FUll 360 BRAND REFRESH rare. Kent, UK
rare. Conservation Centre in Kent, UK specialises in managing declining species and breeding programmes in the UK and pilot breeding programmes around the world for the most endangered species on the CITES list.
They keep some of the rarest and most exotic species in extreme peril of extinction. The centre was going through a 4 million pound refurbishment building enclosures for the first Malayan Tigers ever to be kept in the UK.
lOCATiON:
I was approached by the owner, Todd Dalton and asked to help them redevelop their brand which had grown tired after their launch more than 15 years ago. The job included packaging for products they produced and sold, uniforms, stationery and a wayfinding system. When discussing the centre, the owner mentioned that they are well know for the Tarsiers they keep (much like our Bush Babies). The demographics for attendees is slanted towards young children and the Tarsier is a firm favourite.
I then suggested we create a Tarsier mascot to include in their logo. Elements for the re-brand included a full spectrum Ci, including a document outlining the centre’s ethos and DNA for staff and investors. I also created a rare. font, stationery, a Wayfinding system for the park, staff uniforms, digital social media banners, leaflets, packaging, signage, advertising placement in traditional media, and cafe’ menus and a gift catalogue.

One of the top SFX sculptors in Cape Town launched a makeup blood range and they approached me to create a brand and labelling for it.
Amazing Set/prop blood and Bloody Tasty, Mouth blood. So the challenge is trying to create enough variation between the dierent products whilst still ensuring that the mother brand is the hero.
Having a very speciďŹ c brief as to what they were looking for, meant that even though I advised them to go with something more iconographic, The labelling shown is work in progress as the client is they were set on how their brand currently making changes. should look which was the version I created below. They have 3 blood ranges, Bloody Fabulous Makeup blood, Bloody

Now in it’s tenth year, the Oyster, Wine & Food Festival is the second largest Oyster festival in the country. Securing a place at Montecasino, and moving their event from Brightwater Common, I was asked to refresh not only their creative, but relook the brand as the feeling was that the brand was very reminiscent of Jon Dory or Ocean Basket. Elements included: Billboards, Supalites, Posters, Witkoppen & Attebury Billboards & traditional print media.

PHASE 2
PHASE 2 The campaign was to drive sign-ups for the Montecasino Reward programme. Elements included a 70m multi-story parking billboard, outdoor billboards at Malibongwe, Witkoppen, posters, light boxes and advertising placement in traditional media. Within the first month of flighting the campaign growth in sign-ups for April 2014 vs April 2015 with no other contributing factors was up by 189%.

Tsogo Sun
Tsogo Sun’s units are high paced pressurised retail environments, with a large marketing effort spent focused on their core business which are their casino floors. Creating promotions for this industry is challenging as

gambling regulations in South Africa are complex and require experience and understanding. Tsogo Sun’s brand guidelines are strict and quite specific (as most large brands are). Mostly reliant on the group’s agency (Diesel Brooke) to develop and create their promotion concepts and creative, I was asked outside of that relationship to developing a few of their Black Card holder’s promotions (this group of Tsogo Sun clients account for 70% of the groups total earnings). Most of these promos required me turning the artwork around from concept to finished art within a couple days.

I think more importantly, I wanted to find new ways of telling a brand/s stories through imagery. Most media channels are saturated with more of the same and this had led to audience fatigue. People are inundated with visual and audio stimuli. It’s very difficult for brands, especially small ones to rise up out of that noise. There are smaller brands which are innovating and need exposure the most. I think, even for larger brands to remain relevant, they need to challenge the way in which they tell their stories. This was my central thought behind jewellery led shoots such as this for Gaschette and aff Magazine.

Forming a small stills studio that focused on producing Jewellery editorials, I shot a Noir story for a fashion friend Magazine here in Cape Town. Using a strong young face from BOSS Models, we shot this story, transitioning the lights from bright to near dark at the end of the shoot. The jewellery was all locally sourced from designers in Cape Town. I did the mock-up below for the editor Raya and publisher Robyn Khan and they loved the treatment enough to publish the story as is.

During my time at a small boutique agency up in Johannesburg, we were approached by AVIS to do an in-car travel magazine placed in their rentals when collected by their clients. I designed the masthead, using elements from their own Ci to create that golden thread to connect the brand to the book yet also give the magazine it’s own identity. After carefully working out costings AVIS, at that time, realised that it might not be a viable proposition.

Dossier Magazine, a 200 page publication features travel, fashion and photography. I was asked to be the guest AD/CD. After perusing each of the previous publications and conversations with the publisher, it was clear they wanted to position the book a little better, closer to the way Vogue looks. Each of their previous books had a new style and vernacular and there didn’t seem to be design consistency nor a strong style guide. I was also asked to produce and direct shoots for the publication where I worked closely with their Fashion Director on spreads for clients such as Charles Grieg. This included advertisers for VISA, British Airways and NIKE.
