OUTWARD
Outward is a trend publication which focuses on outdoor lifestyle trends. The trends are influenced by many different industries, including tourism and leisure. In this issue, we explore three different lifestyles, all with the same basic theme of being outdoors. Outward has collaborated with the outdoor performance wear company Montane速. In this issue we will showcase how a lifestyle trend can inform and be translated into a clothing capsule, whilst still being appropriate for a specific industry.

Laid back Nature Back to basics Peaceful Escape Countryside Walking
A muddy pair of walking boots sit outside the door of a log cabin. A pile of collected wood lies next to the remnants of an old fire. The breeze carries the scent of the surrounding woodland. Peace. This trend is all about being in touch with nature. With the uprising stresses of everyday life taking its toll, more people are choosing the simple life. Technology is an ever increasing phenomenon which is driving people to escape. Being outdoors has its therapeutic effects and is a well-known stress repellant. This trend embraces the stripped back log cabin life and the simple pleasures. Walking for leisure is something that is
becoming more popular as people are realising that being outdoors is a way of escaping from technology. In a recent survey about being outdoors, all those questioned said that they either sometimes take a break from technology, or often take a break from technology by getting outside and walking. Others described walking outdoors as a stress repellent and a way to clear their mind of worries. Research has also found 1
that instead of using GPS technology to follow trails, people are going back to using the traditional map. Sales of the paper maps were up by over 500,000 from 2013 to 2014, which reversed a downward trend for the first time.

“Walking is my escape” S
ometimes everyday life can get the better of you; early mornings, late nights and long tiring days. Leisure time seems to be merging with work time, as technology is always keeping them connected. The divide between home life and work life is becoming less distinct, and free time is not being spent how it should be. Getting out into the open air regularly is a proven health booster, and a great way disconnect from technology. It not only releases stress and gives you time to unwind, but it’s also good for your health. Walking is a great way to incorporate exercise into your life whilst also making you happy. It has been shown in studies that walking can be as effective as anti-depressants, as being active releases feel-good endorphins into the bloodstream. There are many other benefits you can gain from walking regularly, including strengthening your heart, lowering your risk of diseases and boosting your vitamin D levels. We interviewed avid walker and member of the ‘Ramblers’ group Chelsie, to hear what she gains from walking.
How often to you take walks, or spend time outside?
and use as little packaging as possible to protect the environment which I gain so much from.
I try to go for a walk at least once a day. I can never go two days in a row without going for a walk.
Why do you think walking reduces stress?
Why do you choose to walk so often? I love to walk and be outside, it’s something which is part of my routine and I think if I didn’t spend so much time outside, I would start to go crazy. Walking is my escape from the stresses I face on a day to day basis. It makes me feel liberated and free. How do you feel walking has changed your life? My life has been so much better since I started walking regularly. I’ve noticed that I’ve got more energy, I’m healthier and I also feel like I’ve made a real connection with the open air and nature. I appreciate it so much more than I used to, which has made me more conscious about the environment, and I do my best to recycle 3
Well any form of exercise can reduce stress. But walking especially because it’s not too strenuous and you can do it outside in the open. As humans, we’re not meant to be cooped up inside all the time, it’s natural for us to be outside, and that’s why being outside often can help relieve stress. What would you say to someone who does not go outside and walk regularly? I would say that it is definitely something you should build into your routine. It will change your life for the better, in so many different ways. If you want to lose weight it’s great. If you just want to get fitter and healthier, it’s great. Or if you tend to get stressed quite frequently, it will ease your mind. Whether it’s walking around the block, or following a trail. Get out there and try it.

Adventure Travel Aspirations Maps Trails
Zip up your backpack. Check you have your tickets. Close the door behind you‌.Off you go. The aspiration to travel is something that many people possess. This aspiration is becoming reality for more people as travelling is more affordable and accessible than ever before. Whether it is a short weekend away in the UK, a long haul holiday to an exotic location, or a year of travelling the world, each adventure has its own personal meaning. This trend encompasses that desire to experience new places and the sense of adventure that comes with it. After a rise in youth unemployment, more young
people are choosing to travel to enhance their life experiences, and make them stand out for future employment. Travelling can often inspire people to ‘find themselves’, and make them realise who they are, and what they want, and in this time of global economic austerity, this is a valuable thing to know. Travelling solo has also become a growing trend in the UK, as more than a third of people questioned in a survey said they were planning a solo trip in the near future. 19

Scandinavia
European Clean Crisp Fresh Simple Calming
The grey blanket of a sky hung above the snow covered mountain tops. The air was clean and crisp, and the pine trees swayed in the chilly wind. The Scandinavian lifestyle is one which influences many cultures. Laid back, friendly atmospheres and breathtakingly beautiful scenery is what epitomises Scandinavia. There has been an up rise of holidaying to Northern Europe in the past few years and the merging of cultures is becoming more apparent. Clean and simple designs in interiors and fashion somehow reflect the picturesque landscapes. This trend embraces all that is Scandinavia, and appreciates its beauty.
81% of UK holidays are taken in Europe, and there has been a recent surge in trips to the Scandinavian countries. Hotel bookings in Norway were up 37% in the first quarter of 2014, and tour operators have experienced a 40% sales increase. This dramatic increase in tourism to Northern Europe will no doubt influence future lifestyle trends, as people bring back their experiences of these amazing countries.
