Harrower’s first book, “The Newspaper Designer’s Handbook,” has been a fixture in newsrooms and classrooms around the world, translated into Russian, Chinese and Polish. His followup, “Inside Reporting,” is America’s most popular journalism textbook.

Harrower has been an editor, designer and columnist at newspapers large (The Oregonian), midsized (The Rochester Times-Union) and small (the Times weekly in Beaverton, Ore.). He became a journalist in the ’80s after his first career choice — rock ’n’ roll superlegend — fizzled out.

Gail Rosenblum Your Big, Fat Journalism Career?

Joe Grimm teaches and works with student groups as a visiting journalist at Michigan State University’s School of Journalism. He was newsroom recruiter and staff development editor at the Detroit Free Press from 1990 until 2008. During those years, he also worked with corporate recruiting teams at Gannett and Knight Ridder. He has interviewed hundreds of people, reviewed thousands of job candidates on paper and recruited at hundreds of job fairs and college campus career days. In 1993, he established an annual jobs fair in Detroit. In 1997, he launched the JobsPage, a journalism career site, at www.jobspage.com. He spun off a journalism careers blog, “Ask the Recruiter” in 2003. It became part of Poynter Online’s Career Center in 2006. He has been a regular contributor to Editor & Publisher magazine, the Newspaper Association of America’s Fusion magazine, UNITY: Journalists of Color and a technology website.

The World Will Always Need Storytellers — Only the Form Will Change Gail Rosenblum is a Metro Columnist for the Minneapolis Star Tribune, writing two to three columns a week on people, issues and trends. She joined the Star Tribune in 2000 as Variety Team Leader, and returned to full-time writing in 2005, covering the unique “relationships” beat. She was named a columnist in 2009. Before coming to the Star Tribune, Rosenblum worked for nearly 20 years as a reporter, editor and essayist for many newspapers and national magazines, focusing on family issues and women’s health. Her writing has garnered awards from the Associated Press, American Association of Sunday and Features Editors, and the Society of Professional Journalists in Minnesota and Texas. Her first book of collected essays on motherhood, marriage and mortality, titled “A Hundred Lives Since Then,” will be published this Spring (2011) by Nodin Press.

Registration opens Friday at 12:30 p.m. Plan to arrive in time to get settled. These sessions will feature dynamic speakers who will help you set the tone for the weekend of motivation and improving your craft.

• 3-4:30 p.m. Creating an Ethical Culture in the Newsroom. Chris Ison, University of Minnesota School of Journalism and Mass Communication and winner of the Pulitzer Prize. No preregistration or additional fee required.

The opening keynote and reception follow these Friday afternoon sessions. Saturday is packed with a full day of learning seminars and critiques. Stay with us for Sunday morning’s closing, including the Best of the Midwest Awards for general newspaper excellence and individual categories.

Compete to be Best of the Midwest! Bring copies of any edition from this year for the convention Best of Show competition. Categories are divided by frequency of publication as well as two- and four-year distinctions; special issues/sections and for websites. Do not send entries to ACP prior to the convention. Entries will be accepted only on site. In addition to ACP Best of Show for general newspaper excellence, student delegates to this convention can also compete for individual awards in news writing, editorial/commentary writing, feature writing, sports writing, singlepage design, news photography and multimedia package. Only one entry per person per category. Students must be registered at the convention to enter the contest. Entries are due by 10 a.m. Saturday. Use the enclosed form or download from the ACP website. Submit URLs to Kathy Huting at kathy@studentpress.org between Jan. 30 and Feb. 10. After Feb. 10, submit URLs on site.

Saturday Critique Sessions How are you doing compared to your peers or professionals? Want honest feedback so you can do better work? Saturday’s program has critique sessions for writing and overall newspaper content/visuals. Bring samples of a story for a writing critique or a couple issues for an overall newspaper critique. Then listen and learn to get some practical advice and answers.

Résumé/Clips Review We’re bringing in hiring experts to look at your clips, résumés, and even help you with mock interviews. Find out what you need to add to your portfolio, how to get an editor’s attention, what that company looks for in a candidate and more.

Networking/Exchange Lounge In addition to your contest entries, bring extra copies — a couple dozen or so — of your best papers, ad rate cards and marketing

materials for display in the lounge and to exchange with other students. This is your opportunity to see what your peers are reporting and get some design, coverage and sales ideas. We’ll set aside a spot for networking and sharing of information throughout the convention.

Editor/Adviser Luncheon Adviser delegates and current, former or future student editors are invited to an informal luncheon hosted by ACP at 12:15 p.m. Saturday in the hotel. Luncheons are $25 per person and can be purchased on the convention registration form. It’s another chance to network with your colleagues and enjoy some excellent food.

Minneapolis: City of Many Options Minneapolis is recognized as one of the cultural and entertainment capitals of the United States, a modern city perched on the west side of the Mississippi River. Its downtown area is the heart of the Twin Cities, and many downtown buildings are linked by enclosed overhead “skyways.” The convention hotel, the Marriott City Center, is conveniently close to everything downtown and connected to the skyways (so even if the weather’s not wonderful, you can still have fun). Block E, the huge entertainment complex across the street on First Avenue, houses a movie theater, Shout House, Hard Rock Café and other restaurants. The Hiawatha Line light rail station one block away will take you directly to the Mall of America for as little as $1.75. Whether you love music, theater or art, fine dining or funky restaurants, big department stores or unusual boutiques, Minneapolis has it all.

Marriott City Center Hotel All convention sessions will be held at the convention headquarters, the Marriott City Center Hotel. Ideally situated in the heart of downtown, the hotel is connected by the city’s enclosed skyway to shopping, restaurants, movies, theater and live music—all within a few blocks of the hotel. Just one block away is the Hiawatha Line light rail system, which can take you directly to the Mall of America for as little as $1.75. ACP has secured a $109 per night room rate for single or double occupancy for convention delegates. It’s just tinyurl.com/marriottcityctr $10 more for triple or quad occupancy. Wireless Internet is available in the hotel’s great room. Reserve your rooms early—the deadline is Jan. 26. Reservations made after the deadline will be accepted by fax, by phone or online if space is available. Please call the hotel for availability after that date. Mention the Associated Collegiate Press Best of the Midwest Convention to get the group rates. Self-parking in the City Center parking ramp is $12 on weekends (rates subject to change). Check-in time is 3 p.m.; checkout time is noon. Early arrivals will be accommodated if rooms are available, otherwise luggage may be stored at the bell stand.
