From the Editor
HELLO DEAR READER! I hope this finds you and your loved ones safe and in good health in the aftermath of hurricane Ida. I, along with so many others, have had damages during the storm. Although my place wasn't anywhere nearly as damaged as so many, I feel blessed for the outpouring of love and support received from friends near and far. It feels great to know you have genuine friends in times like these. My place will be out of commission for a while, but I'm grateful I have a safe and welcoming place to stay for the time being. If you are displaced, I hope you do, too. Let's pray this is it for this season. Till next issue,
Regina Correa

Rebuilding Your Home After a Hurricane
G
oing through a hurricane comes with mixed emotions. Losing beloved things that were near and dear to us is heartbreaking. Many in the Louisiana Coastal region have begun recovering from Hurricane Ida. There are a few things that should be kept in mind as rebuilding begins.
Perhaps the silver lining of this dark cloud is that now there is the ability to start fresh. To add or redo that one room, or maybe the entire house exactly how you’ve always wanted it. I have received a few calls from prospective clients eager to do just that. With the pandemic still looming over us, if they hadn’t been able to do anything before, they are certainly ready to do it now. Before you start, take some time to do your research and make a list of the things you find will be beneficial to you and your home. Make a list of what you’d like to accomplish and why; having your why front and center will help you make decisions quicker. If you have been affected and are planning to rebuild, there are many factors to consider. Here are a few of them. The Contractor As your main person, choosing your contractor carefully is the number one piece of advice you must follow. He or she should be the guiding light throughout your renovation. Contractors are knowledgeable and resourceful in the area you need the most help - getting your home back to normal. A great contractor will select the right products, present you with the best materials and be aware of the latest on weather and wind-resistant ones. Verify if your contractor(s) is licensed, insured, and in good standing with the State. Take the time to carefully review your contract documents. A contract with no legal entity is a huge red flag. You should also ask for references and then verify them; Image by: Canva it could mean an enormous difference in your rebuilding experience.
Check Your Investment It is normal to want to do more than what has been damaged during a hurricane. If you haven’t done any repairs or renovation recently, you will quickly discover your money might not get as far as you’d like. Check your disposable spending level before you start and set a budget to spend. Keep in mind that the insurance company might not give 3 | Riche Home and Lifestyle
you as much money as you think they should. Prioritize Since you might not have as much as you’d like to invest, revisit the list you created when you started then prioritize what is most important to getting your home up and running. Maybe the pool you’ve always wanted will have to wait a little longer. Make Smart Choices Resistant materials is a keyword while rebuilding. When it comes to rebuilding after a hurricane, you’ll want to have a resilient rebuilding perspective and make intentional choices. This might be a bit technical, but the idea is to rebuild structures that are more resilient to increase durability, long-term efficiency, and maximum protection. Find out what structural upgrades you can afford to improve the resilience of your home (ex- raising your house). Also, keep the following tolerant materials in mind: concrete is ideal for framing, flooring, and walls; vinyl is perfect for siding and trims; metal is great for roofing and stone is very durable and if sealed properly should not have to be torn out should you have to deal with water issues again. From an aesthetic standpoint, I know many prefer certain materials that may not be ideal for hurricane-prone areas. A good example is a wood or laminate flooring. Although they enhance the look and feel of a home, having them in an area prone to flooding or hurricanes might come with challenges. It might be effective to opt for a substitute. One material that I can recommend is wood-like porcelain tile. Porcelain is denser and a lot more durable and its quality and look are spectacular. I visited a home that had flooded and the flooring - wood-like porcelain - was intact. Image: TileBar
Lastly, a high-priority item is to check on what can be done to strengthen your roof. Figuring out the best and most efficient way to reinforce your roof is paramount. A lot of damage could have been avoided if the roofs had withstood the high winds of Hurricane Ida. This chevron design on wood-like porcelain tile flooring adds warmth to this space.
There are plenty of other materials to consider. Chances are they will make rebuilding costly, but in the long run, making the investment will be worth every penny. 4 | Riche Home and Lifestyle

Local Art JESSICA STRAHAN
Painter and Muralist
Jessica Strahan (b. 1980) is a painter and muralist native to and based in New Orleans, Louisiana. Self-taught, she creates portraits that amplify the African influence on New Orleans culture, from the city’s neighborhood cultural practices to its shot-gun architecture and culinary traditions to the facial features and hair stylings of its residents. Her paintings play in the parallels and dissonance between the past and the present to create windows into imagined futures. They investigate the meaning of home for a people who carry both the ancestral memory and lived experience of mass displacement – due to enslavement and Hurricane Katrina.

To Travel is a Gift
The Northwest is amazing! Late August, I was fortunate to join my friend Myra Corrello, who was set to drive through part of the Northwest on her way back to Kentucky. We started in Portland, Oregon and eight days later I was dropped off in Rapid City, S.Dakota. Myra selected beautiful scenic routes with waterfalls, cascades, rivers, dams, amazing rock formations, wildlife, charming small towns, and stunning scenes all along. Driving through the plains, we found beauty in hay pilings, fence designs, barns -old and new, silos, old trucks, cows, goats, and horses grazing. We got to camp in Yellowstone National Park the night sky was breathtaking. I was in awe of its size and the many sights the park offers. It is truly a national treasure! On our arrival, we saw a Bison on the road and saw herds afterward. Chipmunks are the cutest, tiniest, and quickest creatures ever, and Mr. Moose never showed up. I will definitely go back and spend a few days exploring that amazing park. What an adventure! These are just a few of the hundreds of photos I took.
