We are proud to continue as a sponsor of the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions in 2019. J.P. Morgan believes in conducting first-class business in a first-class way, and in collaboration with ToC, this tournament is truly an extraordinary partnership. We happily support the world-class squash stars who will rally the crowd in this competition, and are pleased to expand our support of the sport globally as the title sponsor of the China Squash Open. We maintain our support to ensure that the world’s best women will receive the same compensation as the world’s best men as they pursue the prestigious world ranking ToC title! We are pleased to invest in the squash stars of the future through the tournament’s support of two outstanding youth programs, StreetSquash and CitySquash. StreetSquash is a Harlem-based, after-school youth enrichment program that combines academic tutoring, squash instruction, college preparation and mentoring. CitySquash, based in the Bronx at Fordham University, helps students achieve their academic, athletic and personal goals through squash from elementary school through college graduation. Students of both programs are invited to the squash tournament and many of them volunteer to be part of the event. A select number of students from these programs are nominated for the prestigious opportunity to participate in a clinic with the pros. We are happy to announce that the contribution to both programs will be enhanced through our social media campaign for the “J.P. Morgan Experience,” as they will receive a portion of the proceeds for each ticket sold. We hope you join us to raise a racquet during this exciting week of matches in one of the most beautiful arenas in the world. We are glad to carry on this great New York tradition as this event celebrates its 22 nd year in Grand Central Terminal TM!

The kind of squash New York eats up. We’re honored to support the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions.

2019 Honorary Champion – Beth Rasin It is a very great pleasure to recognize Beth Rasin as the 2019 Honorary Champion of the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions. Squash has been an essential part of Beth’s life since college and she has given back to the sport at every stage, but it is the past nineteen years that earn her this particular acknowledgement. Beth and I crossed paths in the 80’s and 90’s as competitive hard ball squash players, but our professional lives intertwined in 2000 when she came on board the ToC in our second year back in Grand Central after its renovation. She started by coordinating program ad sales, managing our modest media affairs and, thankfully, being the eyes-and-ears on the ground in NYC for this Boston-based boy. Her impact on the tournament grew exponentially from there until she earned our Associate Director title, managing everything from media, promotional agencies, legal affairs, proofreading, NY Squash relations, volunteers and more…an arc that often swung from the mundane like crew catering to the profound like strategic planning. And in between, she attracted major media institutions like the Today Show, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times to report on squash and the ToC. I started this award three years ago when I realized that there were people in the life of the ToC who had made outstanding contributions to both the sport and the tournament without necessarily ever being properly recognized. Beth’s smarts, humor, dedication, tireless work ethic, legal perspective and passion for the Tournament of Champions made the tournament better…every year and every day. However, perhaps Beth’s singular contribution to the tournament was her determination for women to be equally represented and compensated a feat we achieved four years ago and one which fittingly makes her the first female Honorary Champion of the ToC.

Dedication – Don Goodwin, 1930 - 2018 For those of you, and there are many, who have been fans of the Tournament of Champions for more then five years, you will remember the velvet tones, sincere and personal remarks and love of sport from our long serving Master of Ceremonies Don Goodwin. The highly awarded and honored Canadian journalist and long time tennis coach was perhaps the singular elegant hallmark of the tournament in the days when Melissa Winstanley and I were ducktaping electrical cords, plugging in clamshell phones and buying cups and ice at the local drug store for the “VIP” lounge. In addition to deploying his voice-of-God timbre, whether to introduce players or sign off each edition of the ToC by saying “Safe home, everyone,” Don edited and published our daily drawsheet and our program. Melissa and I, together with Don’s friend and protégé Will Carlin, who now stands somewhat modestly in Don’s size 13 Hushpuppies, and the entire ToC Team dedicate the 2019 Official Souvenir Program to Don.

SQUASH THE RISK

7 Preventative Tips to Avoid Achilles Tendon Injuries

It’s 9-3 in the Fifth. Things are going my way: my body is warm, and I am moving fluidly throughout the court. My opponent hits a drop. I push-off to retrieve the ball, but there is no movement—just a sudden POP! I turn around in dismay and sternly ask my opponent, “Why did you hit me in the back of the leg with your racquet?” I suddenly realize my opponent is not behind me, but in front. Unable to take a step, I fall to the ground in agony as I realize what has happened: I’ve injured my Achilles Tendon.

Although there is no perfect preventative measure, here are a few tips to help decrease your chances of rupturing your Achilles Tendon:

Throughout my twenty years of experience as a physical therapist, I’ve heard this story repeated far too often. Achilles Tendon ruptures occur when the big tendon in the back of your lower leg tears mid-tendon, or pulls off the bone where it attaches to the foot. When a rupture occurs, there are varying treatment options available depending on your lifestyle. Long-term casting may be used for a relatively sedentary person, but typically does not achieve great results. For a more active person looking to assure a normal lifestyle again, surgical intervention is the best option. This injury is mainly seen amongst the “Weekend Warrior” population but can occur at the highest level of play as well. Amanda Sobhy, current PSA World #13, has just recently returned to play after rupturing her Achilles last season. Manek Mathur, current SDA World #1, is the most recent professional to face this injury. While Manek is just embarking on the long journey to recovery, Amanda sums up the challenge of the experience: “The rehab process was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to endure, both physically and mentally.”

1. Stretching: Having good length in the calf musculature allows the Achilles to lengthen appropriately in times of maximal stress, such as pushing off to retrieve a ball. 2. Strengthening: Good lower leg and intrinsic foot strength is important for stabilizing the foot/ankle in preparation forxballistic movements. 3. Correct Shoes: When playing squash, wear a shoe that provides good rear foot stability and helps maintain proper biomechanical positioning. 4. Warm Up: Active warm-up exercises, such as calf raises, are essential for providing blood flow and elasticity to the lower leg musculature. 5. Massage: Regular massages will help with recovery after play, promote muscle relaxation, and create needed tissue length. 6. Cross Training: Participating in other sports and training principles helps limit repetitive stress injuries, challenges different muscle groups, and prevents mental burnout. 7. Recognizing Achilles Pain: Redness, tenderness, or pain to the Achilles is an indication of overuse. Most importantly, don’t ignore the pain or wait around for it to feel better. Make an appointment to see a physical therapist as soon as possible to get a treatment plan started. For more advice from the nation’s top physical therapists, visit spearcenter.com/sports.

After what was by his standards a disappointing 2016-17 campaign, World No.1 Mohamed ElShorbagy bounced back in ferocious fashion last season to re-establish himself as the sport’s World No.1 - winning the 2017 PSA World Championship and six other major titles in the process. Known as ’The Beast’, ElShorbagy’s hard hitting and remarkable physicality make him a tour de force when in full flow and a player who has the ability

to simply destroy even the very best of opponents. After reclaiming the World No.1 spot last season, the 30-year-old English-based Egyptian said his time at the top of the sport is only just beginning, words that will make him an ominous threat for every event he plays this year. He has perched atop the world rankings for 39 of the last 51 months. ElShorbagy’s dominance in 2018 included PSA Platinum-level wins at

the Windy City Open in Chicago, the US Open in Philadelphia and the Hong Kong Open. He is the No. 1 prize money winner on Tour, but recently a real rivalry has emerged with compatriot Ali Farag. Mohamed’s younger brother Marwan is also a consistent “top 8” level threat, making the ElShorbagy brothers one of the top competitive siblings in sport in the world. The elder ElShorbagy won the ToC in both 2015 and 2016.

A 2014 graduate of Harvard University with a degree in mechanical engineering, Egyptian Ali Farag has quickly transitioned from emerging talent to, arguably, the hottest player on the PSA World Tour. While the tall, angular star has had a PSA ranking since 2005 as a young teenage talent, his stats show that once fully committed to the pro tour, Farag made gigantic leaps; ending the past years successively at No. 88, No. 22, No. 7, No. 3, No. 2 and now a very solid no. 2 behind Mohamed Elshorbagy. As of January 2019, El Shorbagy’s total world ranking points are 16,935, while Farag’s are a mere 175 points away at

16,760. World No. 3 Simon Roesner has 12,760 total points. Farag notched a major victory in 2018 at the long running PSA Platinum Qatar Classic, but it is his consistency that stands out. In the past fourteen high level World Tour tournaments, he has failed to reach, at the least, the semifinals just once and that was an intense 3-1 loss at the British Open to eventual 2018 champion Miguel Rodriguez of Colombia. A nimble and graceful player, Farag moves with the type of ease last seen in the great Jansher Khan, while he possesses a quiet aggressive streak that fuels a deep inner fire to become the sport’s No. 1.

He tasted major success as Champion of the 2017 U.S. Open last season, a feat made doubly sweet when his newly married wife and PSA women’s superstar Nour El Tayeb won the Women’s division of the same tournament, giving the pair true distinction as the first-ever married couple to claim the title of the same major pro event in the same year. As a sign of his respect amongst his peers, the 27-year-old was voted in and serves as the current Player President of the PSA.

Nour El Sherbini has enjoyed a meteoric squash career and, at only 23 years of age, has the potential to be a record-breaker on the world stage. The Egyptian prodigy became the youngest ever World Junior Champion in 2009 when she claimed the title at just 13-years-old. She became the youngest ever PSA World Tour finalist in June of that year as she finished runner-up at the Miro Classic. She broke into the world’s top fifty at just 14 years of age and claimed her first Tour title at the Heliopolis Open in 2010. 2016 was arguably El Sherbini’s

major breakthrough year, with a maiden World Series Platinum title coming in January’s J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions. Then El Sherbini became the first female Egyptian to lift the iconic British Open crown just two months later. Even greater things were to come though from Alexandria-born El Sherbini as, in April, she became the youngest World Champion of all time, becoming the first Egyptian to win the pinnacle tournament on the Women’s Tour in the process. The Egyptian went on to lift her second PSA Women’s World Championship title later in 2016 at the age of just 21, defeating countrywoman Raneen El Welily in the final on home soil at El Gouna. 2018 saw her cede the World No. 1 ranking back to El Welily, but ”The Warrior Princess” won the British Open again and took the season ending honors at the ATCO World Tour Finals in Dubai to keep her as the current No. 2.

Simon Rösner is the most successful German player ever and made history in January by becoming the first German player ever to win a World Series title (now World Tour Platinum) when he triumphed at the 2018 J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions in New York. The victory was the biggest of the friendly giant’s career and has augured in a new level of PSA World Tour success. While he enjoyed a series of solid Quarterfinal results through the first half of 2018, Rösner notched two

successive Runner Up finishes in the Fall at the US Open (nearly toppling El Shorbagy in the final) and Qatar Classic (a 3-0 loss to a streaking Farag). The friendly ‘Tree-Chopper’ utilizes ferocious and consistent hitting power to dominate the center of the court but has added a new found subtlety to his play that has allowed him to become Europe’s number one player and reach a PSA World Tour career high of No. 3.

Rösner has been a regular No. 1 player for his home club of Paderborn in the German league and then annually in the European Club Championships, which Paderborn has won eight times with Rösner at the front of the roster. He won the Gold Medal at the 2017 World Games in Wroclaw, Poland. Newly married and soon to be a father, the gregarious Wurzburg-born squash star is a wonderful addition to any tournament, both on court and off.

With a degree in Electronic Engineering, Tarek Momen is one of the most intelligent players on Tour and has risen to a career-best World No. 4. While not yet the owner of a PSA Platinum title, Momen rarely loses before Quarterfinal stage. In fact, one characteristic of life on Tour for players in the top eight, is that in a season they may only ever play each other in the final stages so if one or two other players are hot, a solid player like Momen may always end up a hurdle or two away from the trophy. However, Momen may have broken that cycle by winning the $106,000 24-player PSA

Gold tournament called the Channel VAS at St. George’s Hill in October of 2018. The draw featured a host of top drawer players including No. 1 Mohamed Elshorbagy, former world No. 1 Karim Abdel Gawad and No. 2 Ali Farag, who Momen overcame in the final in a grueling 87 minutes 8-11, 11-8, 7-11, 11-5, 11-9. Together with runs to the finals of both the Qatar Classic and Tournament of Champions last season, these results hint that he may be on the verge of finding the kind of consistency needed to win a major title. Another positive

influence on his game may come from his recent marriage to World No. 1 Raneem Elwelily, one of the best shotmakers and most charming players on the women’s side of the PSA World Tour. Known as ‘The Viper’, Momen is blessed with explosive movement while his subtle skills and delicate touch stand him out as one of the most lethal players around when going short. Cognoscenti will say his unique striking of the ball and canny court sense rank him near the top of unique players on Tour.

Joelle King was making a slow, steady and talent-expected comeback from a serious Achilles injury in 2014, lately reaching later rounds and moving back in to the top eight in the world rankings, until she unleashed her full potential at the 2018 Hong Kong Open, one of the world’s premier events, and won it. She didn’t just win it, she crushed it. The tall, affable Kiwi beat world stars Raneem

El Welily, Sarah Jane Perry and Nour El Tayeb 3-0 in the last three rounds. One of the most relaxed characters on the Women’s Tour, King’s lengthy journey back to full fitness appeared complete last season when she won two Gold medals at the Commonwealth Games and reached her first major tournament final at the 2018 Windy City Open. Ranked No. 4 back in 2014, the Hong

Kong result propels her back to that lofty position and a real threat once again to the Egyptian dominance at the top of the PSA World rankings. The 30-year-old relocated from New Zealand to England to work with new coach Hadrian Stiff and the results have paid off. Joelle married Ryan Shuttle in 2012 and enjoys interior design and time with her family and her dogs.

SQUASH PRIMER FRONT WALL

Hitting the ball on, or above, the line is “out”– as is the ceiling. SERVICE LINE

Serves must be above this line – hitting on, or below, the line is “down.” THE TIN

is 17” high from the floor on the front wall – all shots must be above the tin. BACK WALL

The “out” line is seven feet high. SERVICE LINES

define the two “service areas” – when serving, the ball must go into the opposite service area. SERVICE BOX

The player must have at least one foot in the service box when serving. ATTACKING SHOTS

are usually hit to the front corners of the court. KEEPING THE BALL TIGHT TO THE SIDE WALL

usually forces an opponent to hit a defensive shot and may produce a “loose” ball which creates an opportunity for a player to hit an attacking shot. CONTROL THE “T”

to be in the best position to “get” balls on either side of the court and to hit attacking shots on balls hit away from the side walls. KEEP THE BALL DEEP

to force opponents to hit defensive shots and create opportunities to hit attacking shots to the front court.

RULES OF THE GAME • We use a two-official system. The Center Referee calls the score and keeps the official written record of the points and match time. The Center Referee’s voice is the one you hear during the match. The other referee is the Video Referee who reviews video footage of the relevant play upon appeal by a player of the Center Referee’s call. • The matches are best of five games (i.e., first player to win three games). The first player to score 11 points wins the game, unless the score is tied at 10-all – in which case, play continues until one of the players earns a two point lead to win the game. • A player serves until he or she loses a point. The receiver then becomes the server and has the choice of side from which to begin serving – then alternates sides for each subsequent serve until losing a point. A player gets only one serve on each point – a service fault is a lost point. • After hitting the ball, the player MUST make his or her best effort to get out of the opponent’s way. • On each shot the ball can hit any number of walls, but MUST hit the front wall once, MUST stay within the court boundaries (marked near the top of the walls) and MUST NOT hit the tin. The ball can bounce ONLY ONCE on the floor.

• A Let is awarded when the opponent is in the way of a player’s path to the ball. It means the point will be played over again. • A Stroke is awarded to a player who had a winning opportunity but was prevented by the opponent from playing the shot. • The Referees will rule No Let if they think the player could not have gotten to the ball before it bounced twice. • A player may appeal a ruling. The Video Referee makes the final decision. THE SQUASH RACQUET • The squash racquet is the same length as the average tennis racquet, but weighs just a little more than a badminton racquet. THE SQUASH BALL • The squash ball is soft and it bounces far less than a tennis ball.
