INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT + ARCHITECTURE Site location: Eagle Pass, TX, USA Project type: Infrastructure Date: January 2011 - April 2009

Site Analysis / Diagram Architecture/Urban Planing is the method to descrive the history of lands. Each site have their own history and background. When I started to design site, there are already some geometric shapes. It really works as new site location analysis. From the existing block conditions, I took two lines which are crossing the design site. They split the block to two shapes, and the space between the lines become to pedestrian corridor. Some historical building could be the potential geometry in the site. The Eagle Pass trans-

potation site has historical train station. It creates other lines to separete more. And, these lines make meaning each site location what they should be. Design concept As far as Eagle Pass is border town to Mexico, there is a lot of influence from Mexico culture. The Jarabe Tapatío is the title of the musical piece and the dance that accompanies it, which is accorded the title of the “national dance of Mexico”. It has become a folk dance popular throughout Mexico and the Southwestern United States.

Thus, I take the geometry of dance, which is circle/oval. And, I apply with groin vault, which is flexible rib vaults of Gothic architecture. Groin vault creates the oppotunities of the two ways pedestrian walks. Moreover, the roof system design is conbined with density/ openness study.

When studying about the city, edges are always existed in many place. Building facade is one of the edge’s elements to create cities and streets. Building facade usually containes solid (such as brick, concrete, and stucco wall) and void (such as glass window and open- ing door). They could be classified as density and openness. If the building have more density area, it will be closed to 100% ratio. If the building is constracted by more glasses, it will be 0%.

004/005

1. Existing condition - hidden line According to existing geometry, there is a possibility of creating new corridor.

3. Typologies In order to create a modern and sustainable city I propose to preserve the building with the historical background, and add new geometry line to create more separations.

2. Separation of building plot Creating new corridor into site splits the block to four different function plots.

4. Creating more path + plaza To create city center scale plaza, I add more geometry line to separate buildings and a common area.

5. Applying functions Eagle Pass Downtown has unique shape of blocks in east side. It could be used as existing geometry for the site that will be designed for trainstation + urban development. Existing lines will show the potential pedestrian walkway, and split the site to define the each project locations. In addition, there is one building that used to be old train staion. It could be histrorical building; therefore, it will use as another exsiting geometory.

+ Jarabe Tapatio

Open roof system concept From the density / openness study, I generate two type of lines. These two line will work as ratio and orientation of each roof. Grasshopper with Rhino helps to create this system. From the diagram, when red line (orientation) is closed to top line, the roof rotates by each single axis. It always opens to north side. Therefore, the train station will control all south side sun light. In addion, blue line (ratio) makes different shapes of each roof system.

Project statement Theater of exchange is the statement of this project. We need to produce a space that people can trade their idea. As project, designer should define, structure, and celebrate a particular exchange, and the project should be in critical response to its particular situation. Moreover,

it should be a critique of piazza itself and be in dialogue with the urban fabric. Design concept Considering the problem and the solution of piazza, there is abandoned film school located opposite side of the design site. Since the site has only 400 sq.ft,

it can be designed as recording station, which will produce people’s connection between private and public. This basic idea started from analyzing the basic site geometry. It creates a fundamental room separation by following space function, also.

Design Program This project had held as design competition by USGB. We had to design affordable housing for low-middle working class people. The project site meets two major problems to designing the housing complex. First is direct sunlight from the west because we must consider the heat produced; however, the site opened to the west which we could conside as nice view. Another problem is noise, which is created by the surrounding area such as higway and electric power substation. Thus, the two problems have to be solved.

Design Process Designing process started from separation of space functions such as where is more public area and private area. According to the function, the building would be two-story housing. In addition, the solution for both problem is to make wall at both side of east and west. To reduce to gain heat during summer, to maximize air circulation system is the best answer. Therefore, the house is made a form to create air fow from downstair to upstair with opening to south to north.

Design Program The Pearl Brewery is an urban village in the making on the river In San Antonio, Texas. Now, Pearl Brewery is an adaptive re-use development intermingling restaurants, urban residences, galleries, studios, and shops, office, and so on. In addition, they want to make some building for some educational program.

Design Concept [Drainage basin + Symbiosis] Pearl Brewery is being made with the concept of the urban village next to the San Antonio River. My con- cept starts from the connection between river and human. In addition, I thought about the connection between the river and the nature. Therefore, as my fundamental concept, it is the symbiosis. As my design concept, it is the drainage basin.

Design Program Considering our rich heritage, the Air Force Village Board of Directors and staff are moving forward with a thoughtfully designed long-range plan that focuses on the opportunities and challenges affecting the Air Force Villages today and into the future. As part of the overall program Air Force Village will be adding new independent living options, new dining options and replacement skilled nursing care facilities for both campuses, and a new spiritual center at Air

Force Village II. Design Concept The design concept would start from “people’s lifetime line.” This village is for the people who already retired. All people have a lot of experience in their life. They had their own life before coming to this community. So I thought the design should represent their old and new life at air force village.

Architectural Concept The site is facing to many aspects that have opposite views. For example, street and pond, private and public. In addition, we can add four more component; nature, human, fast and slow. Therefore, this site must cooperate with these eight view. My design shape started from “octagon shape” that represent this aspects. Moreover, this octagon shape will cooperate to existing building shape also.

ALAMO HEIGHTS DIGITAL LIBRARY Site location: Alamo Heights, TX, USA Project type: Mixed Use Date: August 2010 - December 2010

Design Program Alamo Heights is an incorporated town that is completely surrounded by the City of San Antonio, Texas, in Bexar County. Alamo Heights has only over 7,400 populations by 2009. Moreover, Alamo Heights is located next to the towns, Terrell Hills and Olmos Park. So, there is no space to grow up more. Alamo Heights’ residents are usually middle class to very wealthy. The residents usually keep stay in the town; therefore, there is not interesting development project. In 2010, Alamo Heights does not have any kind of public library in the town (closest library is San Antonio Public Library, located in the Monte Vista Historic District in San Antonio) even there are many primary, secondary, and university. Thus, they need to make new library, and not just normal library. As far as I said, Alamo Heights has small land, and small populations. Digital library will be best proposal idea of their library.

for City of Alamo Heights Design Studio Project

Design Process Alamo Heights is one of the old cities in San Antonio. There are many historical buildings; therefore, my concept started from analyzing the existing building profiles in Alamo Heights. Most of the buildings include church or city buildings have pitch roof that is most common roof type in many place. I took the geometry of the shape of roof and mirror to other side. Moreover, it is not just continuous roof. By separating to two parts, it will be the landmark of each building, and it will help to identify the buildings’ functions. In this project there are three types of systems: digital library, cafe, and residential units. Cafe is the common place to use both residents and commercial people. Thus, cafe is located between two major functions, library and residential units. So, the break point of the roof shows the location of cafe. In addition, to apply a different type of geometry feature to cafe’s façade take up the impression.

Mixed-use buildings usually assign 1st floor with commercial units and 2nd floor with residential units. For this project, I flipped these room functions to horizontally and separated to create community area. Cafe will be defined as a part of community / social area. Therefore, it located between two buildings. Moreover, applying city/building code for deciding building height is main factor of design process.

Team Description + Project Background Began in May of 2010, Volunteer Initiative San Antonio is a group of four architectural college students (Daiki Tsutsumi, Garrett Brown, Ben Rosas, Aldo Vega) eager to apply their talents for the improvement of their community. This is a Design + Build project, and it is for the Southwest Center for Higher Independence of a non-profit organization called The Methodist Mission Home. The SCHI program is designed to teach disabled young adults to

become independent productive members of society. My roles of this project are designing pavilion and ADA ramp, visual presentation, which includes 3d modeling and rendering, and construction works.

Project Description From the team’s site analysis, we proposed four different pavilion locations. According to the SCHI and the local designer’s request, we decided to design and build / rebuild a pavilion, landscape, and ADA accessible ramp at side of SCHI pool area. The structure’s shape was intended to mirror God’s hands as the young adults with disabilities literally “rest in the shadow of the Almighty” (Psalm 91:1). Moreover, the orientation and vertical proportion of the pavilion are designed by the base of computer application analysis about the best sun shading. The horizontal proportion is based on repetition of square, which is the proportion of SCHI students art work. Landscape design is followed the human movement, which will not be too rigid. It becomes more flexible shape.
