SAI 04

Welcome to SAI Since 1995, Study Abroad Italy (SAI) has been dedicated to providing students with an exceptional cultural and educational experience abroad in Italy, and now also in London. We offer you the opportunity to enroll in the very finest schools available to English speaking students. There are NO language requirements for SAI programs; courses are taught in English, unless the courses are part of an Italian Language Program or are offered for students at advanced levels of Italian language proficiency. Students receive U.S. university credit for all courses SAI offers. The SAI framework for living and learning is based on the following: • Italy and its global significance in the humanities, and arts and culture • Italy’s position and participation in the global geopolitical economy • Italy’s prestigious role in art and design and its global impact and influence of design worldwide. We have added London, where design is considered a driver for social change and economic development. Students enrolling in SAI programs will benefit from this unique approach based on over 15 years of experience and expertise in global education. SAI programs are designed to allow students the opportunity to know Italy on a deep level; its history, culture, geography, food, art and people. Focusing on one country has allowed SAI to develop strong ties with our academic partners, resulting in a blended educational and cultural environment that stresses academic integrity, high impact learning, leadership de-

SAI 05 velopment and global awareness. This results in increased knowledge and skills for students preparing for entry into the work world, graduate schools and other professional education. Following our belief that learning at any stage in life is an enriching and rewarding experience, SAI established VIVA, an Italian based learning center in Sonoma County, California. VIVA was created to share a love of Italian food, wine, culture and heritage with the local community, students of all ages, and visitors from around the globe. Students will find that SAI programs offer most areas of study; from business to design; art history to environmental studies; studio arts to political science. SAI provides a combination of excellent academic course work, with an environment served by the cultural treasures of Italy and London, that will stimulate personal growth and create a lifetime of memories. Today’s increasing globalization places new demands on students and decision-makers, and for this reason many undergraduate programs require study abroad. It is critical for today’s student to understand the interconnection of world affairs and to experience, through living abroad, cultural difference and diversity. Educational institutions must prepare today’s student to face a world made smaller by rapid communication, shared commerce and the facility of travel from one place to another.

factors that influence globalization. Students have opportunities to select courses and participate in activities outside the classroom that may lead to a greater comprehension of global humanitarian concerns and social justice issues. By discussing issues and making friends from around the world, students begin to see themselves and their homeland from a global perspective. Study abroad students undertake an unforgettable personal journey and SAI is there every step of the way to enhance the experiences of our students.

SAI encourages students to broaden their views of the world and their understanding of their roles and responsibilities as global citizens. Through a wide range of course offerings, students may deepen their knowledge of the intersections between art, culture, history and politics; and heighten their awareness of the economic, environmental, and technological

U.S. Credits Many U.S. colleges and universities accept the host school transcript directly from SAI international colleges, universities, and institutes. For those students from other U.S. educational institutions, SAI provides a U.S. transcript through Fairfield University in Connecticut. Fairfield University serves as SAI’s primary school of record for the review of courses offered abroad. Based on this review, Fairfield University, which is regionally accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, provides a U.S. transcript. John Cabot University in Rome is regionally accredited by the Middle States Association of Higher Education and issues a U.S. transcript for all of its courses. Siena program students receive U.S. credits through Portland State University. It is the student’s responsibility to confirm that specific courses will be accepted at their home school.

Our Program Coordinators and Advisors hold daily office hours and are always available to offer assistance with personal issues that are common when studying abroad, as well as academic problems that may arise. The Student Services Program, an ongoing and reassuring presence, includes an active calendar of social events and excursions, culminating in a farewell dinner at the end of the term. SAI on-site staff regularly organizes culinary, cultural, sports and musical events, often free to SAI students. SAI encourages students to participate in these activities as another way to learn about the country and culture.

Community Engagement & Cultural Integration Integrating students into the local culture and community is an important component of SAI programs. SAI’s focus on Italy with an extension in London includes a commitment to good citizenship and involvement in the neighboring communities where we have our programs. SAI’s strong ties in the communities benefit students who are seeking active, engaged learning and service outside of the classroom. SAI works in conjunction with our partner schools in Italy and London to provide academic internships, service learning, volunteer programs, and community-based research projects, with the overall goal of improving the quality of life for the community.

Orientation & Advising Begin the process as early as possible. SAI stresses the importance of meeting with your academic advisor to discuss how to “save or bank” courses to take while abroad. Get to know your academic advisor and the advisors in the study abroad office so when questions arise, you know where to turn. From the moment that you express interest in SAI programs, there is someone who is there to help you. SAI admissions counselors are knowledgeable about the programs, courses, cities and countries where the schools are located, and have extensive experience in helping students transition from their colleges and universities in their home countries to the SAI schools in Italy and London. It is important to continue communication with your academic advisor on campus to help you in selecting the courses that will fulfill your degree requirements and may help you in your future career and graduate school paths. Study abroad is considered to be a life-changing experience. Both the SAI admissions counselors and the SAI staff in Italy and London can help to enhance this defining moment in your life. No question is ever unimportant at SAI. You can email, phone, or establish communication through Facebook, Twitter or SAI’s live chat feature. The answer to your question is never out of reach. Upon arrival you will participate in an orientation program. Orientation is intended to familiarize you with the local environment. You will learn some of the local customs to help make your stay in your new city successful. School and SAI program policies are thoroughly reviewed during orientation.

Students will explore their own cultural identity with respect to the local culture while giving back to their host communities. Not only do these programs and projects have advantages for the communities, but experts agree that these types of activities add an extra dimension to living and learning abroad, help to develop knowledge and skills for the global marketplace, and from a practical perspective, serve as boosters to resumes and graduate school applications. For many, being a volunteer abroad represents an opportunity they simply haven’t had time to realize back home, where they juggle work, school, and busy lives. As a volunteer, students have the opportunity to explore their own culture, ideas and expectations with respect to the local realities they will encounter, while at the same time giving back to their host community. The relationships made as a result of these experiences can be life long and life changing for both students and locals alike. Most SAI programs offer volunteer opportunities and your SAI Advisor will guide you through the process of choosing a position that suits you. In addition, many SAI sites offer a variety of internships. You can find information on both volunteer and internship opportunities in more detail at the SAI website.

SAI internships are an excellent way to extend learning beyond the classroom and explore career possibilities. SAI schools offer unmatched opportunities for students to gain professional experience in a variety of areas including: international relations, media, visual communication, education, hospitality management, government service, sports management, fashion design, marketing, industrial and interior design, culinary and wine industries, and arts administration. Students will work in tandem with professionals in these fields and will gain a perspective on the global workplace. Typically, internships require a minimum of 120 hours during the term abroad.

Service Learning SAI schools offer innovative courses and programs that integrate language, culture and service learning. Students often engage in problem-solving and team building activities that promote a deeper meaning to their roles as community leaders and responsible citizens. Students may link their experiences outside of the classroom with courses they are taking while abroad or courses they plan to take when returning to their home campuses. Typically, service learning extends for the duration of the term abroad.

Volunteer Abroad Volunteering provides the most flexible option for community service while studying abroad. Students may work on a specific project or may participate in community, cultural or government related programs for a designated time. Examples include working with local immigration officials, teaching English and computer skills, serving in soup kitchens, participating with local medical emergency teams, and interacting with youth. Students increase their knowledge of the local culture and gain insight into local problems and ways in which they contribute to the solutions. The requirements vary depending on activity.

Master’s Programs SAI is pleased to offer 12 month Master’s Programs at Domus Academy (DA) and Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti (NABA), in Milan and also a Master’s Program at Apicius International School of Hospitality (AISH) in Florence.

SAI offers shared student apartments located throughout each city. Every apartment is unique in size, age, floor plan, and number of bedrooms. Since these are residences (not dorms) students are exposed to everyday life abroad; shopping at local markets, enjoying a morning espresso at the neighborhood bar, and building relationships with other locals in the building. All students live with other SAI students. A typical apartment will house 3-8 students, and will contain a combination of single (1 student per room) and double bedrooms (2 students per room). Students share the kitchen, sitting area, and washing machine. Home stays are available in Florence, Rome, Siena and Sicily. SAI is happy to accommodate roommate requests.

The Health, Wellness & Sustainable Living Community is an intentional living and learning environment for SAI students. SAI recognizes the importance of environmental sensitivity and sustainability in our world today. The living community fosters health and wellness for students who seek substance-free living with opportunities to enhance global leadership and communication skills. Living in the selected apartments as a comprehensive living community enhances students’ abilities to reflect on their global experiences and develop ways to articulate their experiences to others, including future employers and graduate school admission officers. The Health, Wellness & Sustainable Living Community is designed for like-minded students to live and learn together. Students who choose this housing option will share a commitment to personal and community health and sustainability; and will work together to create and maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle as it applies to their academic and personal experiences while abroad. Students participate in activities that focus on sustainability and the environment, such as learning about local energy conservation, water usage, and fuel efficiency.

Student Housing

Students may meet with local experts to discuss ways in which their communities are addressing environmental concerns. One intent of this living community is to develop low impact living habits, such as preparing meals with local foods, which reduces the environmental footprint. The living community is a way for students to establish meaningful connections both within the SAI program and in the greater community. These types of skills are invaluable in preparing for success in their personal and professional lives.

FLORENCE UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS The City

Student Life

The beauty and wealth of Florence has attracted every society, from Romans to our present world. Though Florence is an ancient city, the focal point today is the art and architecture, and the Renaissance that blossomed there from 1400 – 1600. No other place in Europe reflects the birth and development of modern society more than Florence, through its exquisite examples of art and architecture. The Renaissance or “rebirth”, the revolutionary time that followed the Dark Ages of Europe, changed the world forever by placing importance on the individual and on creativity.

SAI recognizes that a well-rounded study abroad experience includes learning opportunities both in and out of the classroom. By providing a strong Student Services program, our staff aims to support students in their personal growth through daily cultural interactions both in Florence and as they travel beyond.

FUA’s location in the historic center of Florence offers students the opportunity to live in the heart of the Renaissance while experiencing the modern, thriving city of today. The streets of Florence still ring with the vibrant culture that began over 600 years ago; the center has changed little, combining the elegance and quality of the Renaissance style with a stunning blend of modern design. It is an immensely fun city, filled with people from all parts of the world. The lush hills and mountains of Tuscany surround the city, offering themselves for exploration on afternoons or weekends. Though Florence has a rich history, today it is an important center for contemporary art, fashion design, graphics and business. We invite you to experience this contrast of past and present with other students from around the world that come to study in Florence.

www.saiprograms.com

At the beginning of each term, students participate in an orientation during which they are given general information, school policies, a profile of Italian culture, a guided walking tour of the city and school premises, an Italian language placement test and a final course registration. You will meet your advisors at orientation, and they will be available to assist you with any academic or personal issues that may arise throughout the term. Advisors also plan frequent social events for students, ranging from restaurant dinners of regional cuisine to the wildly popular local soccer matches.

Fall • The Tuscan coast and its medieval villages – 3 days • Florence walking tour – half day • Barberino outlet & aperitivo on the Bilancino Lake - 1 day • Mini cruise on the Tuscan Archipelago – 1 day • Siena: city tour and wine tasting – 1 day • Pisa & Lucca – 1 day

spring • Bressanone & South Tyrol Castles – 3 days • Florence walking tour – half day • Chianti Tour: wine cellars exploration and wine tasting – 1 day • Bologna: typical food tasting & shopping at open markets – 1 day • Carrara marble caves and Lucca city tour – 1 day • Cinque Terre tour – 1 day

Optional Events • Outdoor market tour • Bargello Museum • Palazzo Vecchio tour • La Specola • Stibbert Museum • Pitti Palace • Medici Palace Riccardi • Medici Chapel

Volunteering The Student Services department at FUA also offers students the opportunity to join the community of Florence through a socially relevant experience of volunteering. Students have the opportunity to volunteer in a variety of Florentine associations that work in the social or cultural field such as museums, canteens, churches, the British Institute Library, Florence International Theatre Company (FITC), St. James Church etc. Volunteering in Florence is a wonderful option for all those students who want to be actively involved in the everyday life of the city. It is also a very enriching and rewarding experience. Please see our Florence website for details on volunteer opportunities through SAI.

The School As an urban institute, Florence University of the Arts (FUA) is comprised of several buildings, Palazzo Bombicci Guicciardini Strozzi, Palazzo Doni, Palazzo Ramirez de Montalvo and Villa Brilli Peri. The school’s main building, Palazzo Doni, is located steps away from the Santa Croce Church (Basilica di Santa Croce). This Renaissance building was once owned by the Doni family, patrons of Michelangelo. The classroom used as “Aula Michelangelo” was once the Doni family master bedroom, where Michelangelo’s commissioned work was displayed. Palazzo Bombicci Guicciardini Strozzi, located across the street from Palazzo Doni, hosts classrooms, as well as an advanced photography studio, including professional dark room. Palazzo Ramirez de Montalvo accommodates the Italian language and Italian literature departments of Florence University of the Arts. In addition, Palazzo Ramirez de Montalvo hosts regular events which include afternoon lectures and a film series as well as special evening events such as book launches, lectures, discussion groups and conferences. Villa Brilli Peri houses most of the food and wine studies. This palazzo hosts classes in the professional kitchens and Wine Appreciation teaching classroom. Villa Brilli Peri is also the location of the Palestra (the gym) that all FUA students are free to use. Although these buildings hold historical meaning in Florence, contemporary Italian interior design can be found within all of them. The City Nestled in the rolling hills of the heart of Tuscany, just 70 miles south of Florence, Siena was first settled during Etruscan times and then during the time of Emperor Augustus, a Roman town was founded on the site of Siena. As an important money-lending center, Siena prospered as a city-state and reached its height of importance following the victory against the Florentines at Montaperti in the fall of 1260. With its narrow winding roads and medieval architecture, Siena appears all but untouched by modern times. One can wander through tucked-away squares and tour museums and churches that are home to countless renowned works of Byzantine, Renaissance and High Renaissance art. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city is a major tourist attraction and is also a bustling university town. One of the oldest in Europe, the University of Siena was founded in 1240 and currently enrolls more than 20,000 students. The city offers exciting sporting and cultural events year round, including one of the top basketball teams in Europe, the AC Siena soccer team, many theatrical events and a series of concerts sponsored by the famous Chigiana Musical Academy and the Siena Jazz Summer Festival.

www.saiprograms.com

Siena is perhaps most famous for the heart stopping horse race, Il Palio. This spectacular event takes place twice a summer in the central square of the city and has roots that can be traced back centuries. The exhilarating bareback race pits each of the city’s 17 neighborhoods, or contrade, against one another and is not to be missed – the victorious neighborhood celebrates for an entire year!

Hands On Lessons

Siena Italian Studies is a study abroad program based at the International Center for Intercultural Exchange in Siena, Italy. SIS’s programs are a ‘gentle full-immersion’ in Italian life for highly motivated beginners, intermediate and advanced Italian language students. SIS offers some of the most innovative programs in Italy that work to fully integrate the education of language, culture and service-learning, in and out of the classroom.

In many courses, learning is not limited to the classroom. Whenever possible, Siena Italian Studies integrates field excursions and visits to enhance comprehension and provide students with a multifaceted experience. For example, art history courses naturally include visits to museums, churches and sites of artistic relevance in Siena, Florence and other towns in the region so that students can see first-hand the masterpieces discussed in class. Cultural Anthropology students may attend traditional local festivals and visit museums dedicated to aspects of Tuscan folk culture; students studying Italian Costume will have the opportunity to visit museums dedicated to textiles, costumes and individual Italian designers in the Florence/Prato area, while students studying the History of Italian Cuisine might visit a local cheese making farm and attend a hands-on cooking lesson, and the list goes on. Group Excursions Each semester program includes a 4-day group excursion to a chosen location. This excursion follows the Intensive Italian Course and includes some relaxation time as well as visits to culturally significant sites. Students will also attend several half-day and fullday excursions that are designed to give students a wide-ranging and meaningful experience of Tuscany (and other regions of Italy) of the sort tourists rarely have. We walk through the Tuscan countryside from one unspoiled small town to the next, passing along ancient Roman byways and through woods where locals hunt for mushrooms and gather herbs; visit farms that produce wine, olive oil and pecorino cheese; relax in one of the region’s many natural hot springs; experience traditional Tuscan festivals such as Carnevale in Foiano della Chiana. Each term also includes a visit to Florence and the Uffizi Gallery, as well as an Italian Opera in Florence or Rome and a day trip hiking along the Tuscan coast to an unspoiled beach in the Maremma Region of Tuscany.

Housing All participants are accommodated with local host families. This home stay is an integral and indispensable part of all SIS programs, offering students the opportunity to make life-long friends, reinforce the language skills acquired during daily lessons and to experience modern Italian culture from “the inside.” SIS’s carefully selected families, whether a single mother, a young married couple with children or an elderly widow, are all experienced in hosting American students. The host families view this experience as a form of cultural exchange and are eager to share their version of Italian culture with program participants. Home stays include three meals a day, seven days a week.

Classes are taught using an instructional approach developed over the years, known as FICCS (Full-Immersion: Culture, Content, & Service). Using this approach, which combines guided and spontaneous learning acquisition, students are asked to employ new language skills both in the classroom and in service situations giving them a learning experience like no other. SIS programs are intended for students with a wide range of motivations for studying abroad. From acquiring a mastery of the Italian language, to using a local Renaissance chapel as your art history classroom, to working alongside the city’s volunteer medical assistance team, Siena Italian Studies provides you with the means to create an unforgettable experience abroad. All students are housed in family board accommodations, encouraging use of your new language skills and deepening your interaction with Italian families and culture.

Volunteer program Participants in all SIS programs are encouraged to perform service in the community through the IC partner Ulisse Cultural Association. This service can range from 1-5 hours a week and opportunities are in a variety of different service sites. Students might set tables at the city soup kitchen, visit with the elderly at a nursing home, teach English to local elementary school children or volunteer on the city ambulance. Volunteering in the community is an unparalleled way to improve language skills, get involved in the local social fabric and make a genuine contribution to the host community.

Internships There are several internship placements available for interested students. These unpaid internships allow students to observe and participate in the day-to-day activities of several local businesses, organizations and structures. Internship students will participate in weekly on-site activities, as well as complete related coursework during the semester and a final reflective paper about a relevant aspect of the internship experience. Internships can be taken for or without academic credit. Some internship placements require students to take ‘Business and Legislative Italian’ course, in order to receive internship credit (3 credits per term/internship).

Academic Programs SAI students attending the program at SIS receive U.S. transferable credits from Portland State University. SIS offers semester, year and summer programs. All semester students will enroll in a threeweek Intensive Italian Language course (3 credits) during the first month of the program. Following the Intensive Italian Language Course, the group takes a break with a 4-day excursion to a selected destination. Following the group excursion, the standard semester begins. During the semester students take one Italian Language course (6 credits) along with 2-3 electives from the course offerings for a total of 15-18 credits. Year long students will complete 30-36 US credits. Please note: Final course selections will be made following the course introduction sessions given at the start of the term. Summer students take a combination of Italian Language and elective courses. Programs range from four to eight weeks for a total of 6 to 12 U.S. credits. Language and culture make up an inseparable binomial; who can really say whether it’s culture that generates language, or language that generates culture? This is the basis of Siena Italian Studies’ version of Full-Immersion: Culture, Content and Service (FICCS). For SIS, full-immersion is not a form of ‘torture’ or trial-by-fire in which only those who can quickly overcome language barriers survive; on the contrary, it’s a gradual and unforced process of discovering a new culture through continuous and constant exchanges with locals, a coming to awareness of the multiple linguistic and cultural capacities around us and within us. The overall objective of full-immersion at SIS is for each student to begin to recognize and activate these capacities, and to develop a reflective intercultural competence, which will allow him or her to function as a global citizen capable of facing and interacting with different cultures throughout the course of his/ her lifetime with awareness and sensitivity.

The City

Student Life

It has been said that more than a lifetime is needed to experience all that the city of Rome has to offer. It is a city layered with art and antiquities encompassing 2,500 years of history — from the Coliseum, the Imperial Forum, and the Roman Pantheon, to Vatican City, with the Sistine Chapel and Vatican museum. The city of Rome is home to over five million people and is a global center of business, diplomacy, religion, film, art, and fashion.

SAI students participate in an orientation program, which provides information on the school and its policies, the city of Rome, and what to expect while living abroad. By the end of orientation, students will have a good understanding of how to find their classes, buy supplies and groceries, and move about independently in the city. Students have many opportunities to adventure beyond the city of Rome. You may join the regular excursions organized by SAI, or you may choose to travel on your own. An efficient rail system allows easy access to places of interest and many low cost airlines offer convenient travel to other European cities. JCU students are offered a variety of co-curricular activities both on and off campus. Students may become active Student Council members, or participate on the debate team. Intramural soccer, basketball and volleyball are available, as well as swimming at a nearby pool. Several gyms are available in Trastevere, within easy walking distance of the campus. Films are shown at the school every week through the cinema club, and the university’s theater group stages a major dramatic or musical production twice a year.

The following is a list of student clubs currently available to all students and JCU encourages the participation of visiting study abroad students in the clubs. Even if you do not join a club, you are welcome to participate in club events.

JCU’s Tiber Campus, located on the banks of Rome’s famous Tiber river and a five-minute walk from Guarini, is a spacious, state-ofthe-art large building with smart classrooms, a student lounge and JCU offices such as Student Services and Counseling. Designed by the Italian modernist architect Angelo di Castro in 1958, it was completely renovated to accommodate 21st-century learning styles and technologies, while maintaining the architectural integrity of this former elementary school. Both John Cabot University campuses are wireless and set up to encourage dialogue and collaboration among our international student population.

• Multicultural Club: This club celebrates the diversity of all students at JCU and organizes cultural events based on various ethnicities and cultures. • Student Government – at least one visiting student is required to be part of the voting body giving visiting students a voice at JCU • The Matthew (The JCU student newspaper): The mission of this club is to provide news about the university and the city of Rome, to inspire students to explore their surroundings and to encourage the achievement of excellence. There are currently 25 student writers and participants, including visiting students. The Matthew is available in hard copy as well as on-line. Check out their website: http://jcumatthew.weebly.com/staff.html • The Environmental Club • S.T.A.N.D. (Students Taking Action in Darfur) • Model United Nations • Italian Cultural Club

Walk through the Porta Settimiana (built in the third century) and you will find JCU’s Frank J. Guarini Campus. Located on the grounds of the Accademia dei Lincei, the National Science Academy, where Galileo was a member, this historic building takes full advantage of Rome’s mild climate, opening onto patios, terraces and a spacious “Lemon Tree” courtyard surrounded by bougainvillea. Students regularly congregate in these open spaces and terraces to study and socialize. In addition to classrooms, the Guarini Campus houses the Aula Magna Regina auditorium, which hosts lectures, concerts, plays and films; the Frohring Library, with its study rooms, multimedia lab and media room; as well as JCU administrative offices.

The academic year is divided into two semesters of fifteen weeks each, beginning in September and January. In one semester, a student may enroll in four or five courses, earning 12 or 17 credits. Two summer sessions of six weeks each allow students to take one or two courses each session.

Since 1972, John Cabot University (JCU) has provided an exceptional academic and cultural opportunity for students - the chance to obtain an American university education in the heart of the international city of Rome. ALL classes at John Cabot are taught in English and there is NO Italian language requirement. John Cabot University understands that in an increasingly complex and inter-related world, an education with a global perspective is essential. JCU students encounter a rigorous liberal arts curriculum amidst centuries of art and architecture, in the center of one of the world’s great modern cities. John Cabot University maintains two campuses in Rome, each with its own personality.

ITALIAIDEA INSTITUTE

Italian Immersion in the “Eternal City” Since 1984 Italiaidea, authorized by the Italian Ministry of Education, has offered outstanding courses in Italian language and culture, becoming the foremost language institute in Rome. Today Italiaidea teaches around 1,500 students every year. Located in the heart of ancient Rome near the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain, the school draws students from around the world, creating an international environment while focusing on Italian language and culture. At Italiaidea, SAI offers an immersion program that includes the choice of home-stay housing, an excellent way to encourage your studies in Italian language. Students may also choose to be housed in SAI shared student apartments, in the center of Rome. Italiaidea uses an interactive communicative approach, with “authentic” materials. This means lessons are focused on Italian daily life, (newspapers, music, advertising, current events), continuing to update materials to make the program relevant and contemporary. Italiaidea offers eight levels of Italian Language study; two elementary levels, two intermediate levels, two advanced levels and two perfection levels. Upon arrival each student is tested to establish his/her language level and is precisely placed to reflect his/her current skills. Each class has a maximum of ten students.

www.saiprograms.com

Throughout its history Italiaidea has constantly worked to ensure the highest quality of service. In 1985 the school began to teach courses of Italian study for the Rhode Island School of Design (R.I.S.D.). In 1986 Italiaidea was asked to begin work with Cornell University; and in 1995 British Airways began sending its staff for language training. Since then Italiaidea’s list of clients has grown to include institutions such as Dartmouth College, the Embassies of the United States, France, Spain, Germany and Israel, and religious institutions such as North American College.

SAI

Everything’s just a stone’s throw away from Italiaidea: Piazza Venezia and the Capitoline, the Parliament and the Governmental Palace, Piazza del Popolo and Via del Corso. You will encounter a richness of sites, making it difficult to choose how to spend your free time. You will discover that Rome is an open-air theater which never ceases to amaze. It is an incredible city which enchants all with its great panoramas, piazzas, buildings, churches, ruins and museums; a great world capital which continues to maintain an authentic and traditional atmosphere in the peace of its small streets and its splendid piazzas bursting with people and life. “Rome is the great mother”, Fellini said, “who accepts all and where all find what they are looking for: art, cuisine, religion, cinema, nightlife or the peace of a boat-trip on the river, the boutiques of the major Italian designers or the small artisan workshops”.

Volunteering SAI offers students the opportunity to join the local Roman community through a socially relevant volunteer experience. Opportunities include Caritas Soup Kitchen, and Caritas Hostel for homeless men. Please see our website for details on volunteer opportunities through SAI.

SICILY

The City Sicily is rich in history, amazing architectural diversity, and natural wonders. From the breathtaking coastline, remote islands, jagged cliffs, white sand beaches, and crystal clear seas to spectacular Mount Etna, the snow covered volcano that dominates the eastern landscape, Sicily offers something for everyone. Students studying in Sicily enjoy the most daylight hours and the warmest average temperatures in all of Europe. As the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily’s strategic location has set the stage for a colorful and conflicted past. Inhabited since prehistoric times, Sicily has been shaped, culturally and physically, by each of its rulers. Sicily’s brilliant mixture of architecture and tradition represents the totality of Western civilization’s history and culture. Students in Sicily will discover Greek temples and amphitheaters overlain with Roman architectural impositions, stern Byzantine cathedrals, unique Norman-Arab works, Gothic churches, Catalan palaces, and the imposing façades of the Baroque era.

www.saiprograms.com

Student Life Syracuse is divided into two parts: the modern bustling section, and the more intimate, historical island center of Ortigia – the location of the Mediterranean Center’s Palazzo Ardizzone. Ortigia is best imagined as a marvelous labyrinth of intricately paved, pedestrian friendly streets which open up into expansive, well-lit squares, or piazzas. Many streets end at the sea wall, which is lined with palm tree shaded walks, vibrant open markets, and restaurants. The city of Syracuse is host to an enormously rich program of shows, exhibitions, and cultural events, including the internationally regarded Greek Theater Summer Season and the Ortigia Contemporary Arts Festival. The intimate setting of Ortigia naturally breaks down barriers between students and residents and MCAS regularly organizes social, cultural, and sporting events with students of local universities. These activities provide an opportunity for MCAS students to meet Italian and European students living and studying in the center of town.

Housing Students choosing SAI housing will live within easy walking distance of both MCAS and each other. Housing is offered in comfortable, shared apartments and students can choose a single or double occupancy room. All apartments are furnished and include a living room, a kitchen with basic supplies, bed linens, and a washing machine. Students will automatically receive a cell phone upon arrival. Cell phones allow students to be reachable at all times and to make and receive calls internationally. The food in Sicily is known among Italians as being the finest in Italy. MCAS students receive meal discounts at several nearby restaurants, although many choose to cook for themselves. With the daily open-air market’s endless stalls of Mediterranean fish, fruits, and vegetables, students can fill their fridges for a very low cost.

Within Ortigia, the historic island center of Syracuse, one can find the magnificent ruins of the Temple of Apollo, circa 600 BCE; the ruined works of the Greek mathematician Archimedes; Romanesque churches; Baroque palaces; and countless chapels constructed throughout the ages.

Founded as a Greek seaport in 733 BCE, Syracuse gradually surpassed Athens as a cosmopolitan center, drawing the likes of the great philosopher Plato. It was during Greek rule that what is now the Archaeological Park of Syracuse took shape. The park holds the largest altar in the Greek world; a theater that presented the first production of Aeschylus’ The Persians; and a stone quarry, once used as a cavernous prison and named the Ear of Dionysus by Caravaggio. Syracuse is also home to the Paolo Orsi Museum, which houses one of the finest collections of Greek artifacts in the world. Further inland is the valley of the Greek Temples at Agrigento, a worldclass archaeological site and home to the Greek philosopher Empedocles.

Program Inclusive Excursions* (Semester/Quarter) • Welcome dinner • Meal in Farmhouse on Sea – NOTO • Two night trip to the Aeolian Islands (fall) • Two night trip to Malta (spring) • Palermo • Coffee Talk Meetings • Ortigia Food Market Tour and Tasting • Sicilian Culinary Basics • Soccer night • Halloween event at MCAS (fall) • Thanksgiving event at MCAS (fall) • Carnevale/Mardi Gras in Sicilian town Palazzolo (spring) • Arabic night • Dancing night • Lectures & film nights at MCAS • Farewell dinner

INCLUSIVE ACADEMIC EXCURSIONS In addition to the many swimming spots in town, there are several great beaches, just outside the city, which are easily accessible by bus. Twenty minutes from Syracuse is the state park, Cava Grande, where nature lovers can hike, camp, and swim in sparkling clear spring waters deep within the canyon Inca.

• Agrigento • Mt. Etna • Noto & Vendicari • Pantalica, Anapo Valley & foothills of Monti Iblei • Piazza Armerina & Morgantina • Plemmerino Coastal Reserve

The School The Mediterranean Center for Arts and Sciences (MCAS) offers a range of core undergraduate courses for study abroad students. ALL courses are taught in English and there is no Italian language requirement. MCAS is located on the island of Ortigia, the historical center of the ancient city of Syracuse, in a completely restored 17th century Baroque palazzo, or palace. This historic building has three floors that look down upon a traditional central courtyard; an ideal gathering place. The school’s facilities include large classrooms, a library, a photography lab, an art studio, and a student lounge, as well as a computer lab and a multimedia room with audio and video facilities. Located just steps away from the water, Palazzo Ardizzone commands superb views of both the Mediterranean Sea and the intricate streets of Ortigia.

terranean world, Contemporary Sicily: Mafia & Anti-Mafia, State & Society, Mediterranean Landscapes. Summer students will enroll in one to two courses per session for a total of 6/7 credits. All courses are taught in English and there is NO language requirement, however semester students are required to enroll in Italian Language as part of their program. U.S. academic credit courses are generally within five discipline areas: Classical Studies, Studio & Fine Arts, History & Political Science, Environmental Studies, Italian Studies and Mediterranean Studies. The school’s surroundings are themselves a valuable resource and a number of courses include strong fieldwork components held at various sites in and around the city. Instructors understand the value of an interactive learning environment and small class size ensures that professors provide individual attention as needed.

Volunteer Opportunities An important component of the SAI Program in Syracuse involves integrating students into the local culture and community. Our Service Learning Program represents an opportunity for students to contrast their own culture, ideas and expectations with the local society as they contribute to their host community. SAI’s Service Learning Program, with its local partner organization for this initiative, Vita e Cultura, Amici di Max, aims to offer assistance to the local community by placing volunteers in important local projects that range from arts education and language initiatives in local schools, to working with immigrants, the elderly, and the disabled. Projects vary from term to term based on the needs of the community and the host organizations.

Academic Programs MCAS classes focus on the unique central Mediterranean location, specializing in Sicilian culture and identity through the ages, along with some of the Arabic influences. MCAS offers semester, quarter and summer programs. Semester students may enroll in 12-17 credits each term choosing from the selection of elective courses offered plus one Italian Language course. MCAS’s Spring Quarter program focuses on Sicilian & Mediterranean Studies and is made up of five subject specific courses for a total of 16 credits: Italian Language & Culture Today, Ancient Sicily: History & Art of the Ancient Mediterranean World, Modern Sicily: History & Art of the Medieval & Modern Medi-

Milan (Milano in Italian), the “second city of Italy,” located on the plains of the northern province of Lombardy surrounded by an arc of mountains and lakes, is a worldrenowned, international center for fashion, design, finance, industry, and calcio (soccer, as we Americans call it). It has great museums, a huge castle, one of the largest Gothic cathedrals on earth, and one of the world’s most famous paintings (Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper). The circuit of annual fashion shows, design fairs and exhibitions in the city attracts many international visitors and celebrities. Despite its work-orientated persona as Italy’s economic powerhouse, Milan has many hidden gems: apart from the discount designer outlet stores, you’ll have time to discover the Italian dolce vita (sweet life) in the many outdoor cafés around the city.

The majority of students who study abroad say that one of the most valuable aspects of living in a European city is the opportunity to travel to other European cities. Milan’s geographical location allows easy access not only to all major Italian cities, but also to major European centers; the Swiss border is less than an hour away. Students can ski in the Alps in the winter months and enjoy Garda, Como, and other famously beautiful Italian lakes in warmer times.

In this Master’s program, held in English, students consider all the ways in which homes and interior design will reflect the transformations taking place in our cities. They examine the domestic environment in all its roles: as shelter, as workplace, as borderland between public and private space, as both a meeting place and a place of refuge and solitude.

NABA SUMMER 2012 PROGRAMS: TBA

Traditional classroom study will be combined with experimental workshops devoted to new design themes, materials research, and the application of new solutions and technologies to realworld challenges. Digital Exhibit and Set Design Digital information has become a fundamental commodity of our time. Modern society is increasingly dependent upon multimedia digital technologies. They are becoming ubiquitous in nearly all areas of human life and are radically changing the processes of communication, objects and ideas production, and the culture itself. The aim of this program is to help students develop the technical and critical skills necessary to become new professionals who are able to create a wide variety of dynamic, interactive digital environments: exhibition spaces, digital theatre design, virtual museums, interactive performance spaces, and communication architectures. The interdisciplinary program integrates theoretical and critical study with project research and experimentation. Students explore representation models of digital environments to study one of the most significant aesthetic dimensions of recent years: interaction. The creative process is focused on using digital techniques such as 3D modelling and animation, interface design, and database management to support the design of complex digital environments. Domus is an excellent, very famous school among the design community. My overall experience was life changing; I have fantastic confidence in all that I do. Thank you SAI! Domus Academy: DA Founded in 1982, Domus Academy (DA) is considered one of Europe’s top design schools, offering 11 Masters level programs during the academic year, along with undergraduate summer programs. Recent industry publications proclaim DA as one of the worlds top three design schools. DA is a member of CUMULUS, an association of European design schools. Winner of the Compasso d’Oro, Italy’s most sought after design award, with a distinguished list of past lecturers such as Ettore Sottsass, Philippe Starck, Gianfranco Ferré, Neil Barrett, and Ron Arad, DA has always been a true pioneer of “Made in Italy,” not simply teaching how to design products, but considering design as a complex, challenging activity which contributes to direct the form and meaning of industrial production and culturally outlines different aesthetic and social visions. Furthermore, DA gives its students the opportunity to meet and work with a wide network of design and fashion companies. For SAI undergraduate English-speaking students, DA has also created summer programs taught in English. The main objective of all programs and courses is to promote collaboration—or “contamination” as DA puts it—among the various design sectors. Students are encouraged to perform in-depth analyses of design culture and to always keep in mind the past, present, and future of fashion, art, and design. Students begin with a theoretical base that includes an introduction to the instruments of their field of study that they then use in projects carried out with the aid of renowned professional designers. They are also taught to pay careful attention to marketing and communication techniques. DA students thus learn all essential aspects of design, from the initial abstract concepts to the successful presentation of the final product.

Domus is different because it simulates a professional working environment. The students become the creative, marketing or management team; trying to figure out solutions for real-world problems, and obtaining skills they can apply in the working world at the same time. Because of their hands-on approach to learning, I was able to collaborate with significant companies and individuals that I never would have had the chance to interact with otherwise. ~ Student, DA Business Design Graduate

However it is not only formal cultural institutions that are important to UAL students. Just as vital is the informal street life and the network of events, clubs and galleries that students contribute to, develop and organize themselves. By creating art, design and performances, and presenting these to the general public, UAL students learn by doing and enrich London in the process.

Student Life During the first three days after arrival, the SAI Program Coordinator organizes a series of meetings and events designed to provide students with a thorough orientation of the city and surrounding area, along with a full explanation of the academic program and program policies. SAI PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS

Participating Universities & Colleges SAI accepts students from ALL schools, including those not directly affiliated with SAI. An affiliation with your school is not required. SAI has formal Affiliation Agreements with many universities and colleges in the U.S. and other countries. Students enrolling from one of our affiliated schools receive a variety of benefits, from fee reductions to special scholarship offers. Affiliated students should discuss their plans to attend an SAI program with the study abroad office at their home school. Affiliated schools guarantee their students will receive credit for courses from their home institution and will also assist in the procedure to use financial aid to study abroad. It is important that you meet with your study abroad advisor to determine how program fees are paid. Some schools require students to pay all fees directly to SAI; others require students to pay their home institution fees and the school will cover the cost of the study abroad program; still others will require students to pay certain fees and their home institution will pay others. Be sure to discuss this with your study abroad advisor in order to be clear about the procedure your college or university follows in its affiliation with SAI.

www.saiprograms.com

Students are responsible for verifying transfer credit before beginning their program. While affiliated schools guarantee credit, this does not guarantee every course will transfer, or that it will transfer to your major area of study. You will want to meet with your advisor for a final determination. Students from affiliated universities and colleges must enroll through their study abroad office in order to be certain they will benefit from the affiliation in place. If you are uncertain about your college or university’s affiliation with SAI, drop by your school’s study abroad office and discuss it with an advisor or contact the SAI office directly.
