here is ample reason to love every edition of Close Up Magazine but this one, is one of my favourites as it celebrates the start of Spring at every level. With longer and warmer days just around the corner and with Mother’s Day and Weddings making an appearance this issue is truly “blooming’ with advice and inspiration and getting you ready for the new season. This edition is all about transition from current fashion and beauty to fresh ideas to inspire your home. I am eager to fill you in on all the exciting features we have this month (look out for all our competitions that you can win right off our pages) and I can honestly say that this edition has been a true delight to bring together and lots of fun. I mentioned that it was an edition focused on transition and when we take a closer look at this month’s cover star – the incredibly talented Laura Whitmore – we are inspired. This is late even by my standards and my wonderful team who ensure the magazine meets its print deadlines on time have been keeping me on my toes. What would I do without them? The editor’s letter is almost the last thing to be written for an issue and I am not quite the deadline queen I claim to be when it comes to my own words. orn in County Wicklow in 1985, Laura went on to study journalism at Dublin City University and Boston University. Her big break came after winning the Pick Me MTV competition in 2008, resulting in huge presenting jobs across Europe. For the past five years, Laura’s braved the snakes, the spiders, the unforgiving time difference and Joe Swash as a co-host to bring us all the jungle gossip on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here Now. Laura’s hosted live from the BRITs, the BAFTAs, the MTV Movie Awards and the London 2012 Olympics. With huge live events all over her CV, she was also well-equipped for the grand-scale glamour of Strictly. Talking to BBC before her appearance on Strictly she said “I’ve embarrassed myself so much over the years I’m not sure there is anything left I can do. I fell off my chair on I’m a Celeb on live TV.” She also recently co-hosted the 2017 MTV EMAs at Wembley, returning to her former MTV roots.
While in Africa fulfilling a new hosting role on reality show Survival of the Fittest, Laura Whitmore admitted her three week stay on the sweltering savannah, where 12 contestants face off in a fiercely competitive battle of the sexes, meant she sadly missed her first Valentine’s Day with boyfriend Iain Stirling, voice of ITV favourite reality show, Love Island. ‘I think he wanted to come out because he had four days off – he’s on a stand-up comedy tour – and now it looks like he’s only got two days,’ the Irish presenter, 32, said. ‘But you know I actually talk to him more when I’m away, because you end up on the phone. If you’re in the house with someone and you’re watching television and you’re not concentrating… I think we’re very lucky with FaceTime now and stuff like that.’ Whitmore says she and her ‘Love Island’ boyfriend Iain Stirling are not ready for marriage and kids - but admits she feels pressure about starting a family now she is in her thirties. Speaking in-depth about becoming a TV
couple for the first time, Laura said: “I haven’t had a lot of relationships, people have said I have relationships, but not actual boyfriends. “At the moment I feel very lucky to have someone who gets me because it is hard, there is pressure in this industry. “I have known Iain for a while and it was a friendship thing that led to something else which is great. “We haven’t discussed marriage or children. At this stage we are still early in our relationship like six months or so. But I am at that stage where some of my friends have got married and then they are like ‘are you having a baby?’ and then I have some friends who can’t have children. “As a woman that is another pressure. I have friends who have been trying to have children for two years, you don’t know what anyone’s situation is. “I am in a situation where I am seeing someone who is my friend and I have a great time with them and I am enjoying it. We both have busy careers and we both get each other, that is what it is at the moment. “That is all I am thinking of because I don’t know what I am doing next month sometimes.” Laura, who fronted new Love Island style ITV2 show Survival of the Fittest, also said it was a positive time to be a female on TV following action at the BBC over gender pay. She added: “Do you know what is great? We are talking about it [gender pay]. Ten years ago, we wouldn’t be talking about it. “I think there are some really strong female role models out there, Emma on The Voice, Caroline on Love Island. You as a person have a responsibility to yourself to fight for what you are worth. We are all entitled to fight and if we aren’t getting what we think we should, you shouldn’t do the job. As hard as that is when you are looking for a job. “I do think these big organisations are under pressure because the public and the media are shining a light on it. Even if it is out of embarrassment or afraid of being shamed. That is not the way it should work, but if good comes from that then bloody hell that is amazing.”

The girl group meet to discuss ‘pop reunion no one thought would ever happen’

t’s time to hop on the Spice Bus again as the Spice Girls have reunited for the first time in six years. Victoria Beckham shared a picture of the moment on Instagram writing: ‘Love my girls!!! So many kisses!!! X Exciting x.’ Emma Bunton also posted the snap, writing: ‘Great catch up with my girls! #bffs always the future is looking spicy!’
It was the first time all five women had been in the same room together since 2012, and they were all smiles as they cosied up together and appeared to confirm rumours that a reunion is on the cards. The former girl band reportedly got together to discuss reforming the group, with potential projects including a greatest hits album, endorsing products, hosting a TV talent show and working on TV shows in China. And, if the reunion does go ahead, it’s reported that the fivesome will each pocket £10 million! Geri Horner, 45, and Mel C, 44, were the first to arrive at the meeting, which is thought to have taken place at Geri’s Hertfordshire home. Next to arrive was Mel B, 42, who had jetted in from Los Angeles the day before. Paying tribute to her Scary Spice days, she carried a leopard print bag as she headed inside. Further fuel was added to the fire about the band’s plans to when their original manager Simon Fuller was also pictured arriving, while Emma, 42, was later seen leaving the house wearing a blue coat and carrying a Celine handbag.

Victoria, who was not pictured arriving, has reportedly always been adamant that the group would never get back together, but it seems she may have changed her tune after years of reunion rumours. The designer, whose fashion firm lost £8.4m last year, is believed to have agreed to a reunion on the condition that she won’t have to sing and, according to insiders, the 43 year old and Geri are also said to be refusing to commit to a ‘fully-fledged tour’ due to family commitments. A source revealed: ‘This is the pop reunion no one thought would ever happen again. But after a long period of negotiation, Victoria agreed the time is right to work on new projects this year. It’s very exciting because she has always been adamant she wouldn’t go back.’ The group, who formed in 1994, last performed together at the London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony, while in 2016 it was announced that Mel B, Geri and Emma would be reuniting as GEM. However, little materialised after some of their rumoured singles were leaked. Talking about trying to reunite the band, Geri said in October 2017: ‘I really pushed to get everyone back together. It got to the point where I had to let it go. I still love the girls and there are other bits and bobs in the pipeline.’

In amongst the fashionable array of stylish shops, restaurants and cafés on The Green in Winchmore Hill, is a great example of a modern business with (excuse the pun) its house well and truly in order. As I walk into this independent boutique-style property company I am welcomed into a warm, bright, modern space with a classic but contemporary feel - not fussy, not flashy and not a wall of mineral water or coffee bar in sight (call me old fashioned but I favour getting my espresso from a café and my home from an estate agent!). This welcoming and stylish space is furnished with desks manned by an extremely friendly, approachable and experienced team, all guided by the company’s leading lady, founder and dynamic figurehead, André Chris. What their newly refurbished interior doesn’t immediately hint at however, is the change and evolution that this company has witnessed (from the coalface) and kept apace with over the last 40 years… When they started in 1977 from a double fronted shop opposite the bus station in Wood Green they were all about lettings (mostly in the areas of Ladbroke Grove, Islington and Highgate).

This was a time when business was all done face to face, on paper and the most high-tech thing in the office was a fax machine! Since then the market has gone up, down and sideways and yet they have continued to flourish and grow where a huge number of others have failed. In 2001 they moved to N21 and since then have become established as the go-to specialists for Winchmore Hill and surrounding areas (Southgate, Oakwood and Cockfosters) and these days they have much more than a fax machine in their office! This is a business that understands the power of technology and presentation but not at the expense of working face to face. They only use professional photographers to capture and present your home at its best, again, call me a traditionalist but when I’m looking for results, I want salespeople to sell, chefs to cook and photographs to be taken by photographers! It is the inability to have regular bowel movements, with stools often being dry, hard, difficult to pass and varying in size. Understanding how painful and distressing this can be for a child is important in understanding the impact constipation can have on a family. The longer a child withholds from going to the toilet, the more uncomfortable he becomes with increased griping abdominal pain, making it difficult for a child to focus and concentrate, very often impacting on behaviour. Dr Cohn says, “constipation can start at any age. What happens is at some point going to the loo becomes painful, uncomfortable and scary for a child and in-order-to escape this experience they will start holding on. As they hold on, the bigger, harder and scarier the problem becomes. When they finally have a movement and it hurts, this makes them want to hold on even more, thus creating a vicious cycle.” “We see two effects in children who are constipated, the first is a conscious fear of going to the toilet, but beyond that there is a subconscious habit of ‘holding on’ even if the child doesn’t want to. What we are effectively describing is a battle between the bowel, bottom and brain. Parents who are concerned can feel at ease knowing that there is usually no long-term physical damage for children with this condition.” “Sometimes, as a parent you may not recognise the signs, particularly if your child has regular soiling, which can lead you to think the child is desperate for the toilet, rather than withholding. Since, withholding is often an ingrained habit that must be overcome, treatment needs to be tailored to meet the needs of the individual child. Therefore, parents with concerns should always consult their doctor for advice and a long-term treatment plan.” “The objective of any treatment plan is to make regular bowel movement as easy and comfortable as possible for your child.”

James Corden talks about starring in Peter Rabbit, and what his son thinks of his new film.
T
here are few British stars that have made as much of an impact on Hollywood as James Corden. The British comedy actor was a star over here thanks to Gavin and Stacey, The History Boys and The Wrong Mans. He also counted a number of stars as his friends, including David Beckham and the late George Michael, both starring in a sketch with him for Comic Relief. Despite his success, he was a relative unknown when he got the hosting job for US TV chat show The Late Late Show in 2014. Luckily, in a short time he became a household name thanks to his star interviews and the buzz surrounding the show’s Carpool Karaoke segment. Now, Hollywood has come calling with a very British role. He voices the title character in Peter Rabbit, a family film that uses a mix of animation and live action to bring Beatrix Potter’s classic character to life. Peter torments Mr McGregor (Domhnall Gleeson) along with a whole host of farmyard friends, voiced by the likes of Margot Robbie, Daisy Ridley and Sia. So, what was it like getting into the mindset of an animated rabbit? “I don’t know that I ever (did)!” he reveals at a press conference for the film. “In the conversations that I had with Will (Gluck, director), it was never about ‘channelling my inner rabbit’, it was about how do we find a way to honour this character that is so beloved by fans of Beatrix Potter? How do we unlock this lovable, mischievous character that has been created in these beautiful books, and honour it now in a film? I just feel very fortunate that I was able to work with a director and writer like Will who just understands the legacy of the character and the world that it lives in.” The biggest challenge for everyone, especially Corden, was to make an over 100 year old character relevant to the smart phone generation. “More than anything we just want to reintroduce this character to so many young people who will hopefully leave the movie theater and go and discover these incredible books” he explains. The process for making an animated voice over is always an odd one, and the 39-year-old admits to a little bit of ‘impostor syndrome’. “I feel like a bit of a fraud sitting next to Domhnall and Rose (Byrne) who were out there doing all
this proper acting” he chuckles, “whereas I was just able to turn up in my pyjamas and do this for a few hours at a time!” It’s much more than coming in and reading lines on a page, however. “I don’t know if you’d ever call it improvisation” he explains, “it was much more discussing if this line felt right or if that feels right, then going into the screening room and watching it as a whole, and going ‘no that bit doesn’t feel quite right we should take it out and change it’. It was a constantly evolving feast, really, which actually made the whole thing feel very organic.” Working in a film with animals can inspire many actors to become pet owners themselves, but the star of In A League of Their Own has some very individual ideas for names if he ever adopted a rabbit. “Today is a monumental day. Not because we’re all here. Because it was announced today that The Spice Girls are reforming. I swear on my life. All five” he jokes. “So I would not get one rabbit. I’d get five rabbits. I would name them Scary, Baby, Sporty, Posh and Ginger.” The film has been released in America and has enjoyed a strong opening weekend, confirming that James Corden’s transition from Brit favourite to bona fide movie star. However, there’s only one critic Corden himself is concerned with, his young son Max. “My Son is 6 and he’s seen the film” he reveals. “He said that the thing he loves about the film is that everybody makes mistakes and everyone is going to make mistakes. But what’s important is how you react to that mistake and the person you are after.” Finally, the questions had to return to wildlife at some point! Corden has chatted with the most famous people in the world with Carpool Karaoke, including One Direction, Elton John, Lady Gaga and the First lady Michelle Obama. However, which one of the animated friends from Peter Rabbit would make it on to the segment? “It would have to be all the animals” he says diplomatically. “They’d sing a whole collection of songs that have animals in it…’Who Let The Dogs Out’ and songs like that.”

From mindfulness to interesting TED talks, there’s a wealth of podcasts to try out When work deadlines start piling up and it feels like years since you’ve had a holiday, your mind can becoming increasingly frazzled. It’s important to slow down, take a deep breath and unplug from the demands of life. Instead, when you’re feeling increasingly stressed, why not plug into a podcast? From mindfulness to interesting TED talks, there’s a wealth of podcasts to try that will calm you down and help you feel inspired. The Mindful Podcast If you’ve never tried mindfulness, it’s a simple form of meditation. It helps you to become present in what is going on, so become aware of where you are and what’s going on without feeling overwhelmed. The Mindful Podcast helps you achieve this state of mindfulness. The episodes are fairly short, containing either 10 minute or five minute practices to try out from topics such as taming bad habits or feeling grateful. As well, there are some long episodes that usually take place live, from experts in the field. Listen to the Mindful Podcast on iTunes or Podbean
Currently, one in four people will experience a mental health problem in the UK each year, with anxiety specifically affecting one in twenty. Although it can affect anyone at any time, in a recent study, conducted by Office for National Statistics, it was found that it’s currently more common in women than men. In the year ending September 2017, women reported higher life satisfaction, worthwhile and happiness ratings compared with men but, despite this, reported higher levels of anxiety. Why? Well, scientists put it down to the difference in brain chemistry and hormones between genders. Start the conversation Anxiety can make people shrink into themselves and hide away from the world. Asking how they’re feeling today is an easy way to start a conversation and letting them know you’re there to listen. Finding trusted people who they can open up to is vital for an anxiety sufferer in order for them to manage their condition. Encourage them to seek help If your friend or family member feels that their anxiety is becoming worse over time, you could encourage them to seek help through a GP or one of the many mental health support groups available. You can ask if they would like you to make the call for them or go along to the appointment as support. Conversely, if they don’t feel that they’re ready to seek professional help – don’t pressure them to do so. Keep your invitations open There may be days where you extend an invitation to a coffee, to dinner or a night out and they say no. Don’t close the door on them or pressure them to come. Living with anxiety can be mentally draining and large numbers of people may trigger panic or make them feel trapped. Be patient and gentle. There will be a time when they do feel well enough to join you. Be forgiving Anxiety can change a person’s behaviour, so be forgiving when they’re irritable. It may not be in their control so try your best to be patient. Let them know you understand and that you won’t walk away from them. Learn about anxiety One of the best things you can do to help someone is to learn and understand about their illness; you might feel more able to help your friend or family member manage their anxiety if you learn more about the condition yourself.
TED Radio Hour Everyone loves a good TED Talk and the TED Radio Hour is a way of bringing some of the best talks together. Each episode focuses on one topic whether that’s space, money, beauty or medicine with interviews and talk snippets from the interesting TED conferences that happen around the world. For a good teaser of what to expect, try the Going Undercover episode. It explores stories focusing on when people have gone undercover, whether that’s as a journalist, an activist or in a terrorism operation. Listen to TED Radio Hour on NPR or iTunes Soul Music Soul Music is a lovely podcast from BBC Radio 4. Each episode explores one song and what it means to different people around the world. It looks at the powerful, emotional impact music can have on people. It comes out fairly sporadically but it is a very soothing listen when it does. Try out the Waterloo Sunset episode focusing on the Kinks’ hit number. Listen to Soul Music on the BBC Sleep Whispers Sleep Whispers is part of the Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) trend. ASMR focuses on ambient sounds, like whispering, and people find it relaxing and soothing. Sleep Whispers features whispering ramblings and readings to help you relax and fall asleep. The UK’s next big star on the ‘pure adventure’ of working with Steven Spielberg.
I
f you haven’t already heard of Oldham native Olivia Cooke from her numerous hit films and TV series, 2018 will no doubt be the year to change that. The British actress has been incredibly busy the last four years, making a name for herself in horror movies Ouija and The Quiet Ones, breaking everyone’s hearts in Me, Earl and The Dying Girl, and appearing on TV show Bates Motel. This month, however, she gets her dream role in Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One. “I read the script first, and it just felt like pure adventure” she says of the sci-fi fantasy, set within a virtual reality game where a young boy from a poor neighbourhood seeks to find the treasure left by the game’s creator. She plays Art3mis, a fellow gamer also out for the treasure. “It was Willy Wonka, it was Indiana Jones, and also this chance to work with Steven Spielberg, it feels very surreal. When you’re a kid you’re like ‘I want to be an actor, I want to be in a Steven Spielberg film’ and it seems so absurd!” Many characters in the film play two roles – that of their character and that of a virtual avatar that represents them in the game. For Cooke, it was a chance to experience acting from a different perspective as many scenes involved motion capture technology. “Yeah it was really fun” she beams at a press conference for the film. “These avatars are sometimes the idealised version of themselves or a completely different creation, So working with that kind of duality in mind, because some of us in motion capture had to adopt different characteristics and different physicalities so to work with that was really fun and interesting, unlike anything I’ve had to do before. It’s a challenge for us all I would say, speaking on behalf of everyone!” Finally, with the futuristic technology not a million miles away from the type of technology we have today, the young actor admits to feeling a sense of dread that the dystopian world of the movie made come to pass in the reality. “This feels scarily close to a world that we’re entering!” she says, warily. Although, with a new movie with Oscar Isaac and her own mini series also in the works, the immediate future looks very bright for her!

Marble mini loaf cakes with clementine & chocolate These sweet mini loaves get their pretty marble effect by swirling the clementine mixture and the cocoa-rich mixture together – a match made in heaven. Vegetarian Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 15-20 minutes + cooling Total time: 30-35 minutes + cooling Makes: 10 Ingredients 225g butter, softened 225g golden caster sugar, plus extra for sprinkling 225g self-raising flour 4 large Waitrose British Blacktail Free Range Eggs, beaten 3 tbsp milk 3 tbsp cocoa powder Grated zest and juice of 2 Waitrose Seedless Easy Peelers Clementines 50g dark chocolate, chopped Pack 10 Cooks’ Homebaking Mini Loaf Cases Method 1. Preheat the oven to 200ºC, gas mark 6. Whisk the butter, sugar, flour and eggs together in a bowl until smooth, then transfer half the mixture to a separate bowl. 2. Beat the milk and cocoa powder into one bowl of mixture. Beat the clementine zest and juice and the chopped chocolate into the second bowl of mixture. 3. Drop spoonful’s of the mixture alternately into the loaf cases then using a bamboo skewer, lightly ripple the mixtures together to create a marble effect. Sprinkle lightly with the extra sugar Cook’s tip and bake for 15-20 minutes until risen and For a full-sized loaf, firm to the touch. Egg-Citing OVERLOAD Impress your Easter dinner and brunch guests with these tasty and fun holiday-themed recipes.
British Berry Sherry Trifle A quick-to-make pudding with layers of flavour, this uses the best of fine British ingredients. It makes the perfect dessert to serve at a traditional British celebration. Vegetarian Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: No cooking required Serves: 8 Ingredients 300g pack Waitrose Frozen British Raspberries 300g pack Waitrose Frozen British Blackberries 2 tbsp icing sugar 100ml Waitrose Berry Red Smoothie 1 Waitrose Madeira Loaf Cake, cut into 16 pieces 100ml Waitrose Cream Sherry 250g tub essential Waitrose Creamy Soft Cheese ½ x 500g essential Waitrose Fresh Custard 300ml tub Waitrose Extra Thick Double Cream 2 tbsp toasted flaked almonds 2 tsp Cooks’ Homebaking Freeze Dried Strawberries
Cook’s tip For even more flavour, use fresh berries in summer when available.
Method 1. Place the berries in a bowl and gently stir in the icing sugar and berry smoothie. Set aside for 5-10 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, crumble half the Madeira cake into the base of a large glass serving bowl. Drizzle over half the sherry and set aside for 5 minutes, then spoon over half the berries and some of the liquid from the bowl. Crumble the remaining cake on top, sprinkle with the rest of the sherry, then spoon over the last of the berries and any juices. 3. In a separate bowl, whisk the soft cheese until smooth then add the custard, whisking until well blended. Pour over the fruit. Cover with clingfilm and chill.

To make individual servings, prepare the trifle mixture in 8 wine glasses, layering up the ingredients to get the same effect.

Swirled Easter Brownies Vegetarian Children’s Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 35-40 minutes + cooling Total time: 50-55 minutes Serves: 16 Ingredients 150g butter, plus extra for greasing 150g dark chocolate, roughly chopped 50g dark muscovado sugar ½ tsp vanilla extract 1 tsp cornflour 4 medium Waitrose British Blacktail Free Range Eggs 200g essential Waitrose Creamy Soft Cheese 225g light muscovado sugar 75g plain flour 90g bag Cadbury Mini Eggs
Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, gas mark 4. Grease and line a 20cm square tin with baking parchment. 2. Place the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl and set over a pan of gently simmering water, stirring occasionally, until melted. 3. Meanwhile, for the cheesecake mixture, beat together the dark muscovado sugar, vanilla extract, cornflour and 1 egg in a bowl. Gently stir in the soft cheese until mixed. Set aside. 4. In a bowl, beat the remaining 3 eggs. Stir in the chocolate mixture with the light muscovado sugar and flour. Spoon half of this into the tin, then drop in small spoonfuls of the cheesecake mixture. Spoon the remaining chocolate mixture over the top. Using a chopstick or skewer, lightly ripple the top, then bake for 15 minutes. Scatter over the Mini Eggs and return to the oven for a further 15-20 minutes until set. Set aside to cool in the tin before cutting into 16 squares to serve.

As a guilty pleasure, seeing Nicolas Cage do the kind of crazy freak outs that have made him an internet favourite is not a bad way to spend a couple of hours.

The annual Woody Allen film, starring Kate Winslet as a former actress dealing with middle age and her own part in a love triangle, as well as working as a waitress in 1950’s Colney Island. A disappointing effort from a director who had been on a bit of a winning streak, the story offers little that hasn’t already been explored over and over by the filmmaker, and doesn’t make the most of his talented cast that also includes Justin Timberlake and Juno Temple. Never mind, there’s always next year.

It also showcases the amount of range in its star, who might have an action career in his future based on this evidence!

James Corden voices the title character in this big screen adaptation of the Beatrix Potter books, where Peter and friends terrorise mean farmer Mr. McGregor (Domhnall Gleeson). Your enjoyment of this film depends almost entirely on how well you know the original books. Lovers of Beatrix Potter will be aghast at the wise-cracking, twerking update to one of children’s literature’s most famous heroes, although newcomers and small children will probably not be as bothered. It would have been nice to have seen Peter Rabbit be given the same kind of care as the Paddington films, but as it is it’s a forgettable romp.

After 2011’s incredible Tyrannosaur, Paddy Considine is back as a director, also starring as a boxer who has to come to terms with severe brain damage that affects his career and his life with his wife (new Doctor Who Jodie Whitakker). There are excellent performances from both stars, who both give it everything they’ve got. However, the plot can be a bit heavy handed in the more emotional moments, leaving subtlety back in the dressing room. While not a knockout, it’s a story worth getting in the ring with.

K
ate Winslet adds to a long and illustrious CV this month in the Woody Allen film Wonder Wheel. She plays a former film actress in the 1950’s struggling with life after fame, working as a waitress in Colney Island who has her sights set on a good looking young lifeguard (Justin Timberlake). For many, working with veteran film maker is a dream come true, and Winslet is no exception. “Working with Woody, I mean how long have you got?” she says at a Q&A for the film. “It’s both terrifying and completely exhilarating. From the moment I read the script I felt that way, terrified and exhilarated.” Of course, it wasn’t certain that the Titanic star would play the role, given that she herself didn’t think she could play it. “Actually when I did first read it, I remember feeling terribly disappointed, because I thought there’s just no way that I’m ever going to get to play this part, and someone else was going to have to do it because it was just too difficult” she says. “It was just a terrible shame that there was going to be this terrible moment where I was going to have to watch this other actress play Ginny.” Luckily, she got some tough love when approaching her family about the role. “I looked my husband in the eye and said ‘It’s absolutely brilliant, but I just can’t do it’” she recalls. “Then, my daughter walked past and said ‘for f***s sake, get over yourself!’” Many great actresses, from Diane Keaton to Cate Blanchett to Scarlett Johansson, have starred in lead roles for Allen, and Winslet certainly felt the weight of history. “I felt proud to join a long list of extraordinary actresses who have played leading roles for him, and that sense of responsibility was quite present in me too” she says. “I just had the feeling of ‘I just can’t F*** this up!’” While she enjoyed a good deal of respect from her director, the same can’t be said for her co-stars. As well as mistaking actor Jim Belushi for his dead brother John, the 82-year-old New Yorker didn’t seem to be familiar with global superstar cast member Justin Timberlake. “I actually don’t think he knew who he was at all!” she laughs.

INCREDIBLE HOUSE COVERED IN A MILLION MOSAIC PIECES HAS FINALLY BEEN REVEALED AFTER YEARS OF BEING OBSCURED BY SCAFFOLDING You know those houses you walk past and think ‘that’s my dream house’? Usually they’re painted in pastels or have a jazzy door. There’s not much you can really assess beyond the exterior. In the jazzy houses rankings, all those pastel-painted homes will have a tough job beating this place in Chiswick, though. Over in West London there’s a house covered in a million colourful mosaic pieces. The reason you haven’t noticed it before: It’s been covered up with scaffolding for the last few years while the owner and artist behind the home, Carrie Reichardt, added the finishing touches. Now, finally, it’s been revealed. And it’s pretty glorious. Carrie spent the last two decades decorating the house with an ‘uncensored’ art mural after becoming frustrated by galleries telling her what she could and couldn’t do with her art. ‘I just thought I wanted something that no-one could stop me from doing,’ says Carrie. ‘The house has been 20 years in the making but it’s still a working progress. ‘I finished the front last May. Now we’re working on the back. It’ll probably take another five years to complete because I want to finish my garden as well. ‘I suspect it’ll become an ongoing thing until I die or find another home to start to decorate. ‘Naturally it does take an awfully long time to do a piece like this in between working and having three children and everything else that needs doing – at times it was hard. ‘The kids don’t even like it that much. My oldest used to hate it. I think she didn’t like being in a house that stood out so much, rather than not liking the actual art, though she now appreciates it.’
If you’ve got a touch of claustrophobia, this probably isn’t the house for you. Same goes for anyone who, like me, has a wide bum that knocks over glasses and cutlery whenever they walk past a table. One of Britain’s narrowest homes, which measures just 9ft wide, is now on sale for £225,000. Known as the Doll’s House, the cottage in Cornwall has struggled to sell thanks to its tiny size, having functioned as a holiday cottage since last year. It’s now back on the market at a slightly lower price to entice any owners who dream of a teeny home. The cottage has just 339 square foot of floorspace, but managed to pack in one bedroom, two reception rooms, a kitchen, and a shower room. If you don’t have a spare £250,000 handy but are keen for a stay, just cross your fingers and hope the home doesn’t sell. At the moment it’s listed as a holiday let by Cornish Cottages, with a week’s stay priced between £245 and £515. Cornish Cottages describes the property as having a Mediterranean feel thanks to a stable door entrance and tiled floor, and notes the thick stone walls that add to the home’s cosiness.

Charges Must Be Reasonable to be Reasonably Incurred – Says legal disputes expert Gary Beecham The leases relating to tenancies in blocks of flats and similar buildings will normally require the tenants to make a reasonable contribution towards the ‘estate’ costs of the property. The estate costs are those which apply to the whole of the premises or are for the benefit of all the tenants. Typical estate costs will be those for the cleaning of common areas, lift maintenance, buildings insurance etc. In addition, the landlord will have the right to recover costs for repairs and so on. It is usual for such costs to fall on the tenants only when they have been ‘reasonably incurred’ by the landlord. A recent case dealt with the situation in which a landlord sought to charge tenants for expenses which, though they may have been reasonably incurred, were thought to be unreasonably high. The 16 tenants of a block of flats were faced with demands for payment of their relevant contributions towards a block insurance policy. It is reasonable for tenants to be required to make such payments but the premium payable was some four times that which could be obtained in the open market for similar cover. The tenants went to court to oppose their liabilities, and the Upper Tribunal (UT) agreed with them that the amount charged was not reasonable. The landlord advanced no reason why there should be such a large discrepancy between the premium it incurred and the market premium and as a result the UT took the view that the expense was not reasonably incurred and could not be passed on in full to the tenants.
