Dear Readers, tudentsXpress was created as a posititve response to violence in Chicago. It originally started out as a mini ‘zine called Peaceful Times, encouraging students in Cabrini Green to express themselves positively through their words and art. Though each issue does not focus on peace, that is still the underlying mission of StudentsXpress—to allow students a means to express themselves without violence. There are so many more benefits to StudentsXpress, such as encouraging literacy and creativity, building self esteem, highlighting positive role models, opening up important discussions and building critical thinking. StudentsXpress reaches children all across Chicago, from many different backgrounds. It expands their world beyond their neighborhood, allowing children to see how others in different neighborhoods feel about the same topics. Students read from others that might feel the same way as them, while at the same time celebrating their differences in a productive, educational way. StudentsXpress not only builds community within schools but across the city as well. This issue happens to address the topic of peace, and I found it interesting how widely interpreted the word is. Students write about world peace, freedom from violence and bullying, and just plain peace and quiet. With all that’s going on in our world and our city, the students write about what peace means to them. I’m really excited for the upcoming topics we will cover this year as well. This year’s calendar is based on survey results collected from students, parents and teachers about what they’d like to see in StudentsXpress. Our Winter issue will focus on “Family: Where I’m From,” which is open to a students’ cultural background, their nationality, their geographical location and their family makeup. Then, in Spring we’ll move to “What I’m Into Now,” which will serve as a ‘time capsule’ issue of what’s important to students at that particular stage in their life. “Where I’m Going” will end the year with what students want to be when they grow up, what they hope to accomplish—long or short term—and their dreams for their future. This year we’ll follow a timeline with the students. I hope you’ll e-mail me to let me know what ideas you’d like to cover next!

Ken C. A world of peace would probably look like a colorful place. With people—whites and blacks—together, and gays being themselves proudly. Also, no depression because that would be a happy world. —Janet M. A world of peace would look like no wars, no lives lost to war. There wouldn’t be children tortured because of their religion. —Will F.
If you get in a fight with someone you would hope to end it peacefully, so that it makes people feel better. Peace is what America is about, and that’s one of the reasons we have soliders fighting in war. Peace is how you make up with someone, who you did something mean to. Peace is a part of life, if you have it in your life it will be the best life that you will ever have. Peace is what makes the whole world better. War is not peace. You can make peace by not letting your country start a war. —John L. When there’s peace in the world is when there’s no bullies, no fighting, and everybody is happy. Peace is when you listen to people and you be who you are. You help people and people help you. You can play with people and plant some plants. Now, that’s peace! —Emma S.
. —Kendall Leonardo V. You hear it all the time. People yelling, screaming, dying, all we want is world peace. Most think it’s when everyone gets along and there’s no danger, but is there ever no danger? Will you ever stop worrying? No. Will people ever stop dying? No. And will there ever be a moment where everyone on Earth is happy? No. Someone will always do something bad. So, look at it this way. World peace will never happen, but peace will. Peace is not when everyone is getting along, but when you are happy. Peace is when you are happy, and you help others be happy, and you make the world better. Peace is when you look in the eye when you speak, and you are nice to others. There might not be world peace, but there is peace somewhere in the world. —Bailey H.

In a world of peace, everybody would be friends, there will be no violence and everybody will live a happy life. So that people won’t be killed and people won’t fight. And nobody will be homeless and have jobs. —Justice W.
A world of peace would be calm with no violence, quiet, peaceful, and with harmony. It will also look like people helping other people, not being mean to people, not killing people, being respectful, not punching and kicking people, and being friendly to people. If it stays like this all the time I think every day we will be peaceful with others and show respect. Everybody must respect others where you are and across the land.
I think a world of peace would look like a green and healthy place. No war would ever happen. Everyone would be happy and there would be no poverty anywhere. —Ali M. People need peace to be Abbey happy and nice. People will not have to stress on things if there is peace. Peace means that you are pure. Be nice to family and friends. You can make a big difference in life. Give a hug to someone and if they need help, help them. And stop fighting with someone and make peace. —Sophie

Peace is like a song Waiting to be sung This song has a lovely melody but is turned down It is turned down by conflict Peace has the option of hiding It seeks its intensions and wants to help It is shunned, rejected, hated Then it starts to hide behind the walls of violence When the time comes, it breaks through that wall It jumps at you and delivers its purposes Peace is not sung by one It is sung by the harmony of others Peace is not giving Peace gives a chase When it is caught it shows you the quest you were on As soon as you realize there is no peace Peace will come around the corner Then you will realize it was here all along and... Peace is an odd thing. It is something you may find on an angel’s wing. It is reading an outstanding book, Peace is having an open outlook. Peace is living in a quiet neighborhood. There are two ways in which we can make every day Peace Day. First, we must stop killing each other and bullying must be stopped. What is going on in the Windy City, better known as Chicago? As the summer approaches, there have been many people killed in Chicago. I think it’s crazy that old and young people are dying for apparently no reason. Every time I hear the news the announcement is usually about the number of killings for each day and the weekend. It seems as though there is no hope or prayer for the killing to stop. Peace is badly needed all over the world at this time. STOP BULLYING AT MY SCHOOL! How would I bring peace into my school? I would definitely try to find something good about everyone I see. No matter what they look like, I will try to accept them. Bullying has a negative effect especially on a young child’s life. When children are constantly being bullied, they feel as though they have no reason to live. Recently a girl hung herself because she was constantly being bullied. Hopefully if my friends hear me complimenting other students they will follow my footsteps and do the same. In conclusion, peace can be learned. I found many ways to learn peace, and they are all linked to love. —Jade F.

I live in a world with care, everybody loves to share. the world is filled with hope, we don’t sulk or mope. we aren’t all friends, but we pretend. I live in a world with peace, we don’t have wild beasts. my world is filled with love, we sometimes give hugs. we have a lot of friends, but we don’t have many bends.
If there was peace in the world, there would be no hate and no violence. In this world, people are mean to each other, and I don’t like that. Also, people do drugs and other stuff and that’s how people get crazy and do bad things. Finally, I hope in the future there will be more happiness and peace, because it will be a better world. —Claudia G.

If everyone could let little things go our world would be peaceful, well a dream come true. You can’t just change the world like that, it takes small steps. Start out with your home, then make it spread to your neighborhood, after to your city, then to your state, soon after our whole world will be peaceful. No more wars or arguments— everyone will be smiling, laughing and being happy the whole day! We only live once! You better change it while you can. It’s now or never! Our whole world should have peace! —Briyana B.

What does it mean Is it watching the trees grow green Is it no war Or is it stopping to hold the door Peace why should we do it Is there nothing to it Is peace expected from us Is it in the sky is it in the bus Where is peace Peace is at Wildwood —Nicholas L.
Peace is like love, if you can share it, you know it’s there. Peace is more than being kind, it’s about sharing your kindness with the world. As long as you can smile, you can share it. Smile, and the world will smile with you. No peace is like nothing. —Tara Peace should happen everywhere—in your house, school, classroom. In a classroom a good way to make peace is to not make a sound, don’t get in fights, pay attention. —Ari L. Peace is playing with a friend reading a book. Joy is peace, it’s having a block party. Peace can make the world a perfect place. One small act will spread to bring peace to the world. —Henry W.
We all need peace and love. We are friends. To have peace, we can stop bullying, don’t ignore people, more likely for new people, and helping people when they need help or if they are hurt. —Sophia H. Peace is something that we don’t have. The world would be a much better place. You would not have to worry. Peace. —Keegan M. —Sam C.
Peace worldwide can happen. Though it may be hard, Peace worldwide can happen. And people will keep trying, To not let peace go on; But keep in mind, that peace and love defeat evil. So Peace worldwide can happen! Peace worldwide can happen. With people BIG and small. Peace worldwide can happen! If you try, and I try, Then, Peace worldwide WILL happen! —Luciana G.
Peace is not arguing, not fighting, and always being kind to each other no matter what. —Emma You can start small, like in a house. Peace means respectful, nice, anti-bully, being friends with everyone. Start small today, go big tomorrow. Bring peace to the world! —Olivia F.

a world of peace would look like: no wars, no crimes, no damage, more harmony and a peaceful atmosphere. A WORLD OF PEACE for me is everyone happy,
not sad, having fun, not mad, everyone having a smile on their face, even the animals are happy, having a peaceful day, not fighting with anyone. For me if someone smiles, everyone smiles, and that’s what counts. Peace is no one harming each other, no insults, and hurting people’s feelings, and if they do say it in a nice way every human has peace. There’s no person that doesn’t, and if you don’t, try to find it. It’s a beautiful thing that you will never regret. —Jackie H. Peace means to me that it’s calm and quiet and there is no noise like no one is stomping their feet, no crying, no whispering. What I would do is first, I would make my house peaceful. That way I know what to do with more people. Next I would make my whole entire family peaceful. Then I will make the whole school peaceful by doing what I did in the first place. Last I would try to make Chicago peaceful. —Sophie M.
A world of peace would look like people selling lemonade to people in a nice way. People being nice to each other. Peace is calm, helpful to people, nice to everyone. In the summer when it is peaceful, people play together and that is nice. People go to the beach to play with people and have fun. People go to the yard to play with bubbles. In the winter when people make snowmen outside in the snow sometimes people join them and make them big and that is helpful. Peace is making friends.
in a little old house and in that little old man’s garden was a cow, a monkey, a lion, a jaguar, a leopard, a tiger, a cheetah, and porcupine, a bear a robin and a duck. Every night that poor old man heard them all yelling and screaming. That poor old man could never sleep. There was never peace! Finally, the old man couldn’t stand it. Later that day, the old man sold the lion, sold the bear, sold the robin, sold the tiger, sold the monkey, sold the cow and so on. Finally, he went into his little house and read some news. Finally, from then on, there was peace. —Daniel G.

“peace” means no more wars and everyone can get along with no arguments or disputes. A world with happiness and safeness is exactly what peace is to me. There will be flowers always. I will have a party for cities, countries and states. I will go to hospitals and help babies and parents stay alive. I will have fun doing a lot of things when it is peaceful. I will play ball with my friends at the beach and I will get in the water and pray that my family will be OK. Well, if people stop doing something that they aren’t supposed to do like having guns and shooting people, the world would be peaceful. But, the first thing we need to do is keep people off the street. We should give people jobs to keep them active instead of on the street selling drugs and going to jail. We can have people work at the church cause we can always use help at the church. (And that’s how we can make every day Peace Day.) —Sevean W.
Peace is a human right in the way that we all view people and things as equal. There is no war and no disrespect. We can be kind and generous to one another. Peace is showing love.
Peace means to me no shooting or fighting, a good day with your kids without anyone getting killed. PEACE. —James J.

It’s a complicated word. Like many words, you don’t know how to explain it but you have that image in your mind of what it means, what it stands for. For me, peace is a time without war, without argument. When I think about peace, I think of rolling hills, covered in wild flowers, mountains in the distance and a blue sky. I think of laughter and happiness. But how hard is it to get to peace, the hills of happiness? I honestly don’t know, I usually over think things. When I came upon the thought of world peace, I came to the conclusion that it’s impossible. Let me just explain how I got to this before you think I’m crazy. Don’t go wasting your pennies, watching them sink to the bottom of the fountain, with that impossible wish that can’t come true. World peace is even more complicated than peace itself. Do you think the whole world could ever come to agreement over politics or government? No. Every man is entitled to their own opinion, people make mistakes, someone is jealous of another person. These are some reasons world peace doesn’t exist. When someone says their opinion that offends someone or makes an action because of their opinion, where could that go? Hitler personally hated Jewish people. Why? I don’t know. But he started a world war because he dragged people down a path of disgrace because of his personal hatred towards certain people. Then there is the affect of making mistakes. Hannah Montana once sang “Nobody’s perfect” and she is completely right. Mistakes cause arguments and disagreement. I’m not saying to give up on peace, because violence can be reduced. But there will always be hatred, and mistakes and regrets. Everyone has a dark side. But if you want peace too— those hills of happiness—try not to show people your dark side. —Lucie F.

I stared at myself in the cracked school mirror, my chocolate brown hair swirl-
ing around my coco-colored face and cascading around my deep brown eyes. But, silvery tears glistened in my eyes, so I wiped them away and exited the bathroom, the heavy metal door swinging behind me. I shuffled down the hall and took my seat back at my table in the lunchroom. I sat down at the cream-colored table, littered with soda cans and other remains of lunch. I turned my head to the wall, away from everyone. It hurt so much to be teased. I sighed, feeling the same sting of tears coming to me. “Sitting alone again?” said a mocking voice. I knew who it was. Ashley. I shrugged, gulping down tears. “Ashley, please just leave me alone.” She continued anyway. “Grace, you’re such a baby sometimes. You’re crying. Then you’re going to tell on me and cry and run to the bathroom. I know that because it already happened.” She put a hand on her hip and glared at me. “Please. Just go.” “Exactly my point!” She said, laughing. Peace means to come together as one and make “Please, just. . . go,” I said, tears streaming down my face now. love. One day there was a girl named Peace who if there ever were arguments, etc. the village will always look for Peace to help them resolve the problem. This is the story behind how Peace got her power. Peace lives in a small village with her mother. Every time Peace thinks of her father she gets sad. So she tries not to think about her father. Her father died two years ago due to starvation when he was out in the middle of the forest trying to find food for Peace and her mother. At the village Peace knows everyone. Her two best friends are Charlie and Sarah. They knew the village like a spot. But the forest was a whole different thing. Peace knew since her father had died she had to help her mother. She had to go in the forest to find some food. As soon as she was about to enter the forest she prayed, looked back and went in the forest. “Wow! This is beautiful. No wonder all the wonderful animals live here.” Peace started to walk around the forest and in the corner of her eye she saw a box. It said, Dear Peace, If you ever find this ask your mother if you should open this. P.S. Make sure. Love, Your Father She grabbed the letter and started to run back to her mother. As soon as she got back to the village she ran to the house and screamed, “Mother, I found something from Papa. It was a note and a box. I grabbed the note. Here it is.” Mother read the note and said to Peace, “You are not ready yet, you are too young.” “But I am 12,” Peace said. “I know, you are too young though.” “Ahhh,” Peace screamed and stomped out of the door. She went upstairs to her room and got onto her bed and was thinking of the box. She needed to know what was in the box. Every day she would go into the forest and look at the box, trying to find what was in there. After about two months, Peace’s mother came to her and said, “I believe you are ready.... You are ready to find out what’s in the box.” “Really, you are not joking right?” “No joke, you are ready,” Peace’s mother said. “O.K. Should we venture off into the forest and find the box?” “Sure thing,” Peace’s mother said. So Peace and her mother ventured off into the forest heading towards the box. Peace and her mother arrive at the box and her mother says “Open. You are ready to.” Peace opens the box little by little and suddenly it opened all the way. In there was the gift of peace. “Mother is this why you named me Peace?” “Yes,” she responded with her hands at her mouth, about to cry. “Let’s head on back, Mother.” Sure thing,” Mother responded. When they got back at the village, Peace and her mother spread the rumor that Peace has the power of Peace. From that point on, if there ever were arguments, etc. the village will always look for Peace to help them resolve the problem. —Leonard N.

there were 2 candy kingdoms that lived close to each other. 1 kingdom was Cotton Candy kingdom because the people who lived there ate cotton candy, and the other kingdom was named Marshmallow kingdom because the people who lived there ate marshmallows. You would think they were friends with each other because they both had great candy to share with each other, but they weren’t. In fact, they went against each other. For years, they had been fighting. Fighting because each kingdom thought it had better, tastier candy than the other kingdom. So the Cotton Candy kingdom threw small fluffy balls of cotton candy at the Marshmallow people, trying to get the cotton candy into their mouths so they might admit that cotton candy tasted better than marshmallows, and the Marshmallow kingdom threw mini marshmallows at the Cotton Candy people, trying to get the marshmallows into their mouths so they would might admit that marshmallows tasted better. But so far, there wasn’t any luck in either kingdom. Everyone had been longing to end this war, but they didn’t know how to solve it right. Soon, the castles were in destruction. The walls were pounded and crumbling. Then the 2 kings decided they would have to come up with some kind of solution. So they met together and decided to try each other’s candy at the same time. So they each had a piece of each other’s candy and put it carefully in their mouths. The people watched them silently. The 2 kings chewed, then swallowed. And smiled! They beamed at each other, apologized, and agreed that they would share and become friends with each other. So there was quiet, and the people loved it. They came up with a name of it: PEACE. —Isabel Z.
Amber the polar bear sat at her desk doing homework while her older sister, Sapphire, read. When Amber was done, she went to the park with Sapphire. “Hey guys!” said Thomas, a cat in Sapphire’s grade. “Tomorrow I’m going to raise money for charity by selling lemonade. Wanna come?” “Yes! Of course!” exclaimed Amber eagerly. “I love lemonade stands.” “We’ll be there, Thomas” answered Sapphire. Natalie (or Natty) stood next to Thomas, her twin brother. “Maddi and Ralph, the rabbits, are coming, too. This is going to be awesome!” The next day, Amber went to school with a wide smile on her face. Her first class was science. “Class, sit down. Hurry up now!” the teacher yelled over the chatting children. Amber sat down. “So, who can tell me all the planets from largest to smallest? And don’t you forget to name their moons,” said Mrs. Briar, the teacher. “Amber, please recite.” Amber felt blood rushing hastily to her face. Her heart was pounding to the point of bursting. “Amber, we don’t have all day,” Mrs. Briar said. Amber’s mind went blank. She had studied the night before, but the answer just wouldn’t come to her. Amber went to her snowboarding competition after school. She was the best kid on the team and everyone knew it, but she made sure to be modest. “I expect you to do great,” said Amber’s coach firmly. Amber got that feeling again. It was a nervous feeling, but more extreme. She could not describe it. Her turn to go came, but when she went off the jump, she landed and fell backward. This was a simple jump that she had practiced many times and aced. How could she miss it? After the embarrassing competition, Thomas met her at the park. “Ready to sell some lemonade?” he asked. “No! You are so mean! You should know I hate lemonade stands,” Amber cried and ran home. Amber went up to her room and wept. All the hardships from the day just poured out in tears. After a while, Sapphire came home along with Maddi, Ralph, Thomas, and Natty. Ralph went to Amber first. “Amber, you look very upset. Do you need anything?” “No! I don’t, and I don’t like you at all anymore!” Amber answered. Ralph, Maddi, Thomas, and Natty left thinking that Amber needed some time alone. But they were hurt. But Sapphire realized that this could not go on any longer. “Look, Amber,” she started. “Go away!” said Amber. “I don’t need you!” “I understand what you are going through. You are at the age when you first start to feel stress,” answered Sapphire, ignoring Amber’s comment. “But if you handle stress the wrong way, it can do bad things to others, too. When your own peace is disturbed, sometimes people take it out on others which ruins their peace also. Our friends understand how pressured you feel to be perfect. I think that they can help you with that.” Later that week, Amber gradually learned how to give herself peace so that she could spread it to others. Thomas and Natty, the most organized ones, taught Amber how to keep her stress levels down by making todo lists and writing in planners. Ralph and Maddi showed her how to stay peaceful all the time. And Sapphire helped her with sports. Your being not peaceful can affect others, and denying help from friends will only make their peace disturbed also. —Linnea S.

Once upon a time there was a man who would always try to make peace. He would always want to make people happy. But no one would want to make peace. Then he got old and he gave up. A few days later, a little boy noticed the man not being there. The little boy went to the old man’s house. He asked the old man, “Why do you stop trying to make peace?” The man said, “No one has listened to me.” “I have,” said the little boy. “So has my family.” We can all try to make peace together—me, you, and my family.” They all made peace. How can that be considered Peace can do anything Without peace there is no hope “Disturbing the peace?” War is stubborn Without hope there is no peace I will Not Disturb The Peace But peace always gets through If we want there to be some peace you have to settle all your problems I will Not Disturb The Peace —Kylie H. and we’ll celebrate with a peace celebration cake I will Not Disturb The Peace I remember the girl I pranked running after We sat there by the willow thinking of today me and saying Thinking that the world will be happy some day “Run Puck, brun but karma will get you for Peace is peace and peace means hope this!” The thing I remember most is Jimmy’s Let’s have peace and live in happiness red head and him crying. Peace is peace and peace means hope I will Not Disturb The Peace Hope means hope and hope means chances I will Not Disturb The Peace (repeat chorus) I will Not Disturb The Peace When Ms. Eve said “Don’t disturb the peace The world sat by the ocean thinking of today Puck” did she mean... happiness? I disThinking that the world is happy today turbed their safety and their mood at the Finally peace is hear time. I made OTHER’S day... Horrible. There is hope there is no fear I will Not Disturb The Peace We all love peace so let’s show the world what peace really means I will Not Disturb The Peace ~To the tune of Firework, by Katy Perry I REFUSE TO DISTURB THE PEACE Ashley H. —Aanika P. —Lavinia S.
