WELCOME UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE STUDENTS Thank you so much for picking up your free copy of the student planner and handbook. Inside you’ll find tons of useful resources, such as on-campus information pages, goal and habit tracking tools, your academic day planner from this August through next July, puzzles, games, brain teasers, and of course, exclusive deals and discounts from local businesses around Newark and beyond who support you and your fellow students. We realize that this Spring and early Summer were chaotic and uncertain. We hope that this student planner will help you take control of your academics this year. Many of the local businesses around the Newark and Wilmington areas were hit hard in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, and they’ve missed having UD students like you to support them. We hope that as you begin your brand new school year, whether this is your first year as a college student, you’ll be graduating in a few months, or if you’re somewhere in between, that you’ll take the time to explore the businesses around the University of Delaware and support them like they support you. Have a wonderful academic year! Make new friends, venture outside of your comfort zone, try new things, and study hard. Use this planner to stay organized and on top of your goals. Be well, be healthy, get enough sleep, and be safe this year. Best of luck and enjoy your 2020-2021 academic year! All the best, Student Media Group

2020-21 VISION BOARD
Vision boards are an amazing tool to help you identify, visualize and achieve any goals you have for yourself. Visualization is one of the most powerful mind exercises you can do! It’s also not just fun, it’s science! People with written out visions and goals are 50% more likely to accomplish them than those that keep them in their head. Tape or glue anything that inspires you over this text to create your vision board and start making 2020-21 your best year ever. Here are some of our best tips for success! • There aren’t any rules! Your board can be focused in one specific category, or cover multiple goals for the year. • Need help getting started? Think about potential goals in the following categories: personal growth, relationships, health and fitness, family & home, work/school, finances, fun and adventure. • Focus not just on things you want, but how you want to feel. It’s OK to include something that just makes you feel happy vs. having a specific ‘purpose’ (ex. include a picture from a past vacation even if you don’t plan on taking a similar trip this year, just because it makes you feel happy and calm!) • Check back to your vision board page often! The more you see it, the more it will affect you. • Share it with friends! Sharing your goals takes your likeliness of accomplishing them from 50% to 90%! This gives you accountability partners AND cheerleaders along your path to success.

DAILY MEDITATION Benefits of meditation include decreased stress, higher brain function, more effective decision making and increased attention span. Use these steps to start benefiting from regular meditation today.
1.
2.
FIND A QUIET SPOT You don't want to be disturbed.
SIT COMFORTABLY Keep a straight but relaxed back. Relax your shoulders, arms and legs.
7.
3.
PRACTICE DAILY Make meditation a habit. Use our tracker below and see how many streaks you can get.
FOCUS ON YOUR BREATH Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose, filling your belly like a balloon. Exhale slowy through your mouth.
6.
4.
AIM FOR 5 MINUTES EACH DAY If that’s too much, start with 1 and work your way up.
5. RETURN TO YOUR BREATH As your thoughts pass, bring your attention back to the present by focusing on your inhales and exhales.
NOTICE YOUR THOUGHTS It’s natural to have your mind race during a meditation. Don’t fight or judge your thoughts, simply notice what pops up.
Meditate daily and mark off each day. See how long of a streak you can get going and notice the change in your energy daily. 1

JOB INTERVIEWING 1. RESEARCH PREVIOUS EMPLOYEES Knowing what the company is looking for in someone's skill set or resume can help you focus on what to highlight in your interview. By finding people (on LinkedIn or InDeed.com) who actually got the job and by scanning their public resume, you can get an idea of what you need to do to get where they are/were.
2. DRESS APPROPRIATELY Keep your outfit modest, professional, and neutral in color (nothing distracting, bright or overly patterned.) If you choose to wear heels, make sure you can walk in them before walking in to the building.
3. ARRIVE EARLY But not too early; let your interviewer prep for your arrival. 10 minutes early is perfect.
4. RELAX AND BREATHE Be yourself, slow down your breathing, and speak slowly and clearly. Don't tap your fingers, shake your feet, or click your pen. Keep your hands in a relaxed position on your lap,
5. FOCUS ON WHAT YOU BRING TO THE COMPANY The interview isn't really about you, it's about service to the company. Know their story and explain how you can add to it (get specific if you can!)
6. HAVE A POSITIVE, FRIENDLY ATTITUDE No one wants to bring someone onto their team that complains, is arrogant, or expects to receive without giving first.
7. DON'T INTERRUPT THE INTERVIEWER Interrupting (even if you want to branch off specifically about a talking point) means that you aren't fully listening to what the interviewer is saying. Wait until they are finished with the thought first.
8. DON'T GET ATTACHED Remember that it's just as important that you feel like the company is a good fit for your as you are a good fit for them. An interview is a two way road; be prepared to ask questions, too.
9. EXPRESS YOUR INTEREST IN THE JOB Close the interview by asking what the next steps are.
10. SEND A THANK YOU FOLLOW UP Be sure to email your appreciation for their time and/or write a thank you card to your interviewer(s) within 24 hours.

CARE PACKAGE IDEAS HOT CHOCOLATE OR HOT TEA These are a great alternative if someone is not a coffee lover. Add in a bag of marshmallows or a honey bear for a sweet treat! SINGLE SERVE COFFEE MAKER All students love a good caffeine fix. If you can find one that makes coffee into a travel mug, even better! A COZY BLANKET A cozy throw blanket is great for those colder days and nights. Great for studying, watching TV or just hanging out with friends and chatting (perhaps over a cup of cocoa or hot tea?). ALL IN ONE PLANNER The Ultimate Notebook by bloom daily planners is great for planning, to-do lists, note taking, doodling and coloring pages...All in one place! www.bloomplanners.com HOMEMADE GOODIES Let’s face it, who doesn’t love homemade treats from home! If you can’t send something homemade, consider sending some treats from home they can’t get at school.
20 DEL Business Guide pgs 1-32.indd 8
GIFT CARDS These are always a great idea and will get plenty of use! Send one for a local grocery store or restaurant. Eating at the dining hall can get boring. This alternative will be a great pick me up! DON’T FORGET THE HOLIDAYS Consider sending a holiday themed care package! Sending Halloween candy, decorations, Christmas cookies or Hanukkah treats are always a big hit. WELLNESS PACKAGE No one likes being sick when they are far from home. Sending some tissues, chicken soup, cough drops/meds or hot teas are always great to have on hand. LETTERS Send a handwritten letter or note with your package. Nothing makes it more personal than a heartfelt letter or note from a loved one to cheer them up! GAMES Games are a great way to bring everyone together and meet new people!

• Use power strips to switch off televisions, m/ ph stereos and other electronics when you’re not using oto s/a them. Even when you think these products are off, together, their nto nfo “standby” consumption can be equivalent to that of a 75 or 100 mk i watt light bulb running continuously. • Enable the “sleep mode” feature on your computer so it uses less power when you’re not using it for short periods of time. When you’re done for the day, shut it down completely.
• During cold seasons, leave shades and blinds open on sunny days, but close them at night to reduce the amount of heat lost through windows. Close shades and blinds during the summer, or when the air conditioner is in use, to keep it cool. • Wash only full loads in your dishwasher. Use short cycles unless your dishes are really water and energy efficient. Air-drying dishes can also reduce energy use. • In your clothes washer, set the appropriate water level for the size of the load and wash in cold water whenever you can. Clean the lint filter in your dryer after each use to keep it running most efficiently. • Don’t forget to turn off the lights when you leave a room!

it Building Cred OUTSIDE of the Classroom mpus Plan-It
Brought to you by Ca
Other than four years’ worth of memories and an impressive college degree, a good credit history is one of the most important things you can take with you upon graduation. The financial habits you develop in college (good OR bad) will be tracked and computed into your personal credit score.
CREDIT SCORES ARE IMPORTANT WHEN YOU: • Rent an apartment- Most rental properties have a minimum credit score that applicants are required to meet before they may be considered for approval. • Need a loan- Most people need to take out a loan when they make a major purchase like a house or a car. Monthly payments and the amount of inter est a person must pay are determined by their credit worthiness. • Apply for a job- Some employers may request to check your credit score to determine whether or not you’re responsible.
TAKE SIMPLE STEPS IN COLLEGE TO START BUILDING GOOD CREDIT BY: • Using a credit card. Have one or two credit cards (no more than that!) to use for buying groceries or gas. Only make purchases that you can afford to pay off each month. • Paying your bills on time and in full. One of the easiest ways to get your credit on the right track is by paying all of your bills promptly and by paying the entire balance due each month.
Check out our “Bank and Finance” section for local credit-building businesses!
