Proposal and revision of the social housing scheme in a case study in Barranquilla, Colombia.
AWARD
Earned the Tau Sigma Delta Bronze Medal Award and the Design Excellence Award.
What The context of this thesis is based the recognition that, Latin American cities have been victims of their own success, growing in an unplanned and disorderly manner. By 2030, an estimated 5 billion people will live in cities, and about 2 billion of them will live in self-made dwellings. Today cities in South America are in crisis and are no longer growing like they used to, and are shaped by the dichotomy of the formal urbanization and the informal uncontrolled sprawl.
How Arguably this holistic approach makes the possibility of interventions particularly complex: How does design adapt the positive qualities of the growth of informal urbanisms? Can the landscape act as the mediator, thus becoming socially inclusive and sensitive to the environment? Can the result be the catalyst to in-formalize the formal?
Where Barranquilla is a city and municipality located in northern Atlรกntico Department of Colombia. Considered the largest city and port in the northern Caribbean Coast region, with a metropolitan population of 1,885,000 as of 2011.
This thesis therefore investigates the means by which architecture, landscape and urban infrastructure can act as an incremental network to create new corners of growth in the periphery of Barranquilla. This way there is a new urban model that integrates the landscape to the city, and the ecology to the urban by converging growing communities and underutilized landscapes under one incremental framework.
Why Barranquilla is considered one the top growing cities of the region, therefore it works as a laboratory to replace the exhausted growth paradigm with a more equitable one. With this comes the most important challenge to act preemptively to the future expansion of the city, and most importantly to revisit the social housing approach in South America.

Result
Proposal Develop a guideline for a preemptive planning of a self-constructed neighborhood that connects and weaves into the urban landscape of one emerging city in Latin America. This incremental network reorganizes the natural and built environment and implements a new incremental framework of growth.

The Besòs River is considerably reduced when it crosses the city’s south area. After extensive urban renewal and upgrading of the river’s water over the years, still today the Besòs is a barrier that divides the site into two halves, both facing away from each other. A network of interlaced paths and footbridges will transform the Besòs River into a linear park that stitches together the 2 sides of the waterfront which are currently separated, connecting them with an intertwined structural bridge that looks to repurpouse the area and generate a social bridge for the citizens of Barcelona and Badalona.

In this opportunity the design allows for architecture to as more than a connection, but a physical interpreation through a continous ramp-like spine that penetrates both buildings, and all floors. The intent was to promote headquarters to communicate collaboration, but at the same time illustrate a design representative of the search of duality.

This urban study identifies the missing and underdeveloped urban activities in the neighbourhood, traces available space within the densely built fabric, and distributes new activities within the areas potentially available for development. Rejecting the usual development of athletic facilities, this proposal generates a balanced environment that lets the user enjoy the original relationship of communal spaces in a frame of open spaces with a backdrop surrounded by movement in the site.

Landscape retreat intervention Haddam Meadows State Park, CT
This project is conceived as vehicle to connect the members of the International Cartographers Association to their surrounding landscape at Haddams State Park. The landscape intervention is aimed to encourage immediate connections to nature and outdoor patios, through the integration, development and display of their applied and field research. Specific programs and services areas are fragmented through the continuous changes in topography and spaces of the project, converting the headquarters into an interchanging facility, which weaves dif¬ferent uses and areas through the same language, while providing the user a chance to truly inhabit the landscape.

Most furniture today is made using mass production techniques and standardized designs. This modular stool explores the possibilities of multiple arrangements and configurations in one single design component that consists of a base, and three legs of support. Through this design approach the goal was to reduce costs for manufacturers, allow customization for the consumer, and respond to the emerging do-it-yourself culture and design build entrepreneurs.

This pavilion was design with a unit of 3. Three circles come together to create a three sided aggregate. This modular piece was then scaled and connected together in infite possibilities. With the intention of beign recycled and reused, the pieces were designed to creat small stools and tables after deconstruction using a combination of 3 base aggregates. These shapes are used in tandem to create ondulating pockets of space. When assembled continously, the triangular modular pieces recreate de circumference of the circles on wich they were based, creating a soft fractacl quality to the branches that define the spaces that encourage discovery, weaving and play.

The translation of data from time and movement, generates a three dimensional installation that examines the collective experience of our time spent traveling. Similarly to the hourglass, which is considered one of the main artifacts that has allowed us to keep track of time for a number of centuries, this installation is shaped by past, present and future time. The unifying element in the intervention is represented in the expression of the line as the single element that defines both space and data information throughout the piece. Unlike most other methods of measuring time, the hourglass concretely represents the present as being between the past and the future, and this has made it an enduring symbol of time itself.

This proposal addresses these problems of localized ground discontinuity and programmatic and physical isolation within a larger urban area, by proposing connected three-dimensional networks of integral mix use programs as well as recreational uses. Working to connect (existing and proposed housing units) as well as the community, the normative isolated affordable housing building type found in Boston, is replaced by a series of mid rise buildings that incline to minimize structural spans and interconnect in order to maximize the area available for housing and communal space development, effectively enhancing social integration.

Maria Aiolova, LEED AP 63 Flushing Ave, Unit 192 Brooklyn, NY 11205 Tel: (917) 921-0446 E-mail: maria@terreform.org June 30th 2015 RE: Recommendation for Employment It is my great pleasure to recommend Francesco Stumpo to your organization. I have been acquainted with Francesco for almost two years. In over fifteen years of designing and teaching, I have known only few aspirants with determination equivalent to Francesco. I was impressed by his good nature and humility, and the genuine scholarly curiosity that he exhibited over and over - a curiosity that is often accompanied by his enthusiasm for an idea, a research concept, or the primary role in a challenging intellectual position. I was first introduced to Francesco through the work he submitted in applying to the CIEE Global Architecture and Design Study Abroad Program that I direct. The admissions committee agreed that he would be a valuable asset as a student in the program. He was awarded a full scholarship to attend the semester-long program in Barcelona. During the course of Global Architecture and Design, Francesco developed a project that combined research and theory with aesthetics and function. He presented himself as a very perceptive individual with a keen design sense and a sincere interest in ecological design. As a graduate of Harvard Graduate School of Design, and having been a designer and a design professor at Parsons the New School for Design, Pratt Institute and Cornell University, I know that Francesco has what it takes to play an important role in the design and research field. As a first hand witness of his intelligence and self-motivation, as well as his ability for innovative research, design, and fabrication, I know he will be a great success at your organization. Sincerely,
Maria Aiolova, LEED AP Co-Founder, Terreform ONE 40

To whom it may concern: This letter is written as an personal reference for Francesco Stumpo, a recently graduated student of architecture from Wentworth Institute of Technology, Boston. I first met Mr. Stumpo in the Fall of 2013 during my tenure as Graduate Programs Director at Wentworth. During this time, I served as his advisor during his study abroad period in Barcelona and for his Masters Thesis study. I feel qualified to speak on Mr. Stumpo’s behalf not only for his work at Wentworth, but also for our many conversations outside of the formal academic environment. In the time that we worked together, it become quite apparent that Mr. Stumpo exhibits an unusual commitment to the discipline of architecture. He forwards a thoughtful, critical position on a wide range of matters in both theory and practice, quickly revealing to those around him a deep understanding and broad knowledge of current topics as well as historical precedents. Although having deep convictions within matters of architecture, urbanism, and beyond, he nevertheless remains open to constructive critique. Mr. Stumpo repeatedly sought the opinions of his instructors and his peers, and he turned sometimes difficult criticism into opportunities for seeing the work in a new way. He approaches his work with reflection and forethought, realizing his own strengths while working to improve perceived shortcomings. Mr. Stumpo exhibits a personal discipline and persistence well beyond his years, showing extraordinary personal initiative and resourcefulness. He was awarded a full scholarship by the faculty to study abroad in Barcelona as part of the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), where he excelled in matters of urbanism, fabrication, and criticism. He acted as a key leader in the student-run publication, Wentworth Architecture Review, overseeing its content, fundraising, and distribution. And his thesis, studying the informal urbanism of Latin America, offers a significant emerging voice in the field. In reflecting on his work as a student, architect, and global citizen, I am reminded of a quote by Le Corbusier, who wrote, "...in life it is necessary above all to act, and by that I mean, to act in a spirit of modesty, with exactitude, and precision. Mr. Stumpo promises to be leader in the discipline of architecture and a vital addition to a professional office. I recommend him without reservation.
Sincerely,
Jonathan D. Foote, Ph.D Lecturer / Cal Poly State University / San Luis Obispo
