Style Guide

Introduction As a regional/country Development Marketplace (DM), you represent a promise to our partners and applicants: a promise of quality, transparency, and innovativeness. Each Development Marketplace is an exciting experience for everyone involved, and we believe that this experience starts with effective communication. In fact, you do not only represent the competition you are organizing this year; rather, you represent what the Development Marketplace is about and how it is implemented throughout regions, countries and themes. This document provides guidance on how to use the DM brand, and create communication products with targeted messages and a unified visual identity. When all DM competitions speak the “same language“ at the global, regional and country levels, we embody the same values and attributes, and support each other in fulfilling our promise of quality, transparency, and innovativeness to donors, participants, judges, the media and World Bank staff. The Global DM team has elaborated this style guide to support you in incorporating the DM graphic standards throughout the competition – from the design phase to the final event. The objective of this effort is to standardize communication across competitions and, most importantly, to save you from dedicating time, resources and efforts each year to the creation of new materials. In the following pages you will find templates for different products adapted for regional and country competitions. These materials are also available in Adobe Illustrator or In-Design formats. The DM communications officer will support you, or the designer hired by your team, to adapt these materials and find solutions that best suit your specific communication needs. The success of this communication effort will take the commitment of each and every one of us. We count on your support and participation and look forward to working with you closely on your next upcoming competition.

About the Development Marketplace This regional competition is part of the Development Marketplace (DM), a competitive grant program that identifies and funds innovative, early stage development projects with high potential for development impact and replication. Administered by the World Bank and funded by various partners, since 1998 DM has awarded more than $54 million to innovative projects identified through country, regional and global competitions. A number of the projects then go on to scale up or replicate elsewhere, winning prestigious awards within the sphere of social entrepreneurship. SOUTH ASIA

INNOVATE FOR NUTRITION

While the 21st century has seen remarkable technological advances, about 26,000 children underfive years old still die every day; and in up to half of these deaths, the underlying cause is undernutrition. South Asia has the highest levels of undernutrition among all regions – and is also the region with the largest number of malnourished children in the world. While rising food prices have increased global attention to hunger and undernutrition, they also serve to exacerbate these problems in South Asia where poverty is expected to increase significantly. Addressing undernutrition is particularly important as undernutrition impedes productivity, economic growth and poverty reduction. A child who was undernourished during its first two years of life is less likely to complete school and will earn, on average, a 10-17% lower income than one who was well-nourished. There is an urgent need to build a strong, healthy and wellnourished population that can make the most of education and employment opportunities available in today’s rapidly globalizing world.

The Regional Development Marketplace (DM) Development partners and others need to urgently tackle the severe malnutrition situation in South Asia. One way of doing so is through a Regional Development Marketplace. The goal of the South Asia Regional Marketplace on Nutrition is to identify and fund innovative ideas to deliver improved nutrition to pregnant women, infants and young children during their first two years of life. The DM will invite proposals from all South Asian countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) under the theme: “Family and Community Approaches to Improve Infant and Young Child Nutrition”.

How the Regional Development Marketplace Works An open call for proposals will be launched in early February 2009 and NGOs, civil society organizations and others will be invited to submit their proposals by March 31, 2009. Proposals will then undergo a thorough assessment process involving development experts from the World Bank and the greater nutrition and development community, from which about 70 shortlisted candidates will be invited to present their ideas at the South Asia Regional Marketplace even to be held in Dhaka, Bangladesh in August 2009. Approximately 25 winners, selected by a jury of distinguished nutrition and development experts, will receive award grants of up to US$40,000 to implement their project during an 18-month period.

Previous Development Marketplace Winner VillageReach, a winner at the 2003 Global Development Marketplace (US$249,741) launched an integrated approach to improving rural access to health services by building and managing a small scale rural distribution network for life-saving vaccines and medical interventions in a remote section of northern Mozambique, in a long-term partnership with the Mozambique Ministry of Health. The project leveraged DM funds to raise US$7 million from foundations including Gates, Skoll and Hunter, as well as the Dutch government. The project now serves more than 5.2 million people through 251 clinics. VillageReach’s founder, Blaise Judja-Sato, was Skoll Foundation’s Social Entrepreneur of the Year in 2006.

Note: The grant size of the Global Development Marketplace award (maximum US$200,000) is greater than South Asia Regional DM (maximum US$40,000).

The DM is a competitive grant program administered by the World Bank. The 2009 global competition is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and additional DM partners and it aims to identify 20 to 25 innovative, early-stage projects addressing climate adaptation. The DM is a unique opportunity to turn your idea into reality; if selected your project could receive up to US$200,000 in grant funding for implementation over two years. Competition Theme The grant competition on climate adaptation focuses on three sub-themes: 1- Resilience of Indigenous Peoples’ Communities to Climate Risks Promote Indigenous Peoples communities’ and organizations’ development of innovative ways to conserve agriculture, land, water and soil management practices; apply innovative adaptation plans and communication strategies based on Indigenous systems to accelerate learning and knowledge sharing on climate change adaptation. 2- Climate Risk Management with Multiple Benefits Empower poor communities to test innovative, low-cost strategies to spread climate risk and forge innovative partnerships that increase vulnerable communities’ access to climate risk management knowledge, information, and services that produces multiple social and environmental benefits; use innovative means to help educate communities on climate risks that leads to empowerment for action. 3- Climate Adaptation and Disaster Risk Management Develop innovative arrangements that diffuse climate-related disaster risks faced by the poor and vulnerable; create innovative low-cost approaches for spatial planning for climate resilience and for construction of housing and local infrastructure resistant to climate-related disasters; improve the capacity of local communities to access and use multi-hazard risk information to enhance their early warning systems and other community-based responses to climatic extremes and climate change.

Who can apply? Special eligibility criteria apply to sub-theme one. For sub-themes two and three, non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, foundations and development agencies based in the country of implementation may apply without additional partners. All other groups must partner with at least one organization; the type of partnership varies across types of applicants. Individuals cannot apply. For more details on partnerships and eligibility criteria check the guidelines on the DM website. Language Consistent with past World Bank small grant programs for Indigenous Peoples, proposals for sub-theme one may be submitted in English, Spanish or French. For sub-themes two and three, proposals must be submitted in English. How do I apply? Proposals must be submitted through the DM online application form available on the DM website. The event guide or book of summaries has the summaries of the finalist projects and general information on the Marketplace event such as the program, partners or examples of past successful winners. The following template is for the front and back cover of the guide. We suggest, when possible, to print this document on recycled paper ( see Model A.) Although this document is mainly used at the Marketplace Event as event guide, you might consider to remove this title from the front cover in order to distribute extra copies of the book throughout the year at other relevant meetings or events. There is no template for the internal pages of this document.
