Surrey Sports Park. A closer look at the internationally recognised facilities at the University of Surrey.
Since opening in April 2010, Surrey Sports Park has transformed sport at the University of Surrey. As the saying goes, league tables don’t lie, and the University of Surrey has risen from 75th to 36th in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) league during the Sports Park’s short life.
A
s the full-time training base for Harlequins Rugby Union, England RFU Women, Surrey Storm Netball, Surrey Smashers Badminton and Surrey United Basketball, the venue is no stranger to professional teams and athletes alike. Surrey Sports Park also hosted 17 nations ahead of London 2012 and Glasgow 2014 and will host Ireland, Italy and Georgia as an official
England 2015 Rugby World Cup Team Base. Students at the University of Surrey can enjoy a 50m Olympic-sized pool, 120 station Health and Fitness Suite, indoor arenas, squash and tennis courts, a climbing centre, three astroturf pitches, 13 state-of-the art grass surfaces and a whole range of fitness, strength and conditioning and coaching services to match.
The University also offers a range of scholarship options for elite student athletes, meaning you can study while enjoying world class facilities and services to be ready for competition at all times.
But what do our students think of Surrey Sports Park and Team Surrey, the student sports brand at the University? VP of Sports and Recreation Dan Jacobs recognises the significance of the Sports Park to student sport at Surrey: “I have no doubt in my mind that the opening of the Sports Park has been at the crux of why sport here at the University continues to go from strength to strength. “The opportunities that students now have available to them are second to none, competing with some of the top sporting Universities in the country. With this, we have now got more students than ever engaging in both intramural and competitive sport, with our performance in the BUCS league table climbing at a rapid rate.” Business Management undergraduate Georgie Smith is equally as complimentary: “Surrey Sports Park has opened my eyes to a lot more sporting opportunities and allowed me to experience a huge range of activities. “As a keen netball player I have rapidly excelled in performances thanks to having the quality gym facilities and specialised strength and conditioning room that we get access to. But the best thing about it is it is still growing and getting more impressive by the year!”

Strategy... In the fitness industry the main aim of the game is to grow bigger and stronger through effective training. If you are having problems breaking through a gym plateau then try implementing the strategies outlined below to help you advance to a new level of training and growth. Consistency. To be consistent with your training you must first commit to your training program for a prolonged period of time (8 weeks minimum). Too many gym goers have been convinced the ‘muscle confusion’ principle is the most effective way to build muscle. However muscle is a passive tissue; therefore it must be trained the same way over a period of time to allow adaptation to occur. When adaptation occurs muscle growth follows. 6//Studentsportmagazine.com//

research
The American Dietetic Association found that it takes up to 6 months to reach a weight loss plateau.
Exercise selection. It is vital to remember that a muscle grows through increased tension across the skeletal tissue, therefore when selecting your exercises the best method of putting force across the muscle will increase size the most. What does this mean? Everyone is genetically made up with different muscle and bone lengths; therefore the most efficient exercise to stress skeletal tissue in the Quadriceps for a 6 foot 4 long limbed athlete may not be a traditional barbell back squat due to long levers, and instead more force could be generated through a seated leg press resulting in more stimulation, and in turn more growth. How does this affect me? When designing your
HIIT If you’re not used to it, introducing high intensity interval training to your routine can help you gain some great results if you are trying to burn fat. It’s difficult to do alone unless you have the mind of a Shaolin monk but if you don’t have a bud to train with, be as strict as possible.
ALTERNATIVE LIFTS You finish your lectures and head to the gym at peak time making your workout quite simply a ballache. There is always another way if the equipment you need is being monopolised by the guy who feels it necessary to use one of every dumbbell from 8-42kg for a new 16-lift cluster-set that he got in an email from Mike Chang. Weight-loss Plateau: Any plateau can cause frustration but it need not cause you too many problems. If you are trying to burn fat and have hit the wall, you can make a few sharp changes to your diet to get your metabolism back on side. If you’ve been on a restricted calorie diet for a while, having a day or two with a high calorie intake can soon shock your body into firing again.

completed will give a target to better when you next step into the gym. Muscle needs to be trained the same way over a period time in order to grow through repeated bombardment. By increasing the weight moved or reps completed the muscle must adapt. However, with practice and repetition the body will acclimatize which causes strength to plateau. Don’t be the person who lifts the same weight week after week, get yourself a logbook, use progressive overload each workout and smash those plateaus.
Choose exercises that training program choose you feel work your exercises that you feel muscles the best not work your muscles the best necessarily what you not necessarily what you have read that the latest have read that the latest Mr. Olympia is using. Mr. Olympia is using in preparation for his next competition. Get a log book. Are you accountable for knowing how many reps you hit per set on every exercise last workout? Chances are that you can remember what weight you used for your first exercise but after that it all goes a bit hazy. If you approach your workouts weekly without knowing how to better your previous workout it is not realistic to expect personal bests to be achieved. Something as simple as writing down the weight moved and rep-range
Auxiliary muscles. If you are looking to add strength to specific lifts, take a step back and look at what supporting muscles could be strengthened to improve the lift. Lets break down the most frequently referred to exercise in the gym, the Bench Press. The primary muscles used are in the Pectorals but the Deltoids and Triceps play a huge role in completing the exercise. Focus on adding strength to your overhead pressing movements, as well as your triceps through exercises //Studentsportmagazine.com//7
harder completing sets with a rep-range that is between one and five reps will be optimal for building strength. such as close grip benchpress and weighted dips. In doing so, these secondary muscles will be able to generate more force when attempting your Bench Press and help you smash through any plateaus. Generally speaking completing sets with a reprange that is between one and five reps will be optimal for building strength. By using this rep-range your training will be supporting you in getting stronger in your exercise program. Therefore by decreasing the rep-range used you will be able to increase the load lifted, which will in turn place additional stress on your body, forcing it to adapt. When completing a strength-based workout it is recommended that you use this rep scheme (e.g. 5 sets of 5 reps) for your compound lift and use higher rep ranges (8-15 reps) in your auxiliary exercises as it is very taxing on your central nervous system. 8//Studentsportmagazine.com//

on core... I’m sure there will be many university athletes carrying knocks and injuries. So while you are all enjoying your home comforts, it is a perfect opportunity to let your body recover for the second half of the season. Nutrition can provide excellent support to your recovery. The stages of muscular injury Stage 1 – Inflammation: Initial reduced blood flow, stopping bleeding at the injured site. fact
Keep on the protein shakes when your injured, you need 0.4g/kg body mass more than when you’re in full health.
Stage 2 – Proliferation: Increased blood flow, restoring oxygen and nutrient flow. Type II collagen and fibronectin are laid down, forming scar tissue. Stage 3 – Remodeling: Type II collagen is turned into type I collagen (this is much stronger). So how can nutrition help? An effective nutritional strategy can enhance the rate at which these stages occur and
heal the injury quicker. Nutrition can support the management of inflammation and the regeneration of tissue. Management of inflammation This is a very tricky stage; we need to prevent excessive inflammation that could create more damage, whilst also avoiding reducing the inflammation, preventing the removal of dead cells. The key to managing inflammation is fats. A diet high in transfats, omega-6 rich

Which Fats are Fish oils: It is recommended that you consume around 6-9g of fish oils per day. That’s Omega-3 which, unless you have been living the past decade like a Plec (Hypostomus plecostomus) in a mucky tank, you’ll know they’re all the rage and contain big science words like docosahexaenoic and eicosapentaenoic acid (or DHA & EPA
DHA An Omega 3 fatty acid that forms the main component of the human retina, sperm and the cerebral cortex. Breast milk is rich in DHA but don’t get any sick ideas.

NUTS Some studies have shown that eating nuts, seeds and/or olive oil can reduce inflammation
WHAT ELSE? You can also get stuck into avocados, flax oil, ground flax, hempseed, perilla oil, spirulina, walnuts, eggs (look for the Omega-3 labels), chia seeds, radish seeds, fresh basil, dark greens (like spinach) and dried tarragon. Maybe best to google some recipes before you fill your bowl with basil.
Injury recovery requires more protein than our average everyday needs. An injured athlete should aim to increase their protein intake by 0.4g/kg of body mass. A consistently higher intake of protein is vital to quick recovery. Supplemental amino acids arginine and glutamine have been found to support injury healing. Whilst this could mean splashing out on extra supplements you can always try tucking into red meat, eggs, nuts, lentils, spinach, milk, cottage cheese, chicken, fish and cabbage.
vegetable oils and saturated fat will be pro-inflammatory whilst a diet high in monounsaturated fats and omega-3 fats will be antiinflammatory. Ad concludere Whilst injured, our activity levels will be reduced resulting in a reduction in our calorie requirements will
drop. Be careful and ensure that your calorie intake is not too low, as it may lead to loss of lean muscle mass. Aim for around 200-300 calories above your sedentary baseline. Physical Therapy, including massage, cold/hot therapy, foam rolling and stretching, can also aid your recovery. //Studentsportmagazine.com//11

base to complete other lifts which may just give you the boost that you need to develop other parts of your body. Along with a stronger grip, you’ll notice a massive improvement in different exercises, especially targeted at back muscles, as usually most people’s grip will fail well before their back does. A dedicated forearms section will therefore enable you to isolate larger muscle groups without worrying about your grip failing first.

Try these: Seated dumbbell curl (4x12 per arm) Preacher Curl (4 x 15) Barbell Drag Curl (4 x 8) Concentration Curl (2 x 20 per arm) Remember that the contraction is key to enable your bicep to truly flex against resistance. Curling too much at a fast pace won’t cut it. Try counting two seconds up, hold for one, lower in two.

Exercises that involve free weights and cables have a point within the range of motion (ROM) when the exercise is hardest on the muscle, and when the exercise is the easiest. The point at which the exercise is most difficult is when the lever arm becomes the longest, which makes the muscles involved work the hardest. So partial repetitions do have their place, usually at the end of a set. Do ensure that when you train you allow the muscle
group to fully stretch out, followed by a strong contraction. When that muscle starts to fail and a small breather just isn’t enough, blast it with partial or assisted repetitions at the end to really squeeze the most out of your set.
NUMBERS During low volume exercises go heavy and keep a strict form with a full contraction. For the higher volume exercises drop the weight and lift through the burn!

a saw decision? The council’s planning committee rejects the project in favour of 3 veteran oak trees, putting a temporary stop on the project pending resubmission.
T by Sam Stem
SSMinvestigates :

The statement Following the decision by Nottingham City Council to decline the original sports village plans due to three oak trees on campus, the University is currently working with the council and architects on a revised set of plans that will deliver our vision for the centre whilst also preserving the trees. The expected completion date of late 2016 remains the target, and the University is confident of moving forward with the new plans and delivering this landmark development.
rees and land development are contentious bed-fellows and the objection to felling veteran trees is to be expected. Confusion has ensued in this case, however, by the alleged double standards of Nottingham City Council. Tim Garratt, Nottingham based Chartered Surveyor and Managing Director of Innes England, says that the decision is ‘inexplicable’: “The trees were not subject to a Tree Preservation order and are not in a conservation area. The University could have felled them prior to the application. “There are over 5,000 trees on University Park campus and the University was, last year, announced again as ‘The World’s Greenest’.”
The University of Nottingham is heavily invested in its green status and has committed to creating an Arboretum throughout the whole 300 acre University Park Campus, and planted 40,000 trees in 2012 in nearby woodland. As an institution far removed from deforestation, Garratt seemed perplexed by the decision.
two wrongs don’t make a right but this smacks of hypocrisy. “Last year, the City Council demolished 40 similar trees on University Boulevard to make way for an extension to the tram network. Two wrongs don’t make a right but this smacks of
hypocrisy.” As an advocate for the City of Nottingham’s business and investments, Garratt expressed concern regarding the further reaching consequences of the council’s decision.
The council SSM spoke to Stephan Richeux from Nottingham City Council who said: “The scheme had been approved and recommended by the corporate planning team but the democratic process meant that the final decision on the project was down to 14 councillors on the planning committee. As they voted 7-6 [1 abstained due to his wife working at the University.] against the development, we are now working closely with The University of Nottingham to resubmit a revised plan on the 18th of February.”

After finding out about the plans to fell 3 Vet Oaks, the Woodland Trust launched a campaign to intervene. They told us why... The Woodland Trust felt strongly enough to present a case to preserve the three veteran oak trees and, despite any preconceptions, they assured us that their decision to get involved goes much further than your archetypal anti development tree-hugging. Status. The Oaks in question are classed as ‘Veteran’, meaning that they are estimated to be between 200 and 450 years old. At this point, the trees are in an important part of their life-cycle and serve an ecological role that replacement trees cannot fulfil. Alison Kirkman of the Woodland Trust explains: “Veteran and ancient trees are really important for rare and special wildlife. The older the tree, the better the quality of wildlife associated with it - but if we don’t allow trees to reach old age, the species that depend on these trees for survival will become extinct.” On the topic of wildlife and

biodiversity, Kirkman goes on to say: “Because of the general scarcity of these trees in the countryside, many of the species that depend on them feature in Red Data lists and are nationally rare.”
if we don’t allow trees to reach old age, the species that depend on these trees will become extinct.” Campaign. The Woodland Trust told us that, as they are not a statutory consultee on planning cases, they rely heavily on a dedicated network of volunteers and members of the public to bring cases like this to their attention. They told us that, in this case, they had not been made aware of the application until the official consultation had ended but felt it important to respond and do what they could to
Habitat: Some insect species can only survive in the conditions provided by Veteran Trees. Alongside the usual nesting birds and small mammals, the unique combination of living and dead wood plays host to over 1700 invertebrates and a wide range of lichens, mosses and fungi.
Life Cycle The trees won’t live forever. Eventually they will die and rot away, but the next generation of ancient trees will be ready to support the dependent species.
SOIL Veteran English oaks create healthy soils due to the formation of rich mould from their fallen leaves. Their roots form special associations with numerous fungi like the oakbug milkcap, and holes and crevices in the tree bark offer nesting spots for the pied flycatcher or marsh tit.
ANCIENT TREE REGISTER The Woodland Trust has called for the development of a national Ancient and Veteran Tree Register. By keeping a record of ancient woodland with a detailed map of important trees across the UK, developers and businesses will save time and money by being aware about woodland that may cause potential obstacles like this. They have called for any interested parties to voice their thoughts at: www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/vitrees

Click to Vote We’re all familiar with the tales of Robin Hood and it is something of a local legend that he used to outwit the Sheriff’s men by taking refuge in the trees of Sherwood Forest. Nottinghamshire folklore would lead us to believe that the Major Oak was one of his preferred hideouts and now, some 900ish years later, the tree is up for an award. After winning the competition for Britain’s Tree of the Year, it has now been put forward for the ‘European Tree of the Year’. We might be lacking in Eurovision talent but this is one hell of a decent tree! Click above to vote!
convince the relevant parties to save the trees: “We wrote to the planning committee at Nottingham Council, as well as to the University’s Vice Chancellor to let them know why the trees were important and should be retained alongside a new sports centre.” Ancient Tree Register. Austin Brady, the Conservation Director for the Woodland Trust insisted that there is a need to create an Ancient Tree Register which would be a national map of ancient woodland and important trees,
providing a cost and time saving insight to architects and developers: “This case clearly demonstrates why a national register of trees of special interest could prevent delays to future development by helping planners identify those important to retain when designing new infrastructure. We will continue to push government to commit to such a register and thank all of those in Nottinghamshire who have supported our call so far.” Despite the immediate disappointment with the temporary
The statement “We were pleased that the Planning Committee listened to our concerns and those expressed by others, both locally and further afield, and we’re delighted that subsequently the University of Nottingham has decided to amend its plans to preserve the three veteran oak trees, which form part of a vital network of ancient and veteran tree habitats on the University campus and beyond. We look forward to seeing and commenting on the new plans and have offered our advice and assistance where appropriate. AUSTIN BRADY

Remember last year’s BUCS Indoor Track & Field Championships? It was a particularly memorable one for athletes and spectators alike. As far as records go over the weekend, the first came as early as the opening day at the EIS in Sheffield. Bristol University and Great British Olympian, Andy Pozzi claimed the first championship best performance in the 60m
Loughborough’s Amy Allcock set a record in the Women’s 400m (53.26), Jordan KirbyPolidore broke Andre Wright’s standing record in the men’s 200m (21.04) and Isobel Pooley set a new championship best (1.87m) in the women’s high jump finishing with a clearance of 17cm above 2nd place. Record breaking did seem to be in fashion which left us wondering if any future competition was going to feel anti-climatic. Hallam’s Karla Drew had

Thinking back, faces painted with reminiscent smiles, we let out an emphatic sigh at the sheer drama from Sunday’s distance events. Laura Riches (Birmingham) was keeping Nottingham’s LauraJane Day at pace in the 3000m until the previous year’s silver medallist, Bobbi Phillips (York), turned her seemingly noncontending race into an outright win on the final lap 9:54.28.

2014/15 has been a successful year so far in BUCS for the University of Leeds. In November the Triathlon Team won 3 gold medals at the BUCS Duathlon. Liam Lloyd, who is currently studying for a degree in Sports Science and Physiology, won gold in the mens individual event and both the men and woman’s teams won gold in the overall team events. Sports Scholar Gillian Finnerty is currently completing an integrated masters and PhD in Bioenergy at The University of Leeds and competed in the annual British Universities Dry Slope Championship in

The dramatic legacy of the 3000m takes us back to 2013 when Cardiff Met’s James Thie famously ruined Alex Cornwell’s day in a matter of metres. Last year Steve Mitchell was given the responsibility of preserving Cardiff’s history and he took his duties seriously, winning 7 seconds quicker than the next athlete.

a good competition as she upgraded from silver to gold in the 60m hurdles (8.41). It was a battle of the sexes in the regular 60m with Essex’s Adeseye Ogunlewe and Middlesex’s Marilyn Nwawulor taking the men and women’s races in 6.74 and 7.50 respectively.
November. Gillian had a fantastic competition winning gold in both the Ladies Snowboarding Slopestyle and Big Air event. These are the first BUCS points for the University of Leeds in snow sports for 6 years.
Lest we forget... Melissa Courtney’s near-perfect 1500m was extinguished suddenly by Loughborough’s Sophie Tyers who, with 50 metres of track remaining, clawed Courtney’s 30m lead and won!

James Forman seemingly teleported to beat Cristian Morton in the Men’s 400m (47.47) And let’s remind ourselves one last time about the relays. The finals were tasty with Cardiff Met taking the win following a Loughborough DQ in the Women’s race. The Men’s team won with comfort in 1:27.05 followed by Birmingham and Cardiff Met. The entrants of 2015 are now tasked to replenish the stories with an equally evocative exhibition of athletic excellence and with 9 more sports in addition to the athletics, we anticipate the need for a new thesaurus and a fresh list of synonyms.
