JANUARY ‘22
From the Editor
hello dear reader! I hope this finds you and your loved ones doing well. Happy New Year!!!! It’s the beginning of another year and like many, I hope it will be a year of great accomplishments. As Stephen Covey said, begin with the end in mind. A New Year is the chance to continue on what has been working or it is the perfect opportunity to start fresh, anew! Is there something you've been meaning to tackle, start, or give it a try? I recently came across a quote that says, "It always seems impossible, until it's done." A great reminder that all things are possible. Go for it! You might be pleasantly surprised at the end. As we reset the buttons on our lives, let's be more purposeful, kinder, and "make time" to smell the flowers. It is part of our evolutionary process. Cheers to an amazing New Year ahead!
Till next issue,
Regina Correa

6 Benefits of an Interior Design Consultation
M
ost interior designers begin with an interior design consultation, and I am no exception. In general, a consultation allows the interior designer to share and collect essential information that in the end will help you save time, money, and mistakes. In my practice, a consultation - which lasts up to two hours - is either a meeting to diagnose and understand the scope of the project or to advise/address existing matters (architectural or decorative issues) in your home or office. Either one is packed full of information, very productive, and a worthy investment. Let me further illustrate how a consultation will eliminate stress and give you peace of mind. 1. It saves you time Time and again I get called in by clients who are frustrated and lost because they have gone back and forth trying to solve a design dilemma: e.g.: select the perfect paint color, figure out a furniture layout, choose the right countertop, etc... These issues can be easily solved during a consultation. You won’t waste all your time trying to get it right and within those two hours you’ll get guidance, your questions answered, and your project is moving forward again. 2. It keeps you from making mistakes Another reason clients reach out to me is because they are overwhelmed and tired of trying to get it right. It never fails: it is either too short, too long, too tall, too small, doesn’t fit, not the right tone, the style doesn’t match the rest, etc... The number one issue I

see in clients’ homes is related to scale: the rug, the sofa, the chair, the table, the art, etc... are either too big or too small for the space. A past client - who had her home damaged by Hurricane Ida - had to move to a new place. She ordered a new sectional before she moved and when she arrived, she realized the sofa she ordered wouldn’t fit and there wasn’t enough room for her dining table and chairs. By the time she reached out to me, there wasn’t much I could do. I emailed her a few possible solutions I hope will work out. Defining appropriate sizes and layout can be easily done during a consultation. 3. It saves you money Saving time and mistakes, are two perfect examples that will automatically save you money. Time is money and you will spend more money fixing mistakes. Another perfect example of saving time, money and mistakes is when a client called me to help her select the right shade of paint for her dining room. She had recently (on her own) updated the rug, had the dining chair seats reupholstered, and wanted to update the wall color to reflect the changes in the room. She still wanted a neutral tone for the walls, but she couldn’t get a shade that she felt went well with the new color scheme. She went back and forth about selecting the color, hired someone to paint the room (twice) and still wasn’t thrilled with the result. In the end, she spent way more time and money than she would have had she consulted with a designer before attempting to do it on her own. 4. It brings you an expert, trained eye Dealing with design daily allows designers to easily
spot what is wrong, missing, or not working well in a space. A case in point is an appointment for a couple who wanted to go over their plans to update and add a few rooms to their house. Besides pointing out a few architectural features that were left off the new home plans, I was able to help them solve an issue with a missing architectural element where the new kitchen pantry would be and another in the laundry room. 5. It brings fresh ideas and inspiration Often, I share ideas and inspiration with clients, and I hear “I would have never thought of this.” Because designers are continuously in the trenches, we have ideas and solutions that will solve most issues. If for some reason I don’t have an answer during the consultation, I will find it for you. 6. It provides lasting results Consider that the opinion of a professional will allow you to make decisions that are not only appropriate for your space and lifestyle but will last for years to come. A professional will always lead you in the right direction and their advice will be beneficial for you and the space. As you plan for the year ahead, I hope that living well and loving where you live is a top priority. Whether you or someone you know, are stuck from decorating one room to building a new house - get the help of an expert. Consulting with a designer to help you get it right the first time is a small price you would pay versus the examples I have shared with you here. It will save you time, money, and mistakes. It’s a wise investment in

your sanity and the end result. Before getting caught in a similar situation (these are just some of many) don't hesitate to reach out, I’d love to assist you.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your background. How/why did you become an artist?
I was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. My father is an architect and my mother is a music teacher so I grew up with plenty of creative influence at an early age. When I was young I spent a lot of time in the mountains and was interested in wildlife so my art at that age reflected that. I attended Utah State University and initially studied to be a Wildlife Biologist, but I was always making art and eventually switched to an art degree emphasizing in illustration. My wife, Dr. Lina Moses, and I (we are now separated) met at Utah State University. After graduating we moved to Portland, Oregon, then in 2002 she accepted a job with the New York State Department of Health and we moved to Albany, New York. In 2004 Lina applied and was accepted into the Tulane School of Public Health graduate program, which brought us to New Orleans. 11 | Riche Home and Lifestyle
What is your philosophy/ what moves you to create your art? Where do you get inspiration? When we came to Louisiana I was mainly creating abstract work. We moved here in August of 2004 and a year later Katrina hit. It was a time of reflection about economic disparities, people left behind, and equity. That along with the unique traditions and culture of New Orleans nudged me to make large portrait paintings, often highlighting the “overlooked” and under served. The shift to large portraits and representation inspired new painting techniques and style changes, while retaining some of the abstract qualities from my earlier work. What has followed has been an exploration of large landscape paintings,

In your opinion, why is art important?
I have been accepted into the Ogden Museum’s annual “Louisiana Contemporary” exhibit four years in a row and have donated and participated in the live auction for their annual “Oh What a Night” fundraiser gala every year since 2017. I consistently contribute to the mission of the Link 12 | Riche Home and Lifestyle

Stryjewski Foundation helping New Orleans youth by donating paintings to their annual Bal Masque fundraiser, and I have two large scale paintings of Allen Toussaint and Tootie Montana on permanent display at Cochon restaurant. I’ve worked with Christy Wood and Jordan Blanton at LeMieux Galleries for almost ten years participating in thoughtfully curated group exhibitionsand fundraisers, and through donated artwork I’ve raised money for several charities and institutions including Ebola Survivor Corp, Cafe Reconcile, ALAS, Grace at the Greenlight, and NOCCA. I believe art can empower the hearts of people to influence our culture, politics and even the economy. I’m proud to call myself a New Orleanian and regularly enjoy the live music, the food, the St. Claude and Julia street art openings, the unique traditions and culture in our
