From the Editor

hello dear reader! I hope this finds you and your loved ones doing well. Summer is here, and most people look forward to this time of the year. Well, for New Orleanians not so much! Summer for us means sweltering heat and one hundred percent humidity just about every day. Someone once told me "it sucks the life outta you" - I couldn't have said it better myself. Quite frankly I don't know how we do it every. single. year! It must be the food they serve in these neck of the woods. It sure is delicious! For many of us, summer is the perfect opportunity to travel and explore to get away from the unbearable heat. I have a couple of short trips planned and am very much looking forward to that. There is a chance I will get to go to Brazil and visit family since it's been three years since I've seen my mommy. I am glad I have a few options. How about you? What are your plans for the summer? Whatever you decide, I hope you get to go somewhere fun, make new friends and enjoy life! Till next issue, Regina Correa

Understanding the Interior Design Creative Process

R

Recently I was asked why I am an interior designer. The answer was plain and simple; I love creating beautiful, interesting interiors based on the wants and needs of my clients. People are different with unique desires, challenges, issues, and dreams. Addressing their requests allows me to be creative, and creativity is the spark that keeps me alive. Interior Design is a fulfilling calling with processes that in the end are rewarding for both myself and my clients. Interior Designers play the important role in making your living not only modern and stylish but one that is filled with functionality and comfort.

Concept follows planning, which is where the vision, the aesthetics for the space start taking shape. Usually, a set of ideas and considerations are gathered with the client’s needs and desires, allowing for the vision to develop. There is a lot of deliberation and reflection in this process. Selections of Materials and Finishes follows Concept with the actual curation of all furnishings, color scheme, textiles, and finishes that make up the entire space. Such selections will combine and consider the client’s wants and needs incorporating them into creative, aesthetically pleasing solutions.

When a designer sets out to curate a space for a client, there are many aspects of the design process taken into consideration. They are the principles and elements (balance, harmony, proportion, scale) that when combined become essential aspects that allow for a space to be designed with intention and purpose.

Finally, the Presentation wraps up the creative process. In this stage, the sum of every element selected is wrapped into creative solutions and then presented to the client with real samples of fabrics, metals, finishes, woods, textures, etcetera, and most likely a three-dimensional rendering of how the space would look. This step helps the client visualize and have a clear understanding of how the results will look and feel.

The first step in the creative process is Space Planning. In this step, the goal is to plan an efficient and functional space that will be beneficial to the client’s everyday living. Here, form and function act as the essential foundation for creating the space. Understanding how the space is used is crucial to this initial step as it will affect every decision moving forward.

The end of the creative process means the beginning of the procurement and purchasing process that will lead to receiving and managing all goods through to installation into the client’s home. This is when the client has a space curated to their specific wants and needs for them to enjoy and create memorable moments with family and friends.

Interior Décor Tip Hanging Art Wrongly hung art is a very common mistake seen in homes. Use these tips to get you started.

Hang a single artwork at eye level - about 58 inches. Art above a piece of furniture should be hung at 4-6 inches and at about 2/3 the width of such furnishing. When hanging two or more pieces treat them as one, spaced evenly apart.

Something Old

A piece of antique is the perfect addition to most interiors. They don't necessarily need to fit in with any style but rather become that special piece that reminds us of the glamour of a bygone era. These would look great in a foyer for the perfect first impression. Pair them with contemporary pieces for an ideal juxtaposition.

Design Note Exotic stones seem to be having a revival. Thse would be best used as accents on backsplashes, shower surrounds, behind a freestanding bathroom tub or cladding a fireplace.

Days End

What do you love the most about creating art in New Orleans? What Bayou Blues particular part of your immediate environment, in your neighborhood specifically influences your work? I love New Orleans architecture. The colors and shapes of the old and new.

Where do you draw inspiration? Everywhere around me. Who are your artistic influences or gurus? A few of my creative influences are Helen Frankenthaler, Georgia O'keefe, William de Kooning, Bob Dylan and Frida Kahlo. In New Orleans, art and music go hand in hand. What type of music, band or song lyric best describes your work? Lately, I'm listening to Baliwood or classic sitar while I paint. This changes with my mood. Where can we find you when you are not creating art? With my family. We spend most of our time cooking together and we love walking though the swampy forest at Jean Lafitte Park.

Spring in Bloom

What is your favorite time of day/day of the week/month of the year? I love Summertime. With the kids home we have freedom to explore together. 11 | Riche Home and Lifestyle

TO TRAVEL IS TO LIVE Many times we have wonderful things right in our backyard that we are not even aware of. We tend to explore what is out there - traveling within the country and abroad - and forget to appreciate what we've got where we live. I enjoyed reading the recommendations from @cntraveller for the 20 Best Things to Do in New Orleans. I know most of you live here, but seriously, have you done every single thing they are recommending? Read on to find out. Image by: Canva
