“FESTIVAL of the Dead infuses elements of carnival, circus, theatre and unadulterated partying to bring you a fiesta like no other.

Trainspotting THE hype half-life is still strong after the release of the movie Trainspotting 2.

Many were sceptical about whether it was necessary and whether it would be able to match the iconic first instalment.

Danny Boyle and the cast blew expectations out of the water and served something fast-paced, funny and full of pathos.

Oktoberfest OKTOBERFEST you say? Jawohl! Get your Bavarian on and drink beer by the stein-full (a stein being a glass that, when converted to metric measurements comes out at approximately one cubic bucket).

Having said that, Oktoberfest is more refined than just getting hammered; and it does offer some slight cultural insight into the traditional German celebration.

As well as the beer, there will also be plenty of German cuisine on offer – mostly meat and cabbage based yet still delicious.

Cardboard Box Charging Station A COMMON problem with sharing living areas is that chargers and other cables will very quickly resemble a plate of stale spaghetti.

A creative way to avoid this is to make a charging station.

All you need is a cardboard box, sticky tape, scissors, and a few coloured pens.

Ring Pull Coat Hanger Extender UNIVERSITY dorms aren’t exactly renowned for their closet space, right?

This ingenius little device can make trying to fit all your clothes into your teensy wardrobe pretty challenging.

Instead of having to struggle with attempting to cram clothes in every day, use the tabs from cans.

Next time you’re having a can of coke, carefully snap it off, then slip it onto the hook of your hanger.

You will now be able to put another hanger through the tab, maximising your wardrobe space.

Headboard with storage A GOOD way to utilise space is adding storage to places you might not have thought about. One of these is your headboard.

It is pretty easy to find a headboard with shelves, and they are definitely worth investing in. You can store pretty much anything; make-up, books, plants, even food for when you want a midnight snack!

Ikea offers different coloured head boards or you could shop around eBay or Gumtree to find a bargain.

Place your charging bar inside the box, cut enough small holes in the side of the box for the amount of cables you have, and hey presto, you are done!

If you want you can use coloured pens and paper to decorate and make it look more attractive.

Muji drawers

MUJI is known for its simplistic and minimalistic approach to storage.

One of their best sellers is their acrylic drawers. As they are transparent, you can quickly identify what you need and where it is.

They come in a variety of sizes, so you can store a variety of things, such as make-up, stationery, or even cutlery.

A downside is Muji aren’t exactly cheap.

If you don’t want to drop that much cash, then look on Amazon or pop into your nearest TK Maxx, as they offer far less expensive alternatives.

Washi Tape WHEN sharing a room or flat with someone, it’s inevitable that some items will get lost or mixed up, especially things that look identical such as phone chargers.

A clever and cute

way to get around this problem is washi tape.

Choose any colour or pattern that suits you, and wrap it around your cables to avoid future confusion.

An added bonus is it will make your charger look colourful.

Binder clips for cord organisation ANOTHER tip for tangled cables, is using binder clips. Not only are they super easy to find, but they’re also very inexpensive.

Just fasten them onto the side of your desk, and place each cable through the metal hoops. You can buy different colours that match your room. Ooooh!

IT can be hard to plan outfits – you can often be left wishing for Cher’s closet computer from ‘Clueless.’ Until that day comes (please come), there is a pretty cost-effective alternative.

Simply nip into Ikea and pick up a clothing rack for just £6.95.

This will give you the ability to hang up your favourite gear where you can see them, as well as clothes you are trying to wear more often.

We’ve never been spat at! One show was a bit weird. A couple of pairs of shoes were thrown at us at a gig in Cambridge.

We were all sitting back stage thinking ‘was that a good thing?’ Was someone thinking, ‘I’m having such a good time, I’ve taken my shoes off and I’ll throw them on stage?’

Or did they think ‘this is rubbish’?

the Joffuar. I did make a guitar hybrid but it’s rubbish – not very nice at all.

I have a big block of wood at home waiting to be carved into a guitar. It’s my next endeavour.

YOU’RE known for your love of guitars, especially your 1962 Fender Jaguar reissue. Is the Jaguar your baby?

I have more than ten guitars!

My main guitar is the white fender Jaguar and it’s undergone a lot of changes in the last couple of years.

It’s all beat up and disgusting. I bought it second hand on Gumtree from a bloke in America who had just put it to one side for two years.

The black Telecaster Ellie plays is mine. That was my birthday present when I was 14 or 15. It’s rather special.

I’m not precious about Ellie playing it cos electric guitars can take a pounding.

YOU make guitars and have one that’s a Telecaster/Jazz Moster hybrid. Will we be seeing a Joffie guitar in the near future? (laughs) Yeah,

WHO is inspiring you at the moment?

I’m listening to a lot of Philip Glass (1960s composer) at the moment, William Basinski, (avant garde 1980s composer) some ambient neo-classical stuff.

I’ve had a bit of a renaissance in my music. Broken Social Scene and an old Jackson C Frank song, ‘Blues Run the Game’ – a famous song covered by a lot of people like Nick Drake in the Seventies.

Nick’s cover is a very primitive sound.

WHAT music did you grow up listening to?

I grew up on Indie music; The Strokes, The Libertines, Kings of Leon, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The White Stripes.

That was really a fantastic time for music. Also Oasis, The Stone Roses, quintessentially British music.

WAS it important to get a second album out quickly after My Love is Cool was so revered?

Yeah, you have forever to write your first one – we had 23 years!

This one we had two and a half years since our first album and two of those years we were touring.

We finished that in August last year and we had five months to record.

It was a case of knuckling down.

When we finished touring we got in a little rehearsal room five days a week. It was a lot of work.

We took 18 or 19 songs into the studio and came out with 12.

WHAT inspired the material for Visions of Life?

Did you feel pressure to experience things to help with the song-writing?

You can’t force personal experience.

You can make yourself available.

A lot happened to Ellie on a personal level.

ANY songs that are particularly personal to you?

St Purple & Green – it’s a beautiful song that we’ve always believed in strongly and I’m going through a similar thing.

It is about the loss of a loved one and something similar is happening as we speak, to my grandma down in Cornwall.

HOW does Visions of A Life compare to the feel of your debut, My Love is Cool?

The first album felt like a transition away from childhood and growing up and a transition into the first steps that are a little more adult.

Visions of A Life is more the age we are at the moment and the start of being a little more grown up.

Out of the dark YOU all contribute to the album.

Do you all wear your heart on your sleeve when it comes to song-writing?

I think all of us like to be a touch more guarded and think we like to generalise experience and not completely be subjective.

A lot of things on the record everyone experiences such as love, loss and confusion. It’s a nice way of releasing it.

Ellie always says the greatest thing about song-writing is you’re not alone.

EVER tempted to do lead vocals?

I’ll happily leave that to Ellie. I’ve always wanted to but my voice is not really as versatile and strong as Ellie’s.

THE album includes different music genres from punk and rock to grunge and folk. Do you ever think of making more of a genre album?

It would bore us to death! To be honest it’s intentional and not intentional.

When you’re working on a song and the music for a song we try and work out what musical pattern reflects the emotion.

HAS the path been a long one of knocking on doors and gigging to get to this point? What advice do you have for budding musicians?

Me and Ellie were playing to no one for two years. Open mics are a great source for that sort of stuff.

I was in my first year of uni, training to be a primary school teacher when

we were doing that. You’ll never have a point like uni – three years when you’re available to do that. Make the most of that time.

It’s about playing with people and jamming with the friend across the hall so go and have a jam!

YOU once said that some bands making it big were non-mortal rock stars that you couldn’t remotely relate to. Are you there yet?

I don’t care in the slightest. If that’s something you aspire to then that’s weird.

AH, my specialist subject of superheroes, wherein Justice League offers up several superfolk.

Bat-like man, Batman; wonderful woman Wonder Woman; fish person, Aquaman and many more join franchise forces as they look to save the planet from obliteration by the universe’s most evil forces.

Superman never really took off (so to speak) with many left cold from his outings on the big screen and enthusiasm for any Batman features was always going to wane after the brilliance of the majority of the Christopher Nolan trilogy.

Wonder Woman is trying her best to pull everyone up along with her to respectable heights but even she hasn’t quite cemented herself as a hit in the cinema.

As long as this is better than Batman vs. Superman then we are going in the right direction.

WE are now in the movie hinterland of Autumn – after the summer blockbusters and before the Academy Award contenders.

Fear not though, movie-goers, as there is plenty to look forward to this year in the form of detectives, superheroes and psychotic maniacs. Where would we be without those guys?

Expect twisted thrillers, super-hyped reboots and guys in capes. Here’s LUKE HAWKINS’ guide to what’s coming up at a cinema near you.

JOHN Kramer – AKA Jigsaw – is seemingly back from the dead and causing mischief; and by mischief I of course mean he’s brutally torturing and indirectly murdering people.

It is 13 years since the original Saw movie came out and was part of a movement in horror where directors revelled in gruesomeness and even seemed to compete with one another over who could come up with the most creatively disgusting way to show someone expire.

There was something about seeing a beautiful young actor’s face end up looking like scraps in a butcher’s bin that really seemed to strike a chord with audiences.

Weirdos.

BLADE RUNNER 2049 Starring: Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Mackenzie Davis.

Release Date: October 6.

BLADE Runner is one of the most iconic movies of all time, not just in the sci-fi world.

With its bravely avant-garde, grim portrayal of the future it showed a whole new idea of what science fiction film could be.

To reboot such a stylish classic is brave, and the makers know this as they have done everything in their power to keep the legacy untainted.

The lead actor from the original, Harrison Ford, is again involved; A-lister Ryan Gosling takes the lead this time around, the music and sound are shaping up to be simultaneously sinister and cool;

and the trailers have been teasing, minimalist snippets from what looks like an equally bleak interpretation of a worn out future. If puppet aliens,

wise-cracking jedis and zapping laser beams don’t satisfy your sci-fi cravings then Blade Runner 2049 might be just the right tempo for you.

NORSE God and superhero (what a CV that is), Thor, must fight in a gladiatorial contest to save his home and restore justice and peace and all that kinda stuff.

Chris Hemsworth picks up Mjolnir (the hammer) once again as he reprises his role of the hulking great hero.

What’s even more hulking though is The Hulk, who is in Thor’s way and the two must do battle for some reason. . I’ll be honest, I’m no comic book geek and my interest drifts with this kind of thing. I’m sure Thor and Hulk used to be pals but I think they’ve had some sort of soap opera rift since the last time I checked in on those crazy guys.

MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS STARRING: Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Willem Dafoe.

RELEASE DATE: Nov 3.

ANOTHER reboot now as Kenneth Branagh directs and stars in the classic whodunit crime thriller.

Although this is a case for detective and Belgian, Hercule Poirot, this isn’t like the TV series grandparents would always

have on in the background as it went on for seemingly hours.

This version has the likes of Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Willem Dafoe and Olivia Coleman involved.

As with any suspenseful crime drama, subtlety and consideration will play a big part in the film but, as it is a big production, the pace is likely to be sped up a little for the sake of keeping your average audience member forty-seven hooked.

THE MOUNTAIN BETWEEN US

THE SNOWMAN

STARRING: Idris Elba, Kate Winslet.

RELEASE DATE: October 6.

IDRIS Elba and Kate Winslet are the stricken pair who have to survive the wilderness after their plane goes down in stormy weather.

Elba plays Dr Ben Bass and Winslet is opposite him as photographer Alex Martin, who is on her way home to her wedding.

Having ended up in mountainous terrain, the treacherous nature of the landscape and the harsh cold surround the two protagonists as they soon realise that there is no help on the way and that they must rely on themselves to survive.

THE SNOWMAN Stieg Larsson’s “Millennium Trilogy” (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo etc) got a Swedish production and then a Hollywood treatment.

Though this isn’t a Scandinavian production, the film’s style has borrowed heavily from Scandi-noir movie and TV: a lot of darkness, a lot of silence and, as the name suggests, the elements play a big part.

Michael Fassbender is the tortured sleuth trying to keep up with a twisted killer who toys with the police department.

STARRING: Michael Fassbender, Rebecca Ferguson, Val Kilmer.

One of the best experiences is because you have wonderful extra curricular activities. I toured America and visited New York and Harvard.

The Balls are quite cool. I went with other comedians and got in for free because I was performing there.

My girlfriend broke up with me just before my finals which wasn’t so good.

DID you ever try to make your engineering faculty friends laugh in the uni theatre?

I got into trouble once when I made a joke during my presentation and the professor said it wasn’t funny.

MALAYSIAN comedian Harith Iskander was voted the funniest person in the world last year. Does that put pressure on you as part Malaysian to make it a double whammy? (laughs)That thing with Harith being voted funniest person in

the world was very cool. Harith was the first comedian I saw live as a child when I was ten years old. He’s the granddaddy of all Malaysian comedians.

IS your quest to educate people through comedy on Malaysian culture?

Not especially. I’m more interested in the general representation of East Asian’s in the UK. I’m not the tourism board for Malaysia.

AT what age did you realise you could be a comedian?

When I made silly faces and ran around and made people laugh. I’m not a very funny person. I’m a very smart person. I have my moments at being funny.

WHAT do you see Phil Wang doing in the future – The Phil Wang Show?

I’m doing my first tour just now and will be in Glasgow and Edinburgh in November. I’d like a couple more appearances in shows then if I could have a show like Stephen Colbert that would be great. It’s a very tasteful, intelligent, topical chat show.

YOU played the Fringe recently, any memorable things happen in Edinburgh for you?

Not so much but outwith the Fringe I once visited my girlfriend who was studying at Edinburgh.

The fire alarm went off in the middle of the night and I ran out bare feet onto icy-cold cobbles.

Everyone else had thought to put their shoes on but I was scared and confused.

I lost the colour and feeling in the bottom half of my feet and felt stupid. That was memorable. She’s now my ex-girlfriend.

These feet can’t stop the beat Interview: SUSIE DANIELS

W

ALKING down the street is a rhythmic tribal routine for Tamara Schlesinger AKA Malka.

A pound with the left foot conjures the sound of a djembe drum beating in the dense African jungle. And as the right foot lowers onto the urban concrete, sounds reminiscent of euphonious stamping by the sub-Saharan Nguni tribe are cemented within Tamara’s mind.

Tamara says: “Musically I guess I’m a weird artist who doesn’t listen to anyone else when I’m writing!

“I walk down the street moving to the rhythm of my feet. If I haven’t written a song in a while I feel quite stressed – writing is a great way to ease that. I always think maybe I’ve had enough once the album is out but I never have.

I love tribal rhythmic drums so that’s why my sound is very much like that.”

The former frontwoman of alt-folk collective 6 Day Riot, Tamara’s musical past screams teen drama soundtrack amongst other TV series, Hollywood blockbuster hits and online campaigns.

The songwriter’s music has appeared on Skins, Degrassi Next Class, Topshop and Central St Martin’s online campaign, adverts such as Andrex, MTV’s Catfish, Scream 4 and the mesmerising thriller 127 Hours (she cowrote the trailer with composer Deadly Avenger) starring James Franco.

She first made a name for herself as lead singer of band 6 Day Riot. Unlike their peers, 6 Day Riot didn’t want to blend in and be invisible in the folk scene so their look was perhaps more memorable than some of the other bands.

Tamara recalls: ”Back in the early days with 6 Day Riot we were in the folk scene and didn’t want to turn up in jeans and a folky look so we created a visual identity and I made my own headpiece.”

Though they gained notoriety when their song Run For Your Life was used in the Scream 4 soundtrack, their promised popularity in the wake of Mumford & Sons fizzled out. Yet the energy of their feline tour de force has reared her creative head.

It seems apt that Tamara has now changed her name to her arty alter ego

Malka – Hebrew for Queen. Like Lady Gaga, Tamara clearly needs a vessel to express her artistic creations so Malka has been born.

Of course, if the Central Saint Martin’s art graduate hadn’t prematurely ended an amazing Scottish gymnast career then we may have seen Tamara in another form. aving trained at a young age at an East Kilbride gymnastics club in South Lanarkshire, the talented gymnast looked like she was going the distance during her teenage years but sadly an injury determined her outcome in the gymnastics scene.

Thankfully her time as a gymnast had taught her a thing or two about dedication and deadlines.

Tamara recalls: “When I was five years old I competed for Scotland and the UK in gymnastics and was Scottish champion for the next four years.

“I’d probably say I’m ahead of all my deadlines so it’s (gymnastics) been really important to me and I guess training as a gymnast has given me confidence.

INTERVIEW

“You have to train hard hitting your targets. I still remember the feeling and have a four year-old daughter who’s already training.

“One thing about gymnastics, if you’re too intelligent you might not go for it because you don’t think about the injuries and how you might get hurt! I was kind of daft. All I ever thought I’d do is gymnastics.

“The only other thing I was good at was Art so I studied a foundation course at Cardonald College (now Glasgow Clyde College) and got into Central St Martin’s in London.

“I finished my degree because I thought it was important to finish it but I realised it was music I was more interested in. All the Arts are connected anyway.”

Considering the multi-talented Glaswegian is a cultural powerhouse with enough drive and energy that she could easily single-handedly run her own record company it comes as no surprise that that’s exactly what she did!

Tamara reveals why: “Back in the day Universal and all the majors

(labels) were interested in signing our band 6 Day Riot but there were so many restrictions and we wanted to be who we wanted to be.

“We got an indie deal but the record company who signed us went bust.

Respected music industry lawyer Anne Harrison said, “Do it yourself” and that’s what I did! started Tantrum Records. I’m not a control freak – I’ve been let down by different managers and different people. My team at Tantrum does it all for me now.

“Sometimes it’s too much and it’s awful. Everything’s crashing around and I’m thinking ‘I need to do artwork for the vinyl release and get deadlines’ and I don’t know what’s wrong with me that I do this but I kind of love it!”

Though she may have her own team, Tamara’s not too big to do what most artists like Paloma Faith do when they start out - last year at an award ceremony Paloma recalled pasting posters in the underground to promote herself.

“I still go around putting posters up when I get a gig. I’m constantly

organising booking our gigs. When we started off gigging we would be busking in that city and we’d set up in the street.”

The Glasgow singer and co-producer’s debut album in 2015, Marching To Another Beat, felt like the start of something that was going to grow as big as Florence and the Machine.

And if single Falling is anything to go by then her new album Ratatatat released on October 20 is sure to impress her followers and more besides Tamara reveals: “Ratatatat is about disillusionment of what’s going on in the world and hoping that something will change.

“It’s expressing the stuff with the NHS and everything else but it’s a pop record.

“A lot of the songs mean something to me but lyrically they could mean something else.”

It strikes me that sometimes our staff don’t realise how important their input can be; that one act of kindness or those few encouraging words that can have a lasting positive impact on someone who may well be going through the worst time of their life.

10 #1 You should get a job

GET a job you bum. There are several good reasons for this.

One: This will give you a different scene from uni/college.

Two: It will bulk up your CV for when you leave education.

Three: it will alleviate debt from student loans.

So when annoying old people tut at you for being a student and talk about you getting a job in the “real world” you can let Morpheus over there know that you’re already through the looking glass.

And when others are crawling – starving and sober – towards their next SAAS payment you can lord it over them with your extravagant minimum wage pay package.

Venting is healthy!

AS much as student life looks ideal from the outside – lots of lie-ins, lots of discounts etc, it can get pretty stressful juggling so many different aspect of your life all at once. That’s especially true when so much money is going towards what you hope will be a valuable qualification.

With that in mind, vent all you want.

Blow up. Just make sure you’re venting TO people and not AT people.

Let people know you’re stressed and quite often they’ll do something to help out – cover a shift, give you a bit of tutoring, allow you to have time to yourself.

It’s also worth mentioning that even though the nature of venting is that you’ll be rambling and not making much sense for most of it – make sure you don’t say or do anything permanent.

The stress will pass. I promise you.

LAZY, drunk, broke, naïve, overgrown school kids. That’s how the general public sees us.

This tells us one thing about the general public – they know what they’re talking about.

AS soon as the ever-changing timetables come barrelling into your life your usual eating/sleeping/working/socialising routine will be obliterated.

If, however, you get your geek on and start making lists, setting reminders and filling out calendars then you can keep yourself on track.

I’m LUKE HAWKINS and this is my list of tips on how to avoid the pitfalls of a clichéd student lifestyle – AKA 10 Things I Wish I’d Known Before Becoming a Student!

I SUCK at reading timetables and unofrtunately for me, my college sucks at updating timetables.

That means I spend a lot of time walking round in circles and up and down stairs in buildings that have apparently been designed by Mc Escher.

Your best tools for this situation are a helpful classmate in the class groupchat and good cardio.

list.There is nothing more satisfying than being able to score out or tick of items on a list as you work your way towards a work free weekend.

Keeping on top of everything, or at least knowing what there is you need to keep on top of, will leave you with enough time to do whatever else you need to do – including procrastinate.

Believe me, I know.

You’ll be on an independent learning curve

NO lecturer will be holding your hand throughout the duration of your time at uni/college and to be fair I doubt any of you would want that to be the case.

What that does mean, though, is that you will be responsible for the amount of work you put in, the amount of classes you attend and the amount of research you conduct.

If self-motivation and self-restraint aren’t your strong points then this will be your learning curve – your opportunity to show you can listen to the angel on one shoulder while ignoring the devil on the other.

Having said that, if your lecturer utters the phrase, “I’m encouraging you to conduct some independent learning,” then that can sometimes be lecturer speak for, “I can’t be bothered teaching right now,” or “I do not know the answer to your question.”

Only you can decide.

WITH classes as sporadic as they are, you’ll spend a lot of time going back and forth.

Or in some students’ cases, they won’t. In terms of pass marks it is worth it – some classes even awarding marks just for showing up.

In terms of money and convenience however, it’s difficult to say that it’s worth it.

Your buses will be late or break down or just decide not to exist and your train fares will be extortionate. thirty-seven

Everything is on your doorstep... make the most of it

WITHIN your campus you will find industry standard hardware and software.

This is stuff that can cost hundreds or even thousands of pounds.

You get to use it for free and without registering or signing any contracts.

If you make the most of these tools for your coursework you will be able to produce work that is at a much higher level (read: professional level) than what you would be able to create sat at home.

You could also luck out and have a lecturer that will be able to teach you how to utilise these tools.

Outside of the educational walls you will likely find a large town or city.

This will be home to the busiest and best bars and restaurants – give them a try. It is also where you will be able to find parks, pubs, clubs, fairs, exhibitions, musicians, artists, hideaways, hangouts and hidden gems. Go explore!

Networking doesn’t have to be official and awkward NO matter what course you’re on, you’ll be encouraged to discover and improve your communication skills and to work on “networking”.

To me “networking,” as a phrase was always down there with, “blue HAVING talked about networking and the downside of commuting, this is an important one.

If you want to look forward to going into study then make sure there’s a short-term reward in it for you.

I’m not saying get yourself into debt via retail therapy or drinking yourself stupid; but why not arrange to go for drinks with classmates after

class or meet your friends in town?

It will mean it won’t be such a trudge to those less-fancied lectures.

There is a reason campuses have cafes in them and unions have bars in them – have fun, chill out, talk, socialise, make the most of free time and space and you could end up meeting some interesting folks.

YOU’LL likely see plenty of graduates take to social media to breakdown about how they’ve gone through further education, built up debt and how, now that they have graduated, no one is willing to give them a job.

There’s no sure-fire

way to avoid being in this position but some extra curricular work can make all the difference.

What your further education gives you is a certificate that lets people know you can work and study to a certain level and that you have a good knowledge of the

industry. What the extra curricular stuff (work experience, relevant part time job, volunteering, short-term courses) does is it gives you experience and shows initiative and willingness to work and all those other catchphrases you hear people say in interviews.

It is right in the centre of town, and has very helpful and caring staff.

GO THE plane tickets will be the most expensive part of the trip, starting at around £50 from Glasgow or Edinburgh. However, booking in advance, at off-peak times, or booking a package deal will help bring that cost down.

Choose from snorkelling, kayaking, or interact with the wildlife (including dolphins!)

as much of the scenery as possible.If you are a Game of Thrones fan, then you will want to visit Dubrovnik. You can take a boat/walking tour around areas in the city where many iconic scenes where filmed.

Sarah’s Travel Tale I HAD always been interested in teaching but wasn’t willing to pay to study for a PGCE/PGDE qualification in teaching before I had tried it, so decided to try my hand at teaching abroad.

I also have a keen interest in travelling so decided teaching abroad was a no-brainer!

I didn’t want to continue working two jobs back to back, paying crazy rent and always wishing for the next holiday to come around.

To teach English, I completed a course with TEFL.org.uk (TEFL means teaching Teaching English as a Foreign Language), and I completed the 140-hour teaching programme.

I had to complete the course online, which meant watching videos and reading articles and providing written work. I also completed the classroom component which required a weekend of classes.

I am currently working at Beijing Foreign Studies University teaching the K-12 programme.

This is a branch of the university, forty-four

but I teach children, I have been here for two years. I teach many kinds of classes, mainly reading, but I also teach singing and dancing classes, arts and crafts and drama.

The course I studied really helped me to understand and appreciate how difficult it is for the students to learn another language, and gave me the tools to teach them best.

The course introduced me to the importance of building up students’ confidence, and how best to do that.

It also helped me understand my own native language better, and understand how language works.

I love my job, and everything about it. The best part is actually watching the students grow and investing all your time and energy in them.

The feeling you get when you see them blossom and grow is the greatest thing. I try to travel as much as I can when living in China. I have managed

to visit some Chinese cities such as Chingdao, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Suzhou, and I’ve also managed to get across to South Korea twice and also visited home three times! This year, I hope to travel to Japan, the Philippines and Hong Kong.

My plans are to continue teaching as a career. In a few years, I would like to return to the UK to complete my postgrad and become a teacher in a British school, but first I want to travel all around the world and teach more and more.

I am hoping to volunteer in a few schools around the world as a teacher as I would really like to spend some time teaching children who do not have access to a good education, particularly young girls in poorer countries. I hope to do this in a few years’ time.

I would absolutely recommend doing a TEFL qualification – it has opened so many doors for me and has actually changed the whole path of my life.

Without my TEFL qualification I would not have realised my ambition to become a teacher as a career.

IN June 2017 Ayrshire College student Holly-mae Fox completed her HNC in Technical Theatre.

She joined the Scottish Drama Training Network’s new Ensemble, The Network, as Deputy Stage Manager for the production Snowflake at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Snowflake was written and directed by leading Scottish theatre director Mark Thomson, and performed by an ensemble of acting and performance graduates from across Scotland.

Holly-mae will continue to study at Ayrshire College and complete her HND in Technical Theatre.

Following her training in Technical Theatre she hopes to become a touring Stage Manager, with a career in theatre and music industries.

Hollymae said: “I’d love to work for a high profile act like Muse or Ariana Grande, their shows are always amazing productions.”

Hurts THE electronic duo started off with a sound that unabashedly displayed all their influences – from Depeche Mode to Human League.

No one else on the scene was making those sounds so the lack of originality was forgivable.

Their new offering, Desire, certainly comes down the pop side more than anything else and has a production that wouldn’t sound out of place behind any current pop starlet.

This isn’t necessarily a careerist shift towards a mainstream sound; it’s that, as usual, inhouse producers at major labels spotted the trend of 80s and 90s electronica becoming more popular and shifted themselves towards a sound somewhere close to that of Hurts. l

Bugzy Malone BUGZY has proved so popular that the gig was upgraded to the Academy. With grime well in the flow of the mainstream, Bugzy Malone has become the north of England’s ambassador for the genre and has a trajectory that could take him to the top. Kele Okereke FORMER Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke is impossible to pin down.

Having come from the hugely talented, somewhat frustrating, highly influential four-piece, he went on to feature on a Chemical Brothers track, some less ambitious EDM music and even dabbled in rap while distancing himself from his indie roots.

He then returned to Bloc Party and is now releasing another solo album.

This one seems to have swerved in the opposite direction of his previous solo work as Streets Been Talkin’ shows with its acoustic plucking and soft, swelling strings.

The rest of the album will be as difficult to label as the rest of Okereke’s career. l FATHERLAND will be released on October 6.

T’S A NO-BRAINER. When you’re the wife of a comedian whose legendary acting role is that of a prankster always up for some excruciatingly embarrassing fun and you’re hubby’s just turned the big 3-0 there’s only one way to celebrate the momentous day.

You surprise him by sending him and his mates to a city renowned as party central.

The obvious choice is not Amsterdam, Magaluf or Ibiza. The Inbetweeners, White Gold and Zapped star James Buckley was treated to a surprise birthday in the best city with the biggest comedy festival in the world – Edinburgh!

James enthused: “It was my birthday mid-August so my wife surprised me and planned a trip.

“She woke me up at 6.30 in the morning and she had organised a trip for me and my friends to Edinburgh.

“We did a bit of target practice.

“We spent some time at the Fringe and some white-water rafting. It was amazing!”

Cycle training in Edinburgh THERE are special courses designed by the wonderful people at Cycling Scotland which offer all of the bikeability training wrapped up in a nice three-hour package called the Essential Cycling Skills course.

The course covers basic bike maintenance and safety checks for you as a cyclist and for your bike.

After this comes basic skills training in an area free of traffic to build confidence then an hour or so on road training to teach the basics of how and where to cycle on roads to keep yourself safe.

Once you feel more confident as a cyclist you could potentially embark on the next level – the Cycle Commuter course – which ups the ante to tackle busier junctions, larger volumes of traffic and multilane roads and roundabouts.

All it takes is a few hours of your time to make yourself a more confident and better cyclist.

For those of you who drive, it will open your eyes from

a driver’s point of view. Passing cyclists with greater care, paying attention to blind spots more and just slowing things down a bit so as not to intimidate cyclists and simple things like just hanging back a few more yards from a cyclist can make a massive difference to the pressure felt by a cyclist.

Buckley’s a Fringe binge birthday boy Castle near Edinburgh in 2012.

Their sons Harrison and Jude were born in Ayrshire and now that they are primary and nursery school age James wears his sensible dad hat while thinking of his days as a bit of a joker in school.

James recalls: “In school I treated myself as a comedy character. All I was interested in was trying to make people laugh.

“I was lucky that I’ve made a career of it but I wouldn’t give that advice (to muck around) to young people.

“The message I’d always give is to do stuff you enjoy and find fun in it.

Be clever and smart.

“Unfortunately at that time in my life when I was a teenager I wasn’t interested in learning.”

Thankfully for the comedy actor a

pursuit in that field did pay off and amongst other roles he starred in Hollywood mockumentary blockbuster Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping last year where he appeared alongside Arcade Fire, Pharrell Williams, Justin Timberlake, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg and Simon Cowell (as himself, of course). hough James’s big break was in Bafta Award-winning The Inbetweeners, created by Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, as a young teenager he was already beginning to carve an acting career.

James made a name for himself at the age of fourteen when he starred in BBC sitcom ‘Orrible’ as well as West End theatre productions Les Miserables and Whistle Down The Wind.

actress Sharon Rooney. Starring in the second series of Zapped, James explains why the comedy has the potential to run and run: “Zapped is really good and unusual. It’s comedy and you’re sort of in a situation that’s a bit more different.

“The trend since The Office has been work-based sitcoms so it’s nice to break away from that.

“It’s always best for me doing comedy. You’re usually surrounded by funny people and it makes the job fun!

“I always think that you can feel when something is going to do well and you’ve got everything out of the character. I feel there’s a lot more left in Brian.

“It would be nice to do some more. I don’t like what’s popular in comedy. It’s always the good stuff that doesn’t last

long. The annoying stuff runs and runs. What’s great about a sitcom like this is it was inevitable with The Inbetweeners that the schoolboys grow up and we’re never going to be able to play schoolchildren forever but the story in Zapped can go on and on.

“It’s certainly the family-friendlier of the shows I’ve done compared to The Inbetweeners and White Gold.

“It appeals to a wider-aged audience.

The show reminds me of Black Adder and Red Dwarf – a guy stuck in a situation surrounded by idiots!”

The new series will have fantastical creatures to rival Harry Potter (wash my mouth out) ranging from orcs, lizards, psychopathic fairies and stingbugs to blood suckers.

James recalls when he was growing up

there was a particular fairytale character that left him with some awful nightmares.

He reveals: “I’ve never, ever told anyone this but oddly enough I did have a recurring nightmare.

“When I was a little kid I had a book of fairytales and the story with the big bad wolf was always depicted as a really evil, scary-looking wolf.

“I found him terrifying and I used to have recurring dreams of the wolf on his hind legs. I think I had too much of an imagination.”

The star had to stretch his imagination even further when he starred in his second cameo role in Space comedy Red Dwarf.

For James it was a dream come true to star in Red Dwarf. He eagerly states: “I love Red Dwarf! I’m in the next series of it and have a little cameo role again.

“You might not recognise me but you’ll recognise my voice.”

And that’s not all in the pipeline. The comedy actor has begun writing so will wait to see the outcome of his new projects.

“I’ve got a few projects at the moment that I’m looking into,” James says.

“I can’t reveal what they are but I’ve had various feedback from people which is nice. My mentality is I don’t know how you tell if it’s very good or what other people want.”

INTERVIEW LAURA HAYDEN, lead singer of electro synth pop band Anteros, is used to a hustling bustling life spending most of her holidays and time home in Barcelona where she worked as an MTV presenter and DJ. Since she has made the transition to pop artist it’s still been a life full of fun (and the occasional hard work) reflected in her music videos.

One of the first dilemmas when the band got together was choosing a name.

Thankfully Laura’s suggestion and ‘fiery’ nature didn’t win over the rest of the band otherwise toilet connotations may have made it difficult for them to ever be taken seriously.

SUSIE DANIELS chats to Laura to find out why…

HOW did the band form?

Josh and I started the band. We wrote the song Anteros before we named the band and the name defined where we were.

It’s so weird picking a name because you’re stuck with it. I wanted ‘Find A Penny’ but we didn’t go with it because it sounds like ‘spend a penny’ when you’re going to the toilet! (laughs) YOUR mum’s from England and your dad’s from Barcelona.

Where’s home?

My family’s all in Barcelona and though I’m very comfortable in London, Barcelona is my holiday place and my home.

WHY are so many people comparing you to Blondie and who are your influences?

We never set out to be Blondie or anything else. It’s funny how in the end people make comparisons.

I’ve got so many bands I love; Blur, Blondie, Arcade Fire, Florence and the Machine – and Lana del Rey – she’s like [watching] a film on stage.

When I was, around 13, I went to see The Rolling Stones and Chrissie Hynde singing in The Pretenders.

Her energy on stage is incredible.

HOW did your band get together?

It seems like such a whirlwind since you played your first gig in 2015.

It always feels so much slower when you’re inside of it. Josh and I have been writing for four years together. It feels when you’re in the thick of it, we know what music we want to be making.

We hax some new songs released this year so it’s been a very busy Summer and I miss touring.

IF a singer 40 years from now was talking about ‘Laura Hayden the singer’ as an influence, what would you want them to say about you?

I’d like it to be empowering whatever it was. The lyrics connect strongly with women. You want people to unite to your music.

YOU filmed the video for Cherry Drop in Camera Obscura, Edinburgh. What was your favourite optical illusion?

I really liked the illusion where your face changes into someone else. We toured with White Light and we stayed in a B&B in Edinburgh.

I also got married in a chapel for fun!

We paid £1. I married Phoebe – the girl who shot the video – for a laugh. I’m not sure how she feels about it, having a boyfriend.

HOW is it being the only female in the band while touring and have you ever crossed the professional band/ boyfriend line?

Every band has their dramas. I do feel women bring things up a lot more and I’m very fiery Spanish though my band are like my brothers.

I only have sisters so I never let things fester. I don’t see any of the guys in the band as boyfriend material. We share

stinky rooms, farting and when I’m very drunk they’ll say, ‘Laura’s drunk again’ and hug me.

YOU have quite an input in your music video and they’re always full of fun. What’s your design process?

Josh and I, when we work together, I know what vision I have so I’ll start drawing and he’ll use whatever is necessary to make it happen.

We’re like an old married couple. The budgets are so small and there’s always so much to be done.

YOU rock a lot of fashion looks – how would describe your look?

It’s a bit of mix and match. The music inspires different outfits. The Breakfast EP is all very blue. It doesn’t matter what’s worn because there’s a bit of every sound in it.

People want to know what you’re about so they can compare you but I don’t really want that.

The ratio of women to men doing this is so crazy different and sometimes I’m the only girl on tour so I like to be colourful. The world would be a boring place if everyone wore black.

Get involved in MAS fundraising MENINGITIS Association Scotland encourages all teenagers who congregate in a common room or Halls to be aware that some bacteria can spread by exchanging saliva or spit through coughing or kissing or lengthy contact in close proximity.

MENINGITIS Association Scotland (MAS) was established in 1991 following a tragic event in Eileen McKiernan’s life when her 18-yearold son Lee was fatally struck down by the condition.

Eileen has dedicated her life to raising awareness and charity and started the first Glasgow meningitis support group which has raised over £1million for the development of a vaccine for one strain of the illness.

MAS has also raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for the charity, other charities and has supported so many worthwhile causes through fundraising events.

Eileen was awarded an MBE in 2009 for her dedication to MAS. At the end of last year, £4,000 was raised in support of the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity (CHAS).

The generous gift helped CHAS fund a neurosurgical endoscope; the first of its kind in a children’s hospital in Scotland.

The endoscope will be used to help children who require surgery to their brain or spine, including children with

brain tumours, cysts and hydrocephalus.Consultant Neurosurgeon at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, Dr Roddy O’Kane said: “Thank you for your donation, which will make a significant difference to the children that we treat.

“The equipment will allow me and my team to perform minimally invasive, more effective and safer surgery which will ultimately lead to a better outcome for all of the children that we treat here.”

15-year-old Ciara Allan from

Islay has been treated at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow since the age of three and is currently receiving treatment for a brain tumour.

Ciara said: “The care I get at the hospital is really special to me. I never give up in my fight against my condition but I can’t do it by myself.

“Thank you for helping my neurosurgeon and everyone in the team get this equipment, which will help lots of children and young people like me who have tumours.”

THERE are many friends and social groups who can get together and get involved – the St Leo’s Walkers group are organising a sponsored trip by ‘a few hardy spirits’ to Mount Olympus in Greece to raise money in aid of Meningitis Association Scotland.

No two classes are ever the same! Class can be difficult but easier options available.

The only real breaks you will get, if you are lucky, are the short walks between your exercises.

Work every muscle in your body, so if you’re new to the gym and want to jump head first into serious aches and pains the next morning, look no further…you have been warned!

Below is a non-exhaustive list of the go to classes if you want to improve muscle tone and fitness and leave you in an addictively euphoric state (it’s a fact).

CLASS: Kettle Bells DIFFICULTY: KETTLEBELLS are funny looking metal balls with metal handles which started out as a unit of weight in 18th century Russia.

Somewhere along the line someone decided that these weights could be swung, pressed and chucked about for a good workout!

You will work every muscle in your body, with a particular emphasis on legs, core and shoulders.

With a range of different weights you choose your own kettlebell. If exercises such as the Windmill, Pistol Squats or a Turkish Get Up intrigue you then get in here and the instructors will put you through your paces.

CLASS: Core Conditioning DIFFICULTY: A HIGH intensity workout lasting 30 minutes. A combination of kettlebells, dumbbells and bodyweight exercises.

We use these in unconventional ways to ensure a total body workout and keep you burning calories hours after you are finished.

The class will combine a variety of exercises with weighted carries to give your core a workout like no other!

It’s all combined into a series of challenges and races, the quicker you complete each part the more rest you earn. In this class it really pays to be a winner!!!

THE class that has everyone imagining they are Victoria Pendleton for about an hour.

Classes range from 30 to 60 minutes always including a series of challenging sprints and hill climbs. Not to mention whatever other challenges the instructor can come up with!

Instructor calls out the instructions so you never get lost. A great cardio workout that keeps you coming back for more. Spin is accessible for anyone from beginners to seasoned cyclists. sixty-eight

CLASS: Insanity / Tabata DIFFICULTY:

WANT to firm up? Get in here! These interval-based classes combine body weight strength training with high intensity cardio bursts designed to blast fat, improve your endurance and get you in ultimate shape.

Send your metabolism into overdrive to burn fat for hours after. Either 40 or 30 minute sessions and modification available for all fitness levels.

CLASS: Core de Force DIFFICULTY: AN explosive mixed martial art style class where you kick and punch your way into dropping inches off your waistline, building a stronger core and strengthening your whole body.

The workout is split into 3 rounds where you’ll experience bodyweight combinations in Boxing, Kickboxing and Muay Thai.

DIFFICULTY:

ONE of the world’s fastest ways to get in shape.

Body Pump will give you a total-body muscular endurance workout, using adjustable weighted barbells.

Come along if you want to get lean, toned and fit.

Great music, awesome instructors and your choice of weight inspire you to get the results you came for – to make up for over-indulging and fast!

This class pushes you to last night? Calories burned your limit every time. Want per class around 550.

CLASS: Grind

DIFFICULTY:

THIS 30 minute high intensity interval training workout involves using lower and upper exercise combinations allowing the body to move in different planes of motion.

Class is split into 3 rounds of 8 exercises followed by the GRINDATOR (Finisher). You’ll work through different exercises each month to help, revive and reset your metabolism, leading to shaping, toning and conditioning your body. It’s suitable for all fitness levels.
