FERREIRA DE SÁ

Since 1946

Located in Espinho, in the north of Portugal, Ferreira de Sá was founded in 1946

by Joaquim Ferreira de Sá, and it is currently one of the oldest existing companies producing traditional hand-made rugs.

It started off as a small manufacturer but quickly evolved to a large-scaled

organization. An industrial unit was created, with modern equipment and facilities, without neglecting the origins and tradition of the art of weaving. Since all the carpets are custom made, every project is unique and personalized, bearing in mind the clients’ personalities and tastes.

At Ferreira de Sá, there are no boundaries for creativity or innovation. Your

imagination is the limit…

Using nothing but the finest natural materials, the rugs ensure an everlasting beauty look and an extremely high resis-

tance to traffic. Wooden looms are used, in which two distinct sets of yarns are interlaced amongst the weft and warp to form different patterns and personalized designs.

After the briefing, leave the rest to the team. The commercial and design teams have the competence and the know-

-how to choose the most appropriate rug for your space (indoor or outdoor). Production is possible up to 5 m width, whilst the length is limitless, being suitable, inclusively, for wall-to-wall installations. Our

Weaving has been part of human history since the beginning of times. Nowadays,

in Ferreira de Sá, the same traditional wooden looms from 1946 are used, creating unique master pieces, woven by hand. However, it also has the modern looms to manufacture the updated requests of the demanding and luxurious market.

Proud of the heritage , they cherish and rely on the expertise and know-how acquired over the past 74 years to con-

tinue to create new designs and products without ever neglecting the origins of the art that they master. Whether it is a small rug, or a large carpet, they focus on each detail to ensure that it is perfect.

Every step of the manufacturing process is carefully controlled and each piece has its own ID card, where even the

name of the artisan that wove the rug is registered. Being a certified company (ISO 9001:2015), all processes and methods are submitted to TÜV Rheiland Portugal accreditation rules and standards.

In an era dominated by mass production, it stands out not only for the excellent quality that characterizes their products

but also for the bespoke concept that they offer.

This collection is the reflection of the dedication and commitment to the art of weaving. It is also a result of the fantas-

tic creative work developed in-house by the talented team of designers and artisans with over 70 years of experience.

Creating a Ferreira de Sá rug is a unique experience. The techniques are flexible

- with design (6 possible designs) - combination of designs - custom-made design (if adequate to the technique)

The hand-weaving techniques allow clients the possibility of creating a bespoke

rug. As shown in this chapter, it is possible to play with different patterns and use more than one in the same rug. Each Set of Designs includes a group of patterns which can be woven into the same rug,

to reach perfection and deliver the best and most perfect rugs to the clients.

When the order includes wall-to-wall or inset carpets, and to ensure a perfect

finishing touch, the expert team of fitters is always ready to travel the world and install them.

Ferreira de Sá offers clients a premium service: the whole process starts at the

workshop, with the selection of colors, design, shape and all the features of the rug. But, if the client wishes, it also ends in it’s hands to complete the installation of the carpets on the spot.

Whether it is a residential, or contract project, Ferreira de Sá makes sure that the

final result is a dream come true.

SAUDADE LOOMS

These rugs are named after a Portuguese word, “Saudade”, and are exclusively

produced at the factory, in the traditional wooden looms. The manufacturing of this complex technique is only possible by the hands of artisans, who have been working for many years. This technique has been kept from 74 years ago, when the company was founded, as well as the colors and renderings used back then.

Characterized by its vintage look, Saudade rugs are versatile and can be produ-

ced in different designs giving them a unique look.

Our jacquard looms enable the production of a wide range of patterns that

are grouped in seven different sets. This gives liberty to combine patterns, colors and materials, to suit each client’s taste. Creating a bespoke rug is a unique experience and at Ferreira de Sá the whole pro-

cess starts and ends at its premises. Prior to the manufacturing, its design team elaborates the rug’s artwork which is sent to the client, together with the matching yarn poms.

Besides having its own color system, they also work with international reference

systems such as Chromatone, ARS, Pantone TPX and Pantone Fashion+Home.

These rugs are produced manually in our traditional looms and the weaving process is called flat weave,

Inspired by the sea, the outdoor rugs are produced with the most durable and refined polypropylene ropes,

since no knots are used and the surface looks flat. Two perpendicular rows of threads, the warp and

To further extend the lifetime of your rug, Ferreira de Sá recommends a regular maintenance so that the rug may retain its shape and appearance. If you have a light, single color rug you will need to care for it more often than a darker, patterned rug. It is also a good idea to use a rug underlay to prolong the life of your woven rug and prevent it from slipping on any type of floor. Thorough vacuuming is the best, most economical and environmentally friendly method of cleaning. Beating or shaking a rug may damage the fibers. It is most efficient to vacuum the rug one direction at a time.

Cleaning advice We recommend that the rug is cleaned by a professional cleaner, using the extraction method on a flat surface. The quantity and temperature of the water will depend on the material. Good ventilation during the drying process is essential. Shrinkage will be about 3-5%.

Choosing a rug Choose the characteristics of the rug, its color and design to suit the space in which it will be laid. If it is to be laid in a hall, for example, you may choose a type of rug that is more resistant to wear, and a color that is a little darker and dirt-tolerant. Use a rug as a means of bringing together the rest of the interior. Decide whether you want to place a sofa on the rug or at its edge. If a rug is to be placed underneath a dining

I r re g u l a r S h a p e s Hand-Woven Rugs are only produced in Rectangles or Squares. If you require an irregular binded/circular/oval shape, please note that the rug will be produced and cut post production. Any shape other than rectangular or square requires to be boud with tape or selvedged.

-Note that rugs from Ferreira de Sá rugs are made from natural materials. Variatons in colour and texture can therefore arise between batches of yarn and dye baths. -Rugs should be laid on an underlay that prevents them from moving on all types of flooring. This extends the life of the rug and reduces the risk of slipping.
