Editor’s Note
I
t’s been a fulfilling winter. The drumline boys who are staying with my place are practicing just about every weekend are vastly improving. I can’t ever remember ever being sooo busy, every day for months. I’ve been watching show line Jujutsu Kaisen, Ō-sama Ranking and other random anime I haven’t considered watching. At the same time, we watch anime that I’m actually interested in. I was also intro‐ duced to a lot of new Japanese music that I normally don’t come across. Yes, these past few months have been a great learning experience. Starting this new year, I’ve started go to conventions once again. Starting off in Janu‐ ary is Animé Los Angeles. They moved to a new venue to the Long Beach Convention Center because they’ve grown so much. This was the same reason they moved from the LAX Marriott to the Ontario Convention Center a few years back. The next convention I went to was quite surprising. It was the SoCal Gaming Expo that used to be the SoCal Retro Gaming Expo. It blew away all my expectations, so please read the article about my experience at this convention.

hinka no Mi: Shiranai Uchi ni Kachigumi Jinsei is very much the typical isekai, harem-style story proliferating out there nowadays. You have a protagonist whisked away to another world, who builds up strength or powers through adventuring and does or defeats something extraordinary. But this lighthearted story does have its own unique charm to add. The main protagonist starts off as the lowest of humanity while striving to do his best in this isekai comedy. There’s no way around the spoilers that will be coming up. The story is centered around a less than ideal main protagonist, Sei’ichi Hiiragi, a second-year high school student. He was an unsightly character with bad body odor. Surrounded by good-looking people in his class, he sat alone in the corner of the classroom all by himself every day. Because of his appalling appearance, being short, fat, and ugly, he had been the constant target of bullying since kindergarten. Over the years, he’d basically become everyone’s errand boy in order to get by. Then one day at the end of school, God made an announcement through the school PA (public addressing) system. The school kids were to be teleported to another world and forced to be heroes to fight the upcoming Demon Lord. They were ordered to form teams within ten minutes, but un‐ surprisingly, Sei’ichi wasn’t accepted into any groups. He was left behind as the students around him started dis‐ appearing one by one. Pitying Sei’ichi, God granted him a “special skill” and teleported him away with the rest of his classmates. The kids who had grouped up were all sent to safe ar‐ eas, but Sei’ichi was taken somewhere else. Waking up in the middle of a forest all alone, he was faced with the reality that he needed to find a way to survive as soon as possible. Despite looking for food and dodging wild ani‐ Saria (Kaiser Kong)
mals for an entire week, he couldn’t find anything edible. On the verge of starving to death, he heard some rustling and spotted a group of monkeys (called Smart Monkeys), arms full of fruits and nuts, being chased by wolves. One of the football-shaped nuts fell from the arms of a mon‐ key and he crawled to it desperately, his life literally de‐ pending on it. Studying the fruit, his God-given skill, “Analyze” activated, informing him that the footballshaped nut was called the “Fruit of Evolution” and was not poisonous. He took a bite and, though it tasted ter‐ rible, finished it ravenously. A voice suddenly rang in his head saying that the seed’s effect had begun… but Sei’ichi felt nothing. Wandering in the direction the Smart Monkeys were heading towards, he found them as well as their stash of “Fruit of Evolution.” After the sole Smart Monkey that was left behind walked off, he took the remaining fruits for food. Surviving only by relying on the fruits as a last resort, Sei’ichi was also foraging for nuts, grasses and mush‐ rooms. On occasion, he ate something that was good for him, his skills would begin to level up and he would start acquiring extra skills like resistance to poison, resistance to confusion and so on. And after winning his first fight with a Smart Monkey who succumbed to his bad body odor, Sei’ichi started to evolve. Upon its defeat, the Smart Monkey, dropped a bunch of drop items: some rare weapons, edibles, materials, currency and special cards that allowed him to learn additional skills. Before he re‐ alized what evolving entailed, his body started deform‐ ing, muscles tearing, bones cracking, limbs bending strange directions, all causing him extreme pain, culmi‐ nating in his body parts rearranging. bigger muscles and a more chiseled face. For the next few months, he kept on evolving, increasing his stats and col‐ lecting loot by fighting Smart Monkeys and Aqua Wolves. From here on begins the adventures of Sei’ichi after surviving in the forest, later revealed to be named the “Forest of Endless Love and Sorrows.” Starting from this forest and continuing on his journey to the town of Terviel, Sei’ichi begins to add girls to his “harem”. The first, Saria, his bride, was actually originally a Kaiser Kong (the gorillas of this world). Faced with a near-death en‐ counter, she ate a Fruit of Evolution and as her wounds healed, she evolved into a beautiful girl. However, she re‐ tained the ability to shift back into her simian form and as a Kaiser Kong, Sei’ichi calls her “Goria.” Next to join was Altria Grem, a human adventurer who was afflicted with a curse, calamity occurs wherever she’s at. She be‐ came his girlfriend after she confessed to him. Next to appear is Lulune, a donkey originally bought by Sei’ichi to participate in a race. One thing led to another and after eating the Fruit of Evolution, transformed into a beauti‐ ful, gluttonous human and became his “manservant.” Af‐ terwards, Sei’ichi was brought to the castle to spend the day with the Valkyrie Knight, the nation’s female knights, as his prize for winning the race. He met with the cap‐ tain, Louise Balze, and the two fought in a mock battle, resulting in her defeat. This was the first time she had ever been bested in combat and, hoping to learn more from him, decided to become Se’ichi’s student. Last to join Sei’ichi’s group is Olga Calmeria of the cat people. She was originally a slave of the Kaiser Empire and sent to assassinate the King. He freed her from slavery and she became his adopted “little sister.” One other girl that crossed Sei’ichi’s mind here and there and caused him to worry about her wellbeing was his childhood friend,
Karen Kannazuki. She was the student body president who had also been teleported to this world as a hero, and therefore was sent with the other students to a safer place… the Kaiser Empire. What I found most interesting about this web novel is the nonsensical, comedic plot line. Sei’ichi and company somehow manage to get themselves involved in all sorts of strange situations and, having numerous special abili‐ ties and skills, he always manages to find unique ways to problem solve. For example, the events (spoilers) that let him to “rescue” Olga from being an assassination slave from the Kaiser Empire. Olga attempted to assassinate the King of the Wimburg Kingdom, but she failed and was captured and interrogated. They found out that she was wearing a slave collar. Because there was no way to remove the collar without killing the person, Sei’ichi “created” an original magic to remove it safely. Sei’ichi also created an original magic to remove a curse Olga in‐ flicted upon the King. Although these situations seemed dire, the way Sei’ichi creates the magic is really comedic which lightens the mood. It’s these whimsical and zany moments that really kept me hooked on this web novel. For most of the beginning of the story, it was never clear whether or not there was supposed to be a main antagonist. After meeting up with Saria, they did fight the dark lord Zeanosu, but they defeated him and moved on. A while later when Altria joined in the fray, they went dungeon crawling and fought the Black Dragon God and just managed to scrape by with a win. It wasn’t until much later that we discovered that the main antagonists are the Demon God Cult and the Kaiser Empire. The Demon God Cult is a faction of demons that want to take over the world by attacking or working behind the scenes to create chaos in other kingdoms. invade the Winburg Kingdom, but it was repelled by Terviel’s perverted, S-ranked adventurers. The sur‐ rounding countries were invaded by the Kaiser Em‐ pire to “unify humankind” against the demons. Only a few countries had remained un‐ touched, though there was nothing stopping the Em‐ pire from casting its eyes in their direction in the fu‐ ture. The Cult and the Kaiser Empire also tried to invade the Varshal Empire, but Sei’ichi accidentally got involved and took care of the invaders. At this time, the web novel version, written by Miku, Shinka no Mi: Shiranai Uchi ni Kachigumi Jinsei (The Fruit of Evolution: Before I Knew It, My Life Had It Made) was only available in an English fan transla‐ tion. I took my writer’s prerogative on the spelling of the names based on my knowledge of the Japanese writing system in this article. Aside from the official anime translation, there’s this fan-translated web novel and the Wikipedia entry… all had small differences in the spellings. This title is also available in light novel and manga formats, but as of yet, the light novel remains untranslated and unlicensed in Eng‐ lish. The light novel is illustrated by U35 while the manga’s art is by Sorano. The official English release of Shinka no Mi was the anime that streamed in the West in autumn of 2021. I started reading this web novel by the time news broke that the anime was to

begin airing in Japan before last October. I wanted to know what the story was about… something with a fruit? As I continued reading through the early chap‐ ters, my curiosity grew more and more. I became more interested in Sei’ichi’s nonsensical adventures. As each new girl joined Sei’ichi’s party, the author always took the time to give them thorough backgrounds which helped me to become more invested in the characters. But when it comes to the setting of the story, this is where the author fails to describe the towns, cities and places that Sei’ichi and company travel to. This is the web novel after all… version 1.0, the most raw and un‐ polished version of the story. In the light novels, Miku most likely expanded in this area, but I haven’t had the chance to read them yet. When they do become available in the West, however, I really look forward to reading them. For those who watched the anime, yes, the anime did a disservice to the web novel, in my opinion by glazing over certain details a bit too much for my liking. So I do recommend reading the web novel to give better clarity and depth to the plot lines featured in the anime. Oh yeah, since this web novel is a comedy at heart, expect a lot of fun tsukkomi and boke-styled* shenanigans. ❖ E. Tanaka *“Tsukkomi” and “Boke” are terms used to describe the two members of the Japanese Manzai style comedy duo. The tsukkomi is the serious, no-nonsense type who often corrects the errors and misconceptions made by the foolish, silly boke.

GLM: Hello everyone, we’ll be having an interview with Hoshi Cosplay. Again, than you for you time for this in‐ terview. For those who are new to you, would you tell a little about yourself. HOSHI: Thank you for having me! Hello everyone, I am Hoshi Cosplay! I was born and raised in Southern Cali‐ fornia, and I’ve been cosplaying since 2016. Growing up, I was always into video games, but I didn’t actually get into anime until around the end of high school. I really didn’t really know what anime was besides Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh. One day, a friend wanted me to watch a show with him called “Fullmetal Alchemist”(some of you might have heard of it before), and I was kinda reluctant at first because anime was “for weirdos.” At least, that was what my main friend group at the time thought, but the show looked interesting, so I decided to give it a try. Ever since then, I have been hooked! My favorite anime are Full‐ metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Hunter x Hunter (2011) and My Roommate is a Cat, and my favorite video games are Kingdom Hearts and Persona 4 and 5! My other inter‐ ests include playing the piano, being with friends and family, and cuddling my cat.

Temari GLM: The first time I met you was back in 2019, Animé Los Angeles. I took a photo of you in your Lucy cosplay from Elfen Lied… with the vectors! I was very impressed. What was your first cosplay and what inspired you to cosplay that character?

HOSHI: Thank you! Wearing Lucy at ALA was probably one of my favorite memories at a con. Like I said, I wore my first cosplay in 2016. It was a cosplay of Makise Kurisu from Steins;Gate that I bought online. Back then, I had never gone to a con before, but I had heard about a con called “Anime Expo” that was the place to go to if you were an anime fan. As I was doing my research before going, I saw pictures of people dressed up as anime characters. I thought that it was sooo cool, and I just HAD to do it if I was going to AX. My anime obsession at the time was Steins ;Gate, and I just loved Kurisu. I actually still have the cosplay, but not the wig. GLM: Wow! That’s cool that you cosplayed Kurisu. I happened to be that me and a friend cosplayed as Rintarou and Kurisu at AX 2019. This was my friend’s first time doing a "group" cosplay and joining the Steins;Gate cosplay gathering where she had a blast! You mentioned you bought your Kurisu cosplay online… with the consecutive cosplays you’ve done since, other than buying, have you made your own cosplays? What’s your take on buying or making a cosplay?

HOSHI: I have made a few of my cosplays including Lucy, Shadow Futaba from Persona 5, and Yuzuriha from Dr. Stone. My fiancé helps me out a lot when building my cosplays. At first, we were more focused on prop build‐ ing, but within the last year, we have pushed ourselves by improving our sewing and wig styling skills. I still will buy cosplays if it’s more practical or is a better value. As
for the whole buying vs. crafting debate, I really don’t mind if a cosplayer buys or makes their own cosplay be‐ cause I just consider it a hobby, and I just have a blast cosplaying characters I like and meeting people who en‐ joy the same series I do. However, it is a really great feel‐ ing debuting a cosplay I worked hard on and getting recognition for it.

HOSHI: I usually cosplay characters I really like or admire. To be honest, I think I enjoy cosplaying characters that I’d like to be like more than who I relate to the most. My favorite characters are usually confident and strong fe‐ male characters, whereas in real life, I’m pretty quiet and introverted. Although I still do enjoy cosplaying cute shy girls! Basically liking the character and their design is what makes me decide who to cosplay. GLM: I have seen from your social media that you cosplay various characters since your debut. Although I cos‐ played a fraction of what you cosplayed, what challenges did you face cosplaying that variety of characters? Also, what was your most rewarding experience cosplaying any one character?

GLM: It is a good feeling debuting a cosplay you made yourself. That’s the feeling I had when I debuted my Au‐ ron cosplay from Final Fantasy X, one of my favorite video game characters. It was the only cosplay I created with my own sewing skills, not the best, but happy with the results. Also, Auron is a character I could relate to. When you choose a character to cosplay, what make you decide on that particular character? Like me, someone you can relate to and looks cool? A character you like? The character’s costume looks cool/pretty?

HOSHI: One of my biggest challenges is when I think a cosplay won’t turn out how I envision it. There is a perfectionist within me, and I get stressed almost every step of the way if I think that the cosplay is not going to turn out the way that I want it—especially if I am con crunching. My fiancé is pretty good at calming me down and reassuring that it’ll turn out fine, which it usually does. Wigs are also a huge struggle with me. I get worried that I’ll cut it too short and have to get a new one. Recently, storage is probably my biggest challenge... With so many cosplays, I’m running out of space, and I have a hard time letting go of my old ones. I think one of the most rewarding experiences cosplaying was when so many people admired the vectors that I made for Lucy. They were really impressed, and I had a lot of peo‐ ple ask how I made them! GLM: Yes, those vectors were pretty memorable. It reminds me of the appendages coming out of Kaneki’s back from Tokyo Ghoul also. I know how difficult it is to make props. The only major prop I made was Auron’s katana sword which was made out of styrofoam and a wood dowel as the handle. My second attempt was the magic staff used by Shiroe from Log Horizon. I thought it was sturdy, but fell apart after I swung it once before debuting it as con. You mentioned before that you and your fiancé worked on cosplay props. How was your experience in making props for your cosplay? And what lessons have you learned from making those props?

HOSHI: I had a kind of similar experience with my vectors. I thought that I would be okay walking around the con
with them on my back, but once I was walking through the crowds of artist alley, I realized how flimsy they were and how much I had to be careful with them. Building props involves research as well as trial and error. We have attempted to create props many times before realizing that the technique we were using would not work out for what we were creating. Creating props can be challeng‐ ing in both a good and frustrating way. One thing that I have learned is that you sometimes have to make a com‐ promise. Recently, we made a spear for my cosplay of Ju‐ dith from Tales of Vesperia. Although I wanted it to be sturdy and durable, that would have made the spear ex‐ tremely heavy and hard to carry around at a con, so I had to settle for a material that I had to be a little extra care‐ ful with while taking it to cons so that I don’t damage it.

GLM: I do concur. You do have to be extra careful carrying large props around the con. With my Auron’s sword (which is slightly shorter than myself ), the only time I can rest it over my shoulder is when there’s nobody within six feet of me. I might swing it the wrong way and hit someone by accident which I try to avoid at all costs. In close quarters, I hold it in front of me… almost hugging it. With all the experiences you’ve gained over the years cosplaying and prop making, have you considered this to be a possible profession? Or you think that cosplaying could lead you to an alternate future profession… like fashion design or the‐ ater for example? Or you consider cosplaying a fun hobby?
HOSHI: I always considered cosplay to be a fun hobby and a way for me to make friends. Cosplaying does sound like a pretty cool profession to have, but I already have a career that I am happy with and have invested several years into. Recently, I have become a little more estab‐ lished with my career and therefore have more free time and funds, so I have thought about dedicating more time into my cosplay. I actually have a couple of shoots planned with photographers coming up in the next few weeks, which is something that I have never done before. Most of the pictures I have are either home shoots or con photos, so I am pretty excited.

GLM: I’m sure you will have an excellent time with cosplay photographers. I also do photography and have done cosplay photo shoots in the past at cons, but only a hobby. And only people who I know or a direct friend of a friend. You mentioned that you started cosplaying in 2016. Aside from the lockdowns we had recently, which of the anime (or any) convention was your favorite? Any why? Since life is somewhat going back to some normalcy, have you ever though about attending conventions in other states? HOSHI: My favorite con is Anime Los Angeles. I went for the first time in 2018, and I think that specific year was the most fun time I had at a con‐ vention. It is big enough to feel like there is always something you can do, but it’s also not too big where it’s hard to find friends. Most of people I met through cosplay were through ALA. I was a little skeptical when they announced their loca‐ tion change, but I went this past January and had such a great time. As for other cons, I went to my first non-California con this past summer, which was Anime Matsuri in Houston, Texas. Going to other big cons in other states is definitely on my to-do list. GLM: Same here. Animé Los Angeles is my all-time favorite local anime con also. So much that I’ve been a volunteer for their program guide for the past few years. Yes, ALA hits that sweet spot in convention sizes where it’s not too big and not too small. When ever someone asks me which convention they should start with, I always recommend ALA. HOSHI: Choose a character you are passionate about and go for it. It doesn’t matter what your cosplay ends up looking like whether you buy or create it- there will be at least one person at the convention, online, or wherever you show it off who recognizes the character and will bond with you over their love of the same character. Those bonds and the friendships that follow are what make cosplaying worth it.

or as long as I have been a casual video gamer, I always wanted to go to a gaming convention. But what I knew about video game conventions is ba‐ sically like game tournaments. I don’t mind video game tournaments, but I’m not thrilled about them either. That all changed when the pandemic occurred. With a lot of time on my hands, I began watching more YouTube videos than ever. As a retro gamer myself, I started watching retro gaming channels. That’s when I discovered that there are game conventions that have nothing to do with tournaments… or where tournaments were not the main draw. I started looking into retro game conventions in my area and found the SoCal Gaming Expo (previously the SoCal Retro Gaming Expo).

In the past couple years, SoCal Gaming Expo had been postponed… but all that changed this year! My expectations were blown out of the water. For one, I did not think that there would be this many people—the turnout was very impressive. Another is the demographic of the attendees. I expected an older, male dominant crowd, but instead, there was a varied demographic. When we arrived at the convention center to get our badges, there was a long line that awaited us to get in. It stretched to the sidewalk and curved. But it didn’t take long to enter the convention center. What I failed to notice was there was another event at the convention center. There were people that were wearing martial arts “gi (gee)” uniforms. Since I knew there was only a gaming convention, I thought there were a lot of Street Fighter cosplayers attending. In actuality, there was a martial arts competition on the other end of the con‐ vention center. The first thing we did after receiving our badges was go to the vendor hall. There were a lot more vendors than I expected. I started looking around the retro game vendor tables for deals and to add more to my collec‐ tion. My main mission was to collect games that I lost over time primarily for my Atari 2600 and Super Nin‐ tendo Entertainment System, as well as games for my other retro consoles. There were four isles of vendors and by the time I was half way through the second isle, 86 Genki Life Magazine | Spring 2022
I became overwhelmed by all the looking around. This had never happened to me at all the anime and comic conven‐ tions I’d attended in the past. I took a moment to regain my composure and recover and then continued on. It was around noon when we went to a panel hosted by YouTubers Pat, the NES Punk with Ian Ferguson. It was an awesome panel by these two hosts that I follow on YouTube. I think I learned more about college drinking, The Highlander and heavy duty mayonnaise than I would have ever expected. Seriously. Because of all the major news going on at this time, there’s not been a lot of video game news. We did touch on a little of Elden Ring, but not much. The next event we went to was a cosplay contest. I actu‐ ally didn’t expect a lot of cosplayers at this gaming event, but for the size of the event, there were quite a few. It went fairly quick, but with a good variety of cosplay. There was also one cosplayer that I recognized from Animé Los Angeles back in January in the cosplay fashion show. For the rest of the afternoon, we went around the vendor hall once again. By this time, the crowd thinned out consid‐ erably. I was able to better look for what I’ve been looking for, but the reality is that most of the “good” stuff was sold by this time. And after the main convention ended at 5:00 pm, there was a screening of the Adventures in Game Chasing movie produced and starred by The Game Chasers. Sunday wasn’t as crazy as the day before. When the con‐ vention opened up, it was easy to go around the exhibit
hall. I had a better look at each booth for the games I was looking for. Right around lunch was when the crowd grew and became harder to walk around. That’s a good thing, though—Sunday is the day everyone is looking for deals and vendors run discounts to move more inventory before the end of the con. The rest of Sunday was also fun. We had a chance to talk to a few of the vendors and random people throughout the rest of the con. My day pretty much ended right after John Rigg’s short panel. Apparently, he forgot the drive that had his presentation on it, so he winged the rest of the panel by talking about how he made connec‐ tions throughout the homebrew community to where he is now in his work. The SoCal Gaming Expo at the Ontario Convention Center this year was an excellent experience. It threw all the misconceptions I’d had about these types of gaming con‐ ventions out the window. I had a chance to interact, albeit briefly, with YouTubers that I follow and I got to meet a lot of like-minded people that shared the same (or more) pas‐ sion for collecting retro video games… and more recent video games also! The panels were entertaining, interactive, infor‐ mative and fun. I hope that this convention will happen at the same venue next year. For any gaming fan, retro and modern, this convention is worth attending… even if it’s for the wow factor or for just plain ol’ nostalgia. There’s unex‐ pected fun, things to do, entertaining panels, a lot of good deals, and interesting personalities to meet. ❖ Ed Gomez Genki Life Magazine | Spring 2022 87
