WELCOME UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL FLORIDA STUDENTS! Thank you so much for picking up your free copy of the student planner and handbook for 2021-22. Inside, you’ll find tons of useful resources, such as on-campus information pages, goal and habit tracking tools, your academic day planner from this August through next July, puzzles, games, brain teasers, and of course, exclusive deals and discounts from local businesses around Orlando who support you and your fellow students. As we’ve all learned over the last year, life can sometimes be uncertain. We hope that this student planner will at least help you take control of your academics. Many families and businesses around Orlando were hit hard in 2020, and they missed having students like you to support them. Whether this is your first year, or you’ll be graduating, or you’re somewhere in between, we hope that you’ll take the time to explore the community around UCF with your friends, and support local businesses like they support you. Have a wonderful academic year! Make new friends, venture outside of your comfort zone, try new things, and study hard. Use this planner to stay organized and an on top of your goals - and crush them. Be well, be healthy, get enough sleep, and be safe this year. Best of luck, and enjoy your 2021-2022 academic year! Charge On! All the best, Student Media Group

JOB INTERVIEWING 1. RESEARCH PREVIOUS EMPLOYEES Knowing what the company is looking for in someone's skill set or resume can help you focus on what to highlight in your interview. By finding people (on LinkedIn or InDeed.com) who actually got the job and by scanning their public resume, you can get an idea of what you need to do to get where they are/were.
2. DRESS APPROPRIATELY Keep your outfit modest, professional, and neutral in color (nothing distracting, bright or overly patterned.) If you choose to wear heels, make sure you can walk in them before walking in to the building.
3. ARRIVE EARLY But not too early; let your interviewer prep for your arrival. 10 minutes early is perfect.
4. RELAX AND BREATHE Be yourself, slow down your breathing, and speak slowly and clearly. Don't tap your fingers, shake your feet, or click your pen. Keep your hands in a relaxed position on your lap,
5. FOCUS ON WHAT YOU BRING TO THE COMPANY The interview isn't really about you, it's about service to the company. Know their story and explain how you can add to it (get specific if you can!)
6. HAVE A POSITIVE, FRIENDLY ATTITUDE No one wants to bring someone onto their team that complains, is arrogant, or expects to receive without giving first.
7. DON'T INTERRUPT THE INTERVIEWER Interrupting (even if you want to branch off specifically about a talking point) means that you aren't fully listening to what the interviewer is saying. Wait until they are finished with the thought first.
8. DON'T GET ATTACHED Remember that it's just as important that you feel like the company is a good fit for your as you are a good fit for them. An interview is a two way road; be prepared to ask questions, too.
9. EXPRESS YOUR INTEREST IN THE JOB Close the interview by asking what the next steps are.
10. SEND A THANK YOU FOLLOW UP Be sure to email your appreciation for their time and/or write a thank you card to your interviewer(s) within 24 hours.
2021-22 VISION BOARD
Vision boards are an amazing tool to help you identify, visualize and achieve any goals you have for yourself. Visualization is one of the most powerful mind exercises you can do! It’s also not just fun, it’s science! People with written out visions and goals are 50% more likely to accomplish them than those that keep them in their head. Tape or glue anything that inspires you over this text to create your vision board and start making this your best year ever. Here are some of our best tips for success!

DAILY MEDITATION Benefits of meditation include decreased stress, higher brain function, more effective decision making and increased attention span. Use these steps to start benefiting from regular meditation today.
1.
2.
FIND A QUIET SPOT You don't want to be disturbed.
SIT COMFORTABLY Keep a straight but relaxed back. Relax your shoulders, arms and legs.
7.
3.
PRACTICE DAILY Make meditation a habit. Use our tracker below and see how many streaks you can get.
FOCUS ON YOUR BREATH Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose, filling your belly like a balloon. Exhale slowy through your mouth.
6.
4.
AIM FOR 5 MINUTES EACH DAY If that’s too much, start with 1 and work your way up.
5. RETURN TO YOUR BREATH As your thoughts pass, bring your attention back to the present by focusing on your inhales and exhales.
NOTICE YOUR THOUGHTS It’s natural to have your mind race during a meditation. Don’t fight or judge your thoughts, simply notice what pops up.
Meditate daily and mark off each day. See how long of a streak you can get going and notice the change in your energy daily. 1

HABIT TRACKING We all face choices every day that will either lead us towards our values and desired identity or away from them. Develop small, effective habits that constantly guide you towards larger goals by listing the habits you would like to create. Color the corresponding square when you perform the habit each day. After one month, you'll have 10 new habits to help you be your best you.

CARE PACKAGE IDEAS HOT CHOCOLATE OR HOT TEA These are a great alternative if someone is not a coffee lover. Add in a bag of marshmallows or a honey bear for a sweet treat! SINGLE SERVE COFFEE MAKER All students love a good caffeine fix. If you can find one that makes coffee into a travel mug, even better! A COZY BLANKET A cozy throw blanket is great for those colder days and nights. Great for studying, watching TV or just hanging out with friends and chatting (perhaps over a cup of cocoa or hot tea?). ALL IN ONE PLANNER The Ultimate Notebook by bloom daily planners is great for planning, to-do lists, note taking, doodling and coloring pages...All in one place! www.bloomplanners.com HOMEMADE GOODIES! Let’s face it, who doesn’t love homemade treats from home! If you can’t send something home made, consider sending some treats from home they can’t get at school.
UCF21 business guide pgs 1-36.indd 7
GIFT CARDS These are always a great idea and will get plenty of use! Send one for a local grocery store or restaurant. Eating at the dining hall can get boring. This alternative will be a great pick me up!
DON’T FORGET THE HOLIDAYS Consider sending a holiday themed care package! Sending Halloween candy, decorations, Christmas cookies or Hanukkah treats are always a big hit. WELLNESS PACKAGE No one likes being sick when they are far from home. Sending some tissues, chicken soup, cough drops/meds or hot teas are always great to have on hand. LETTERS Send a handwritten letter or note with your package. Nothing makes it more personal than a heartfelt letter or note from a loved one to cheer them up!

• Be Easy On Your Engine. The most wear to your car happens in the first 10-20 minutes of operation. Avoid accelerating quickly, especially in extremely hot, cold or humid weather. Try to consolidate multiple errands into one trip. • Avoid Heavy Keychains. Heavy keychains that bounce around while you drive wear out the tumblers inside your ignition and can lead to ignition switch failure. Use a lightweight key chain or a detachable keychain that you can remove while driving. • Don’t Top Off! Topping off your tank is bad for your car, the environment, and your wallet. Gasoline needs extra space to expand. If you overfill, the extra gas can spill out or evaporate into your car or out onto the ground, damaging the ozone. Stop pumping as soon as the automatic nozzle clicks off. • Tighten You Gas Cap. According to Car Care Council, 147 million gallons of gas evaporate from loose or broken gas caps each year! Tighten up your gas cap every time you fill up to make your gas last longer. • Tire Lifespan Down 15%! Underinflated tires can bring your gas mileage and tire lifespan down up to 15%! Check your owner’s manual to find the ideal tire pressure for your vehicle and stick to that number. • Get Regular Tune Ups. Fixing an out of tune engine can boost gas mileage up to 4%! Getting regular check ups can also find other problems like misfiring spark plugs which can reduce a car’s fuel efficiency by as much as 30%. • Replace Air Filters. Replacing clogged air filters can improve your gas mileage by as much as 10%! The Car Care Council recommends changing your car’s air and oil filters about every three months or 3,000 miles.

Healthy Eating 101 Brought to you by Campus
Plan-It
• Don’t Skip Meals. It’s easy to forgo a meal when you have a million things on your schedule, but eating three well-balanced meals throughout the day is important for your health. Make sure to “refuel” every few hours to help regulate your metabolism, improve your concentration and energy levels, and prevent overeating later. • Have a Variety of Easy, Healthy Snacks Available. You’ll be much less tempted to munch on chips and candy if you keep your room stocked with nutritional, satisfying alternatives. Some ideas include: whole grain crackers, fresh fruit and veggies, unsalted nuts, high fiber cereal, or oatmeal.
• Don’t Be Too Drastic! Becoming a healthier eater doesn’t mean you have to suddenly change your entire lifestyle. Extreme changes will be much harder to stick with in the long run. Check out our “Food & Dining” and “Health, Fitness & Medical” sections for healthy places around your university!
Looking for an internship? JOIN THE FUN!
• Enlist Your Friends. Share your goal of eating healthier with your friends and roommates. Oftentimes, they’ll be inspired to make positive changes with you. Motivate each other by finding great recipes on Pinterest to share or by taking turns cooking each other a healthy meal.
Apply Online! studentmediagroup.com/internships
• Stay Hydrated. All other obvious benefits aside, drinking plenty of water is key to maintaining a proper diet. Studies have shown that the sensation of thirst is commonly misinterpreted as hunger. Drink a full glass of water whenever you feel hungry and wait several minutes—if you’re still craving food, reach for one of the healthy snacks listed above. Also, be sure to drink water frequently during the day.
