TRAPPED IN A CAR In February of this year, Swedish police saved a man from his snow-covered car. Forty-four year-old Peter Skyllberg, who is from the small town of Umea in northeast Sweden, was trapped inside his Volvo car for two months and managed to stay alive by eating a few sweets and drinking melted snow. After clearing nearly one metre of snow from the Volvo, which was on a small road in the middle of a forest, two policemen were surprised to find a man asleep in a sleeping bag, on the back seat of the car. When he was found, Peter was very weak, tired and hungry. He told doctors at Umea Hospital that he had been trapped inside the car since the middle of December, after becoming stuck in heavy snow. According to Dr Ulf Segerberg, who is Head of Umea Hospital, it is possible for a person to survive without food for quite a long time. Luckily, Peter had some water to drink because humans cannot live without it for more than a few days. Dr Segerberg also said that Peter had lost between fifteen and twenty kilograms of weight between December and February. The thick snow covering Peter’s car had kept him alive for two months because it had made the inside of the car warmer than the outside. Speaking from his hospital bed, Peter Skyllberg said, “I am a very lucky man indeed.”

SECTION A: READING Part 2 10 marks
THE NEW FOREST The New Forest is a large area of woodland situated in the South of England. It is one of the United Kingdom’s fifteen national parks. The forest was given its name by King William the First of England in 1097. He called it the ‘New Forest’ as he had never seen it before. William often used the forest for riding and hunting. Many types of animals live in the New Forest today. The most famous are the small wild horses known as New Forest ponies. There are more than 3,000 of them living in family groups throughout the forest. There are also around 1,500 wild deer which, if visitors are lucky, can be seen in various parts of the forest. The deer, however, are very shy creatures. The people who live in the New Forest are mainly farmers and foresters. As some of the land is open, farming of cows and sheep and fruit and vegetable growing are possible. The foresters are responsible for the care of the wild deer and ponies and also for looking after the many thousands of trees. There are many things for visitors to do in the New Forest. For example, there are deer and butterfly farms, many beautiful walks and a number of historical places such as Beaulieu Abbey. This was once a large church, but is now home to the National Motor Museum. Visitors can see over 250 types of old cars, buses, trucks and motorcycles. What began as a place for an English king to hunt wild animals and ride horses is now one of the most beautiful and interesting places to visit in England.
