some of the pitfalls when we process information. Perhaps it doesn’t seem like a big deal if you believe that NASA has lied about the shape of our planet, but constantly distrusting official sources or science can be dangerous. If

you believe that the government is poisoning you with medicines, then you might not get the treatment you need. If you believe inaccurate information about climate change, why would you make an effort to reduce or recycle waste? If you believe that elections are rigged, why bother with voting, or even respecting democracy?

U.S poll in 2019:

4% believe that reptilians control the world.

6% believe that the moon landing was faked.

15% believe that the government adds secret mind controlling technology to television broadcast signals.

16% believe that the Earth is flat.

TAG TEAM DEBATE

A Tag Team Debate is a form of discussion where you work in a team to present arguments to convince the audience of your point of view. An opposing team will present counter arguments. At the end of the debate, the audience will have the opportunity to vote for the team that influenced them the most.

Your teacher will divide you into teams, explain the different steps and rules, and hand you a debate topic in the form of a statement. The statement is based on a particular conspiracy theory. Another team will have the same topic, and your teacher will decide if your team has to defend the conspiracy theory or debunk it.

PREFIXES

A prefix is a group of letters we add to the beginning of the word to make a new word.

Example:

dis + agree = disagree

prefix new word root word

It is useful to know the meaning of the most common prefixes. It expands your vocabulary and helps you understand words you have never heard before.

Match the prefixes from the left box with the root words from the right box, to make new words with a changed meaning. Then write two lists where you translate the root words as well as the new words.

Can you think of any other prefixes in English? What are some of the most common prefixes in Swedish? Are any of them the same in English and Swedish? Discuss with a classmate.

Test yourself, or challenge a classmate, to see how many words with prefixes you can list. Translate them into Swedish.

CREATE YOUR OWN CONSPIRACY THEORY

If thousands of people believe that the earth is flat or that lizard people are in charge of everything, it’s more than likely that you could make up a conspiracy theory from scratch and gain a few supporters. This is what you need:

1. A problem

An everyday problem that people can relate to, but not immediately explain.

2. A villain

It can be a powerful individual, an organization, or another country. It’s also quite effective to point a finger to a group of people, or a combination of two groups of people.

3. A motive

The villain behind the conspiracy needs to gain something. It could be either money, world domination or to cover up an even bigger conspiracy.

4. Connect the dots

Everything in the world is connected if you just connect it. There are no coincidences. Figure out what evidence there could be against your conspiracy and find flaws in the evidence, or simply reject the evidence as untrue and part of the cover up.

A mindmap to organize your ideas is a good way to start. Try out your conspiracy theory on someone by explaining it before you start writing your text. Add details and point out obvious evidence to make your conspiracy theory sound believable. Be confident, you know the truth – you just have to make others see it too!

CONSPIRITUALIT Y – Magical Thinking in Uncertain Times

Have you ever come across an article or a social media post where you were encouraged to boost your immune system? Perhaps it was accompanied by a seductive image of a juicy orange, some colorful berries or a garlic clove. It might surprise you to know that boosting your immune system by eating fruit isn’t possible; it’s a widespread misconception about how the immune system works, and not rooted in actual science. The symptoms you get when you have a cold, like a fever or a runny nose, are signs that show that your immune system is working like it should – and not signs that you need to boost anything.

You might wonder how this relates to any conspiracies. Being told to eat more oranges seems completely harmless, and it is. However, there is a difference between eating an orange because it tastes good and eating it because you believe it will protect you from illness, or even cure you. A closer look at the wellness industry and some of the more extreme ideas it entails reveal the same mistrust against science that is evident among flat earthers or other conspiracy theorists.

CONSPIRACY THEORIES STRETCH

A New Lifestyle for Sale

The wellness industry consists of a wide range of companies that provide activities, services and products meant to enhance your physical and mental health. It can be anything from gym equipment and yoga classes to aroma therapy candles and healing crystals, as well as natural remedies for aches and pains.

At the beginning of the Covid pandemic the medical community and the authorities didn’t have all the answers when it came to tackling a new virus, and the uncertainty led many to look for answers elsewhere. This is where the wellness industry stepped in and offered alternatives to conventional science, not seldom through influencers promoting “natural” products and a lifestyle where both your body and soul need enhancement and empowerment to stay healthy.

Natural vs Unnatural Choices

These “natural” alternatives are not new. People have experimented with homemade remedies since the beginning of time, but as we’ve learned more and more about the body and medicine, these remedies have become sidelined by scientists and doctors. There are, however, two main groups of people who seek out alternative medicines or treatments. There are those who have a “better safe than sorry”-mentality and combine modern and alternative medicines, and then there are those who make active lifestyle choices to avoid modern medicine for fear of poisons, chemicals and “unnatural” substances.

STRETCH
