COVER INTERVIEW
CAROLINE FLACK Words by Andrea Georgiou
While the girls in the Love Island villa were dressing to impress with their swimwear, host Caroline Flack has been upping the ante with her wardrobe. The presenter has been sporting some of your favourite high street brands, with the odd designer piece thrown in for good measure. Caroline has also seen huge success with her very own fashion collaboration with River Island, featuring slogan tees, Hawaiian prints and must-have denim cut-offs.

COVER INTERVIEW
T
he Love Island host has worked alongside the brand’s in-house design team to create the 19-piece capsule collection. Caroline said: “With it being a summer collection it’s obviously inspired by the sunshine and Love Island. It’s bright, practical and perfect for the city or on holiday, any friends that I’d shown the collection to told me it’s totally me, it’s like I’m walking into my own wardrobe!” Teasing the news on Instagram, Caroline wrote in shouty capital letters: “I HAVE MEGA NEWS. SO EXCITING.” Fans commented in their hundreds, all thrilled about the news. Fans of Caroline’s style will know that she loves a shorter hemline, a irty dress, a playsuit and she isn t afraid of colour. She also LOVES the high-street, and can often be seen stepping out in bargain ensembles. Love Island wouldn’t be Love Island without a new cast full of singletons looking to crack on, those iconic water bottles and, well, Caroline Flack… What’s something that always surprises you about the show? They don’t swim as much as you think they would, I would be in the pool the whole time. I think they just want to get a tan.
Which contestant’s success story are you obsessed with? Camilla is the success story that I am most proud of and I would like to put this straight because there was a story saying I slammed the contestants for doing teeth whitening. I love all of the contestants. I just meant Camilla has come out and used her platform for doing something really brilliant and it’s really nice to see but that wasn’t putting anyone down. In terms of love, Alex and Olivia’s relationship has been tested and it’s lasted this long and there’s going to be a marriage. I don’t know if I’ve got an invite but she asked me to buy a dress! What does the show teach us about love in 2018? That it’s simple but complicated. This is such a modern dating show and it’s a phenomenon in its own right that’s it’s got bigger and bigger but actually with all the things that go on like Tinder, Love Island actually goes back to the traditional side of dating. They haven’t got phones, they can’t poke each other on Facebook, they have to sit down and have the art of conversation, which people don’t do now. It’s an old fashioned style of dating that we’re bringing back. How do we know people wouldn’t have had sex on TV in the past? We didn’t give them the chance! We’re not showing full-on sex, we are showing movement. Sex happens in relationships, everyone has sex. You don’t have to watch it but I do.
I DON’T THINK ANY SERIES HAS BEEN MORE SPECIAL THAN ANOTHER. I STILL HAVE A SPECIAL PLACE IN MY HEART FOR SERIES ONE.
Are you in touch with any of the ex-Islanders? I stay in touch with some of them, it’s always a social media DM like “How are you? Fine”. I speak to Camilla because she now weirdly works for my best friend doing charity work. That’s a really weird but good connection. There was lots of Camilla to talk about. She came in as someone who wasn’t your traditional reality TV star and then actually was more relatable than you thought she was going to be and ended going up on a real journey. You never thought she’d go in as a bomb disposal expert and come out with a Calvin Klein model.
Do you have a favourite series? For me, all three series have been special. The momentum has picked up as it’s gone along, which is always nice to see in a series. I don’t think any series has been more special than another. I still have a special place in my heart for series one. Last year, we reached a bigger audience across different ages. I think people started realising the show is a lot more than what it might seem on the surface. People have realised it’s so much more than just being another reality show. It’s about real relationships and how they develop and people always see a bit of themselves in everyone. What’s your best advice for anyone looking to land a spot on the show next year? First of all, know that you want to do it because it does change your life. You’re out there and people know who you are and you can t change that so, fi stly, kno that this is the ight thing you want to do. Don’t try and be like any of the other islanders, don’t think “I will try and be like Olivia”, they’re done, ell, not done, ob iously, e ha e finished ith the on this
12
show so it’s time to bring in new characters so there’s no point being like the others. If you’re coming in for fame, not love, that will be visible to the viewers and you’ll get voted out. If you’re not he e o lo e, they ll find out ut hen you do go into the show now, fame does come with it so there’s got to be at least 5 per cent of you that likes being famous or wants to be famous. You can’t go in saying you don’t want to be famous because you are going to be famous.
Is being on Love Island your career highlight? I’ve been in this show from the start, whereas all the other shows I did, I stepped into someone else’s shoes so it’s nice to have a tiny bit of ownership over this. How do you prepare for summer? I go to the gym three times a week and maybe do a bit of hot yoga, but not in the summer because it’s too hot! I love Pilates and then just get a good tan and exfoliate, that’s it! What’s your post-show ritual? It’s usually about 3am when I come out, we have to wait for certain times as we have to wait for the public votes to be counted. They’re really tired while I am doing my walk in. Myself and the producers just have a bottle of red wine in the dressing room after the show to wind down.

Marc Jacobs said it best, with his mad mash-up of swirly prints, rainbow colours and turbans. Imagine the splashy, sun-drenched style of a 1960s Palm Beach socialite – Lilly Pulitzer, say – and then take it up a notch or three. Gucci’s Hawaiian-tropic print two-piece teamed with glittery gloves and a pile of necklaces is a case in point.

BEAUTY NOTES
JASON COLLIER: Your Hair Hero
Stylist to the stars Jason Collier shares his expert advice with Close Up readers
PRODUCT OF THE MONTH Newly launched this month, I am loving Shea Moisture’s 100% Virgin Coconut Oil Daily Hydrating Shampoo, which is just perfect for summer. It’s all totally natural, packed with the goodness of coconut oil which hair just drinks up, and it smells beautifully tropical too. It’s a very gentle shampoo but also very effective, making it ideal for keeping hair clean and refreshed all summer long. It’s particularly good for breaking down product build-up, which is ideal during summer when we’re all relying on dry shampoo, hairspray and all manner of other products to keep things looking fresh and swishy. I always recommend sha ooing t ice, but definitely do this during the summer to keep hair super clean and smelling fabulous!
What a month t finally feels like summer has arrived and I’ve really en oyed ma ing the most of London’s heatwave this month – luckily the salon is always cool but to be out and about in my fa ourite spots in London, enjoying cocktails with friends and la y days in the par s, what more could you as for As well as being a hugely fun month, it’s been incredibly busy too, with so much going on. Earlier this month, I travelled to Tokyo with my husband for a whirlwind 72-hour trip, and absolutely loved it – the food, the culture, the architecture and the people all just took my breath away. I can’t wait go back! Alongside this, I’ve been really busy with my work with haircare brand Shea Moisture, hosting lots of appointments with lovely celebrities and press where I could demonstrate my favourite products from the range with them all. I also hosted a breakfast at the beautiful Dalloway Terrace with some of my favourite magazines, where we spoke about all things hair over a delicious meal – I highly recommend their Rainbow Acai Bowl by the way, it’s packed with plenty of ingredients to give you strong and shiny hair, and the o e co e ed te ace is the ost Instagrammable spot in London! @jasoncollierjc
CELEBRITY LOOK OF THE MONTH There’s been so many looks I’ve loved this month, but one that really stood out to me was Mila Kunis, debuting a chic new fringe and a blunt bob on the red carpet. Known for her boho style usually, this look is a very grown-up departure from that and feels very sophisticated. What I really love is that Mila’s kept it playful, opting for a scrunched, beachy texture to the lengths, which so many people shy away from when they have a fringe. I genuinely believe everybody can pull off a version of the fringe, so if you’ve been toying with the idea, spend the summer pulling together your ideas and get ready to go for the chop come the autumn – I don’t think you’d regret it.
MY HAIRCARE TIP FOR JULY Summer is festival season, and I’m sure many of you will be heading off to at least one during the next few months. But all that partying and days without a proper shower can take its toll on your hair, so my haircare tip this month is all about bringing your locks back to thei best hen you etu n ho e i st things fi st ash hai o e ly, and lather up twice to get rid of sweat, dry shampoo and any temporary colours you might have applied (and use the coconut shampoo to get things smelling sweet again!). After shampooing, apply a nourishing hair mask and leave on for half an hour while you have a cup of tea and regale your friends with your festival tales – if you can pop a shower cap over the top, do so as it will make the mask even more effective. Then rinse it out thoroughly and use a gentle detangling brush to get rid of any knots and frizz. Once hair is towel-dried, apply a blow-dry crème and smooth through the hair, and then loosely braid and leave it to dry, for soft boho waves without heat.

YOUR SMILE Introducing
Dr Richard Marques who is one of the UK’s leading celebrity dentists and is known as ‘The King of Smiles’.
TOP 10
MISTAKES YOU’RE MAKING WITH YOUR TEETH
1
No matter how good care you take of your teeth, you should still visit the dentist every six months. They can detect problems you might not be aware of and treat them before they become an issue.
2
Multitasking whilst brushing to save time can mean your teeth don’t get the full cleaning they need. Make sure you brush for two minutes in front of a mirror so nothing gets missed.
3
Ignoring a chipped tooth, however minor, can affect the structure of the tooth and lead to additional chips and cracks. If it’s badly chipped it could also require more serious treatment such as a root canal.
4
When you’re dehydrated, your mouth becomes dry and creates a haven for bacteria to multiply rapidly. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your oral health tip-top.
5
If you’ve had corrective braces, neglecting your retainer can un-do all the hard work they’ve done. Don’t forget to wear it for as long as recommended by your orthodontist and keep it clean!
6
We all know smoking is bad for our health, and that includes our mouths. From bad breath and stained teeth to gum disease and the potential tooth loss if not treated properly, so ditch those cigs!
7
If you don’t allow your toothbrush to air-dry after brushing, bacteria can multiply rapidly on the moist bristles. Be particularly careful to dry the head before placing in your travel case.
8
sing ooden tooth icks as a substitute o dental oss is risky as they can easily splinter and cause gum sensitivity. They’re also not very sanitary and can’t reach right between the teeth like egula oss can
9
Mouthwash that contains alcohol can actually dry out the mouth, leaving it more susceptible to bacterial growth and bad breath. Stick to alcohol free rinses for a healthier smile.
10
As you sleep, your mouth produces less saliva meaning bacteria multiplies quickly. Skipping your morning oral hygiene routine means the bacteria is hanging around in your mouth all day, so don’t skip it!

ASK THE EXPERT – knee pain at a glance Mr David Houlihan-Burne is a Consultant Knee, Hip and Sports n ury Surgeon at One Stop Doctors Will knee pain go away naturally? It depends on the cause of the pain. For example, a sprain or strain will usually heal after a few days or weeks. However, if you have had knee pain that does not go away, gets worse at night or when you bend or straighten, or is sudden and severe in onset, it could be a sign of damage or injury. The best course of action is to arrange to see an Orthopaedic Consultant or Physiotherapist who specialises in joints and bones. What causes knee pain? There can be many different reasons. In younger people, particularly those who play a lot of sport, it could be caused by damage to a ligament or the meniscal cartilage in the knee. From middle age onwards, osteoarthritis becomes the most common cause of knee pain and is a result of wear and tear to the end of the bones and cartilage in the knee joint. What can be done to relieve knee pain? n the fi st case, you onsultant ay suggest ain medication combined with a referral to physiotherapy for exercises to strengthen the muscles around the knee. If these do not work, you may need a scan of the knee. Corticosteroid injections into the joint can also be effective at relieving pain and increasing movement. If these do not work, depending on the diagnosis and scan results, your Consultant may suggest an operation such as a knee arthroscopy, a keyhole procedure to look inside the knee and repair and remove any damaged areas of cartilage, bone or ligament. Will I need a knee replacement? A knee replacement is only offered when other treatments have been tried, but the pain or restricted mobility is impacting on your everyday life. Most often a knee replacement is not needed until you’re 60 or over, but they can last for 15 years or more and allow you to resume many of the activities you enjoyed before your knee problem.

LES EAUX DE FRAGRANCE IN MOTION
Inspired by three of Gabrielle Chanel’s favourite places, LES EAUX DE CHANEL are the rewriting of a new sensorial structure responding to a single desire: infinite eshness PARIS – DEAUVILLE CRINKLED LEAVES AND BITTER GREENS This is where it all began. In the spring of 1913, Gabrielle Chanel o ened he fi st sho in eau ille, a seaside resort on the Normandy coast. According to Perfumer Creator Olivier Polge, “More than the actual reality of the destination, I like the idea urbanites make of it when they dream of a weekend away in the country.” PARIS – DEAUVILLE is a wayward signature between land and sea, layering orange rind and basil leaf with rose and patchouli.
PARIS – BIARRITZ OPEN AIR AND AQUATIC SENSATIONS In 1915, only two years after the launch of her clothing designs in Deauville, Gabrielle Chanel inaugurated a new space in Biarritz, a high society holiday destination on the Atlantic coast. “I wanted to create a sensation on the skin as if each ingredient were soaked with water,” says Olivier Polge. The top notes are energised with grapefruit and mandarin, along with lily-of-the-valley, vetiver and white musk. PARIS – BIARRITZ revitalises like a cool dip in the sea.

PARIS – VENISE ORIENTAL PROMISE AND HUSHED IMPRESSION
Shaken by the tragic death of her lover in 1920, Gabrielle Chanel visited Venice to restore and inspire her creative spirit through the unique fusion of European and Eastern cultures. “The creating of PARIS – VENISE draws inspiration as much from the long journey on the Orient Express from the French capital to the Italian city, as from the destination itself,” explains Olivier Polge. I
n summer 2018, CHANEL invited us on a new olfactory adventure. A one-way trip to a land of brand-new sensations. A singular collection. Named LES EAUX DE CHANEL, this line of fragrances evokes the train we would love to board at the last second and the destination whose name, like a magic word, need only be uttered to savour the scent of faraway places on the skin. LES EAUX DE CHANEL plunge us into unfamiliar territory with remarkable, immediate and lasting freshness that makes us want to sail away. Here and now.
Designed like an invitation to travel, the new bottle for the LES EAUX DE CHANEL collection stems from a desire for simplicity. That seemingly effortless grace of ballet dances. While highly sophisticated in its design, this new bottle conveys all the lightness of Olivier Polge’s fragrances. Fragrances for occasions, great journeys, seasons or just a weekend away, LES EAUX DE CHANEL offer new olfactory possibilities without taking the place of your usual scent. Their accessible character can be seen in the shape of the bottle that ecalls the asks o alcohol eo le used to carry in their waistcoat. The thin, lighter-than-usual glass also makes the generous bottles easier to carry. True to the exacting standards of the House of CHANEL, each detail was carefully thought out to offer a genuine luxury experience. The cap of the bottle is a prime example. Made with a thermoset (formerly known as “Bakelite”), the black stopper produces a unique sound. A noble material that required the double C signature is found inside as well, as detail that recalls the importance CHANEL places on the a less lining o its ga ents With a more generous 125ml bottle and a ounded sha e that fits in the al o the hand LES EAUX DE CHANEL introduce a new perfuming gesture. Equipped with a special pump, each bottle diffuses microdroplets of fragrance for a longer time than a traditional spray. When the fragrance comes into contact with the skin, the pump has the effect of a soft, delicate and generous cloud, thus heightening the soothing, comforting sensations upon application.

WHY BEING BY THE MEDITERRANEAN SEASIDE IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH! Proximity to the Mediterranean seaside can have a positive impact on your health: the closer you are to the sea, the better you feel. In fact, doctors have been prescribing curative trips to the shore from as early as the 18th century, and recent studies suggest the link between the seaside and health is a scientific fact.
N
ot only does the Mediterranean seaside promote good physical health, there’s much to be said for how it improves your mental wellbeing too. A week in Spain’s Costa Calida with Pilates and Yoga could be just what the doctor ordered! Entrepreneur and Pilates Expert Fran Brown runs week long Pilates & Yoga holidays with a difference in Spain. Fran says: “Here are 7 Reasons why you should plan your next holiday near the Mediterranean seaside”:
. Sea air has health benefits too. he negati e ions in sea ai accelerate your ability to absorb oxygen, and balance your serotonin levels, a body chemical linked with mood and stress. Which is why you feel more alert, relaxed and energised after a seaside holiday. MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS: 4. Being near to the sea greatly affects mental wellbeing. As you sit on the beach listening to the roar of the waves, feeling the sea breeze blow through your hair and enjoy the warmth of the sun on you skin, you eel onde ul his seaside bu is kno n as “thalassotherapy”, a term coined by Hippocrates. Researchers have found that the sound of waves alters brain patterns, which lulls you into a deeply relaxed state and rejuvenates body and mind 5. The rhythmic sound of the waves pounding the shore enables a meditative state. he benefits o editation a e a eaching stress reduction, deep relaxation, increased happiness, improved peace of mind, spontaneity and heightened creativity. 6. PHYSICAL HEALTH BENEFITS: 1. The seaside encourages physical activity, even if it’s simply a walk on the beach. Walking on the beach provides considerably o e exe cise than alking on a atte su ace, like la n his is because your body is constantly counter-balancing the uneven surface of the sand, effectively working your calves, thighs, and gluteal uscles, ithout you e en ealising it and you eet benefit from the natural exfoliation from beach sand. Swimming in the sea gives you a full body workout, improves circulation, and increases your immune system function. Studies have shown that the vitamins, minerals, and amino acids in seawater produce antibiotic and antibacterial effects that promote immunity. Furthermore, swimming in warm seawater acti ates the body s healing echanis s to fight conditions such as asthma, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, b onchitis and in a ato y diseases, as well as common aches and pains. 2. The seaside is good for your skin too. Scientists have claimed that the magnesium in seawater increases skin’s elasticity, hydrates it, and improves its appearance. Salt and potassium chloride, which are naturally found in seawater, are great healers. And, a certain amount of sun can be good for some skin co laints such as so iasis his is because a s all amount of ultra violet radiation from the sun’s rays helps dry the skin and promotes healing. Sunshine is a great source of Vitamin D too.

7. Mediterranean Seaside holidays promote healthy eating too, which in turn affects your state of mind. S
he’s become a global media icon, been one o the highest ofile voices of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, and is one of the most famous people in the world. As if all that wasn’t enough, she also played one of three ‘Astral Travellers’ in the agical a ily fil A W inkle n Time, out on DVD this month and directed by Ava Duvernay, whom she o ked ith in the 2 fil Selma.
I THINK THE DARKNESS IS THERE TO HELP BRING OUT THE LIGHT IN ALL OF US – IF WE TURN OUT ALL THE LIGHTS IN THIS ROOM AND ONE PERSON JUST HELD A CANDLE, WE WOULD START TO DISSIPATE THE DARKNESS.
Winfrey doesn’t act very often, ith only fi e on sc een oles in the last twenty years. So, what as it about this fil that had he intrigued? “One of the reasons why this is so exciting, (is) that Ava DuVernay is at the helm of that” she explains. “And I’ve said this before. It makes me well inside. Fills my heart, every time I think about Ava and her dreads and her sneakers and these big cranes and all of these men running around, taking direction from her. And to see her be the master of that, to orchestrate all of that was powerful and inspiring. I was just so proud to be associated with her and her ability to make this fil ossible o that s what was different.
as ith he on a fil he e literally we had one day to shoot everybody coming across the bridge in Selma. You got to get it before it rains, and if it rains, you’re not gonna get it. And you don’t have enough money to try it again. So, difference. Big difference.”
Finally, in a dark time for the world A Wrinkle In Time offers a little bit of hope, as has Winfrey. Her speech at the Golden Globes this year prompted calls for her to run for President, and while she is reluctant to answer those calls she ea fi s he belie in fighting o the utu e think the darkness is there to help bring out the light in all of us” she says. “If we turn out all the lights in this room and one person just held a candle, we would start to dissipate the darkness. Look at how much darkness it would take to actually envelope all the light that every candle we’re holding in this room. It just takes a little bit of light… If everyone can get that message, that’s how we have hope in the world. We’re looking for warriors who can bring out that.”

hile most young Hollywood stars are clamoring for roles in superhero movies, Chloe Grace Moretz is in search of something deeper. A superhero herself at the age of just 12 in Kick-Ass, her 13 year acting career continues to grow in momentum with her new fil , he Miseducation o Cameron Post. She plays the title role of Cameron, a girl sent to a conservative camp that specialises in ‘conversion therapy’ for LGBT+ teenagers. For the 21 year old, the biggest challenge was representing the people who experienced conversion therapy in real life. “I think it was important for all of us, individually, to be a t o a fil like this she said at a A o the fil We all took it e y seriously in terms of trying to take all the steps to make it as realistic as possible. To be as genuine to the real survivors, to those who are going th ough this on a daily, cu ent basis The young actor also revealed that one of the hardest experiences aking the fil as conducting
research that involved meeting real victims of conversion therapy abuse. “When we were in New York, still in preproduction, we got to actually meet with a lot of young people who had been through con e sion the a y she ecalls “They were really candid with their stories, and we were really thankful for them being so open with the darkness, but also the moments of being able to meet other people like you, other gay kids like you, where for the fi st ti e you ealise you e not alone. WHAT CAN I DO IN ATHENS? Set aside a morning to explore the glorious Acropolis of Athens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that sits atop a rocky outcrop high above the city. Offering commanding views across Athens, this ancient citadel dates back to the fourth century BC and is home to the ruins of several buildings, the most famous of these being the Parthenon, a former temple dedicated to the goddess Athena. Celebrities have been ocking to the site o yea s, ith e e yone o A al Clooney to Jennifer Lopez and Catherina Zeta Jones among the visitors. Afterwards, wander down the steep cobbled streets to Plaka, where you can browse the souvenir stores – picking up a white marble fridge magnet of the Acropolis for less than £1 – before tucking in to a traditional chicken gyros outside at the Karyatis taverna on Palea Agora Square. After enjoying the sights, take a taxi out to the leafy northern suburb of Ekali, where you can check into the Life Gallery Athens, a 29-room boutique hotel with a contemporary vibe and an eclectic artwork collection. The lovely bedrooms have a low Japanese-style bed and huge glass shutters on the balcony that open out to views of lush greenery and the mountains beyond. And, while it may be small, the hotel is perfectly formed, with a pool, spa and the stylish Kool Life Bar Restaurant that has an outside courtyard where you can enjoy the best Greek salad. For late-night drinks in the city, head to The Clumsies – it’s been rated the ninth best cocktail bar in the world and, after one look at the extensive menu, you can see why! At a table adorned with hanging light-up lanterns, you can enjoy Symmetry – a sweet and sour cocktail of gin, vanilla cream and pink grapefruit soda. WHERE CAN I STAY IN CRETE? A te a inute ight and a scenic hou long ca ou ney, check into the fi e sta Minos each A t otel, ust outside the charming harbour town of Agios Nikolaos. Overlooking the glitte ing Mi abello ay, the eso t s 2 hite ashed bungalo s and villas are dotted around the scented landscaped grounds and beach front. Enjoy breakfast al fresco at Bacchus, where vibrant bougainvillea and fragrant roses cling to the restaurant’s white window-less arches, offering views across the pool and sea beyond. Dinner under the stars at La Bouillabaisse is a gourmet affair, while the traditional Greek night – complete with dancers and delicious barbecued food – is one not to be missed at the foliage – covered Terpsis Cretan restaurant. By day, guests can relax by the pool, in the spa, at one of the hotel’s two private beaches or on the platforms that jut out from the sea-front bungalows and offer steps down into the ocean. Take time to explore the artworks that are dotted around the resort, too – there’s even a sound installation under the sea. head along to the ate s o ts cent e, he e indsu fing, waterskiing, sailing and diving are all on offer. WHICH STARS WILL I SEE? The Greek islands are awash with celebrities during the summer months. While some, such as Beyonce and Jay Z, cruise around the idyllic waters aboard a super-yacht, others check in for a longer stay. Lady Gaga enjoyed a two-week break on Crete after ying in by i ate et he as s otted soaking u the sun by the hotel pool. The picturesque island has long been an A-list favourite with Jennifer Aniston, Irina Shayk, Leonardo DiCaprio and Rihanna also checked in for some R&R.

Sign up for the Cretan massage in the privacy of one of the spa’s air-conditioned rooms, but you can also enjoy your treatment in a gazebo at the water’s edge. Head into Agios Nikolaos (Ag Nik as it’s affectionately known by Brits), a ten-minute stroll along the waterfront from the hotel. The Importance of Preparing Children for Secondary Transfer From September 2018 we will have a co-educational setting starting with Key Stage 1 - Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. This will enable us to now offer a mixed education, making us the only Prep School in N21 offering a top private education for boys and girls through to 11+. The move will be phased in gradually over four years and every year group will have both boys and girls by September 2024. At GPPS we believe that it is our responsibility to prepare children for secondary transfer and to support parents through this process. We are not an academically selective school on entry (what can you really assess a 3-4 year old on?) because we feel it is much more important to have parents who are fully supportive of their child’s education and will work with us to get the very best out of them. In preparing for the school entrance exams, both parents and child with the teachers support must first create mutually agreed and realistic targets. The word ‘realistic’ is crucial here, however counterintuitive it may feel. Obviously, there is nothing wrong with aiming for the highest possible results or the “best” schools, but it is important for this ambition to be tempered with a realistic perspective of what the child is likely to achieve Support of parents begins with an informal information-giving session in Year 4 and a list of all the schools with dates of open days, entry process details and exam dates. We like to encourage our parents to visit schools, with their children from Year 4 so they can start to see which type of school would be suitable for their child. This may be a local state school, grammar school or an independent school. Whichever they choose, we believe that preparations for all children are necessary. From January in Year 4 though to Year 6 we hold additional afterschool classes for the children to sit exam papers from a range of schools in Maths and English each week, we analyse the results to identify which areas require revising. We have timetabled lessons within the school day to prepare children for Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. We help children to prepare a personal profile so that they can prepare for interview by reminding themselves of their skills and achievements. We prepare the children by taking additional exams within lessons, teach interview techniques and set up mock interviews to ensure that they are prepared in every way. In Year 5 we meet with parents to give general advice on looking at and shortlisting schools. At this meeting we also outline the demands of Year 5 and what parents can expect in the way of homework and how things will work in school. Later on in the year we will meet with parents again on an individual basis to discuss in detail the child’s progress, school choices, give advice on these choices and any subject areas the child needs to work on, how to support your child through the process in maths, English and general issues to do with exam practice. The summer exams in Year 5 are sat in the hall to emulate an official exam. Once the exams are over and results are out we offer parents meetings to help decide if they are lucky enough to have a choice and/or what to do next if they have not received their chosen school. Throughout the process it is important to remember and encourage parents that we are a mixed ability school and our advice to them is based on our knowledge of the individual children in our care. This advice is based not only on the child’s capabilities but where we feel they will thrive and the best school to suit their personalities. If you would like further information on the school or wish to visit, please give the school office a call to arrange an appointment.

TERMINAL ★★★★★
Out 6th July
Margot Robbie plays a criminal mastermind leading a whole host of criminals on a wild goose chase in this eccentric crime thriller. Simon Pegg, Max Irons, and Mike Myers all play various parts in her schemes, set against a vivid neon landscape. While the plot is a little bit patchy, and occasionally nonsensical, the talented cast give their all to create something completely bonkers but very occasionally quite brilliant. If nothing else, Terminal is further proof of the star power of Margot Robbie, and that the Aussie sta s sca no ination o , onya as no uke
WHITNEY ★★★★★
Out 6th July
This new documentary about the late Whitney Houston comes with the seal of approval of the singer’s estate and promises to open the curtain on the artist’s talent and personal struggles. A little more polished than previous documentaries, this account plays things safe but is much more consistent, having a broader focus on her music but sadly less of a focus on the relationship with her best friend and rumoured lover Robyn Crawford. It’s all a matter of perspective, but Whitney is for the most part an accomplished story of a life cut tragically short.
FIRST REFORMED ★★★★★
Out 13th July
Ethan Hawke steals the show as the reverend of a small church who must confront his faith and past when he is asked by a member of his congregation (Amanda Seyfried) to counsel her unstable husband. Haunting and thoughtful, Hawke is agnificent as a an ushed to the e y li its o e e ything he believes in, and gives the type of performance that will stay with you for weeks afterwards. Sure to be one of the highlights of an already storied career, the biggest disappointment is that this wasn’t released closer to Oscar season.

THE ESCAPE ★★★★★
Out 3rd August
Gemma Arterton shines in a story that deals with some tough issues. She plays a housewife in London, underappreciated by her husband and overwrought with the pressures of motherhood. Pushed past her breaking point, she buys a one way ticket to Paris and attempts to escape. A sobering look at family life that never feels over dramatic or unrealistic, mainly thanks to Arterton’s layered performance, ably supported by Dominic West as her husband. A fascinating and often heart-breaking look at marriage, parenthood, and the struggle to cling on to your identity.
THE MISEDUCATION OF CAMERON POST ★★★★★
Out 31st August
A wonderful comedy-drama about a young woman living in the early 90’s who is sent to a ‘conversion camp’ after being caught with another girl at prom. This incredible work looks at the oppression experienced by LGBTQ+ people in very recent history, and takes a mocking view of the various techniques used by conservative organisations to ‘cure’ homosexuality. What makes it exceptional, however, is the portrayal of the bond between Cameron and her fellow camp mates, who form a community in spite of their circumstances. A moving and memorable journey.
