Life may appear to follow accordingly to our plans and judgments, but in reality we encounter the unexpected through coincidence and chance in unpredictable ways. Coexisting in our lives are two contradictory concepts. There is the ‘planned’, implying control, regulation, and rationality, and then there is ‘chance’, evoking spontaneity, freedom, unpredictability, and emotion. Often times it is difficult to identify with just one of these attributes. It is human nature to have dual or even multiple states within, thus the ‘rational and emotional’ tend to coexist in our everyday lives. In any given moment, our decision to act with reason or emotion in response to an event merely represents how we will interpret, engage, and comprehend that experience. Universally speaking, when communicating any situations or inner experiences we inevitably face such constraints. “Between Sense And Sensibility” presents the works of Spanish artists, Miguel Angel Iglesias and Matias Krahn, both working in Barcelona, artist Shoji Kato working in Helsinki, and the works of Korean artist Daeho Guk.

Through his use of striking colors, Miguel Angel Iglesias brings forth a tangible atmosphere to the urban setting. Taking colors from the world of his subconscious, he applies them to the rigid surfaces of city buildings. The juxtaposition of elements from the world of order combined with the elements of the imagined completely transforms the buildings beyond their static architectural form. Born from the bold impulsive colors is a new lively environment that presents a harmonious balance with its surroundings. Yet the dark shadows cast down from buildings remain as a reminder of the viewer’s perception of reality against the color world, expressive of the viewer’s emotions and soul.

The artist’s strong love for nature and human life are evident in Matias Krahn’s works. Using multiple layers of soft pastel tones, the artist builds up playful textures incorporating colorful natureinspired symbols with circular motifs and patterns. The combination of intuitive gestures that mimic the scribbled drawings of a child and accidental paint drips evokes an emotionally charged visual experience for the viewer. It is much like witnessing the melodious voice of several singers in harmony through the guidance of a great conductor. Krahn’s abstract paintings may appear intuitive and effortless at first glance, but are in fact the result of a combination of carefully composed compositions, planned with intent and resolved through his skillfully trained understanding of visual content. m ati as k ra hn b . 1 97 2, s pain graduated with a Fine Arts degree and Post-graduate studies from Barcelona University in 1997 and 1998 . In 2 00 4, he did his PHD of Fine Arts with excellence (Cum Laude) unanimously with the thesis called: Postmodern painting and the end of modernity: between pluralism and avantgarde. In-between painting and installation, the works of Shoji Kato seek to capture the traces of our existence in history as its underlying theme. The series ‘Mirrored Moment’ consists of a two-panel painting made of watercolor on paper set side-by-side facing each other. As the title suggests, the two panels appear like two mirrors reflecting off each other. Upon the surface are delicate marks resembling tiny molecules of living forms that grow into crystal-like clusters. Despite their symmetry, each panel is created from two separate processes, one of restricted and the other of improvised approaches. One side represents the resulting image of intuition, chance, and freedom, while the other side is the product of purpose, reason, and control. By presenting them in the same-shared space, Shoji’s ‘Mirrored Moment’ blurs our perception of what is emotion and reason.

dae ho guk b. 1967, korea completed his BFA in Painting from Seoul National University in 1992 followed by his MFA from the department of Arts Plastiques, Paris8 National University in 1998. He had his first solo exhibition in 1995, since then he has done a total of 34 solo shows and participated in numerous group exhibitions, art fairs and biennales in Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Miami, Dhaka, Sydney and Rotterdam. Dae Ho Guk was listed as budding artist for the year by Paris-Gallery Association in 1996 and selected as one of the best young artists by Young Artists Association in France. His works are in the collections of several of Korea’s major museums, including National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea, Busan Museum of Art, Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Daelim Museum, Gwwangju Museum of Art and 63 Sky Museum.
Daeho Guk’s paintings on canvas appear like the blurry out-of-focus pictures taken by an amateur photographer. As Guk traveled to New York, Paris, and cities throughout Italy, he captured moments of the city scenery that left a lasting impression on him with his camera. These images may appear trivial for visiting tourists but are embedded with deeper meaning for the artist, as they represent a specific moment in time and place. The reinterpretation of these preserved moments from photograph to painting are the artist’s attempt to narrow the gap between the universal subjective and objective experience. The camera becomes a necessary device for the artist, allowing him to capture unique details that portray his experience of the city. Guk specifically utilizes an out-of-focus blur technique known as ‘Bokeh’ effect in photography to control what is brought into focus. By translating these techniques into paintings, Guk seeks to encourage a universal bond of recognition and sympathy shared between artist and viewer.

Through process, a common ground can be found among the distinct visual languages of these four artists. Evident in all the works is the underlying theme of duality found in “sense & sensibility”, reason and emotion, the plan and chance, restriction and freedom, caution and audacity. By addressing the coexistence of such concepts, “Between Sense And Sensibility” not only reflects but also represents the sometimes conflicting, yet always-present contradictions found within our own lives. Perhaps through acknowledging this idea of ‘coexisting contradictory concepts’ we can search for the clues in our unpredictable and everchanging lives.
