HELLO DEAR READER! I hope this finds you and your loved ones in good health. I’m sure I’m not the only one noticing time passing by a lot quicker. It’s already February! Normally, we would be readying ourselves for Mardi Gras, which for obvious reasons will not happen this year. But, since we are creative and resilient here in New Orleans, Megan Boudreaux came up with Krewe of House Floats. Thanks to her ingenious idea, even people in Australia are in on the idea. Visit kreweofhousefloats.org for more info. Meanwhile, here in Nola residents are going above and beyond decorating their porches or facades this year. Each neighborhood has a Krewe and a theme. And the results are amazing! This gave way to the term Yardi Gras! Also, there's "Floats in the Oaks," a drive-through at City Park to view 40+ floats, light installations, and more. It's a fundraiser for our beloved park and tickets are limited. The event runs February 4-14. Find a link on page 9. It's amazing how we come together in times of adversity. New Orleanians know how to pivot! Quite frankly, I feel both Yardi Gras and Floats in the Oaks will become a tradition. I hope so. It’ll add to the fun. Anyway, I wish you a happy and safe Yardi Gras, and I hope you remain positive, whilst negative (Covid-wise). Till next issue, Regina Correa

3 Window Treatment Styles That Are Timeless
W
indow treatments are an essential part of the finished look of a room. They add drama, frame the view, add color, texture, dimension, provide privacy, and at times they even add insulation. A carefully created window treatment will transform and enrich the ambiance of any room. Window treatments can vary greatly depending on the look and feel you are after. At times, the room will dictate what would work best. Although there are a few instances where a window does not need any treatment, most of them do. A window that is well dressed in layers that add to the function and character of the space is simply beautiful. Window treatments, aka window coverings, are divided into two categories: hard treatment and soft treatment. Hard window treatments are those made with hard materials such as wood, vinyl, or metal: shutters, blinds, shades, and cornices; whereas, soft window treatments are those made with a soft material or textiles such as cotton, linen, silk, polyester, nylon, etc... In this article, I will focus on soft treatments since they are the most common, timeless, and more impactful in the overall look of a room. In the realm of interiors, there are a plethora of soft window treatments. The three most commonly used are drapery panels, curtains, and soft shades. These three types are classic, therefore always in style. In general, drapery panels and shades are formal, and curtains informal. Drapery panels are usually hung in living rooms, dining rooms, libraries, home offices, and bedrooms. That does not mean you could not hang a soft shade or curtains in any of these rooms. At times a combination of both creates the perfect look; it all depends on the look you’re after. Unlike soft shades, drapery panels have a variety of pleats that transform the feel and look of it. The most

commonly used are pinch pleat, french pleat, inverted or reverse pleat, flat top, tab top, and grommet top; each style will give a specific look to the room where they are installed. Panels are usually lined and at times interlined for better hanging, to protect the fabric from sun damage, and to create light filtering effects. They are always floor-length, mostly hung on a metal, wood, or acrylic rod above the window trim, however, there are exceptions. Curtains differ from drapery panels in that they are informal and made with much lighter fabric: usually sheers with no lining. They can be seen in kitchens, sunrooms, breakfast nooks, etc... They are available in different lengths and are also hung on metal, wood, or acrylic rod above the window trim and at times, halfway down the window for privacy or a french look. Soft shades come in a wide variety: roman, london, balloon, cloud, etc...and are commonly seen in kitchens, bathrooms, studies, laundry rooms, and powder rooms. The roman shade is the most popular and comes in different types: flat, relaxed, ripple fold, and tulip. It hangs mounted either inside or outside of the window frame. At times they are installed underneath drapery panels or curtains for a layered, more polished look. One key component in making a decision about your space and your taste in window treatments, ceiling height, is a major factor when deciding which treatment is best. Some window layouts defy traditional approaches and in those special situations, contact your favorite designer to show you the path to the best solution for an amazing result. Drapery panels, curtains, and soft shades are the window coverings that are always in style. In my 15 years as a designer, I’m yet to see anything else that will outdo these three types. Even those who opt for a hard window covering end up adding a soft treatment layer as it adds beauty, color, and grace to the room. It softens up the hard edges thus enhancing the overall look.

Brazil is worldly known for its Carnival. However, Rio's stands out for its luxury and grandeur. I am highlighting it here so that you can get a glimpse of it, and hopefully, you can visit one day, if you haven’t been. I can say it's an experience like no other. Much different than our Nola Mardi Gras, the parades in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are actually a competition. Everything starts with a song that is created around a specific theme and everything else revolves around such theme: floats, costumes, how well the story is told, how happy and organized the parade is, etc...Every single aspect of the parade is judged by a "grand jury" (there are about 9 categories with 5 judges each). In the end, the one with the highest points wins the competition. I hope you enjoy it!
We know how to pivot in times of adversity. Since Mardi Gras has been canceled due to the pandemic, people came up with solutions to the problem. Besides Floats in the Oaks, happening at City Park from Feb 4-14, Yardi Gras and Mardi Gras House Floats have been taking over the city.
