TAKSU Singapore kick-starts the new year with Nasi Campur - an eclectic mix of works by 22 artists. Adopting the name of the traditional staple meal of Southeast Asia, Nasi Campur puts together the freshest mix of works in one plate. Nasi campur (‘mixed rice’ in Indonesian) is as diverse as the archipelago, with regional variations across the country. A nasi campur counter offers up to lots of different selection dishes, usually a blend between the local favorites and delicacies from the region. Since its first debut in TAKSU KL in year 2005, Nasi Campur has become a signature annual exhibition in each of TAKSU’s three galleries. Offering a glimpse of TAKSU's careful selection of works, Nasi Campur is a platform where artists of diverse origins meet: established and upand-coming, painter, sculptor, photographer, mixed media artists, local, regional, international - all in one plate. Nasi Campur features works by: Agus Sumiantara (Indonesia), Bobby Nuestro (Philippines/USA), Budi Agung Kuswara (Indonesia), Choi Chongwoon (South Korea), Dodit Artawan (Indonesia), Fauzulyusri (Malaysia), Frayn Yong (Singapore), Gerardo Tan (Philippines), Hirzaq Harris (Malaysia), Jan Wisse (Netherlands), Joe Fleming (Canada), Jumaadi (Indonesia), Kang Dong-Gu (South Korea), Koh Sankeum (Korea), Lai Ngan Corio (Malaysia/UK), Monika Behrens (Australia), Najib Ahmad Bamadhaj (Malaysia), Nizam Abdullah (Malaysia), Oh Sang-Taek (South Korea), Pow Martinez (Philippines), Rochelle Haley (Australia), Sabri Idrus (Malaysia).

Free flowing tension between abstraction and figuration became the main characteristic of Bobby Nuestro’s oeuvre. He has been exhibiting extensively, with some of his previous shows include: Leche F/plan (2011), Cultural Practice (2010), Nuestro at the White Cube Gallery Metropolitan museum of Manila (2008), Trace/Retrace with William Gaudinez at Alliance Francaise Makati (2006), Drawing Room in TAKSU (2003) at TAKSU Kuala Lumpur, Nature Paintings: In between the Mountain & the Sea (2001) at Pasilyo Edades, Cultural Center of the Philippines. Budi Agung Kuswara, also known as Kabul, left his hometown Sanur in Bali in 2002 to pursue Fine Art studies in Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta. Since 2003 to date, Budi Agung Kuswara (Kabul) has participated in numerous group exhibitions in various galleries and art spaces in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bandung, Denpasar, Magelang, as well as in Manila, Italy, San Francisco, and United Kingdom. Floating Desire, Budi Agung Kuswara’s latest series of work, started with his memories of growing up by the shores of Balinese beaches: the sensory experiences of playing in the water, swimming in the midst of the ocean, and the joy of surfing smoothly, dancing with the waves. Floating Desire, to him, is the desire for survival, to keep himself on the surface, to resist the gravity that pulls him down. Not only that this experience occurs when one is underwater, this applies for anyone from any walk of life too. The desire to continue to live, the need to stay conscious, and the struggle to stay afloat are rooted in our existence.

Repetitive labor- intensive process is meaningful to Korean artist Koh Sankeum, she would like to invite viewer to meditate of the meaning of language and experience a pure aesthetic beauty of it. To explain about the work process, she carefully chose the right size of white shiny cultivated pearls or stainless balls as main materials. And she selected the certain length of texts which gave her a deep impression for the contents of her works. Those texts would be from news paper articles or theoretical writings or novels and poems. And then San placed pearls on mounted wood panel following each word until those pearls are gradually transformed into the illegible abstract lines and forms. The viewer would only guess the original texts from the title, but could see the aesthetic beauty of language which was invisible before. Upon receiving Masters of Fine Arts at Pratt Institute in New York, Koh Sankeum established her career in New York as a professional artist. She mounted three solo exhibitions and actively participated in numerous group shows in New York. After moving back to Seoul, Korea in 2006, Koh Sankeum became a recipient of an artist residency at National art studio, Goyang and Gyeong-gi Creation Center. From 1981-1990 she worked in the film industry prior to entering National Film and TV School, Beaconsfield, England. Oscillating between a career as an artist and a successful graphic designer, Sabri studied fine arts at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) from 1995-1998. The following year he mounted his first solo exhibition, The Search of the Uncertainties (1999). It would set the foundations for his art-making – a preoccupation with surface, spatial stacking, temporality and organic fluid forms – a kind of signature that is easily traced across Sabri’s career to this most recent suite of paintings, Masa series.
