Normal office screen panels have no acoustic value at or below 1200mm in height . Furniture panels need to absorb ambient sound and block transmission between workstations . There are a variety of methods used in the construction of these panels to achieve the correct noise reduction coefficient ( NRC) of at least .75 .

Acoustical privacy :
Carpeting was not seen as effective as a sound absorbing material in terms of acoustics . The reason being that the frequencies absorbed are higher than the range of human speech .
Now there are a wide range of acoustical carpets availableto meet the ever demanding challenges of modern environments .
The attenuation of sound between neighbouring workstations in an open plan office is typically much less than that potentially available beween closed plan offices . Nevertheless , a degree of acoustical privacy can be achieved if component selection and interaction are understood . A successful open plan office is the result of careful co ordination of several components , some of which areceiling , wall treatments , furniture and furnishings and flooring .
CEILINGS :
The ceiling is the primary acoustical treatment in any office . Its acoustic function is to absorb sounds and reduce the reflection of sounds back down into office space . This helps reduce the distance over which noises and conversations can be heard .
In order of acoustic performance , from best to worst , ceiling types usually rank as follows ; fibreglass tile , mineral tile , perforated metal tile , no ceiling , solid metal tile , and drywall . Generally there is a significant decline in acoustic performance with any of the last four ceiling types .
There are mineral and perforated metal products available which demonstrate better than average NRC ratings .
Since the ceiling is the key acoustic element in the office , failure to use a ceiling tile will have a dramatic impact on the effectiveness of the space . Also any break in the ceiling tile will result in poor acoustic control .
FURNITURE AND PANELS :
The height of partitions is acoustically significant . Offices with partitions below a height of 1250mm provide essentially the same acoustic benefits as those with no partitions systems . (from one workstation to another ) .
Partition heights above 1750mm offer decreasing acoustic benefits relative to their costs . The absorbtion of partition systems is measured according to the Sound Transmission Criteria ( STC ) .
It is important to minimize the number and size of reflective surfaces . Glass , metal and drywall components will increase the reflection of noise and conversation and cause them to be heard over a greater distance .
Minimize openings between , under and around furniture and panels to minimize sound paths .
LIGHTING :
Acoustically lighting will increase the reflectivity of the ceiling . There a number of lighting strategies which can provide excellent lighting whislt maintaining proper acoustics .
PHYSICAL ACOUSTIC BARRIERS .
Physical acoustic barriers include plenum barriers , permanent walls , absorptive materials above the ceiling tiles , and doors .
